2009 DF140 Blinking oil light won't reset

The oil light for my 2009 Suzuki DF140 start to flash the other day to alert me that it was due for the 500hr service. After I done the service I went through the motions of reseting the flashing light using the killswitch but the light wouldnt reset. After I having a few goes at it I realised that the killswitch wasn't working so Im assuming that this is why the light won't reset. Activating the killswitch doesn't shut down the motor and the motor still starts with the kill switch activated.

I opened up the control box to check the connections to the killswitch and they are all fine. There's a black earth wire and a green ignition wire running to the switch, grounding the ignitiom should stop the motor. I tested the black earth wire to make sure it has a good connection to ground and its fine. I also ran a wire from the netagive terminal of the battery to the green ignition wire to bypass the killswitch and ground the ignition that way just to test it, doing this didn't shutdown the motor and the motor still starts. Has anyone on here had this issue before? Its seems wierd but no doubt im missing something fairly obvious. Ill talk to the suzuki dealer on Monday but id thought id ask the question on here aswell because it is driving me crazy.

Swiftcraft dominator reviews for fishing/diving - OR pacemaker/haines? HELP :)

Hey guys im currently looking at this boat with a 140 4 stroke on the back. its the 88/89 model i believe with the inbuilt fuel tank and also kill tank at the back. Im wanting to know peoples thoughts on these boats. Iv been loving my 16ft baron but its super tippy when im trying to line fish. Very good as a dive boat though. Im looking to upgrade to a 18/19ft boat as im 6'4 and 110 kgs. would also love to go out fishing with 3 or dive with 4 people.

Can anyone give me some feedback on these dominators? i have heard they ride well but the back end looks flat and im worried its not going to be the best riding boat in our Perth conditions.

Are they really THAT bad or are they are pretty wicked all round boat?

The hulls in original condition but the bloke reckons its rock solid and you could jump up and down on the deck and it wouldnt move.

Would love some feedback!

Budgets about 20-25k so also looking at other options with 4 strokes.

Cheers!

Inspection Port - bug infestation

 Hi,

New to the forum and looking for a little guidance please.  Circa 35 year old Vickers Mustang fibreglass boat.  I realised a little too late that all the bugs around the back of where the boat is stored had decided to make a huge nest in rear hull section via the middle bung hole.  This one goes into a section under the floor below the fuel tank.  I've scraped as much crap out as I can via the bung hole but I know there's plenty more. Its not just dirt that I can flush out.....its full of sticky filth with eggs etc.

Thinking of intsalling an inspection port under where the fuel tank sits to ensure I can get all of it out. See photo's. I can feel on that section of the floor that there is a large area without any other supporting timber underneath so suspect it will be a pretty simple job. Floor section is in good solid shape. Just wanted to make sure I am not making a mistake taking this course of action. Any suggestions please?

Thanks

Converting Trailer from skid to roller

Things to do during the ban...

Seems as well I havnt been getting out in the boat lately I decided to convert my skid trailer for my 5m Quiny to a roller trailer. Main reason why I wanted to do this is because I beach launch a lot it would be way easier if it was a roller set up. I had been looking around for a new trailer for a while but didn’t wanna spend $2k haha

Cant believe how easy it was to be honest, hardest part was setting the rollers up correctly one the boat was put back on, but with a jack at the rear and spirit level it all worked out good.

Anyone who is thinking about doing it, I’d recommend it as it isn’t hard at all. About a days work and she’s like brand new!!

$400 for the rollers and mounts is way better than a new trailer.

Screw hole repairs in transom

Hi fellas, looking a bit of info and guidance as to what is the best way to repair screw holes in the transom of my boat? Also does anyone know where I could get a thick piece of plastic or something that I can sikaflex over the top so I don't need to put any more holes in my boat for transducer adjustments? Cheers in advance

Radio Coverage for up to 100km off Perth Waters

 Hi guys,

I recently found out that a VHF radio at best might have communication with Sea Rescue up to 15km out. Is this correct and what radio would work for say up to 100km if you needed assistance??

Is UHF any better??

Mercury/Mariner Engine Lifting Eye

G'day all,

Hoping someone might have a Merc Engine lifting eye lying around? Planning to fit the repower engine (150hp Mariner) to my Swiftcraft Dominator project in coming days and get back on the water! Happy to hire or buy, compensation in amber fluid or cash as suits.
Many Thanks, Tim.

Tinnie mod for pot pulling?

Hi guys as we have a 4.2m tinnie and I think having a pot tipper on it would be a bit much as there would not be enough room does anyone have any ideas that they may use to get their pots on the boat ...besides manually....i was thinking maybe a set of rollers on a shaft which then sits on the side ?

Transom worry

 Hi all,

Just a couple of questions regarding my transom.

I have a 5.2 savage escort, think its a 91 model, I was looking at installing a new sounder this afternoon and I took of a piece of plastic chopping board I was using as a transom saver, I put that on nearly 4 years ago now, I sealed all the screw holes with sikaflex, I also sikaflexed the whole back of the board and sealed the edges once I wasfinished. Today as I undid the screws I noticed a bit of water coming frombehind the board as I was loosening the screws off. Once the board wasremoved the holes appeared to be a little wet, so I got my drill and drilled into them a bit and I wasn't brinig out any board whatsoever, but to be honest I cannot remember if I did now the very first time either though, but what was coming out was like the fiberglass was like a wet paste. I only drilled within the hole itself, I never tried to re-drill thehole bigger, just put the drill bit in approx the same size as the whole.

I think I have had some water seep in, and I'm not real sure how bad the damage would be, and not sure on exactly how to tell either.

My question is from the pics, the area circled, because of the shape, would it be wood within that area or only fiberglass based on the shape? The actual part that the outboard is bolted to feels sturdy enough from what I can tell, I have also tapped around it and from what I can tell it sound the same and not hollow.

If however I have a problem with this area, how hard is it to repair a transom based on the shape of it? Of all the pics I could find of re-paired transoms I have not seen one like this shape, so I'm scared that it cannot be done and the transom shape would have to change?

Any advice and pointers much, much appreciated.

Thanks

Geoff

Repainting outboard cowl - what paint to use

Hi crew
doing a pre-season spruce up to the CC and after glassing up (from the inside) a few major cracks in them am looking to respray my upper and lower cowls on the donk.
I have bought a new sticker set ex EBAY USA and was looking at what I could use to respray the cowls with - would Dupli-colour (Ex repco etc) or automotive acrylic spray cans last?
I don't want to invest a fortune in it but I also don't want it looking faded and chalky after one summer in the sun.
Paint in the pic below looks ok - but that's only because its wet after being rubbed back!

Any painting ideas welcome - (had considered painting the cowls matt black to avoid the fade but apparently matt still fades and becomes patchy!)

cheers
ps - not a great shot but thanks again to SEAKEM from knocking up a new Ali frame for my Baitboard :-)

Finished the boat fridge

Any of you that followed my new boat outfitting thread fishwrecked.com/forum/another-caribbean-reef-runner  here, may have saw that I fitted a stainless seat base frame, with an eye to putting a fridge under it--well, the original idea was an icebox, but it just grew into a fridge, as they do.  Ran out of time to do anything before the big trip, but got into it later, and used it on the Shark Bay 4 day cruise a few weeks ago. Worked a treat--in fact you need to run it at the warmest setting in cool weather. Leave the milk hard against the plate overnight, and it will get slightly slushy, but the alcohol was fine, very cold and frosty . it ended up just over 50 litres capacity. It can be slid out a bit as a third seat, is not in the way when slid right in, and the lid is split so you don't need to slide it out at all for quick access.

Why didn't I just buy one? Well, it would have been cheaper, BUT--

  1. Everything will rust on a car fridge used at deck level on a boat. Nothing can rust on this
  2. Electrics are all at deck level on a car fridge, I raised all mine up into the box section that sits forward, under that ali checker plate,  you can hose around it
  3. No fridge slide nneded, and you can access it without sliding out , due to split lid
  4. Better insulated than any car fridge, seems to come  on about  once an hour for a few minutes, so stuff all draw on the battery, and Andersen plug connection.
  5. I made it with a bung, so it's a hose out to clean.
  6. All components are replaceable. You will get to the stage on a hard-used car fridge where you have to bin it, not this one.

The fibreglassing isn't the prettiest job I've done, as I elected to use an old icebox that had been partly cut up for another project, and grafted a marine ply box on the end for the fridge gear--new materials all around would have been tidier, but it does the job.

Marine Trimmer

 Hey folks,

I want to get my two front seats re-upholstered as they’re starting to come apart. Can anyone recommend a good, but affordable marine trimmer who I can drop them off to have done?

If you’re able to post pics of work you’ve had done, thatd be unreal.

Cheers.

Rebuild fiber glass boat why and why not?

 Chasing some opinions

Anyone done it before?

Does it end up costing more than a better second hand boat?

Is worth it?

Will it take 3x as long as I suspect?

What's everyone's thoughts?

Iv got a penguin phantom un registered un everything basically

Keen to build the perfect boat for me and always wanted to do it

But do I know what I'm getting my self into?

have a fairly good skill set and tools to do it.

Hope the photo worked

All opinions appreciated even negative ones!

Old Epirb - what to do

My old Epirp battery date has passed but it still works.

I bought a new one but was thinking of still keeping the old one on the boat. Thus have 2.

Is this OK to do or should I just appropriately dispose it

Refresh Required

Well completed a full rebuild 4 years ago after the rings went.....and again a piston has let go.

Should have the piston and rod out tonight ready for a quick hone and inspection....budget side of it I'm just looking at replacing the one...other cylinders came up 120, 115, 110....Its pre-mix so its always on the rich side, not sure how the exhaust side has blocked up but thinking the heat build-up could have contributed. 1995 Johnson 115HP 2 stroke.

Looking at few weeks for the parts to come...back together for under $300...

Competent Marine Electrician

I have a 7.2m Ali Hardtop with all sorts of intermittent electrical problems.
ie
Navigation lights work sometimes, now not.
Auto bilge pump works. ie when we get water on board it will switch on - but not always off when empty.
Fresh and Salt water deck wash's intermittent work and don't work.
Marine Switch Panel lights - some work when activated, others are lit when on and others lit on when off.
The switches toggle etc - but don't all necessarily activate - ie no power.

Know anyone who is a gun trouble shooter?
Preferably SOR but happy to go wherever.

Thanks

Polycraft - Any Good?

 Hey All,

Probably a bit late for this as i've already paid for and collected the boat but i'd like to hear everyones pro's and cons for Polycraft boats.

The one i bought is a 5.3m Cuddy Cabin (2007) with a 115hp suzuki (450 hours).

What i've heard so far is mostly good, rides like glass but tough(er) than ally. Only negative is they're hard to modify and repair should things go bad.

Let me know what you think good or bad.

Coil Pack? Advice needed

need a bit of advice regarding coil packs in my 70hp Johnson 2 stroke.... here’s the story

headed out last night and at the boat ramp the engine was running real rough and Smokey. As I had just changed the spark plugs I had the old ones with me so swapped them back over, made no difference. Checked the spark by pulling the lead of when running haha. The top one shocked me hard, middle one didn’t shock me at all, bottom one shocked hard again (good way to test I know haha) swapped leads over and made no difference. Mucked around for a bit checking coil wiring and swapping spark plugs again but still no difference. Thought bugger it we will head out slowly as we were just going in the sound for snapper. Less than 5 minutes into it the engine came good and hasn’t missed a beat since

my question is I didn’t think the coil pack would have an intermittent fault, it’s either working or not? Correct me if I’m wrong. I’ve re checked all wiring and terminals again today and all is fine and runs fine on the muffs.

anyone have any ideas or had similar issues?

Cruise Craft Reef Raider 166

Does anyone know if the cruise craft reef raider 166 is any good?

I am looking at one in pretty good condition for its age with a 90hp yamaha 2 stroke on it (2010) 180hrs and im just curious if anyone has any experience with them. I have been told that boats with chines dont handle that well..... if anyone could give me some feedback or personal experiences that would be great.

Trailer Modification

 Hi All,

im looking to change out a few rollers to bunks on my trailer. Actually, i would prefer someone else to do it due being extremely lazy.

Ive seen some recommendations on here some time ago, but cant find them now.

I am North of the river, but appreciate i might have to travel South.

Any recommendations on who can do the work?

Thanks

1995 70HP Johnson Anodes

Hey
Does anyone know of have photos where the anodes are in a 70hp Johnson? I know the ones on the leg and skeg but cant find the ones on the engine. With my 200 yammy on my big boat they are between the spark plugs but I cannot seem to find them on my Johnson and Google isn't much help

Any tips or pics would be helpful

Mobile Marine Mechanics NOR

Been a while since this type of thread was updated.

Whos kicking goals in Mobile Marine Service NOR these days?

(Need a Throttle cable replaced on a Yam F200)

Yamaha F60 Oil Capacity

The Yammy manual says it should take 2.5 litres, and the dipstick oil level should read halfway up the hashed part of the dipstick.

(including new filter)

I only put in 2 litres and its halfway up the dipstick.

Should I be worried, the manual mentions that the sump is tapered smaller at the top, so not to over do the filling.

Sump full of fuel

 Hi all.

The sump in my yammy f50 is full of fuel anyone had this happen before.

Placcy tank is normally left connected and the valve closed when not in use and never had problems before. I'm guessing the tank has pressurised and pushed a heap of fuel through the carbies or maybe the fuel pump diaphragm. Only found out as when the motor was started the motor was running rough and really smoky and then cut out so lifted the cowling and there was fuel everywhere pulled the dip stick out and it came pouring out.

Now to find out how badly damaged the motor is.

Any ideas from anyone.

Cheers

Rod
