*** Furuno FCV 620 & FCV 585 back in stock @ Oceanside Tackle & Marine ***
Submitted by Oceanside Tackle on Fri, 2009-10-16 12:40
The FCV620 is a dual frequency (50 kHz and 200 kHz) Color LCD Sounder featuring Furuno's DSP technology that displays underwater conditions in 8, 16 or 64 colors on a super-bright 5.6" LCD screen.
You’ve probably heard about digital fish finders, but aren’t quite sure what the difference is. The main difference is the filtering capabilities and auto adjustments. Our new FDF (Furuno Digital Filter) technology helps adjust gain, STC “Clutter” and output power, as well as suppress main bang (the echoes just below the transducer.) It also makes the picture clearer and easier to decipher. But even the best digital filter won’t help unless you start with a solid basis, such as Furuno’s renowned fish finder technology.
The FCV620's waterproof construction allows it to be installed on any bridge. Audio and visual alarms alert you whenever preset limits are met for water depth, water temperature and fish echoes. Selectable display modes include High or Low Frequency, Dual Frequency, Zoom, Nav Data, A-Scope, Marker Zoom, Bottom Zoom or Bottom-Lock. Furuno's TLL (Target Lat/Lon) output allows you to interface the FCV620 with your Furuno chart plotter so you can mark any spot you desire and save it as a waypoint, enabling you to return to it whenever you desire.

*The FCV585 was voted 2009 NMEA Best Fish Finder*
The FCV585 is a dual frequency (50 kHz and 200 kHz) Color LCD Sounder featuring Furuno's DSP technology. The FCV585 displays underwater conditions in 8, 16 or 64 colors on a super-bright 8.4" LCD screen.

*** With the Aussie dollar the way it is and better weather upon us, nows the time to get ready if your not equiped with a good sounder which is a must.
*** Oceanside Tackle & Marine has just received new stock and prices are competative with the big local electronic boating retailers. Fishwrecked Members Discounts apply also so let us know your a member.
*** Oceanside Tackle & Marine uses the Furuno sounders and offer something that most shops(and online) dont and thats "Menu setup" and understanding all its features which we go through in "detail". These are good fish catching tools but not understanding its capabilitys will reduce its capacity.

New to fishing.
Submitted by Cave_man on Sat, 2009-07-11 21:41Hey all, I think this is the right place to post this, if not tell me and i will move it.
Well, I have been reading through the website and it seems that you guys know your stuff when it comes catching.....well near enough anything.
I am relatively new to fishing although I used to go with my dad as a kid in the UK, but here in the pilbara is different.
I don't have any sort of gear and I will mainly be fishing from a land based situation as i don't have regular access to a boat, I'm on a fairly tight budget but want to get started as soon as possible, what I need is some reccomendations on kit, areas to fish, bait, and what I can expect to catch.
I know I am completey green to fishing in the pilbara but any help to get me started will be much appriciated.
Thanks in advance

Death of the suburban tackle shop...
Submitted by wrassinator on Sat, 2009-06-27 16:57Bailey's Bait Box in Port Kennedy is closing in 6 weeks...
So Ian is having a clearance sale...not a gimmick, legitimately leaving the industry...so get in quick for a bargain...
Not many heavy rods and reels left, plenty of lighter spin/egi/SP stuff and heaps of terminal tackle cheap cheap...
Cheers,
Ado (not sponsored by Bailey's Bait Box, just supporting a great, local bloke squeezed outta the industry by the "big fellas" over the road..RIP knowlegable local service)

Problem with Saragosas?
Submitted by Jaso on Fri, 2009-04-03 14:38I was shopping around for a Shimano Saragosa in a 4000 size today and I was given a very negative assessment by a tackle shop owner today, who recommended a Stradic in the same size. The advice was that too many Saragosas come back with the back plate coming off, or the gearing shot, and that in general they are not very well made.
I was quite keen on the Saragosa for the higher gear ratio, and that it did have a reasonable drag pressure (10kg). But am wondering now if I should be looking at the Stradic or the Sustain.
Are there known problems?

Tackle advice needed for trip north
Submitted by Jaso on Mon, 2009-03-30 10:12Greetings all. First time post. I'm a Sydneysider, but heading over for a trip in late May. Heading to Port Smith Lagoon for a couple of days, and then up to Cape Leveque for a few days too. Then going on a charter out of Broome for a couple of days too.. going to be awesome
I'm bringing smaller casting gear with me, but I'm trying to work out whether Im going to be ridiculously under-gunned. Any advice would be appreciated.
My standard kit for Sydney pelagics (rat Kingfish / Salmon) is Daiwa Caldia KIX 3000, combined currently with a rod in the 2-4kg class rated for throwing 5-25gr lures. I get smoked on larger kingies, but that usually ends with me losing the lure on structure rather than getting spooled. Let's just say for the amount of fun I have on the lighter gear, I'm prepared to lose the 20% if I'm likely to hold onto the 80% I hook up to.
Intention is that I will fish the estuaries in Port Smith and around Cape Leveque (probably on foot). I will have some time in a boat also, and have larger gear available for trolling.
I will want to cast from the boat at times around the reef structure too, so I'm trying to work out whether the casting gear is too undergunned. Options would be to either:
- upgrade the line class on the Caldia, and get a new rod (if thats likely to get me into the 80% chance)
- If that doesnt make sense, then keep the existing kit I have for SPs in the estuaries, and buy new reel / rod setup in the 20g-45g lure class (which starts to get me into the larger sized poppers). Given I normally work threadline casting gear, I'd rather that type of reel, but would be prepared to go overhead if that made more sense.. and I'd be looking to spend $500-$600.
Any ideas? Many thanks I'm getting pumped..

Lowrance Sounders
Submitted by Blank Cheque on Sun, 2009-03-29 06:31Hi Guys
I have a lawrance LCX 15ci combo unit that i brought new some years back at the boat show. I was once advised by a pro fisher that i would regret my purchase. This was due to the transducer problems. Just last month, I am now on my 3rd transducer the second one only doing two fishing trips and lasting 2 years. This due to working commitments.
This time i phoned Navico for some advice and they were great replacing it. Thanks so much.
Has anyone else had problems or got answers.

Quality whiting rig
Submitted by kane on Wed, 2009-03-11 20:28So as of late I am slowly one rig at a time trying to upgrade my equipment from cheap arse rex hunt style type combos to some good quality higher dollar fishing equipment.
The bigger end of town is easy to navigate through but on the smaller end it is alot more confusing to me.
I am a big fan of daiwa gear, especially the saltigas but they dont make them in a very small outfit for chasing whiting etc from a boat.
Anyone got any recomendations?

stella 10000
Submitted by kane on Mon, 2009-02-23 08:58Hey guys,
So I am in the market for a stella before I head up the coast in April to Coral Bay. I understand that one sponsor on here gets a little upset with this type of thing so any replies might be best by PM and unfortunately I wont be able to post the best deal I could find after the fact but hey thats life it seems.
So, back to whats important - who has recently obtained a stella and where did you get it from?
Any fishing stores able to do a good deal very welcome to respond also.
Best wishes,
Kane

good deal !
Submitted by Feral on Mon, 2009-01-12 20:03went shopping today at ocean 2 outback in busselton as they are closing down :(
went to show my support to the crew seeing as i used to work there and know everyone ... and also managed to score a good deal at the same time :)
they are running 20% off store wide for anyone that is intersted (that includes what high end gear that they have left)
went in there at lunch not looking to buy much but i spied a saltiga z4500 spin reel thats been there for over a year and the price had not been marked up during that time .. got it for $780 .. was bloody stoked with that price for a brand new reel .. couldnt help myself and buy it.
notice they also had what i think are big accurate spin reels that are marked $1299 -- after 20% off thats a bloody good saving .
anyone after a few good rods and reels should give em a ring or drop in .. if they sell most of the stock then they might be able to reopen in a smaller store and just do fishing
to Cathy, Rusty, Greg, lyn and kel sorry to hear about the closure .. hope you rebound at some point better than before.

Banax GT5000, WHAT!!, a line roller bearing!!!!!!!
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Fri, 2008-12-05 18:25I finally found a replacement bearing for the bushed line roller on this reel. It's funny, one of there other reels has a bearing in it's roller exactly the right size!!
As its a well built reel, this boost the number of bearings to 5, and makes it even further bulletproof!!
As i am using this for heavy spin work of the yak, i also got an extra spool, so one has 50Lb braid, and the other 30Lb mono.

Line roller assembly, lots of steel there, NO PLASTIC!!!

Roller, existing bush, replacement bearing.

All assembled.

Is the Saltiga 30t too big and heavy for a Hiramasa 60b?
Submitted by kinga86 on Thu, 2008-10-16 20:54As the title states. Tossing up between the 30 and the 30T. I like the 30T because of the clicker and narrow spool. The 30 is cheaper and smaller in diametre but wider, making it good for casting on my surf rod (I may end up buying a Saltiga surf as well!). It will mainly be used for bottom bouncing, live baits and light jigging 20-50 metres and might see a few sambo jigging trips as well.
Thanks for any opinions :)
P.S. I already own the rod, just trying to find the best Saltiga reel for it!
