Australia Day in Pohnpei for the Soupsters
Submitted by soupster51 on Fri, 2010-01-29 05:32Howdy All. I've nearly been over here in Micronesia for four weeks now and work has been pretty busy. Managed to take the boat out for Australia Day and gave my wife Nic her first taste of fishing over here. We trolled just outside the reef breaks and managed a solid wahoo on a halco deep diver. We made Nic wind it in and she nearly didn't have the energy to hold it up for a photo. Needless to say she was stoked. Finished the day off with a looky/see dive; great to be in the water in a pair of boardies instead of 8mms of wetsuit.

Blackwood Bream Australia Day style
Submitted by damo6230 on Wed, 2010-01-27 16:23Decided to hit the Blackwood with Zap. It's been to long between trips.
Hit the water about 7am and decided to stay around the area near Alexandra bridge as the wind was blowing and it offered some protection.....
Didn't take long for the bream to find our lures.....
The old trusty Luckycraft 48DD pointer never lets me down.
Zap was already beating me though......
For those astute lure fisherman you will recognise the Bassday Sugardeep lure but notice a fundimental difference. Upon hitting the river and opening Zap's tacklebox we immediately noticed most of his expensive Japanese lures had melted. Yes thats right they had melted due to heat exposure and most were now deformed. Look at the tail of the lure and you will see the indentation resulting from heat exposure.
Needless to say we used them to see how they would perform and you can see that although a little deformed thay swam true and killed the fish. That particular lure was the stand out. Zap's first fish fell to a Luckycraft Shingo that had melted and was "bent". Well he pinged a fish straight away and his next cast it got smashed......was laughing my arse off at Zap's bewildered expression and needless to say the next two lures, all deformed, got smashed.......still laughing at Zap's facial expression standing there with rod in hand contemplating the fate of his three $25 dollar lures.....
The lucky lure now adornes his pool room mantelpiece.
So a trend has now been instigated. Purchase an expensive Japanese bream lure, leave it in the sun for some "special" treatment and cast away at the notoriously fussy bream. Zap outfished me all day on his lures and I matched his selection with mine straight out of the box........
I did use some soft plastics and the standout was the 2" gulp prawn on a owner 1/16 jighead, fished deep. Couldn't stop the big fish and we both got smoked....they hit hard and fast.
Was a fantastic day on the water and some more pictures. Easliy 15-20 in the boat with many lost and some big bust-offs.
That sugardeep just keep producing the goods.
Might have to leave some Exi lures out in the sun.........

First Tailor for the Season 4 Us
Submitted by tommytomato on Wed, 2010-01-27 00:06Went fishing tonight, with our crab burley and a block of mulies and rig up and ready for action, straight on Sunset the tailor hit hard
biggest I have ever caught at the local beach in Rockingham
biggest which is next to phone was 50 plus cm's, between 3 of us we caught 9 Tailor, two where used as live bait, 7 herring and 5 Yellow and one garfish
live bait rod went off and my daughter Jasmine shit her self, was a good laugh to see her do the spider monkey dance, quick dad the rods going off, turn out to be Mrs dolphin taking the live Tailor.
thats about it, was a good warm night down there.

Two Virgins Converted
Submitted by Pete D on Thu, 2010-01-21 08:15Shabba and myself were invited down by Ryan TT for an evening of Marron hunting on Tuesday. We both had never hunted Marron before, so anticipation was high.
We headed off mid arvo with our first stop being the Pinjarra Bakery. The beef chilli pies were awesome.
An hour later we arrived at our destination and removed our blind folds. Hmmm, nice water.
We conducted the traditional walk with cold beer in hand, to 'stake' our territory and got the low down on proceedings from Ryan.
A few more quiet ales, a dip in the water and finally the sunset.
We set our pellets and waited not too long before our first look. Ryan was up first to show the way and it wasn’t long before the first marron was snared, measured and bagged. We basically took turns (team effort) and snared another 7 for the night before calling stumps. An average night apparently, but it was an awesome way to spend an evening.
Many thanks again Ryan for sharing your ways, oh and Marron…..good thinking mate. Sharmane says, yeah go again - they were very tasty!
The boys checking out the Weber.
The boys on a plate.
Cheers Pete

While I've still got my Tourism SA hat on.....
Submitted by Lucky Tim on Thu, 2010-01-07 13:14I started flicking through a few old photos from when I lived in SA so I thought I’d chuck a few up while I’ve still got my Tourism SA hat on.
Couple of nice KG’s
For those who don’t dive- greenlip abalone and seal
Nice 25lb snapper 2km from the ramp
Bit of a freshwater mix up- brown trout and Murray cod on cast lure
Southern Bluefin Tuna school rippling, and the final product on cast plastic
30kg plus SBT from another day
Yalata Mulloway
A productive day’s bottom bouncing
Big southern rock lobster-excuse the double chin
Bight Redfish and Harlequin
Great White shark that hung around for over an hour chasing our snapper
Blue Groper
Salmon from the Cactus Beach cliffs
Finally a big sambo. Not a big deal in WA but the first big one we got in SA after quite a bit of trying. This was kept and tasted quite good.

Sambo Jiggie Jig Jig
Submitted by rowie89 on Wed, 2010-01-06 22:38We had a great day out today, Every line down every drift we hooked up.
For the first time EVER the mister out fished me (only by about 1kg lol)
The 2nd pic is my first one for the day. He was pretty much the same size as the second one but im thinking the second one was a little smaller, it still killed me.The last picture is of Kye (the mister) scary hey? the fish he has was the smallest he got of the day (still bout 20kg) so he thought a mouth shot would be better lol.
We will be moving up 2 kalbarri in 2 weeks so if anyone has any good spots out there for anythign that that can share feel free. :-)
We did have to chase some other boats fish and put him back down the bottom as i dont think they noticed he didnt got down. Word 2 the wise if you see some other boats fish floating n cant get back down give the fish a hand. might teach the new guys how 2 do it right.
All our fish released well. we watched all of them go 2 the bottom of the sounder before we set the drift again.

new rods, snow and a pb!!
Submitted by Roger Knife on Wed, 2010-01-06 20:55Hello again fellas
Just a quick update again. Blanked again on sunday and fractured the carbon in my rod in the cold...i think thats what did it anyway!! Good news though they replaced it with a brand new one in the shop. An awa shima in 2.4m model with an extension to make it 2.7m...happy days.
Snow has arrived in abundance and although I got the day off work, its no good for fishing which is not ideal
And as promised a picture of my pb whiting i caught over christmas, its not a monster but at 2lb 11oz its pretty big for round here. Take care lads.

Trip To False Entrance
Submitted by JoRn on Thu, 2009-12-31 08:50hi guys,
Just got home from a 4 Day trip to False Entrance last night and thought i'd share some photos up, and how we went.
We went left on Sunday at 3am and arrived 12 hours later....the track is at its best atm, so we arrived alot sooner that we had expected, however with some heavy towing and an aging memory of the location (dads) took us a bit longer to our fishing destination.
In short, the trip was excellent...however as we prepared for our first fishing session we realised with had forgot the cliff gaff, my dad and i were pointing the blame at each other, i had all the gear...he just didnt pack properly (thats my version)
so we fished anyway that evening and landed a number of tailor...we could only land smallish ones around 2kg mark...anything bigger we couldnt lift up and would consequently lose....as our luck had it...we only caught big ones.
the night went on and we managed a couple of pink snapper (couldnt land), a few sharks - couldnt land either and a number of unstoppables.
we retired that night at around 10pm and put on our mcguyver hat on, i really should take photos of our makeshift gaft...it went something like this
5 10/0 jigging hooks tied togehter and a shackle attached....this should work...admiring our master piece we went to bed...
4am the next day...wake up...coffee..gear...and makeshift gaft...ready to fish...see photo 1...
it was low tide and fishing was a bit slow...until this big mackie grabbed my mates lure and went airborne...the fight was on....10mins of so later it was lying under the cliff a waiting to be gaffed...i dont know how long it took us to try...the idea worked...until u lifted it and the hook would just rip off the fish...#(@*$#(@*$#(@*@$#
we didnt want to fish anymore, becuase 1 - if we tried to land it i think we would just kill it...if we cut the line..thats $20 bucks gone...so breakfast time.
The trip was taking a downturn...and i was feeling quite sour...actually depressed.
Then comes roaring through the ranger...we paid our fees and told him..he just laughed...he wasnt sure when another group would be coming..he think it was in 2 days...bugger...but he had a spare gaff that we could borrow our buy...so our morale was high again...
Problem 2...FUEL...his campsite was over in steep point...which is about 2 hour trip there and back...we had 60l of fuel but that was for the generator (antique honda which uses 1 litre and hour)...and if we went we may not have enough fuel to get out...we had half a tank left..and that was enough for us to get back to the overlander.
so the plan was...put the spare fuel in the car go to steep point...get the gaff go back to the overlander...refuel and come back...will be in time for the afternoon session. ( i think its about 150km or so from false entrance to the overlander 2-2.5hour drive...one way)
wheels were in motion and soon enough my old man and i were on our way...ive never been to steep point before, but i now know why ppl love that place..it was beautiful.
anyhow, got the gaff...(thanks paul your awesome)
because we didnt have the camper trailer in tow, fuel consumption was a lot lower and we decided not to refuel and skimp out on the generator, turning it off at night.
so we made it back to the site, and 30mins later another group came...we spare gaff...hahaha...doesnt matter...better safe than sorry.
so we armed ourselves witht he fishing gear and went down to fish...1 hour passed nothing was landed...we had a few follows but thats was about it. A member from the the other group joins us, belts out a trebler...few winds..and he is on...WTF hahaha Jealous/envy level..would be a 11 out of 10. it was landed and a beauty...
shortly after my dad hooks up... see photo 2
then the next few days...was fishing fishing fishing..it wasnt 1 after another...but we definitly got our limits...and left with a big grin on our faces...
We caught a number of spanish mackers...the one my dad caught weighed in at 15kg, but i am pretty sure it was alot heavier that that.
all the macks were around that size, i didnt bring down the camera that much and didnt take many photos of the fish.
we caught and loss a fair number of spanish mackeral
some shark mackeral
and a tuna...it had yellow fins but cant decide wehther its a yellowfin or a long tail...
i'll let the photos do the talking now, since i think i've talked to much.
hahaha

Bass Boys, 28th Dec
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2009-12-29 09:34Shaun (Shabba) is a good mate of mine and fishes with me alot. He recently said to me, my uncle Michael is coming out from the UK Ryan and he has caught a sambo before (a big one) but he hasnt got a big deepwater fish and was keen to have a go!
I said yeh, when he arrives i'll get him out there weather permitted. Yesterdays forecast was looking good and headed out gentlemans hours. The easterly was still blowing and I took my time getting out there and marking heaps of new ground on the way out!
On the way out and at the destination I was supprised at seeing no boats, despite the boat ramps being packed out. On arrival at the deepwater I started searching, took me a while to locate some fish but not bitting on jigs or baits mmhhhh. Not content with that i said to the guys a bit of patience and I will find them!
The outcome;
Shabba got a double headed of Bass Groper on patternoster but lost one of them half way up, put up a great fight indeed;
Next drift, it was Michael turn and after seeing Shabba's fish Michael dropped the baits over slowly thinking of the pain ha ha. Michael got a few touches and I said dont strike just let it take the bait. The rod fully loaded up and he was on. He got a double headed and make him work hard with the fish taking drag off my reel with a strong setting. Shabba and myself were pissing ourselves as he engaged into a figh with 2 big Bass Groper from the deepwater and we are talking a trout fisherman ha ha LOL
Michael did extremely well, the outcome coming to my boat;
Both fish were Michaels (RH person) - double header - but obviously he couldnt hold up both ha ha LOL
I said we'll I'm happy with that lets go in, the boys said you have to drop Ryan, I thought one drop with jig and we're going as its along way home. Drop my Sanme jig and got a Baracoutta, I said OK one more drop as I cant finish on that note, one more drift and whamo i'm on!
Ended up a Blue-Eye Trevalla on Sanme 650 jig;
** 4 drifts, left them bitting, all fish were brough up manually and the Bass Groper weighed between 26.5kg and 28.9kg on my digital scales (frames will go to research)
** Was a great session fella's, next trip sambos for Michael, will seem like easy work that will ha ha!!
