Hds 5
Submitted by donlovesfishing on Tue, 2013-01-08 15:30hi all just struggling to get my hds 5 sounder to perform to its maximum potential. I have tried playing around with it on the water but still no go. On wat setting is best for colourline, sensitivity, cluter, noise reduction, etc. On lambys furuno it clearly shows fish under ledges etc. Can i set my unit to have a split screen and bottom lock so as to c the last 5mtrs of the bottom? Like 5mtrs of the bottom and normal depth the split screen? Wen i tried to set it it seems to show the top 5meters. Probably the furuno 585 is a lot better i assume. Also is it betterr to have ur fish I'd off, to see fish arcs? Any info woild b greatly appreciated.. cheers Don

Quobba in March
Submitted by EKUL on Tue, 2013-01-08 15:12Hi All,
Have booked Quobba for March 18-23rd.
Have just purchased a new Tyrnos 30 and a gladiator LBG 2.4m 15-24kg rod.
Will be geared up with plenty of steel trace and balloons. (lots of lures too)
Any tips you can throw this way would be nice!
Wind in march? where to spin? bottom bouncing off the stones?
Cheers

Tagging Report - Dhufish recaptures
Submitted by Andy Mac on Tue, 2013-01-08 11:27Managed to recapture another two of my tagged fish yesterday. Both had shown signs of barotrauma on initial capture and whilst this was minimised with the regular decompression stop I do on all my released fish, it was still noticeable. However two more recaptures to add to the others over the years and I am convinced, as you all should be by now, that careful slow retirieves and a deco stop on all released fish, matched with a release weight assisted return to the depths should lead to a healthy fishery in years to come.
For the record both recaptures had bearly moved from their home turf, but at their size I would be surprised if they would travel very far.
Tag 77659 initial capture 30/9/12 43cm recaptured 7/1/13 at 45.5cm
Tag 77657 initial capture 30/9/12 37cm recaptured 7/1/13 at 37.5cm
A varied growth rate as you would perhaps expect in a population. By the way my gut has grown a similar amount in that 3 month period (hahaha)
Here are a few pics for those interested

Fisheries to Cull Whites in Dunsborough
Submitted by Seaquest on Tue, 2013-01-08 10:11Coming in past Eagle bay on Sunday we saw a large fisheries boat dropping off large bouys about 1km from the beach.
Just found out from a friend at fisheries that they are baiting for three whites that have been hanging around the bay over the holidays.
With the amount of people down here at the moment and the sharks not moving on I think its a good call.

Fishing Yesterday
Submitted by kelsea on Tue, 2013-01-08 08:18Went out yesterday with the wife and kids. Forecast was wrong again, windy and swell around in the morning. We perservered and pushed on. The results were good. The wife got a 53cm Dhuie, I got a 56cm Flatty, 42cm Black Arse and a 49cm KG. Then the sharks moved in so we moved on. This was then followed up by the kids catching 12 whiting on the way back in. My apologies for the photo's but at least it is something. Oh yeah the fish (other than the whiting) were taken in about 37mtrs and about 12 mile out.

Thats if I can even round up that many friends. Lol. I have tried calling and emailing a few companies but havent heard back yet and need to get in quick if it isnt too late already.

Swan River discussion
Submitted by Flatinator on Mon, 2013-01-07 21:08What's the best gear to be using/what's been working to catch fish such as Bream, Flathead, Taylor etc.. in the Swan River? I've heard soft plastics are really great but whenever I give that a go the blowies just smash it.
Cheers,
Flatinator.

Introduction
Submitted by Daniel Strijk on Mon, 2013-01-07 18:58G'day guys and gals,
I thought I would introduce myself and tell you my background seeing as I am new here.
I have always been interested in most outdoor sports and in particular most things to do with fishing, I grew up fishing with my father and grandfather fishing in Geographe bay chasing whiting, herring and gardies and the always favourite squid. Over the years I turned my attention to freediving and spearfishing which saw me travelling up and down the WA coast chasing everything from dhueys to spanish mackeral but in the last few years I have toned down quite a bit since I lost a good friend in a tragic freediving accident and as I had 2 kids of my own I have decided they are more important.
These days I spend alot of my time fishing for tailor and spaniards locally (in the metro season) and hunting feral animals for my own consumption eg, pigs and goats and eradication and I have noticed an increase over the years in the amount of dogooders and greenies trying (and succeeding most of the time!) to impede on my right to enjoy my choice of recreations. I feel I have been "lucky" to have grown up in possibly the last generation that has had enough freedom to enjoy what this great state has on offer, which as the older ones no doubt will contest it was better back in the days before me! but I'll be damned if my kids dont have the same opportunity.
I will now let you know I am currently the Vice Chairman of the newly formed Shooters and Fishers Party WA but by no means am I on here to gather support or preach to the converted but to rather hear about the concerns fisherman like yourselves so we can better prepare ourselves and be the voice of reason in parliament and stop the extreme greens/animal liberationalists.
I apologise in advanced if this sounds long winded or a promotion of the political party I stand for but I feel very strongly about pro rights for our given recreations.
Cheers
Daniel

Whats with Rays and Port Jacksons
Submitted by pharlap on Mon, 2013-01-07 08:48Went out Saturday morn off Ocean Reef between left hand cardinal mark and 3 mile reef, and all we could manage to attract was Rays and Port Jackson Sharks, one PJ was nearly 3 to 4 foot long, rays were a pain in the arse though.
Dunsborough Run Part Two
Submitted by Seaquest on Mon, 2013-01-07 08:25Headed out yesterday with Dave (wind on dave) and my mate Jay from Perth. Some of you might reconise Jay from Chandler marine. Also teamed up with Lamby and his boat.
The weather was pretty ordinary and made fishing tough but both boats managed to find heaps of good fish. Was a fun day with heaps of banter over the radio between the two boats.
Double header of small sambos on the jig.

Jay with the biggest dhuy of the day.

Group shot of the boys and their dhuys.

And last but not least Lambys contribution to the day.

Shimano Waxwing double hook opinions?
Submitted by tainted on Sun, 2013-01-06 21:41Hey People,
Just curious what everyone elses opinions where on this lures. Was down at trig this evening and they were getting chomped but I failed to get any hook ups. A bit frustrating although good to see they worked. Has anyone changed the hooks out for trebles or singles? I was using them straight out the box without touching up the hook points. Would this make that much difference?
On a side note I was breaking in xmas present (9' Daiwa Lateo Pirate) and could feel all the action through it but I think the rods action was a little to slow to be able to set the hook properly. Maybe my FWA rod would be better due the higher line rating?
Was using the Boy size if that makes a difference to anyone.
Cheers, Tainted.
PS The bonus of the up turned twin hook is I at least avoided the reef.

HELP WANTED, New to fishing.
Submitted by Scotti Fishnogood on Sun, 2013-01-06 14:52New to fishing & have all the gear. 4.84 savage Tasman & all the right gear. Been trawling off rocky point deep & shallow with some good results but its time to hit the reef. 6 & 12 mile. I live near back packers on geograph bay rd. Is it just a matter of heading 6 or 12 mile NW & I'm on the reef?? What are best conditions to head out there safely & to get onto a good snapper or Juey??? Never caught either. Do I just drift over the reef until there's no more lumps on the sounder & go back?? Would u go out on days like today 6th jan
Also want to get some big whiting. How deep & where??? Seen some big sand patches between Dunsy & Vasse flying over
thanks for any help, if any1's keen to go out let me know. New mates are always good to find.

Geofenced Lowrances
Submitted by timboon on Sun, 2013-01-06 12:43Ok so my last post was asking for help with importing a Lowrance sounder, now i`m decided on either the
HDS 5xGen2 ( $630 delivered ) or the Elite 5x ($410 delivered ),
At the end of the day its mainly going to be used bottom bouncing in my Dingi in 40 odd mtrs down south so a reliable unit that is pretty user friendly is what i`m after....
Of the two Units mentioned above the Gen2 seems to be Geofenced ( i dont mind if its only imperial measurments )
Is there other things that will affect me making it unusable unless it gets unlocked??
Cheers Tim
