Last Hoorah for the Soupster

What a day last Saturday turned out to be. I was lucky enough to get out on Pete D's boat for a my last fish and dive in WA as I am very shortly moving to Micronesia with the family for the next three years. The last month has been nothing but work, work, work while we are prepared to move, so to get out on a rare cracka day was welcome relief.

It was an early start and we pretty much got the diving out of the way first. We dropped on a previously unexplored (by us anyway) spot and quickly got into some crays. Pete cleaned up quickly as he always does and also looped a nice harli. I managed to achieve something that has avoided me to this point. A jumbo. I've seen a few in the past and they have always been well tucked in and out of reach. So to finally get one was an awesome feeling. One is definately enough as I'm happy to let the big males be. He was just over three kilos with a 165mm head. There is photo of my neighbour holding a 79mm cray beside the jumbo, what a difference.

Then it was into the fishing. All I can say is that we proved the new fishing rules are definately working, for us anyway. Between three of us we release five dhuies (four sized between 55 and 65cm) in the hope of a couple of bigger ones. We also released four black-arse (a species that I predict will really benefit from the new restrictions). Jimmy (the third guy on the boat) landed the biggest black-arse I have ever seen, well over 50cm and I took home a nice baldie. No large dhuies were boated but none of us felt too bad about that at all (however we will keep a small one next time and then release all further dhuies as we search for a larger one).

So all in all it was a great final day for me out on the water. Thanks Pete.

diving today

headed out from hillaries today for a dive and managed 5 crays (2 were undersize) and a 2.5kg harley on the loop in 6m of water. Visibility was good with very little surge. Got one big boy over 110mm other were around 85mm, All crays bar 1 were reds with one red being quite soft still. Seems like the whites are starting to thin out close to shore. A good day none the less...

Todays catch

Went for a fish today to get my fishing fix and to get some fish for xmas. Took out Joe Amarto today and started at 5:30am to fish for some whiting  as bait. With half a dozen in the tank it was time to make the journey. We arrived at tide changed and had our bag in 2 hours and left them still biting.

Weekend of fishing and diving

Went out on a friends boat to Rotto on Saturday. After not doin so well the week before ( small crays around GI), we were keen to find some good crays. With me being new to it all, Jarred led the way and on the first dive and found one cave with about 20 crays in it. We ended up with 5 size ones after the first dive. just after we clipped the tails fisheries showed up and checked our licence and the cray sizes.

On the second dive we decided to go really shallow (2.5m) so we could have a longer dive and we were surprised to find a few monster crays, jarred ended up getting one of them, the biggest cray ive ever seen!! (remember it was only my 3rd ever cray dive).

Even though we only got six, all by jarred, it was still a great day, gotta love havin an island like rotto just off our coast!

On Sunday I went out hoping to hit up some skippy on the 3 mile. I was using my new favourite bait and rig, small bluebait on smaller gangs with a swivel and a tiny sinker.  The first lump produced only lots of wrasse and a breaksea cod, all realased ofcourse.

We decided to head back and try one more spot in shallower water. found a lump in about 9.5m and burleyed up. after a few more pestering wrasse, i loosened the drag and put the rod down to pick up my phone...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZ   a huge hit!, put my phone down and picked up the rod. It didnt feel like a skippy, I was hoping it was a small sambo (havent caught one yet) and after a bit of a fight keeping the drag loose not wanting the little hooks to bend or break, a nice dhufish surfaced. My first one too! (havent had a boat long) we got it into the boat for a quick photo and then it was put back to fight another day.

carbontex drag washers

Hi Guys

I am sick of my Stradic having a lumpy/pulsating drag.  I have greased the washer's ect but it is just a crappy drag. The next thing i am going to try is carbontex drag washers. Can anyone reccommend a certain brand, there seems to be a lot online and the price's vary quite a lot for the same components.

Thanks

Sam's PB Sambo

It is only fair that she has bragging rights for a very long time.

Strange catch at Seabird

My strange catch was at seabird last year, from the beach landing a baby Cobia and releasing. Spun me and my buddy out. I'm a regular up there and will post more of my exploits from boat and beach.Cool

Strange catch at Woodman point Jetty

Just got back from a trip to woodman point jetty, came back with an extra rod and reel. My friend hooked a rod out, was a blue jarvis walker rod and an abu garcia reel.Laughing

Crayfish today

Went for a solo dive today as I couldn't get anyone at late notice. My work mate Joe Amato maned the boat while I was down. The wind was strong first thing this morning which I thought it was going to be hell underwater with surge, but surprising there was no surge where I was and vis was about 7m. The crays were in large numbers most being whites. They were crawling all over each other but deep under cover. There were still a lot on the edges of the reef. I bagged out in just 20min. 5 were large whites and 1 red.

this arvos tailor sesh

went for a quick sesh this arvo, south of white hills. was prime tailor weather so long as ya dont mind of sand blastin around the ankles.

the feed

i arrived about 4:30 ish and was on after a few casts

thinking it was gunna be a hot tailor session i was surprised wen the next cast after the tailor i pulled up a plump little soapy around the 40cm mark, followed by a 45cm fish, then the biggest of the tailor alo around 45cm, and another soapy just shy of legal at 49cm. in between snags and running out of bait i managed another tailor and on the last cast another 40cm soapy. pretty happy with the way the baby mullas pulled so it was a fair consellation, just a pity i couldn't get their mum and dad!

Boat rebuilds

Seems every second member of Fishwrecked either has or is modifying their boats from minor repairs to complete rebuilds.

Is it time to have a comp to see who has been the MADDEST person to rebuild a boat in 2009?

few bream caught over winter

a few bream caught over winter landbased and from boat

and even more Tailor

Talk about the early bird...... and just as well . The plan was to meet up with Sherbs at 3.45am, so we could set up with a bit of spare time to get the casting shoulders limbered up before the Tailor woke at first light. Nothing ever goes how you expect.

First bait in the water smashed within seconds. Then the second ..... and third...... After a very busy hour the buckets were looking pretty full, so Sherbs decides to launch out with the lures. Again, first cast smashed. He had a ball, hooking plenty, but unfortunately not landing any.

What a great way to start the day.

As we were wandering off, Uncle Stu turned up & twisted Sherbs arm (yer-right) to stay. Their probably still at it :)

Tuna

Check this baby out.

fish at last

G'day all

Just a quick post to say finally, and only for a few hours I might add, the weather here in 'ol blighty actually brightened up and the wind dropped, allowing me to get out for a few hours on a local lake.  I was fishing very light tackle, 4lb main line and 1.14lb hooklink to a size 20 hook with maggot for carp and roach.  I caught 18lb of fish including carp to 4lb and perch(redfin) to about 1.5lb, unfortunately no photos but thought I would let you know that I was still fishing and not been washed away by the floods!!  Next sunday I have a cod and conger trip off the isle of wight, so watch this space...weather permitting!!!

Tight lines and keep posting as the photos of the awesome fish will draw me back quicker!!!

PB flattie

Long time user, first time posting here. I have recently relocated to QLD from WA and have found it hard to find a decent place to fish around here. We went on a fishing journey up to Hervey Bay recently to wet a line off the local pier when we caught this flattie off a live tailor. Not used to seeing decent sized flathead that we initially thought it was a baby shovelnose shark when it came to the surface! Definately a PB. He probably weighed around 7kg and was about 90cm long.
