Chasebait squid reviews?
Submitted by randall df223 on Thu, 2018-01-18 06:40Anyone used these yet? They look like they will get smashed. Bit pricey and not sure about the durability but i had a $10 voucher which bought them back to a reasonable price.
Hoping to get out and find some snapper on Saturday morning.

Jig sizes....
Submitted by timboon on Mon, 2018-01-15 21:57Crew i'd like to hear a few opinions from those that jig often chasing demersals...
I came to believe from what i'd read here and elsewhere that you should ideally use the lightest jig you can get away with using, after buying lots of light ( 60, 90 and even 120 gram jigs ) I've now come to realise that light is not good for most of the country i fish...
Usually i fish 25 - 50 mtrs and IMO heavier jigs come up trumps....
I'm sure there are acceptions to this but you need ideal drift conditions or a mechanical aid to assist keeping fairly vertical with anything other than heavier jigs....
In shallow country i'll use perhaps 120 grammers ( placcys and jigs ) but in any breeze or depth out come the heavier ones usually 150 gram minimum......
Big baits big fish i use that same principal for jigging and it seems to be working well....
Curious to hear peoples personal opinions and experiences....

jigging rod blank
Submitted by scuttlebutt on Wed, 2017-11-15 04:46Hey folks, I recently busted my T-curve jig rod for the second time. First time was replaced on warranty, this time I high-sticked it but I reckon the blanks are too brittle for this application anyway.
So I'm going to pull the guides off it and make my own.
Looking for suggestions for a 50-80lb jig-rod blank. I've previously used a Calstar Grafighter blank to make a GT rod and that thing is just unbreakable but do they make a blank suitable for jigging? I found some info on the net but that was from 2003 and no doubt improvements have been made since then. Extra points if you've got a decent recipe for a jig rod as well.
cheers,
Steve

Reel handles / knob upgrades?
Submitted by scano on Sun, 2017-09-24 20:14Hi all,
wondering where you suggest I try, for an upgraded power handle, to suit a shimano Talica.
not wanting to spend massive $, as it is more for cosmetics / bling factor than anything, but something with a longer arm to generate more cranking power would be nice.
Have looked at eBay of course, as well as aliexpress.
any suggestions for where some jigging style upgrade handles and knobs could be found, at half reasonable prices, would be greatly appreciated

Opinions please on SP rod
Submitted by Boydy on Sat, 2017-09-16 17:12Hey Crew,
Chasing opinions on a soft plastics spin rod. Will be used in 30m-90m chasing demersals. Rod will be matched to a Twinpower 5000 running PE2.5, jig weights 2oz-4oz. Looking at lengths between 6.0-6.6.
At this stage looking at a budget of around $300-$500.
Appreciate any feedback.
Cheers

Soft Plastic - Setup advice
Submitted by Stockman on Thu, 2017-03-30 10:30
Looking for some setup advice from the Demersal soft plastic enthusiast on this site.
Have been converted to metal jigging over the past couple of seasons and have now started to get good results on most ventures out to sea, normally fishing NOR in the 30 – 50 m depths. Current setup for OH is a Saltiga 15H running pe3 on an old Jigwrex pe4 rod and for spin, a Sustain 5000 on an Azusa pe3-4 rod, both with a couple of meters of 60 lb FC leader. Leaning towards the OH setup for metals.
I want to start having a crack with the soft plastics and take out 2 setups, one for Metals and one for Plackies. From reading as much as I can from this site about the subtle differences in these 2 types of Jigging, would appreciate any feedback as to the suitability of either of the above 2 setups for plastics.
Also have a Saltiga Game 3500 matched with Saltiga 70S which I have used more as a top water casting outfit. Any thoughts on using this for Jigging Plastics?
Will probably head into one of the site sponsors sites and get some in store help ( ie. Spend lots of money ), but would appreciate any feedback on the above as to the suitability of my current gear.
Any other top tip for a plastics newbie, or a must have placky to throw on a jig head to start out with would be great.

Even when the fish didn't bite it!!!! Are they needed to be jigged that slow that they just sit in the water?
Changed to to bait and bagged out in a hour nothing big pinks around 600 dhueys a little bigger

Kato and savage jigs
Submitted by mikegonefishing on Tue, 2016-08-30 14:48I've noticed bcf stocking new range of jigs at a low end price. They've got kato jigs (pirate style but hooks look weak and would need trading out) and savage have squish jigs.
Wondering if anyone's had success on these?

Carbontex Drag Upgrade - A few tips
Submitted by JohnF on Sun, 2016-07-31 21:03Crap weather this weekend, so after doing the 700 hr service on the Verado, I looked at the fishing gear and decided to upgrade my old Ocea Jigger 1500NPPG drag.
The OJ is a cracker little reel, but its Achilles is the drag, which was always very weak and my thumb has the burn marks to prove it.
I used carbontex sheet and cut the washers with scissors and trimmed with a dremmel.
The thin carbontex sheet matched the original thin dartanium drag washers best....the thin carbontex may have been a bees dick thinner than the original washers, but bloody close.
After a thorough clean of the reel internals, the new carbontex drag washers were lightly greased with cals light drag grease and the new drag went in...all good. Then dicked around with the drag clicker (which consists of a little spring and tiny metal rod that sits inside the shaft.....that you need to hold in while screwing down the drag knb without it springing across the shed never to be found again.......)and finally got it together and tested it.........only for it to have less drag than before.....BUGGER!
After spitting the dummy and leaving the shed for a few hours, it finally got the better of me and I went back in a striped it down and checked everything......two things looked like possible issues:
1. The first drag washer needs a large inner hole to clear an inner ridge on the girth gear. If you make it too small, the drag only grabs on the inner bit and gives no drag.....looked close so I dremmeled it out a bit.
2. The next drag washer sits between a plate with tabs.....the thin drag washer lookd like it may result in the tabs bottoming out so I made a new one out of the thicker carbontex sheet you can get.
Back together, this time very quickly (always easier second time!) and hey presto, HEAPS more drag, feels like twice as much as original.
Happy days. Looking forward to testing this sweet little upgraded reel out.

Dhu on jig
Submitted by ranmar850 on Fri, 2016-07-29 10:59Caught another liitle Dhu yesterday on jig. 30 metres , same place as I caught my previous only sucesses. A mate was fishing with bait, he dropped a good fish, so we'll never know. Fish were very slow that day, managed a small sambo in the same place also on jig. Jig was a Haoli king 135g in the Glow stripes. with my own double assists, one with a little lumo squid attached. Gear was a Spheros 5000 with 30lb fins braid , 60lb leader, on a Crostage Majorcraft CRJ-S60/4 PE 1.5-3

Jigs and how to work them....
Submitted by Troyboy on Mon, 2016-07-18 10:55Completely new to jigging and looking for some advice.
Over the last few months I've been collecting a few jigs ranging from 90-150 grams, Just wondering if some of you could share a bit of info on these and what I should be using them for and how to jig them.
The more I read the more complex it seems but from what I can gather the two main styles are slow pitch and conventional jigging (fast vertically) for Pelagics.
Will the Knife jigs still work effectively jigged slowly close to the bottom or would I be wasting time?
I was going to use the right hand side first, Probably the top two if there's some pinkys around and the other Three to have a go at some dhus. The other side for Sambos and rat Kings.
Thanks in advance for any info!

Daiwa LD50
Submitted by bsir on Sat, 2016-03-12 20:27I've managed to get myself a daiwa LD50.
What rod is best for this?
It will be used for jigging from 20-50m (mainly 100 ish gram) and at times will serve as a backup bottom fishing outfit (you know, hooks, sinkers, bait) and maybe even a trolling outfit.
It is spooled with 50lb daiwa boat braid.
Thanks

Jig Assist's advice
Submitted by joycey on Fri, 2016-02-26 17:15Hi,
I tie my own twin hook assists for metro demersal jigging ( 100-150g jigs ) and include a squid skirt. Using YGK 20 and 2'0 Decoy type R hooks.
My problem is that the assist hooks often tangle either just above the jig or on jig itself.
After any tips to prevent this
Cheees for advice.
