Hey everyone just saying a hello as I'm new to fish wrecked. I've lived in Perth all my life and love fishing but have never really fished Perth. I do like to get away for a few holidays a year to places like Kalbarri and Walpole but I'm looking to start fishing more locally and thought I'd start by joining up. Unfortunately I don't have a boat (yet...) but any fishing is good fishing.

Does anyone know of any shops or servos? We should get a list together for those desperate/unplanned fishing outings.

I'll start. Corner of Leach Hwy and Stock Road on the way to Freo, there is a 24 hour deli that sells bait and basic tackle.

well me and the fiancee have won a trip to broome cable beach resort 5 nights, going to take an early honeymoon getting married in november save some $$ we certainly didnt have. reason for the post is we are going to hire a 4wd looking for some suggestions and heads up on any good fishing and what to expect or target? any help would be greatly appreciated to plan this to be a killer week thanks.

took the old man out for a troll to rotto today.

the whole way from woodies to west end, the water was murky green, and struggled to get over 23'c, averaging no more than 23.5'c. a bit different to 2 weeks ago, where it was 26'c+, cobalt blue, and you could cleary see the bottom in 40m, let alone the free swimming dolphinfish we saw.

i was understanderbly sceptical of the conditions, but the targets were still around (as long as you are looking in the right places). the first was a double hook up, but after i get dad set up, mine had spat the hooks.

back home by 12.30.

hey guys. has anyone fished at/around honeymoon pool in collie before? im heading down with some freinds on the weekend and was thinkin of having a flick around. did a quick search about honeymoon pool on here, and with a few reports of trout/redfin its got me biting at the bit to have a crack. how much would a fishing licence at a post office cost also?

Memory-Map iPhone app was brought to my attention this morning.

Looks interesting, does a little bit more than the Navionics Marine Australia in that if you BUY their iPhone app, and the PC version, you can sync points between them.

I have discussed this very feature with Navionics and they say that one day, it will become available between their iPhone/Android app, and the Navionics PC app (v1.3, 25e), but then they said that pinch zoom will come out for Android and I haven't seen that either.

Time to look at something else for getting further out from here, I've got a 5.8 UB Southwind, 75hp on the back, all 99 year. Looking to swap for a new, or nearly new 8m Leisure Cat, twin motors, maybe 150hp each, all the go gear and trailerable. Clean swap and I'll take you out fishing when I get a chance to make up the difference if there's any.  Any takers????????? C'mon. Might have to talk the cook into buying one if I cant trade. I'll even throw in my Furumo Sounder and my GPS with Esperence to Darwin  C card

Its a real shame for exmouth holding the AIBT this year and the predicted billfish numbers being low in comparison to previous years due to the extreme rise in water temp and issues with clarity for this time of year.look forward to hearing some feedback from the first few days of the AIBT

P.S hopefully billfish numbers arent to low and all entrants still get into a few fish

The shores of Acapulco's beaches were this weekend teeming with masses of fish packed so tightly they looked like an oil slick from above.

Thousands of sardines, anchovies, striped bass and mackerel surged along the coast of the Mexican resort in an event believed to be linked to the devastating Japanese tsunami.

Delighted fishermen rushed out in wooden motor boats, abandoning their rods and nets and simply scooping the fish up with buckets.

'There were about 20 or 30 fishermen and there were people who came with their kids to take advantage of it,' Carlos Morales said.

The fishermen attributed the strange phenomenon to the unusual currents unleashed by tsunami that followed the earthquake in Japan.

'It would fall into that category where you would love to make the connection, but who knows?' said Rich Briggs, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

'Tsunamis can change local currents, but it's hard to make a firm connection.'

G'day guys

Just an update on the rivermouth, I mentioned earlier in the week that it was opened but that was only to commercial boats. The mouth is still closed to recreational boats and at this stage will be for at least another week. One of the channel markers from inside the mouth has been dragged out past Black Rock and there is a new break right in the middle of the channel. Dept of Trans is currently organising hydrographic surveys, etc to ensure safe passage of the rivermouth. So to those who are thinking of dragging your tub up this way it would be best to check with the dept before. Hope this helps

headed down to a local beach last night in search of sharks and rays . picked cuthbad up at 7.00 and headed down to the beach. we were a little nervouse as the previouse three sessions resulted in : 1st no fish snapped rod and 3rd snapped rod so as you can understand the odds felt like they were stacked against us. firts slides in the water and a good hit on cuthbads bait for no hook up DAMN! out went the second and band i was on backwards and forwards seemed like all night when it hit the beach ... a nice big smooth ray. after that we headed of as it was 1230.

Have been seaching for a boat and decided to get a 12ft or 14ft deep V tinny, but cant decide between the two, most of the time i will be operating inshore and up rivers but on a good day head out offshore and will only need to carry 2 or 3 people and some fishing gear

I am  looking for a surf rod that has a slender butt, is light, strong and is 12' or more.  Has to be a spin to use with a stella 8000.

A fellow in Bluewater showed me a Lox rod that seemed to fit the bill, although might be a little on the light uside action wise.  It was rated to a 100gm lure which pretty much leaves you a mulie and two ounces of sinker.

Has anyone used a Lox?

Is there anything better out there that might fit the bill?  would spend $450 if I had to.

Has anybody had a play on one of these? I'm keen to own one

does anyone know how the reef along ocean reef just outside the marina mouth fish for herring, tailor etc? Any help would be really appreciated!

i have been told that you can use regular pool salt and a sealable bucket, however i am unsure of the process and how long they will last once salted?

A little late in light of 15,000 fish and sealife found dead on our northern beaches last week due to warm water, however, better late...etc

Fisheries researchers will join forces with CSIRO scientists over the next three years, to closely examine climate change effects on Western Australia’s marine environment.

The $450,000 project, funded by the Australian Government’s Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC), the Department of Fisheries WA and CSIRO, will utilise oceanographic modelling and an understanding of environmental effects on fisheries using some case studies.

Supervising Scientist Dr Nick Caputi, who is the department’s principal investigator on the project, said this was one of a number of FRDC-funded projects across Australia on ‘Climate Change Adaption – Marine Biodiversity and Fisheries’.

“In WA this project will be used to assess the vulnerability to climate change of fish stocks; such as western rock lobster, blue swimmer crabs, tailor and dhufish,” Dr Caputi said.

“The study will enable us to more closely monitor for any changes, so improved fisheries management strategies can be identified.

“Historic trends in environmental conditions will be examined, in addition to using oceanographic modeling to forecast trends over the next 20 and 50 years.”

Dr Caputi said the new work continued the research already undertaken on climate change through Western Australian Marine Science Institution projects.

Some key environmental trends affecting WA include:

• the increasing frequency and magnitude of ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) events;
• increasing variability of the Leeuwin Current superimposed on its weakening trend;
• an increase in water temperature and salinity;
• change in the frequency of storms affecting the lower west coast; and
• a change in the frequency of cyclones affecting the north-west.

Im pretty bad at estimating the weight of fish and since most fish I catch are either bait or released this table comes in pretty handy

Just find the species, type in the length and it estimates the weight.

Thought it might be usefull for estimates with all the marlin being caught atm. 

In my opinion it generally over estimates the weight by a small percentage. Keep in mind this is a South African table so species names differ in some cases.

Check it out and let us know how accurate you think it is, maybe some confirmed comparisons would be usefull.

Hi guys,

 Was out diving last week and the water temps were ranging from 25.1 to 25.8 degrees out of Hillarys. I talked to a fisheries officier working out from the Abrolous Islands and he said the water temps were in the 28-29 degress and that it was bleaching the coral. I found this a bit concerning and wondering what the hell is going on in our waters;

1. Crays are usally walked back in 1st week of march - not here!

2. The water temps last year same time were 19-21 degrees!

3. Salmon run has not even started down south yet - reports that they will run in April

4. Reports of Marlin being caught of Perth and further south.

5. Mackeral caught of Woodmans point!

Any thoughts on this.....is this climate change or global warning. Whats next a iceberg of Albany!
