fish frames in the water
Submitted by piscetor on Tue, 2024-02-27 12:10A bloke on the radio was saying his mate got a $350 fine for putting fish frames back into the water. i had a look on the interner and it said the currently it is not illegal to do it. If thats the case what the hell was fisheries giving him a fine for? of don't they know their own rules and regs. maybe not right chucking the back in but if its not illegal fisheries shouldn't have issued the fine but tried to educate the person on better ways of doing it.

Flathead outwide
Submitted by timboon on Fri, 2024-02-23 01:10Crew,
Have any of you fellas chased Flattys outwide???
Its somethins we used to do in SA, fish the 70-90m depth and usually do pretty well...
Gummys and a few other bits and bobs were a bonus...
I know its not uncommmon to get a flatty jump on a puka jig outwide but could be another target species during there demersal closure periods...

Insurance for penned/dry docked boat in the north west
Submitted by roddo on Wed, 2024-02-21 21:29Looking for advice on an insurance company or a broker.
I have recently purchased a 32ft fishing boat and I'm struggling to find someone to insure it, it's currently located in carnarvon and this is where it will sit on stands for the next few months for a new fitout untill I put it in the water when a penn becomes available in exmouth or a mooring in dampier but every insurance company I have spoken to so far have said due to the location they won't Insure it,
surely someone out there will insure it otherwise I can't put it in the penn when it's available.
Cheers
Rod

Reallocation of 20 tonnes back to the Recreational Fishing sector - Recfish announcement
Submitted by Ush on Wed, 2024-02-14 13:07I guess many would agree that the recent changes in the demersal fishery were over the top, it appears we have given an additional 4 weeks from 1 August to 15 Oct instead of 15 Sept - Thanks.
However for an inshore fisho mainly fishing the sounds for snapper, nothing changes. :(

Herring lures
Submitted by C.P on Tue, 2024-02-13 09:55I sold my boat about a year ago and have switched to land based fishing. I've had some success catching whiting and flathead off the beach at Silver Sands with ZX lures, all small fish but lots of fun with lures and light spin gear. Soft plastic minnows work great also and the last couple of days I've caught a few herring on them. Problem is, the bloody blowies snip the tails off soft plastics and I have to constantly replace them on the jig head, so i think I'll give up on that idea.
Can i have a few suggestions please, for light lures for herring off the beach? I know they bite on just about anything when they're really hungry but what works best, casts well and doesnt get damaged by blowies?

Assholes amongst us
Submitted by Swompa on Mon, 2024-02-12 14:52Went out to get my pots on Saturday to bring them home. They had been in a shallow bay on the back of GI for a few weeks with the rope all coiled up (30m rope in 5m of water), with the pots in sand.
As we entered the bay, i couldnt see them. We putted around and could make out what looked like a pot on the bottom.
We anchored nearby and I jumped in and sure as hell, there was my pot, with the rope and floats all shoved in it.
The rope was still cable tied up so it wouldnt have gotten in anyones way.
Some asshole had pulled it, shoved everything into the pot and thrown it back in.
With some other rope onboard i was able to dive down, tie on a new rope and we retreieved it but we couldnt find the other one.
It must have only recently happened as there was no growth on the floats.
Who even takes time to think about doing that?

Overhead rod help
Submitted by ricey on Sat, 2024-02-10 22:06Hi crew.
I have a one piece rod that became a two piece low in the rod holder... jigging master rod I love(d).
I was using it for deeper and heavier bottom bashing with a talica 12 using on average 24oz sinker (great set up), deep jigging and recently deep dropping with a daiwa megatwin (not what it was designed for ... snapped).
So I have two needs a replacement PE4-6 overhead... anyone selling or got some recommendations...
Secondly a deep drop rod... plan A is glue on a solid butt to bottom of jigging master rod... but need a wide diameter butt to do that... any ideas. Seems a shame to throw rod out... but a straight rejoin likely to break again.
Cannot find a local rod builder too!
Or just a replacement overhead deep drop rod... again any suggestions.
Cheers for any thoughts.

west of dirk hartog
Submitted by Sea goat on Mon, 2024-02-05 12:49hi Guys.
I will be heading to denham with a few mates mid march for a fishing trip.
towing up the boat, and was hoping if weatherpermits to go out west side of dirk hartog.
I have read a bit about swell etc aorund turtle bay can be pretty rough. just wondering what the best passage put would be?
best to head to tip of dirk hartog, then out to open ocean?
or can you get through the south?
not looking to camp on the boat overnight, just wantng to get out to the ocean side to target some reds, and have some respite form the sharks.
Just wondering what conditoons people would avoid. im assuming being offshore then ideal would be a weak e/se? avoid nw?
any advice or particulr things to watch out for would be greatly appreciated!
cheers
Goat.

Warnbro Sound Crabs ?
Submitted by paulbazza on Fri, 2024-02-02 13:22Decided yesterday to have a try for some blueys in Warnbro Sound , our first time crabbing in this part of Rockingham.
We had half the nets in the deep water, 17M , out from the old pub site , and half in the shallow, 5M .
We did not see 1 crab ! Another boatie came passed us, he had not caught any either !
Is the Sound crabless now ? Is there to much sand that it has changed their environment ?
Or was it just one of those days ?
I used to see plenty of snorkellers diving for crabs out from the Carlisle St boat ramp ( how none of them got run over during cray season i dont know !!) , but i cant say that i have seen anybody diving there for a long time.
I have seen recently a boat with drop nets in the pond on 2 occassions. Not sure if he caught anything , and also not sure of the water quality in there ?
Was still nice on the water, and good to give the boat a run.
Ended up having to pull some frozen cray tails out for dinner :)
