Hey guys Been a fair while off here but Ive got a boating/engine query for those more experienced than I. Ive got a 4.8m glass center console that was new in early 2012. The original run in the river over in SE Queensland was great with good revs and went like a scalded cat. Engine is a 2011 90 etec. Fast forward to now and Ive got some RPM loss in the order of 400-500 rpm. Have been chasing my tail with spark plugs, fuel lines, throttle cable adjustments, carbon cleaning, VST filters etc but wondering just how much RPM I would actually lose with the bottom of the hull being fairly dirty and having a few scratches and such on it. The wobble rollers have a heap of road grime on them and thats now on the hull. A couple of gelcoat chips and a few scratches as well. A Lowrance side scan transducer, and TM150 transducer hang off the back also. Ive heard over time that gelcoat becomes porous and will hold water? It probably does need a clean, sand and wax and some new rollers to stop the dirt going straight back onto it. In saying all this, the motor sat for a long time during the arrival of a young family and has less than 300 hours on it. Quite possibly it has gummed up/carboned up from little use and not much time spent having it running at WOT. Have been onto a few mechanics in perth and back locally and not many can seem to put a finger on anything mechanically wrong. So my question here is can the fouling and increased surface area on the old gelcoat on the hull be causing this sort of thing?

Update- I have wired as per suggested in diagram andhave attached pics i haven’t started the boat yet just turned the gnition on to get power I can only get power to port from port battery and starboard from starboard battery and only get power to both motors if isolator is on 1&2 and both batteries are still on Just to confirm wired like this I should be able to start from either or both batteries ?

Hey guys, cut a bloody wire in my cabin. Traced it back and lols like it connects to the engine and I think it’s the switch panel connection but I can’t work out what it went to. When I re wires the cabin it labeled it as 12v main and I thought it was just tapped off the battery, fmlllll but lucky enough worked out where it’s going and what it’s called but just trying to work out if it’s necessady to have. Attached a a pic of it also and it’s the wire with the screw driver touching it. any help would be great.

Hi, I am trying to locate James Collins who may be able to help me with some info about his grandfather who was a boat builder or any other info about anyone involed with estuary marine when they were building bonito boats. Specifically what may have happened to the moulds. I beleive James grandfather may have built boats in rockingham or James himself is from that area. Any info would be appreciated and if you dont want to post publicly you can pm me. Cheers Wayne.

I was frankly disgusted when retrieving my boat at the Leeuwin boat ramp a couple of days ago to find the taps that allow boat wash down have been shut off. Considering the charges for parking over 4 hours have increased by over 30% over the last year (to $16) - what justification has the council got for these changes? Facilities here are already poor when comparing to other ramp that service the ocean - what do the council do with all the revenue they get from this place? (I know, general revenue but they do need to run this facility). I'm writing to the council, perhaps if they get enough complaints....

Hi guys Although I believe you are supposed to have a licence to operate VHF, I understand that most people dont. The reason I ask ist that the new VHF radios with built in GPS ask for an MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) number to be entered in the unit but this number can only be allocated if you have the licence. So...does this mean you cant use the GPS distress function without the applicable licence and MMSI?

Hi Guys, I want to replace this filter myself, never done one before. Is it as simple as unscrewing old one and screwing in new one? Any tips?

Hi all, just wanting to know if anyone has a 4stoke engine and has experienced prop chatter?(engine hours 38 and 19 months old, with standard alloy prop)
i was flushing my engine, and decided to just put it gear still on 700 rpm and i could hear a rattling noise coming from lower leg area near prop.so increased rev to 800-900 rpm and the noise disapeared!.so i went down to my dealer showed them the video and straight away they said most likey prop chatter.they said take the prop off and run it. if you hear NO noise then it is definitely prop chatter.so i did this and they were right, prop off running NO noise.so last time i took the boat out i don't remember hearing anything like this with engine in water.on Monday i will contact dealer and let them know the out come,so i guess the question to them will be-Will prop chatter cause any damage to my gearbox?
any feed back or experiences most welcome
cheers
kuz

Has anyone had any experience dealing with Midaway Marine, good or bad, looking at maybe setting up a heavy duty 5M CC plate ally for trips up north, beach launching ect. and Fish Hunter and Sea Jay seem worth a look, has anyone ridden in either of these or had any experience.
Cheers.

Chasing someone to recover a couple seats on the boat, preferrably in the morley / malaga way, wondering if anyone has any recommendations of people they have used? Hoping to get a couple seats recovered this week. Cheers Bodie

I’ve decided that I’m getting too old to hand winch a boat up onto the trailer. Well to be more accurate my various crew members are complaining that their getting too old (hey - it’s not the Skippers job is it? ). I’m usually a person that says you get what you pay for. So I was looking at these USA made winches that have been around forever… www.whitworths.com.au/electric-trailer-powerwinch-912 - and it’s even on special at the moment (cheaper than the next smallest one) But you can buy 3 of these ( www.whitworths.com.au/electric-trailer-winch-3500) for the price of the USA version. I really don’t use the boat all that often but with other ‘marine’ equipment, life is more about time elapsed than amount of use. It would be nice to get something that may last me say up to 20 years. Also the problem is that ‘cheap’ stuff will often fail when you need it most. I don’t want to be a couple of thousand kilometres away from home/repair for a couple of weeks only to have my winch fail at the start of the trip. I’m guessing that using any of these winches in manual mode is only for emergencies – you wouldn’t want to do it every day for a couple of weeks. Note that I only want a winch that has a ‘free wheel’ out mode. It seems that some have to be ‘powered’ out. Can I have the benefit of anyone’s experience with the use/longevity of any electric winches in the approximate size shown above please…. CheersGilbo Cheers Gilbo

Hi everyone,
For the past year I have towed the RIB on bridle with the motor down. Recently a friend with a brand new Mercury motor has had warranty made void because of towing with the motor down causing the motor to hydraulic by forcing water back up through the exhaust. Can anyone advise if this is possible with the DF115 and should I be towing with the motor up? I was always told to keep it down for stability and tracking purposes. I usually tow the RIB at around 16 knots. I appreciate your advice. Thanks

So i just got the boat back from having thermostats and a turbo hose replaced. First trip out sitting on 4000rpm for about 3 minutes and the motor revs out and have lost foward and reverse. Stopped the boat restarted and no foward or reverse. Motor is a 2006 l4 175hp verado with 600 hours. Bought the boat late last year and have not had much luck with overheating and now this. Any one had this before. I pulled the prop off and started motor, put in gear and can turn the prop shaft by hand. Is there anything else i can check. Googled but nothing i can find. Cheers
