Landbased fishing
Submitted by jfawkes on Thu, 2013-01-03 08:25Can someone tell me some places in Perth metro or just out of Perth metro that are good for land based fishing at the moment.
Just wherever I don't seem to catch anything decent and sometimes nothing at all.
I was wondering about two rocks but I don't know what its like because I've never been there but I would be very thankful of other peoples ideas.

Boat Ramp Thankyou
Submitted by pharlap on Thu, 2013-01-03 08:08After reading the "Boat Rant" thread below, I was thinking I seem to hear a lot about bad behaviour in Boating, and thought I'd like to hear more about the good things that get done out there, good 'ol Aussie behaviour helping out a mate in need when the props fouled, the motors sh!t itself, Dakka steering cable last week, waters got into the fuel, I've drifted too far and ran out of fuel, I'm sure we all have a story or could tell a story.
Here's mine and it's really simple, we've only had our boat just on 12 months now, we're starting to get it set up how we require it, family, fun, fishing.
Between myself, the Mrs, daughter & son (12 & 13yo) were obviously very new especially around the boat ramps, and have been weary of how much time we take on launching and retrieve, that being said with the help of everyone hear and lots of reading, we're going ok, we get all our ropes and tie ons all off out of the way before we back down etc, were very contious of the boat ramp rules so we don't get in everyone way and become a pain in the butt. We also have limited ourselves to certain ramps around the swan river that have the floating jettys to make it easier until we got better at it.
Tuesday we decided to get down to Point Walter, we didn't end up getting there as early as planned (my fault) and it was a bit breezy, no floating jetty....lets just say for our family it was a challenge, going in was ok cause we were the only one at the ramp getting in, but coming home it was busy, bloody hell....two trailers backing down at a time boats not coming in staright onto trailers, some skippers having the skill to drive it on.
Me I had to obviously wait my turn, back the trailer down, help the family walk the boat across from the sand, it was difficult but we didn't do too bad under the conditions.
To the Guy/Family who was after us again I say "Thankyou" for their patience, once we were both pulled out the wa and all tied down, we went across and thanked them and they were so nice and said like, "No no we were like that when we started out, no problem, he said I wanted to come and help you, but you're never sure what peoples response will be, but I also wanted to see you guys also do it as a crew" which I thought was fantastic....so again to the family in the Brown/Silver. Commodore with Ali. Stacer I think thankyou very much.
That being said from some of the stories I hear, I'm bound to run into one of these "NUTTERS" sooner or later.
Cheers.

Busso jetty surprise
Submitted by Wranger on Wed, 2013-01-02 21:24Fishing on the jetty tonight got a few herring. While putting a Mullie on heard a thud and a flying fish hit the hand rail and landed on the jetty. Quite surprised and so were the people around us.

Advice - Monkey Mia
Submitted by Hovis on Wed, 2013-01-02 20:22First time post so any help advice would be appreciated.
Off to Monkey Mia / Shark Bay area next week and taking the boat (5.7m).
Safety first; are there any local volunteer sea rescue radio services to log on to whilst on the water. If so what channel and their hours of operation would be good to know.
Secondly; gear - any ideas what to take, what local species to target / expect. Only ever fished North Metro before so it will be new ground and only had the boat since May.
Third; what's the ground like generally (not asking for GPS marks so your crown jewels are safe), distance to good ground - fuel conscious.
Thanks.
Steve.

marks off bunbury
Submitted by razor back on Wed, 2013-01-02 19:20I was wondering if anyone out there could help me out. I would like to trade a couple of spots off yalling up for a couple off Bunbury. I live in Collie and would much prefer to fish off Bunbury as it is closer for me than a 2.5hr drive to canal rocks. The spots of Canal rocks i will trade have always given me good fish Dhuies, Nannangai, Queen Snapper, black arse and caught a nice fox fish there on monday.
Every time i have gone off bunbury its like being in a desert. i catch Gurnards. Shit. Any help would be appreciated.
PM me if anyone is willing. Thanks fellas
Deep drop rods
Submitted by STEVE231 on Wed, 2013-01-02 18:18I have recently replaced my old 50/200khz transducer with a new 1kw model more forced by a launching rope mishap and a slightly less than attentive/experienced decky who is now pulling faces at me and threatening not to cook my dinner after reading this back before I post.
Anyway, I'm now thinking I wouldn't mind looking for fish a bit further afield. My question is to the people who are doing the deep drop thing regularly, what rods are you using with your electric reels as I've got not much knowledge on the whole thing.

Cray pot floats
Submitted by Norty on Wed, 2013-01-02 17:05Hi Guys (and gals)
ok so after my last 2 cray pots went missing
I'm going to give it another whirl,
for the ease of spotting my floats from everyone elses
is it acceptable to paint them in fluro colours ie yellow / orange or
some other combination as well as the fishing licence number
would painting the pot somehow scare off the crays as
the plastic brown ones would i guess blend in with weed / reef stuff.
Is fitting a small pole / flag to the floats allowed (like on postie bikes)
for ease of spotting them, i'm normally out solo and looking for white floats
in the glare can sometimes be a bit tricky.
constructive help suggestions welcome
Cheers

Rope for crab nets
Submitted by baggyred on Wed, 2013-01-02 13:58I need to lengthen the rope on the crab nets I bought last year so I can go into deeper water in the Swan.
Not being overly knowledgeable (actually no knowledge at all) - what thickness rope would I need?
Not having pulled up crab pots for many a year - i don't want to buy something too thin, but similarly it doesn't need to be over-engineered.
Also - if I was to crab around Claremont / Mossie Park - what lengths should I have on? 20metres enough?
Any help greatly appreciated.
(I'll be the one spending $100 in fuel/bait/parking to catch two crabs worth $12)

1st flaty on a placcy
Submitted by Justo82 on Wed, 2013-01-02 13:12Down at left bank today flicking around a few bits of squid, plenty of blowies, couple of bream, then decided to try my luck on plastics. Chucked out a SnapBack paddle tail in white and the blowies destroyed it 1st cast. Then switched to a 5" atomic grub in a dark brown. Flicked that around for 15-20 mins then BANG! Not a monster, but a reasonable fight none the less. The feeling of catching something on a piece of rubbery plastic is awesome. I was so stoked I thanked the flatty by putting it back to fight another day. Seeing it swim off healthy was great. It's amazing how hard they smash them!
anyway, I'm stoked, and now hooked on plastics after trying many times with no success.

dunsborough spots
Submitted by donlovesfishing on Wed, 2013-01-02 09:08hi guys. My family and i have relocated to yallingup about 5 months ago. I drive in and out of perth every 6day shift. I was wondering if anyone is kind enough to point me in the right direction or even catchup for a fish offshore sometime. I take my 7/5 yr olds out most times. I was advised to go out to 15-18m make off eagle bay, which i did and sound around which i did but didn't find any productive spots. If someone can give any advice i would b most greatful. Message or replies would really b great. I have a little 18ft fibre glass boat with a relatively new hds 5 sounder, still learning to navigate with.i know no fisho gives his spots away but anything would b great.. tight lines. . Regards Don

Striper-Sea Swirl Boats
Submitted by kelsea on Wed, 2013-01-02 07:12I have been looking at boats and have come across the above mentioned. Does any one have any info on them? I have also been looking at the Trophy 2359 Hardtops with the diesel inboard. I am looking to change from my centre console to a dryer boat as my two little ones and wife are normally with me. As a family we mainly use the boat for fishing, but weekenders aren't out of the question.

Dunsborough
Submitted by JW on Tue, 2013-01-01 16:49Need some local advice please.
Taking boat down to Dunsborough with the family in couple of weeks.
Looking on my charts, I thought Wright Bank looks close enough. The chart states "breaks in moderate swell".
Is it relatively safe? Will have kids on the boat.
Cheers,
