Towing

Hi I have a 4.88 M Quintrex runabout, at present I am towing it with a Ford Territory AWD, my wife wants us to downsize and buy a Nissan x-trail, with a 4 cylinder 2.2 petrol engine, anyone here tow a similar rig with an X-trail ? (it will be an 2017 model).

Just wondering.....Mal.

Dunsborough Flats

Hi all,

Heading down to Dunsborough this weekend and thinking of hitting the flats out front of town for YFW or flathead but given the mild weather, am I better focusing on other species?

Cheers

Distribution of Greyband Cods in WA?

Hi members,

I'm trying to gather some info on the distribution of Greyband/Eightbar Cod in WA

So far I have confirmed specimens (based on photo or a sample) from mid-Pilbara to Albany and from depths 105 to 470m

Does anyone have any records (preferably with an image) from outside this distribution or depth range in WA?  Happy to communicate by email or PM if you prefer.

Thanks in advance, Glenn

How to re rego a boat that’s been out of rego for unknown time

Just looking for some advice from someone in the know

looking at a boat that all looks sweet structurally but has been out of rego for an unknown time

If I were to buy the boat, how would I go about getting the thing re registered?

thanks

REGULATOR FIRST TRIP OUT

First days fishing on the new Regulator 28. Gentlemans hours start, bit of a shake-down for the 3 new owners (all fighting for the skipper chair all day ) and some fishing until mid arvo.

The machine.

Nice tuna, had a double hookup but dropped the second after a leader failed. She has "the noise"

Snapper on KG gear.

Cruise home at 39 knots.

Not too bad for the first day.

Boat simply awesome!

A sign of things to come?

Just a few thoughts on what I found today chasing up some info and stuff for the new tub I got after being boatless for 15 years.

First was some boating info and some freebie stickers that D.O.T marine give out.

Old news for some maybe but the Essex street D.O.T branch ( Freo)  has shut since march , wiping out a direct contact we had with marine specific

info and people whom had a clue , marine wise.

So rang DOT , and was told after 6 pre recorded pass ons , that any branch can help out with that marine gear. Fine I said , I will head to Willagee

branch were both my girls obtained there lic to bump , err drive.

Ok said the lady , but she said that branch is due to close soon too !

So off i go to willagee branch , got to counter , asked for marine phamplets and stickers to be given a blank look .

After 3 counter staff got involved I was finally sent to a spinner with some stuff on it , HURRRAH success.

Ok next to Fisheries in freo for there stuff,  fishing  guides , rulers etc .

Um we got some rulers mate , but we are no longer issuing phamplets . you just go on line to get them , cost cutting he said.

So with the cost of all DOT charges on the up and up by fair margins in the last few years , my question is , are we getting a fair shake or is

a sign of the times with the purse strings tightning?

P,s yes I have now dowloaded app for rules onto phone., just would have though some paper rules would have continued .

Verado oil change.

The easy and clean way to change the oil on a early model verado.  Mine has a horizontal sump plug, to drain all the oil that way is a VERY meat job. This oil extraction pump is slow but easy.  It's good for cars and transmission to.

Tracking for recreational vessels. (Opinions needed)

 Hi All,

Looking for opinions (that doesn't happen often!!)

We're developing a project that involves placing small gps devices on recreational vessels under 8 metres that will have a range of approx 20km from established base stations.

Easy set up, solar powered and doesn't need to be hardwired in.

There are a multitude of applicatons we're targeting but primarily;

1) Safety at sea, giving VMR and Water Police access to vessel location under secure format. Last known location and for those of us that (occasionally) forget to Log Off and hopefully enabling emrgency services to locate vessels when epirbs may not have been activated.

2) Anti theft, owners can be alerted to unauthorised vessel movement.

Pay as you use Insurance an option here as well.

2) Possible Boat ramp pay as you use system so you don't need to mess around with multitude of ticket options and local shires can direct funds raised into facilities.

3) Marina Management (Marinas only have access to members who authorise)

4) Fisheries research and

5) Environmental control.

I'd love to know the opinions on the pros and cons from the perspective of WA boat owners and fishers and also if people would be willing to trial the units when available.

Personally I've developed a system that can work up and down our coastline and obviously I see a need but that doesn't mean everyone else does.

The device itself isn't meant to replace epirbs and I guess is an alternative to "B" Class AIS.

So the questions.

Would you be supportive of such a system if it supported SAR capabilities and possibly reduced Insurance Premiums?

Would you be overly concerned about visibility to VMR, Water Police, Fisheries and Environmental control groups?

What price would you be willing to pay, $100-$400?

Would you want your NOK or family members to have access to location services?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Spinning Reel Recommendation - 2500/3000

Think the thread title says it all guys, looking for a recommendation. I'm replacing a Team Daiwa Advantage 3000 that has served me really well for chasing mostly little stuff. Daiwa no longer stock some of the parts, so time to replace.

Happy to look at anything up to a few hundred bucks or so. Mostly used for casting small baits into light surf, flicking around off rocks and jetties, chasing bream in the rivers or throwing out small lures. Quality is important to me. :)

Cheers

Selecting braid. Diameter (PE) vs Breaking Strain

I went to purchase some nice braid for the old man to respool his old skool stradic 4000. I went in thinking I would get the 20lb PE 1.2 Sunline Siglon PEx8. The gent at the shop (site sponsor) was helpful and suggested I get the PE 1.7 and gave a few good reasons for doing so. The 1.7 has a 30lb breaking strain which I feel may be to high for the rod and reel the old boy will be using it on.

So my question is, when selecting some of the newer thin but strrong braid would you purchase based on breaking strain or the width of the line?
