Wahpole Magic 2nd day

Day 2

Worked the Franklin river on our second day for a very relaxing and rewarding experience. The still waters and and good fishing were therapy. The Lures were slow to produce fish but when they did it was quaility. Blacks were steady thoughout the day, we found king george and a good afternoon skippy session.

The fish of the day was 41cm Black

Great first time wahpole inlet/ franklin river trip

Wahpole Magic

To celebrate a friends end of uni exams, I was invited down south on a two day beach and estuary fishing trip. As always local knowledge is priceless and after an oath of silence and list of concequences I agreed on the terms and was guided to a friends secret stretch of beach on the wahpole coastline. Thirty minutes by 4wd on a challenging sandy track and then a steep fifty degree thick chest high scrub, rocky cliff decent walk we arrived on the beach. With a solid 2 meter heavy beach break and strong beach current i was unsure of our success but sure enough imediately the fish were on.

Using a range of rigs from an unweighted mulie or strip baits to spoon sinker beach rigs fish would fire in a gutter then go quiet. This would mean moving 25 to 50 meters and you would find them again.

Loads of XL Tommy rough, Tarwhine we on all day ranging from 27 to 35 cms, Great skippy of all sizes up 1.5 kgs & plenty of those! The occasional salmon with a late afternoon hot bite, but all runts up to 2kg. Dropped a 5kg plus salmon in the beach break. Talior, flathead and a solid blue eyed blackfish(black Johnson)

The treck out was hard goin but very worthwhile

Great session all round!

When it all comes together, awesome two days!

** Well the last few days have been awesome. The weather in particular has been favourable for offshore fishing so the squiding plans got put back this time.

Scott (Soupster) is a good mate and has been spending alot of time away with the (RAN) Navy and time off limited. He's currently back in town and wanted some descent fish and said we've gotta catch up Ryan. Any excuse will do me to get out on the water week in/week out and that we did on Sunday.

Genltemans start as per usual and Scotty wanted a descent Dhufish as his PB was 11kg with me last year and he's been itching to better it. Me, i wanted to go to deepwater personally but as you do as a skipper & mate you negotiate. I said to Soupy well fish the 40-50m mark for Dhu's etc and if we do well then we'll shoot out deeper.

We ended up fishing a few spot i marked along time ago whilst doing recon but never made it back there. After a few drifts Scotty was on, his driftbait outfit was starting to load up. I said i think your on by the rod load, he said i cant feel the big hit. I said just strike to see....that he did a nothing...mmhhhh. I said i'm supprised as that looked like a good Dhu having a go/sucking the bait. After he free spooled it back down to the bottom again  WHAMO....he was on. The fight was awesome and on the right/light gear. This fish performed well and I said to Scott me thinks you got a descent Dhu and after a good battle surfaces a big new PB Dhu for the Soupster.

Scott was a very happy angler and after a few pics we did another drift with myself getting a good Dhufish (released) and Scotty getting a descent baldy also. That said Scotty said i'm wrapped and got to the deep Ryan as i'm very content. Not bad for only a few drifts but when it all comes together it happens that way (not always unfortunalty)

Scotty's new PB Dhu of 16.5kg (weighed)...happy decky!

After that we hit the deepwater and really any fish is a bonus now. I fished a spot that i took Soupy to a while ago and things were a bit quiet then (happens). I said hopefully my spot fires this time and as soon as Scottys rig hit the bottom he was on. The rod loaded up big time and i got a big smile and i must admit Scotty was on fire (decky day LOL)

After a big battle and Scotts arms feeling the pain on the long manual wind up the fish neared. I said i reckon a bass Gouper as its going hard and maybe a double headed. After a few more minutes the fish surfaced and Scotty got another PB with a big bass Grouper and a descent Blue- Eye Trevalla. Scotty was overwhelmed but such a day when everything he did was gold and i was a  proud skipper. I dropped down after the pics were taken & got by limit of Hapuka with my biggest going 14.5kg (weighed)

Scotty's first/PB Bass Grouper of 19.5kg and Blue-Eye Trevalla 13kg - Double header (weighed)

We header in after that and wow what a day, Scotty in particular was on fire.....awesome day out mate...congrats!~

**  With a good day had on Sunday I thought i cant waste the Mondays fine condition so bugger it i'm going back out. This time i took out Carl (FW Zen) and i said we'll give the offshore squiding a quick go then straight out to deepwater. The squiding was a bit quiet at this new spots so off we went back to deepwater.

I did a few drifts and no action unlike the day before. Mmhhhh.....okay i'll drive around until i find these deepwater fish as they do move around. With a bit of driving around i found them again and dropped. My baits hit the bottom and i'm on, i thought i'd leave the baits down after hooking up to see if i can get a double header. After my rod loaded even more i started the fight. After a good tussle up came a Hapuka & Blue-Eye Trevalla (Double header)

Skippers Double!

Carls turn now, he dropped his baits as i re-drifted the same spot. Straigh away he was on, the rod loaded up bigtime. I said is it fighting but swiming up also he said "yep" i said you may have a big Blue-Eye.......time will tell. After a long fight and the fish not giving up it surfaced. Carl ended up with a First & PB Blue-Eye Trevalla!

Carls First & PB Blue-Eye Trevalla of 16kg (weighed)

Well that was it, a long way out for a few drifts but well worth it. Had a quick drop on one of my Ruby spots but no go so off we went and the ride in was pleasent as we did 30knots in all the way!

**** Certainly was a great two days and the weather gods on our side. Seeing mates get onto some quality fish is always a buzz for me and well done Scott & Carl...........some great captures fella's!~

Dad's PB Swan river prawn 108g

A couple of weeks ago dad caught his personel best prawn in about 5m of water whilst night diving. The prawn weighed 108g. both of us have dived the swan for years and have never come across one this big, underwater it must have looked like a cray :p

Quick arvo fish after work

Caught this the other arvo after work. It went 8.6kg or about 17 pound. Absolutely stoked!!!! My best red yet.

Its Tinny BIllfish Time!

headed out the west side yesterday morning by myself in my tinny. headed straight out to the 100m mark and trolled some skirts around. after a few pest tuna getting the heart pumping for no reason, i saw some birds working in the distance as a come close one skirt got smashed. A nice dolly launched into the air in an absolutly awsome display. i managed to get in the boat with my leader cutting into my hand as it went for a run as i went to tail grab it. next 30 mins i managed 3 dollies in that area, another first for me which was awsome. all where released. after resesting my two rods and teaser i kept trolling and the wind started to pick up so i started to head a little closer to the beack of the reef. as i come into the 85m mark i thought i niticed a bill in my spread but i thought i was seeing things. 30 seconds later my tld exploded into life and as i looked behind there was a small marlin tail dancing its way away from the boat. with a few interesting minutes of fighting the marlin, clearing the other rod, teaser and trying to keep the tinny stable in the chop. 30 minutes later and alot of tail dancing a jumps i had my first marlin to the boat. during the fight i tried to take a photo of it tail walking and had slipd over and belted my camera which now wouldnt turn on. so after unhooking it a towed it for a while until it was able to swim of fine.
after being very content and over the moon. i reset the spread and started heading back to the ramp. as i entered the 65m mark my skirted gar and my tld 15 got hit by something, as i turned around the skirt took of agian but got dropped thats when  i notice another bill chassing behind the skirt belting it all over the place but not hooking up. i flicked the reel into free spool and the line went from a slow hum into a scream. i pushed the lever to strick and got a solid hook up. that second a sailfish left the water and tail walked for ever. as i cleared the other rod and teaser i was already running out of line fast so i started the engin and chased it. over the next 45 mins i strugled to get in control. the camera decided to start working agian so while fighting the fish driving the boat i managed to try get some snaps of the saily in action. finally i got it boat side for a few more pics and i saw a boat  not fare away. so while i was swimming it back to life drove over there and got them to take a few pics which im waiting to be emailed to me. so in one day i managed to add 3 new fish to my list best days fishing iv ever had!
heres the pics i got

snapper sambo's and BIG snook

Took the tinny out for a bash yesterday morning and as we approached the marina, we were greeted by a nice electrical storm. Bearing this in mind we decided to stay a bit closer just incase anything flared up. Anyway hit up a spot well inside the three mile and started the berley.... soon enough the sambo's found our trail with us landing 12 or so in the 3-5kg range (all bar one released), then the pinkies came on the bite with a couple just under 45cms (released obviously) then kept a couple of the slightly bigger ones in the 50cm range. Also managed to land a massive snook which measured 80+cm and was fat as. Didnt get to weigh it unfortunately but was approx 3-4kg. Not sure how common they are at that size, I've caught plenty of snook in dunsborough while trolling for salmon before but they were only 50-60cm never seen one this big before??

filleted all three species and wacked them on the bbq and they all tasted very good, The sambo had a nice white firm flesh suprisingly

anyway here are some dodgy phone pics, sorry bout quality

Good day on the water another Baldie and a huuuge Cuttlefish !

Hit Hepburn Ave at 0630, and as we were heading west...there was lightning going off everywhere. Got to the ramp at 0700, and there was only 20 trailers already in the carpark and all the launch ramps were free...got to love that!

Headed straight out west of Hillarys, and our first spot to visit was were Claire got her Baldie 2 weeks ago about 10 mile out. After a couple of drifts with only 2 undersize Dhuis and 2 undersize pink snapper..i was starting to think, maybe its time to move on. When all of a sudden Claires rod bent over and after a good fight, another good baldchin was floating on the surface. She was very happy and after a quick high five it was game on again.

Another drift and im kicking back feeling my line bouncing over the bottom ..bump..bump bang i was on! My rod was bent over bigtime, and im thinking here comes my first pink snapper on my boat. But once my catch had got to the surface it was a huge cuttle fish...that had been hooked on my snelled rig with a fillet of whiting on it. It sure did put up a good fight.

After a few pics and the esky getting full, we thought we would try out some new ground. We spotted some craypots about 8 mile out and decided to drift past them a few times only to find plague proportions of undersize snapper and skippy around the 40cm mark.

We then headed in close for some squid, but again nothing seemed to be on the bite..for the last 3 trips no squid...where are they all??

Anyway we had another great day on the water, fresh fish for tea tommorow night.....life is hard aye!

OZ trip so far

I thought i would post some pics to show a snap shot of the month and a half of fishing on the way up to exxy.

Our set up

Kalbarri tuna we had a absolute ball chassing them when the weather permited.

Cape peron

Coral Bay

Dad's first marlin

With Dad here on holidays I took him out today for his first try at gamefishing. The water was looking a while lot nicer than earlier in the week and after an hours trolling we hooked up on the short corner. It decided to jump across the rest of the spread so a bit of mad untangling was required but after 15 minutes I billed a 25-30kg black. A quick snap and the fish was off.

The rest of the day consisted of a 8-10kg Yellowfin Tuna (released), a 2m hammerhead hanging around, a small whale shark coming by for a look and a pack of good spaniards chasing and souveniring my popper in 3m of water well inside the reef while chasing spanglies for tea!

Hopefully there's a few more stories soon with the weather forcast looking how it is for the next few days.

Steep Point

Hvaen't been on the site in quite a while but was talking to a friend the other day and told him that I had been up to Steep Point for a few days and he said to put a few pics up. Was a good few days with a few Macks caught on the Troll. It was my 8th time up there and it is such a great spot just to hang out and a bonus to get amongst some good fisheing. Track was shocking going in but it all pays off when you come over the hill and look across the bay! We got some good tailor from across the island and some good pinkies in the bay. Looking forward to getting back up there soon!

LB snapper

After battling the strong winds yesterday and watching a mate land a 5.5 kilo snapper and loose a bigger one at the gaff with a little help from the gaff man (me) and I didn't even get a run I decided to head down this morning. Well we didnt have to battle the winds but with not many clouds in the sky it was a bloody freezing morning. Our lines were in the water by 6:00 and within half an hour we had our first run (my rod this time) the rod went from straight to a 90degree angle in half a second . I'd just removed it from the rod holder and then SNAP a few nasty words later and I was tieing on a new rig.  One positive for me after loosing a good fish is that you know that the weak spots or chaffed line is now gone. I Baited it up cast it out and put it in the rod holder. Before I could get tension on the line I could feel a knocking on the rod grabed it out the rod holder just as the rod fully loaded up well I wasnt going to loose this one weak  spots were gone and this fish was mine. A short fight ( you have 2 show the snapper off the rocks whos boss, if you let them take line they will run you straight under the rocks) and a nice 4-5kg snapper was splashing in the shallows. We sat there for another hour and a half without another touch home by 9 and tucking into some fresh snapper. All in all for the first winter blow we did allright. Nothing like the feeling of playing tug of war with a decent snapper off the rocks. Bring on the winter storms.

North mole 2 morrow

yeah we deffiently going 2 morrow. we will be at the disabled boat ramp and trying to get some squid and herring while having 2 or 3 rods out for snapper. hopefully we get some. any one wanna join ur free to come. ust dont catch our big ones :P

sundays trip to the lake

alright one and all

Just a quick report on sundays trip to a local pond called peggys pond.  I was fishing for tench and bream, although I didnt get any tench I did end up with 7 bream.  They were caught on either the float with loose feed fired over the top with a catapult, or on the feeder where  a small plastic cage is filled with groundbait which attracts fish to the area.  The baits they were caught on were sweetcorn and troutpellets.  I lost one as well and I reckon I would have had a least 3 more if it hadnt lashed down with rain for half the morning!

All the fish ranged between 4.5lb and 6.5lb so a good average size.  Hopefully will go back in a couple of weeks when the suns out!!!

Black Death

Nice little Coronation on one of Big John's home made lead heads. "Black Death" was christened with this fish and then smashed on the next drop by something huge. The lure now lives 100 nauticle miles out from Onslow.
Thanks for the memories.....
Rosco

Exmouth - terrorist style

A reasonable bag of fish for an Exmouth virgin. Pity the weather didn't play ball in week 2.

* rankin and gold spot was a double header *

* my first marlin - not a record breaker but it performed well, if only we had a dedicated videographer on board *

Double Hookup Double Header

First drop on a new spot, Amanda got a double header of Rankins, I got a Saddle Tail and a Rankin.

Beach Bashing For Spaniards

An alarm going off at 2am is never anyones favourite thing. Especially if its cold and you have to go to work. But , its suprisingly easy when you have been waiting for this fishing trip to come round and its finally here. I sprang out of bed and had a travel mug ready to go in no time , a quick run thru that i had everything , check the weather and i was off to mick's house. Our destination Wagoe and our target Narrow Barred Spanish Mackerel off the beach! 5mins down the road and id realised id left my sunnies at home. I would later pay for that but never mind too late to turn back. Jumping out and throwing all the gear into micks Navara including rodholders, ice, bait ect and a quick stop to pick up ty we headed to the servo for some tucker and fluid we hit the road for the 2hr trip trying to beat the sun and the other fishos we knew would be out hunting spannies from wagoe with the good easterlys blowing! The trip passed quickly and quietly albeit cold and we hit the beach ready to roll after a quick deflation of the tyres the fun part was gettin closer! The 4wd passed with a few stops more deflation and some pushing we finally hit our beach feeling on cloud 9 and not a minute too soon for as soon as we commenced rigging up 1 no 2 hang on 5 cars suddenly where headed our way. (not many clearings for easy fishing along this stretch) They soon turned back to find other options and with the breeze at our backs and the sun just sending a glow over the water we set our first baits out. Gee they look awesome and its no wonder the macks love them skipping and hopping from wave to wave and it definently proved the point less than 2mins into the sesh when i thought i saw a sizeable splash under micks bait and this ratchet suddenly came to life! Already!!! alas somehow it missed the hook points and mick managed to retreive just the head of his pike bait.Tyron soon hooked up aswell and again it missed the hooks.. I was beginning to think maybe i should let a line out instead of taking pics when mick hooked up solid on our first fish of the morning. And while that went thru the motions tyron hooked up solidly aswell! a DOUBLE yeeehaaa... Mick knocked his fish up pretty quick on the 24kg LBG gear he was running and we soon had 10kgs of spannie bled and on the sand. Ty's fish turned out to be abit more stubborn and soon after 14kgs of spannie was sequred on the gaff... Crikey photographer and gaff man the boys where asking too much i had to wet a line.. My first attempt was running smoothly and the bait looked happy (if you could say that) about 250m off the beach when ty spotted a splash on the bait. Just as i manned the big penn ready for action a MONSTOROUS splash charged down the gardie and it was gone. my balloon drifted off towards the abrolhos and i was left cursing as we where runnning short on balloons already and i had to wait for the other boys now.... To cut abit of chit chat Mick got his 2nd fish and bag limit about a hr later after a few more misses and i finally had another crack at the razor gang we knew was waiting... We waited for some time our baits working and the sun getting higher. Ty missing 2 more fish and i still sat patiently eyes glued on the skipping splashing bait over 300m out waaaaaaiting for something.. pllllease... Then as soon i left it to get a drink my reel screamed the boys yelled at the big surface strike id just missed! as usual... grabbing my new 24kg LBG stick outta the holder and setting the hooks i was finnnnaally into my first landbased mac! a good 10min fight off the beach and over 400m of line back onto the reel later a beautifully conditioned fish of 16kgs was on the beach! you Fu*king RIPPEEER Another 13.5kg fish soon joined the fray and i had my 2 fish atlast! To cut a long story short we took home our 2 fish each as lettin them go after a long fight off the beach just wont work and fresh spaniard is always nice on the plate and the fish where trunked before being iced down for the trip home. Mick took 6hits to land 2 fish , tyron took 7 hits to land his 2 and i only had the 3hits for my 2 but didnt have anywhere near as much water time as the other boys. With smiles on our faces and sore arms and shoulders we headed back to gero. I know where ill be next time im after a mack and the winds blowing east! Beach Bashing For Big Spaniards

Twin KGs off Ocean Reef

Just got my skippers ticket today. First fishing trip out this afternoon off ocean reef. The fish were on the bite today as in the hour i was out I threw back a decent black a$$ about 40cm and a couple of nice wrasse. But the main prize was this pair, 51 and 53 cm KGs. Hope the good luck continues on my boat as last weekend I caught a 53cm leatherjacket also off mandurah!

mahi mahi caught at work

Home made popper now missing hooks as they broke the wire trace.

My first dolphin fish, not big but hey it still counts, and extra points for catching on a handline i reckon.

So here I am on nightshift up off thailand on the oil rig im on, working down in the hot engine room and decided to zip upstairs to get some fresh air, So here I am upstairs looking out at the ocean and suddenly a massive school of dolphin fish swim past the rig, hundreds if not thousands of them constantly circling the rig.

Shit, I race back down and grab a handline and a home made popper I had made last time out whilst bored on night shift and started hurling and retrieving as fast as i could, within minutes i had my fist hook up, bang got him and reeled him in and procariously up to the deck of the rig, then cast again and onto a beauty, this was a dam good sized fish but within about 20 seconds he had bitten through the wire trace connecting the hooks, i had one hook left so i kept fishing and within a minute or three i was on again, once again breaking the hook off at the trace...

Oh well ones enough for my lunch so i took it up to the cook in the galley who is preparing it for my lunch now as i type!

Check out the popper, a thick broom handle cut down ,ear plugs for eyes and some crazy shitty paint scheme done in cheap shit paint made in asia that was real hard to make look good, goes to show you can catch a fish on a piece of crap lure as long as you present it how the fish need it to get them interested.

Now to make some more shitty lures so im ready next time they swim past..oh and better go do some work too!

Fish ID Please

Hello all,

My wife pulled this out of 15M of water behind Garden Island yesterday. Its back swimming now, but I was wondering if someone may be able to tell me what it was?

Anzac day

Headed out on anzac day with the intention of getting a feed for a long weekend family barbecue and mothers day lunch coming up.Boated my first dhuie a nice 68cm which took the pressure off for sun nights barbecue. My decision then was to find some new ground. For the next couple of hours things went real quiet and not even the pickers were biting.Next was an undersize dhuie which was promptly sent back to the depths using the release weight. Then I picked up another nice 65cm dhuie. It was now brads turn and he didnt read the rule book on not catching a fish bigger than the skipper ha ha catching a healthy 80cm duhie. With the sounder showing plenty more fish one more drift was the call.To top off a perfect day brad pulled up a 54cm dhuie. With the icebox full it was time to head home early.Good to see the fisheries research guys at the ramp again.Dhuie on the barby and beers went down a treat. One of the best fishing days I have ever had and finally some clear dhuie photos for keeps

More Exmouth

few more fish

Hard life in Exmouth

Some of the fish we got over the last few days
