Deep shit in Dongara

 G'day guys,

me and afew mates have decided to pretty much wing it and tow the boat to dongara. Got here around 2 thsarvo and shot out about 3nm, about 15 mtrs of water pretty much where the dirty water goes clear. The whole coastline is filthy presumably from the swell. We had just one really good lost hookup in under 2hrs  today and struggled to find much ground at all. With 3 odd days to go here we are in a bit of strive and desperate need of some info haha. Don't want co- ords just a rough idea of how far out we should try, heard the 50mtr mark was good but honestly we don't ask for a whole lot fish wise. Afew keepers and we will be stoked.

Cheers lads!

Daiwa J braid

Anyone used daiwa J braid yet?

More Water Supply Dams opened up for Fishing

http://www.cairnspost.com.au/news/cairns/council-eyes-recreational-uses-for-copperlode-dam-in-cairns/story-fnjpusyw-1227453098501?sv=c3c4fac143abea01f01e5c793e7d26a1

Makes one wonder why its safe for Queenslanders to fish in their drinking water supply dams yet in WA their strictly NO GO zones. When is WA going to catch up to the rest of the country??

Quindalup Fishing

Hey guys, heading down to Quindalup in a couple of weeks with the family and staying right on the beach

should be a good opportunity to chase some whiting etc from the beach out front for a bit of fun, but does anyone know any spots along there to chase anything a bit bigger?
What are my chances of a couple of stray salmon or tailor out there?

Thinking I might have to head up to Eagle bay or out towards the rocks to see what I can find while I'm there, but if anyone could point me in the right direction I'd be stoked haha

cheers

Edit - Forgot to mention, will all be landbased too

Pot Pullers get $5k fines each!

 Serves them farkin right

This from the Dept Fisheries website:

Pulling others' lobster pots hauls in big fines

Unlawful interference with rock lobster pots led to an expensive day in court for three offenders this week.

A Mandurah Court magistrate issued a man and a woman with fines and costs of $5,150.80 each, for joint offences. Another man was ordered to pay $4650.80 for offences he was found guilty of.

Raymond John SERGI (56) and Ruth Leanne CAWLEY (47) from Wannanup came to the attention of Fisheries and Marine Officers (FMOs), after numerous complaints from the public.

Mandurah Court heard there was targeted surveillance of the pair on Wednesday 22 October last year (2014), as they pulled rock lobster pots offshore from the Dawesville Cut and that there was further surveillance between late October and early December.

On 9 December, Sergi and Cawley were observed pulling a total of six lobster pots including three that did not belong to either of them. It is an offence to pull a rock lobster pot unless you are the gear identification holder of that pot. It is also an offence to interfere with any fishing gear.

In a separate case before the Mandurah Court on Wednesday (24 June 2015), 32 year old Matthew Phillip PATTERSON from Halls Head was apprehended at the Dawesville Boat Ramp on 28 November last year (2014).

The court heard that, in a later record of interview, Patterson admitted to pulling six pots including two that were owned by a person or persons unknown to him.

Southern Metropolitan Region Compliance Manager Ryan Parker said the size of the fines against Sergi, Cawley and Patterson showed the seriousness with which interfering with fishing gear offences were considered.

“FMOs in Mandurah consider this to be an extremely serious offence, which impacts heavily on the fishers who are targeted by offenders. If we have the evidence we summons all offenders to a date with a magistrate, at Court,” Mr Parker said.

“We appreciate the help that members of the public provide to help us track down offenders and anyone with information is asked to call the FISHWATCH on 1800 815 507.”

Recreational fishers should be aware that the 2014/15 rock lobster fishing season concludes next Tuesday 30 June 2015, the 2015/16 season will open on 15 October. Information and rules are outlined in the Recreational fishing for rock lobster guide, online at www.fish.wa.gov.au, or available from departmental offices, or Information Outlets.

Big Red and Wahoo

13.5kg red and a couple wahoo from the last trip. We ended up with 4 Wahoo, 51 Spaniards and heaps of bottom fish, mainly snapper. Other guy with the Wahoo is the skipper.

Travelling lure

Where Is the travelling lure now?

Was wondering if i could take it to coral bay or if we should start another lure ?

Saturdays Catch

Went out of Mindarie on Saturday I have not ventured out there before.
Headed out about 20km came across some pots and fished around them.
Ended up with 1 x Dhuie, 1 x KG, 1 x Flounder and 1 x Harlequin.
The flounder was a ripper measured 43cm and was quite tasty.
Took one of my mates who only got his fishing license the night before and he ended up catching nearly all the fish I think he is hooked now.
Also got a few undersize.
Not as great as some of the write ups from the weekend but thought I would add something.
Hope you all had a good weekend.

Steep Point - boat based 6-12th August

Hi all,

Mates and I have recently gotten into a bigger boat, so while we still have the two we've decided to get one final trip out of the 17' Ali Star and a first trip out of the 23' Chivers in the second week of august, if anyonelse is making plans to be around during that time keep an eye out for us!

We've done the run from DHI from deham twice on the smaller boat sticking within a couple of km's of the coast due to a pretty average sounder (operators) and due to limited fuel, even so we've had enough success to return with Pinkies, baldies and macks with not too many sharks.

This trip, weather permitting we the plan is to get into some deeper fishing, hopefully targetting rankins and reds. I've read through some great advice on FW w.r.t. our new sounder the furuno 620 as well as the pretty useful info here: http://www.teamcruisecraft.com.au/images/TUNING%20SOUNDERS.pdf however i'm hoping some of the guys on here with a bit more steep point/DHI experience can offer up some good advice, particularly having only been earlier in the year what we should be targetting?

I'll be sure to posts up some photos and a bit of a report post trip.

Daiwa Ryoga Bay Jigging Reel

has any one used the

The Shredder Mk 2

After building and testing the Shredder as reported in a previous post (http://fishwrecked.com/forum/shredder-ultimate-burley-machine), we set about refining the design to make it better and safer.

The first and major modification was to fabricate a new set of cutting blades so that there was only one tooth per blade.  This was done to provide more cutting power per tooth and stop it jamming when large items were inserted or there was a lot of material in it.  The blade teeth were also aligned so that they “spiraled” into the centre so there was a continual feed of partially shredded material into the “zone of destruction”.  Also added were cleaning elements for each blade to remove unwanted material and assist in forcing material to the zone.

Now, as you can tell, the Shredder cutting head is a very nasty piece of gear so it had to be modified to ensure that there was no risk of getting any body parts near the head or drive chain.  This was done by “encasing” these bits with solid steel plate to protect the operator and/or any onlookers.  The Shredder weighs a lot because of its construction so we needed to make it mobile as it is a bit of a pain moving it with a forklift.  Let’s put it on wheels, so that’s what we did.  An enclosed hopper area under the cutting head was also fabricated so that a shredded material receptacle could be placed there and any “mess” was contained to the unit.  With that done, it was time for a test.

I had a freezer full of frames and various other “waste” from cleaning seafood that I had been collecting.  I think it is fair to say that having the Shredder means that our fish waste to landfill is absolutely zero and this is a really good benefit of the machine.  I probably had 30-40kg of offal to use in the test.  Let’s just say it was evil.  The tub in the hopper would fill in less than 5 minutes and the Shredder would eat the stuff as fast as you could put it in.  Nothing could stand in its way.  The biggest test was a whole frozen 6.2kg salmon that Adam got a month or more ago, that couldn’t be released because it had a 5’0 wedged right down in its gill plate.  The body of the fish had no chance but when we got to the head, the deep hook jammed and had to be removed.  The head by it shape rolled a bit and it took a bit to grab so needed some help.  I don’t think this problem would have existed if the head wasn’t frozen though – just like trying to shred a round block of ice.  Needless to say the end result was a quality shred in a couple of minutes.

With the modifications, you can now stand on the Shredder to facilitate simple cleaning with a hose.  The clean is easy in a few minutes and due to the design there is almost no fish waste.  Roll it into place, lock the wheels, shred away then hose it off, let dry and store.  It doesn’t get much better than that.

After seeing the quality use of burley by the “Big Angry Fish” legends from NZ, we have made some big blocks.  Add in a bit of oil and filler and we could finally get a block of a similar type.  It has to be a good thing to be able to make blocks of that size for use in WA.

Headed out yesterday to give it a try.  It attracted plenty of fish and my highlight was getting an approximate 5ft Tiger Shark to release at the boat (25kg+).  It certainly liked the burley but we will make blocks of different sizes so that we don’t attract the apex predators in too much of a hurry.

All in all the Shredder is a complete success, and now just needs some paint.  Congratulations again to Wal and Dean for building such an awesome device that minimizes fish wastage and produces an excellent, useful end product.

Metro Winters Day - You Wont Believe This!!!

Out with Langa and Bodie today. Hopes of a deep drop were dashed with the fickle forecast so we stayed in shallower on a cold wet winters day…………I have to keep reminding myself this is Perth metro, middle of July………a fair few surprises today!

Day started with a couple of tailor being caught in the 40’s……..strange. A lot of bait around that had attracted the tailor, plus a few other toothy criters……this being my first Mac on jig and it went pretty well on my PE2 jig outfit. Yeeeeoooooooowww!

Tried for a dhuie on jig, but only landed a few just undersize dhu despite some great shows, so headed out a bit deeper into the 60’s and landed this on jig. Metro Winter Rankin Cod!!!!!!!!! Holy crap.

Well with all this strange shit happening, we decided to throw a few lures out for a troll, not something you normally do in Perth in winter, but what the heck, this was one weird day! Did not take long and a double hookup ended with one fish dropped and Bodie landing this nice mac. The man love was building by this stage!

Lures were straight back in with the mac still on the floor being bled and before we could get the fourth lure in we had a triple hookup. The third fish was dropped and as Langa dragged the lure back to the boat a mac smashed the lure in a spectacular surface strike……what a day!

The call went out for a Yellow Fin Tuna……why not! 10 minutes later…..hey presto. Well bugger me!

The new madfish fish bag was certainly christened and was absolutely chocker block full but did a great job of keeping the fish cold on the trip home prior to a marathon filleting session. Will have to take the larger madfish bag out next trip!

Dot think we will have a Metro Winter day like that again for a while.

Father and Son Effort

They may not be monsters but it was he first time the boy and I went out alone and the first time he did all of the fishing unaided. I am so proud of him and am looking forward to our next outing. He was using a Daiwa Catalina egg beater reel and a Demon Blood rod. We were in about 40metres of water.

Is 3.5m big enough

Hi guys,

Will be heading up to Coral Bay in a couple months. I have a 3.5m seajay nomad. just wondering on a calm day would it be worth taking it towards the north passage ( Not out ), somewhere between Mauds beach and the north passage.

Cox Craft Rum Runner II

Has anyone had one or been in one and can give me the low down on the bad or bad points about them?

They look pretty good except the cuddy cabin looks like it is set further back than similar boats taking up deck space.

Ammo dump jetty

gday all, how do you get to this jetty these days? I thought you took the road where the caravan park is, but I got quizzed when I went down there by a not very friendly person.

North 2015

yeah, so I'm back from my 2 month camping trip up north.... I cant believe how quick even that length trip went!

with the missus, 2 girls, and the dawg, it was always going to be more of a family trip, so fishing took a close 2nd place to spending some pretty relaxing days with them.

our first destination was on the Ningaloo coast, at a bit of a secret spot. we were there for 4 weeks, and we were camped next to the in-laws, who are caravanning up there for 6 months. although we didn't do too bad, I was a liiiiittle bit underwhelmed by the fishing there. not complaining, but I spent heaps of time trolling, for not much result, although water temp probably wasn't the best for the Spaniards.

I did put the father in law onto 2 marlin, both within 10 mins of each other, and one of which was a fuckin whopper (for a dinghy anyway) - around 80-90kgs. I remember he kept telling me "nothing is going to take those stupid jellyfish looking lures", and "youre going too fast for any fish to chase those lures"... after no more than 5 mins of pulling the skirts in 65m, and the big girl hit hard, and got nearly completely airborne, no more than 10m behind the boat... that shut him up pretty fuckin quickly. we were the camp heroes when we came back, and he told the rest of the grey haired senile pricks that were camped there what we'd caught!! unfortunately, I didn't get any photos of either of the marlin, but the look of shock & awe on his face when she jumped, and when he realised what he was about to battle, that's something i'll never forget!

it was only towards the end of our time there that I really started understanding how to fish the place, and started getting a few good runs on the board. then we were regularly getting the big spanglies, big coral trout, and also had the big baldies sussed out too. needless to say, we ate pretty well up there.

after a quick supplies top-up in Carnarvon for 2 days, the next half of the trip was to gnaraloo station for another 4ish weeks. again, fishing was a precursor to some quality family time, and we were lucky enough to score some pretty awesome weather there for nearly the whole trip. although I didn't get the boat out much when whilst there, whenever I did, we smashed it. big mackies, BIG coral trout, BIG rankin, BIG baldies, and cobia, were the norm. I had 2 mates drive up for a weekend, one of whom hasn't been there before. needless to say, he left there well impressed with the fishing, especially from a dinghy.

I also managed to get in some quality beach fishing throughout the whole trip, of which I don't usually do around perth. an abundant supply of trevally, queenies, some really good spanglies, and even a few mackies off the beach, always kept us entertained, and without a doubt are unreal meal fresh & in a thai green curry.

it was overall an unbelievable trip, and by far the highlight was spending that much time with my kids (and maybe the missus too). they learnt shit up there, that cant be taught in any class room. they saw sharks, rays, fish, mantas, dugongs, turtles, snakes, animals, etc. they went (most of..) the trip without watching tv/movies, or playing on iphones. I even had my oldest regularly adjusting the solar panels, for maximum sun exposure! funny shit!

anyway, its all over red-rover now, and theres nothing left but some unbelievable memories, and a few good photos. here's a few of those now... enjoy.

scotto.

Cheers lads!
