My Salmon Trip 2010
Submitted by Percula on Mon, 2010-03-29 21:54Hey All
Last weekend was the time for the annual salmon hunt down dunsbrough way!
Was a very successful weekend with schools the whole time we were there, even left a school sitting there on sunday when we left. We were so tired from running up and down the beach!
As soon as we hit the beach, 7am Saturday morning, there was a massive school sitting right on the beach. This resulted in multiple hook ups and first fish landed by 7:10. The first fish makes the weekend a success, and anything after this is a bonus.
Saturday lunchtime the rain came down so this gave us some time to fuel on on food and catch our breath!
Round 2 later in the afternoon once the rain disappeared resulted in more fish. Again as soon as we rocked up we spotted a school moving down the beach. Back into in and a few more fish landed.
Sunday saw us at the beach the same time again, 7am. Again another school, this time to the other side of the rocks. This school was the biggest I had seen here and they were close to the beach. Swell was up this day though so needed to have your casting shoulder warmed up and firing lures in the right direction. So many people on the beach so the school hit the bottom and was hard work getting them to strike, but it was possible. Cast behind them, let the lure sink to the ground then crank and twitch and put as much action into the lure as possible. As the swell was pumping metal lures was the only way to go.
We also landed 3 tailor for the weekend which was a first for us!
Pictures to follow!
Picture titles
1. The cast
2. The hookup
3. The result
4. Double
5.Another - gives the spot away but everyone knows it now!
6. Which one is better looking??!!

deep sea jig?!
Submitted by mr_dhuie on Mon, 2010-03-29 19:52rigged up this jig differently to my other ones for hapuka and ruby ect...
the back hook is a 10/0 with split rings and a ball bearing swivel
the front two hooks are attached with 100lb nylon coated wire and set into place with a heavy duty lacky band. the hooks are set outwards and when the fish takes the jig the rubber band will snap and they will fight only against the wire.
who likes and who dosen't.
i'm not sure whether it will work or not.
cheers

Personal Best Bream in bunbury:)
Submitted by drew_ward on Fri, 2010-03-26 16:24i went fishing a month or so ago, pulled up 2 my favourite bream spot on my favourite secret moon phase for bream to find an old blue heeler trapped up on the river bank i tried to pull him up but couldnt get a good grip i decided to go for a bit of a swim(too bad it wasnt summer)the water was freezing i got up behind him and pushed him up 2 shore.found his owners number took him home to an old couple. apparently he had been missing since 11pm the previous night.by then it was pretty dark so i was summing up to just go back home or go for a fish. being the keen fisherman i am i cant believe i even thought to go back home. back down the river(secret) i wet my line 5 minutes later looked up at the rod bending almost to the water and massive head shakes, had hooked it self running, straight for the snags, picked up the rod cranked up the drag i was calling it for a soapie and then i seen that beuatiful bronzy purple just turn over in the water i KNEW it was my biggest bream i HAVE to land this fish.got him out of the snag with a bit of help by holding the spool from spinning:):):)grabbed the leader and BANG landed my pb black bream..i was STOKED.40cm and weighed in at 1kilo...rod was back in the water with in seconds bang 2 more nice size bream on the bank..only kept 1 that night happily release the other 2:)awsome session

Todays dive
Submitted by silly on Sun, 2010-03-21 19:34went for a dive off Mindarie and bagged out on crays for the first time in my short craying career. Size wasnt too bad with all well over size (80mm+). What was unusual I aslo stumbled across a southern cray and after an epic battle i managed to nab him. Almost lost him a couple of times tho and would have been spewing if i did coz no one would've believed me. Anyway what are the southern's like to eat? Do we usually see them this far up?
Anyway here are the pics.

We are moving to Groote Eylandt..yipeee
Submitted by wadetolley on Thu, 2010-03-18 13:25Hi guys ! At last we have signed contracts, and on the 26th of April, we are moving to Groote Eylandt. 4 days on 4 days off, gives you plenty of time for fishing. But being 500kms from the nearest fishing shop is going to be hard to take, but it will keep Claire away from the shops as well. Have attched a map of area around Groote..mmmm where do i going fishing first, is the question!

Local Greenback
Submitted by DazSamFishing on Sun, 2010-03-14 23:01Well, we had some great weather over the weekend & I wasn't confident heading down to my local beach for a sesh. From past experiences, no wind nor swell isn’t too productive for choppers, mullas & pup sharks.
After keeping a close eye on seabreeze, I noticed the swell & wind had marginally picked up. The decision was made to give it a crack & Sam was keen to watch, so I knew having her around would bring some good luck.
Arrived around 5:30pm & sent some burley out in hope to get a few hezza's (for bait). Unfortunately, the herring weren't around (it's been a while since they have shown). The finger size whiting were in abundance so I gave up after 30 minutes.
I waited for the sun to disappear & sent out some mulies. Not long later, I was onto the first chopper! Bingo, some fresh mulla bait!
By this stage, the missus was getting cold & asking the ‘what time is it’ question.
I took a healthy slab off the chopper & rigged it up. About 3 minutes after it hit the water, the rod buckled over! After working it to the shoreline & over the reef, I was surprised to see an above average metro greenback! I was quite lucky it didn’t bite through the 60lb leader because the leading snelled hook was down it’s throat.
A few pics later, I sent him back into the water!
I begged the missus for a bit more time & threw another slab out. The reel started singing & I waited a moment before I set the hook. I called it for a mulla due to it’s tail kicks & the distinctive first run with the bait. Unfortunately, I lost it at the reef!
Til next time fellas.

Exmouth 2009 photos
Submitted by bigbadbustling on Thu, 2010-03-11 17:56Exmouth trip May 2009
Me and 2 mates went up for a week last year, neither of my mates had been up there and fished properly (when I say properly I mean, sports fishing for the thrill, not soaking baits for hours to fill the eskies with their old man as kids for instance).
I don't think I threw anything else but poppers, and after 1 or 2 days my mates were equally as convinced as they were pulling better quality and sized fish. We pretty much fished the expanses inside the reef along the west coast. I had done this type of thing twice before in the 2 years prior with a different posse of mates but they all bailed on me this time round. Suffice to say they were spitting chips becoz this was far and away the best we had done to date.
hopefully i can get this thread to work properly but please excuse me if i stuff it up on my first ever post on this website. decided it was time to contribute something after being a long time reader of this site and seeing everyone elses quality fishing photos.
dirty big squid, the DEC officers we saw later that day at the fillet station said it was the biggest they had seen in a long time...but he got me back
....but hey, I'm top of the food chain and the squid rings as thick as ya thumb for entree and spanglie for mains went down a treat
double hookup to cobia and a golden
result 1
but i got mine in, i think the noah (only one of them) bit off more than he could chew on the cobia
triple hook-up, fish landed all at the same time but no free hands for a good trio photo
another multiple hook-up, happened so often it wasn't funny, its pretty easy with the trevors, but the caramel heads were chasing our poppers in packs when it was over cast, and i havent even put the photo of our pelagics up, double hookup spanish, yellowfin tuna

Walpole Bream Spectacular
Submitted by damo6230 on Mon, 2010-03-08 16:03It's been a while and been nagging Zap to hit the pole so we headed down for the weekend. Left Bunbury Friday morning and returned Monday arvo. No rush.
Was up at first light after a relaxing friday afternoon drinking a few beers and setting up the gear and talking tactics.
Full battle stations and engine running (and thats Zap arming the Humminbird side imaging with new down imaging sounder, no photos as we aren't giving all our secrets away )
And yep what beatuiful glassy conditions. Decided to hit the headlands around Walpole inlet and the first casts resulted in fish......for the next hour or so.
The fish were just crawling all over our lures. Have been given a digital camera so I was eager to shoot some shots to see how she works. Here's some shots.
This is a Maria Fake Bait floating twitch/stickbait. And what a lure it is. Was smacking the bream as we threw them into the rocky headlands and twictched em back just under the surface. Hooked up after a few cranks of the Sol.
Atomic Hardz and this would have to be my favourite colour. Whether it be in the Blackwood or here it just smacks the fish. Fished best again over the rocky headlands in shallow. Another great visual lure and you can see the fish hit it.
Have thrown Ecogear SX heaps and never pulled a fish so tied this one on and said if it doesn't catch a fish then pox to ecogear as they are supposed to be solid lures.......well a fish a cast so happy with the lures. This is the 249 and it throws some flash, and fished best over the gravel/black mud sandy shallow ground.
Went for a quick session up the Frankland and as good as Zap was on the lecci he couldn't keep up on the fish front yep hooked up again (scorpion yabbie colour) and Zap giving me the dirties...ha ha
So after a killer morning session with easliy 80 fish between us it was stumps for lunch. We decided to hit Deep creek in the arvo and enjoy the day. Some pics to show you the sights.
Saw the biggest bream here and it was great just watching him swim around under the tea tree. Threw a lure in but he just smiled and swam away.
Clear blue sky
Saturday finished with easy 100 fish between us. Went back to the mouth of the Frankland for a quick look at the turn of the tide and there was a school of about 100 big skippy and yeh we caught a couple. Beer o'clock and was beatuiful day on the water.
Sunday was once again glass in the morning. Hit the headlands again and smashed the bream on lures. Zap tied on a Zipbait while I tied on Trout Tune. This is another floating twitchbait and twitch it did and bream threw themselves at it.
This lure worked all day and is now my favourite lure. Yep its expensive and small but nothing like dropping it in front of bream and watching then come out to look and then slam it. Just can't beat the visual action.....
Zap was killing them on the lures as well and once again many fish landed. But happy hour at 7.30am was calling as the bourbon and dry were cold........ha ha
Nothing like breaming with bourbon and dry......
Decided to hit Snake Island and once again it was bream central. We we casting into the shallow rocky flats again and just a quick crank and instant hookup!
However the fish shut down so we tied some SP plastics on and hit the 2-3m line. We were slamming bream on slam 3" SP.
These were all good 28cm fish.
Then moved to the mouth but only herring and a few small pinkies on plastics.
The mouth gets absolutely hammered......
So lunch again and for our final afternoon it was the upper Frankland. I had landed a 34.5cm bream in the lower but the bigger fish were aluding us so we ventured further upstream. We pulled up just downstream of the Nornalup bridge and decided to move up the bank under lecci power casting into the banks. First casts and we were both smashing the bream.......You could see schools of them hanging on the wood.......Was a visual spectacular.
Then the bridge pylons loomed within casting distance. There was just masses of baitfish hanging under the bridge! In went my old faithfull Luckycraft 48DD gold, cast hard up against the pylons...crank, smack and a nice 29cm bream landed. The next five casts landed five 28-29-30cm bream. Zap watched in bewilderment but by the time he cottoned on the fish shut down
Anyways I suggested he tie on a slam SP and drop it deep......and his first cast resulted in him getting bricked......ha ha as I can still see his face...pure pain and tears welling as it was the fish of the trip.....ha ha, got to be quick old man...ha ha. But he landed a few
We caught a few more up river but the light was fading.............
So all up we would have easily landed over 200 fish. Importantly we fished areas no others appeared to fish but we changed lures very regularly and moved when they subsequently shut down. But at the end of the day we just enjoyed ourselves.......if you catch a fish its a bonus.
And yeh Barneyboy if you have read this far there's one more thing. Here's a picture of my ugly mut showing you I'm enjoying myself just to piss you off.

Two Rocks on Saturday
Submitted by wazzbat on Sun, 2010-03-07 19:49Went out from Two Rocks yesterday on a mates boat this time. Finally got onto some OK fish. Poor old Northsea can't buy a fish lately. Don't worry. You'll get one one day! It was the roughest water I have ever travelled back into. It took just over 2 and a half hours to get back in. The boat is a 575 Stacer with a 115 Johno on the back but it wasn't quite used at it's full potential heading home yesterday. It was pretty hairy stuff. Luckily the skipper was switched on. He did a good job getting us back in one piece. Needless to say, we were the only idiots still out there by the time we got in at 4pm.
I pulled up the nice Baldy and the Pinky. I also released two undersized Dhuies. The skipper caught the Dhuie and Big Black Arse.

Swan fish so far so good
Submitted by biggerfish on Sat, 2010-02-20 20:14Kicked off swanfish about 1030 after collecting bait was a bit of a slow start with only one dozen small bream fishing around the ascot area cruised up to east Perth area got three bream biggest around 35cm put it in the live tank to get it weighed for catch and release then decided to head back to ascot fished a few snags pulled on a few smaller bream no upgrades so pulled the anchor and moved to the next snag just in time to beat last years biggest bream winner to his favourite snag. Had a couple of good runs but no hook ups then bang I was on to a decent bream it wrappede round a snag and with a bit of manouvering with the boat pulled in a 39cm bream put it in the live tank with the other and cast out again bang onto another good bream this one came in much easier but measured 41cm. So out with the 35cm and in the tank went the biggerfish. It went quiet after that so fished half hour then decided to weigh the fish in as catch and release. The 41cm went 1.2 kg and the 39cm went 900grm so far they are biggest weighed but still 12 hours to go. Having a bit of a rest now then hitting the whiting spots tonight. Maybe try for bream early morning there's always biggerfish. Will post photos when I get to the computer tomorrow.

First Metro Mulla!
Submitted by chrisp on Sat, 2010-02-20 08:26Hey All,
Have been hitting a north metro beach pretty regularly lately with fellow fishwrecked member Daz, and his bro. Most session's have been productive with solid herring tailor and bronzies keeping us entertained.
We headed down again last night and i finally scored my first mulla. It took a big tailor fillet on snelled 9/0 circle hooks.
Daz's Bro who is still trying to get his first tailor went one better later in the night with a mulla of his own on the mulie.
I has been good to find some quality land based fish in the metro area.
Cheers

Popped my Cherry
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Mon, 2010-02-15 12:53
So we were booked for a charter on Absolute Ocean Charters for friday, but the Weather was crap, so we rescheduled for Sunday. Had an awesome day with Mik and Kelly, with most people landing good fish. Their service, food, gear and attitude were just awesome. Thanks for a great day.
As usual Jane outfished everyone with a bag of: KGW, Blackarse, Fox Fish and Red snapper, along with a few sergent bakers. My dad and Cameron bombed out with a few takes, but no boated fish. My workmate Andrew got a 60cm+ Pink Snapper and a double header of one undersize and one nice dhuie, his mate Bernie got a nice Gummy Shark, and Andrews housemate Sanae got a fox fish and a blackarse before succumbing to seasickness.
I did ok with a fox fish to start the day, and then the Dhuie. The Dhuie was the first fish of the day to take drag and probably took 5-10 mins taking it easy bringing him up. As the first Dhuie I have caught I did want to take it home, and it looked a bit under the weather from Barotrauma.
Weight : unknown because the scales maxed out at 20kg
Length: 120cm plus
Fillets and wings: 10kgs!
Im stoked and my arms and legs are sore:D
P.S Sorry for the photo layout but the multiple image thing kept crashing IE and I could only enter them in the body of the post.

P.B. Yellow-fin whiting
Submitted by Hobie-Wan on Mon, 2010-02-15 10:24I got this on Saturday morning around Mylup. The biggest yellow-fin whiting I have ever seen, let alone caught. It was 34cm, hooked about 1m from my feet! Its nothing special compared to all the Dhuies and Snapper people post on this board, but its a pretty damn good whiting. YF Whiting are known to grow up to 40cm, so I am aiming to get one about that big.
It was a pretty good session, myself and two others got 10 more, about 25cm average, with a nice flathead (~40cm) and some herring thrown in. Made for a spectacular lunch.

Local beach sat night.
Submitted by cudbfishn on Sun, 2010-02-14 10:34After trying white hill before new years and coming home empty handed, Noahs_ark, myself and my uncle made a last minuite decision to head down to our local beach to try for some tailor. Well within fifteen minuitus of us fishing I hooked up to our first fish of the night. At 30.0001 cm I thought, well I think I will keep this 1 as you never know our luck. Next cast was quite. Real quiet. Remembering our last trip to white hills i was getting anxious.
But then i got a ripper bite and wound in a good tailor of about 35cm. "well this is more like it".
Then the bite started. We were getting smashed within seconds every cast. Some good fish were reeled in. Biggest tipped 45cm. The best tailor bite ive had in a metro area in a long time.
After my uncle pinged off his second rig we made the executive decision to call it quits. Just after dark and we had only been fishing for an hour.
We ended up keeping 15 tailor and 1 herring between the 3 of us and released several just sized fish.
Great fun. cant wait for my next arvo off. Whenever that will be......

First photo (sorry about the blood :S) was one of three fish i caught last week, measuring about 55-60cm. 2nd photo was one i caught in september on a rapala x-rap. soft plastics and poppers have been doing most of the damage. hope a few of you guys are getting into em :)

A Day on The Blue
Submitted by Toothfish on Wed, 2010-02-10 13:12“Mate do ya reckon we should put the clears up today”. “Aagh yer we may need them”.
Poked the Commodore 6.7mt out of the heads at Dawseville and the Seabreeze forecast definitely didn’t match what we saw but hey it was a long drive from Bunno and we weren’t turning back. My mate goes. “Maybe we should just fish the FFB”. “What and catch nothing as usual don’t be a woos!” Dawesville is a better option for us rather than Bunno cos I think it’s better to punch into it on the way out rather than when the Doctor turns it on in the arvo when you are heading home.
I have been appointed skipper again as I think my mate appreciates that it is brine running through my veins rather than blood. Anyway I don’t need one of those girly swat anti sea sick wrist band things and a gob full of travel calm pills. HA HA. It has been really slim pickings for eons fish wise. I thought the FFB was fertile ground but as it turns out all we’ve been doing is heavily supporting the bait industry for a couple of years and the buggers don’t even send us a Christmas card.
It all changed one fateful day when I did a huge favour for a workmate and then he repaid me. He got a map of the world and pointed and said “You need to fish there”. What near that island? “Yep”. Jeez mate that’s a bit further than the Five Fathom Bank. Are you sure that’s how you spell it?”Yep”. Shouldn’t that say Rottnest or Garden or Penguin Island? “Nup”. So here we are heading off to what seems half way to Mauritius to catch us a Dhuie or maybe our boat limit of two. Twenty knots. bang pound, eighteen knots bang pound, fifteen knots bang pound. Maaate what’s that rattling sound is it the aluminium pole on the landing net? Nah that’s me bones. Thirteen knots and still on the plane the winds picking up and there are some really dark clouds where we are headed. We back off to eight knots as we get closer, tweak the sounder a bit and hey presto we are here. Slip her into neutral and all of a sudden we take a small wave over the bow, she runs up the windscreen and under the hood to give both of us a face full of water. Yep we are here this is the spot. LOL
Out goes the drogue to slow the drift down from 1.8 kn to a more respectable 1 kn. Some nice looking fit for human consumption Californian squid goes on the hooks (I told ya WA bait suppliers shoulda sent me a Xmas card) Then I ask me mate the time to compare it with the predicted time from the “Anglers All Maniacs” cos today is supposed to be a “good” day. We are half an hour early so things are looking promising. I know the little yellow book is not for everyone but it seems to work for me. A few minutes later the wind drops the sky clears the sounder lights up and I’m calling that “its gunna happen right now”, when my mate calls that he’s on. It looks more promising than the Gurnard and Sergeant Baker we just released but I still have to give my two bobs worth. “I reckon that’s a blowie you’ve got on there cos ya rods not even got a bend in it”. “What are ya puffing for?” “Get the net, get the net” he’s going. I already had the net and said “Gees mate ya getting excited what are ya gunna do if ya catch a real fish?” We can see colour and it is really quite white for a Dhuie. “Swim it into the net” I said and brought it into the boat.
Now I’m on, so I drop the net and leave me mate to sort out the tangle I’ve just created for him. LOL. This fish looks to be on the bigger size because it’s giving the 6ft Penn Senator a bit of a bend and its starting to take a little bit of braid off the Okuma Titus. It’s not long before I can see that beautiful whitish grey colour of a much better looking Dhuie. “Gee mate haven’t you got that fish out of the net yet, I’ve got a decent fish here so ya betta get a move on”. He gets the net over the side just in time to land not a big but a reasonable size fish for me. I said mate ya betta chuck yours back cos we’ve already got enough bait. He scowls and says f#@%#@. “How big is it anyway”. It goes a tad under 51 cm and then we make the bravest fishing decision ever. Do we throw our first legal size Dhufish back so that we can fish on. Of course we do.
I’m using some snelled 2/0 suicide hooks as I’m hoping to get some KG’s as a by catch, my mate is using some large circle hooks. After moving back to the X spot we start our drift again. It’s not long and my mate yells he’s on again. Crikey this looks substantially better because his 5ft Senator has got a serious bend in it and he’s onto a beauty so I offer him some encouragement. “Maate, are you snagged on the bottom again? Why are your cheeks all red and why are you puffing so much? Do you think you’ll have him landed before dinner time?” With that he started getting serious and really got the rod working so I told him to slow down in case he pulled the hooks if it was only lightly hooked in the mouth. I asked him if he wanted the net and he got his own back when he said “Nah ya better find a harpoon mate” A few more minutes and he had a beautiful Dhuie alongside, into the net and on the deck. All 15 kg of it. Whoo hoo, high fives back slapping and grins from ear to ear. It went over 1 mt on the measuring stick We think it was good Karma to release that small but legal Dhuie and it was repaid in spades. We had Fishing for the Future in mind when it went back because there was no guarantee that we would catch another one.
We certainly were thankful to have a following sea on the way home and not hang on with white knuckles while getting pounded. The last couple of trips out wide have done wonders for our male egos as hunters and fishos because prior to that when fishing the FFB we mention to the wives that we are going fishing and they would say “OK I’ll get some steak out of the freezer for tonight’s dinner”. The Anglers Almanac was wrong, it wasn’t a good day it was a “Great Day”. Thanks for reading Toothfish
