Ctek Panel Charger With Dual Batteries
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2017-08-13 10:50I'm tired of climbing into the bilge to connect my charger to my batteries so have bought a panel charger to install in the dash.
I have a BEP VSR connected to an isolator switch (Off, 1, 2, 1&2). Can I connect my panel charger to my isolator switch/VSR so that I can individually charge each battery by flicking the isolator switch to the battery I want charged?
I've tried connecting a charger to my bus in the dash but I don't think it could carry enough current to charge the battery.

Driving lights
Submitted by gruntre69 on Sat, 2017-08-12 12:24I'm setting up my boat for night fishing and have been running a temperary Led light strip under the Targa. It is working well and I'm now running permanant wiring inside the stainless and back to the dash switches. I'm running a spare conductor for future head light/s but not sure how I want to go with head lights.
I'm thinking Led light bar/s up top of the Targa and I'm going to build a custom shade/s from stainless sheetmetal onto the mounts which will be shaped to exactly shade out the bow to stop lighting up the bow and ruining night vision.
I've driven the boat a few times at night and it is a bit daunting with cray pots and steal post sticking out without lights on them. Trying to stick a powerful head torch out the over the windscreen sux!
I'm not sure whether to go for a single light bar with spots and floods or two singles which might be better as they can be tilted slightly outwards possibly giving slightly more side vision.
These are the items I'm looking at and favouring the single at the moment..

Any opinions or pitfalls to watch out for that I have missed?

Storing anchor on bow spirit without anchor winch
Submitted by Francis on Sat, 2017-08-12 10:22Morning !
My reef anchor doesn't fit in the anchor storage compartment at the front of my Swifty. I'm guessing this means the anchor is either to big, or the storage compartment wasn't designed great (its nice and wide wide, but not very deep). I have to keep my plough anchor and reef anchor in the cabin. The plough isnt a big deal as it fit's pretty nicely, but I hate having the reef anchor prongs rolling around on the cabin cushions.
I have a bow spirit and a cleat so I figure it would be best to keep the anchor stored on the bow - that way it is ready for easy deployment. But I can't figure out the best way to secure it.
If I wrap the chain around the cleat it will bang on the fglass and the anchor compartment hatch would need to be open.
I thought about using an eye and hook turnbuckle to secure the anchor to the cleat, but I just worry about it coming loose OR I thought I could just use rope and untie / attach the anchor hain when I wanted to deploy.
Just wanted to see if anyone does this successfully or if I am barking up the wrong tree. Maybe a new, smaller or folding reef anchor would be the best option.
Hope that makes sense. Thanks !

Transducer fairing block and beach mooring
Submitted by bradz on Fri, 2017-08-04 09:29Good morning all.
My project boat (ie very slow rebuild) is moving along and im doing my research on transducers. Based on comments from JohnF Im leaning towards a B744 transducer in a high speed fairing block to give the best reading at speed. This kind of transducer will require me to use bunks on the trailer rather than rollers (just one more thing I need to change). But, Im wondering if by having this type of transducer will mean that I wont be able to tie up to a beach mooring at Rotto for fear of the transducer getting grounded.
Any thoughts?

98 Octane petrol in new Lean Burn 4 strokes for long trips
Submitted by VaSSagO on Wed, 2017-08-02 09:26I was thinking of running BP Ultimate for my next big trips (Montes & Kimberley) to see if the higher octane fuel gives better fuel economy giving me a longer range.
I have a 2015 Suzuki 200hp Lean Burn, which from my understanding has knock sensors allowing the motor to run leaner. I was thinking that these motors will probably adjust better for the higher octane fuel and give better efficiency.
Even say 5% better would be great, would mean 1 or 2 jerry cans less I need to carry for the same range. Financially it wouldn't be worth it but for these trips having a longer range for the same weight/load would be a massive advantage.
A lot of people get an extra 30-50km per tank in their car running BP Ultimate why wouldn't an outboard be the same?
Any experience with this?

Ali plate paint
Submitted by travis89 on Mon, 2017-07-17 07:08Hello
I have started sanding back and filling coroded areas on my boat.
I would like paint the whole boat now. I don't want to spray it as it's not worth the time and effort to do so. I want to do it with a foam roller and a tipping brush. (Good enough for me)
Just want to know if anyone can recommend a paint that will be suitable for this. Cost is not an issue.
Thanks

Leg gear oil change
Submitted by gruntre69 on Fri, 2017-07-14 13:05I've been mucking around trying to make a small oil pump work when changing my leg oil because I didn't have the correct fitting to screw into the drain plug which is 3/8".
I didn't realise that Mercury make a pump kit that screws directly onto the mercury SAE90 32oz bottle and it has the 3/8" fitting and a metric 8mm x 1.25 threaded adapter all include which will fit any outboard.
I bought it at aquasports marine at full retail for $20.... Bargain
If you want one the Mercury Part number is: 91-8M0072135

Convert tiller steer to remote
Submitted by Willlo on Thu, 2017-06-29 09:25Hey Guys after a few opinions . I've just purchased a 3.95 Bermuda flat bottom punt with an 05, 30hp mercury tiller steer. I'm in the process of pimping it out and after a couple of trips have come to the conclusion that tillers suck , mainly cause my back ain't the best anymore. So I've priced the conversion kits etc and all up it's going to cost around $1200, which is up there a bit and i don't think I'd get my money back if i sold it? but hey that's boats. Now I've found a 30hp 2 banger yammie 06 model with all the remote steering attached and can get it and installed for $1600 after trading the merc . What way would you guys go or do you have any other suggestions? Boat will be used predominantly for crabs, netting, breaming and camping trips.

Gelcoat repairs, final finish issue
Submitted by Mooseknuckle on Mon, 2017-06-26 11:45Hi everyone
Hoping someone can help with an issue I have on my fibreglass boat.
Did some small (screwhole) repairs in the transom and everything has gone fine with gelcoat but having trouble with the final finish.
I have wet sanded progressively down to 2000 grit but when polishing the finish looks dull and doesn't match the surrounding (untouched) gloss finish.
Unfortunately hull is black and shows the imperfections really well.
Any ideas?
I am thinking I need more aggressive polish to cut out the dull (sanded) area and then a nice wax to finish but hoping for others ideas.
Thanks in advance

Boat Leaking
Submitted by Josh-759 on Sun, 2017-06-25 16:17Hello All
Got a quick question regarding a leaking 480 quintrex coast runner. It started all of a sudden one day got back to the ramp and around 20liters came out didnt think to much about it untill the next trip out and the same happened.
So i started to try and find the problems ripped up the floor and started filling with water to see if any water was visable on the outside of the hull... Nothing....
Noticed there are some spots where paint has started to bubble and the bungs dont leak.
Its got me stumped. Any suggestions?????
Cheers Josh

How to clean out a sealed bilge?
Submitted by Josh on Sat, 2017-06-24 15:54Hey
So I bought my first fibreglass boat, and it has a bung which appears to be made from brass. The first owner left it in the canals in Mandurah for a couple of years, so I figure it is for more long term in water use than the standard plastic bung.
When I got the boat home I got a spanner out and opened it up, and a bunch of dark old looking water came out. It doesn't smell like fuel, but just looks stagnant.
How do you clean out under the sealed deck when the only inspection port is tiny, and looks at the fuel tank? Is there some kind of detergent to fill up with?
Also is it worthwhile putting anti seize on the bung?
Cheers in advance

Help please

Is there a company that could build something like I described ?
When I'm away for a week or more I just don't have that room I need.
any help appreciated.

Suzuki 4 Stroke 70 problem
Submitted by aussiejoe on Sun, 2017-06-18 08:02I have an intermittent fault on a Suzuki 70 which has done about 150 hours in just over a year. Its been looked at by two marine mechanics after letting me down and today the same issue happened for the third time.
The following scenario is consistent with all three failures:
A longish run (around an hour) out to a fishing spot. Boat anchored and motor turned off for an hour or more. When trying to restart the motor it behaves as thought the shift lever is not in neutral and therefore no power. Repeated jostling of the shift lever does eventually get it the system to know its in neutral and the motor starts BUT soon cuts out as if there is fuel starvation. It will start repeatedly and run for 5 or so seconds before cutting out.
Both mechanics have been sceptical that the shift lever neutral issue is related to the engine stalling but the same thing has happened three times. I have had the boat out a number of times between these failures with no issue at all.
The motor starts and runs without issue from cold the following day.
Any ideas?

Composite bunk material
Submitted by Marineboy on Sat, 2017-06-17 13:31seen some boats with bunks made of a composite material (think it's about 100x50mm or 150x50mm) it avoids the need to cover the bunks with carpet or urethane strips, anyone know where to get this material from in Perth ?
cheers
