SAMBO JIGGING WA! need advice on charters as well as tackle!
Submitted by thedw on Sun, 2013-06-23 09:35 Hi guys! from Singapore here!
might be coming down to awesome WA during the Dec period just b4 X'mas. was thinking of doing some Sambo jigging but i dun want to head out in those mob charters as I well be using relatively light tackle! Anyone can give me info on a small charter boat? heard of shikari, but i cant seem to contact them as their email isnt vaild anymore! Any other way that i can contact Al?
Any advice on tackle?
I have already decided on 2 lighter setups!
Ocea jigger PG 1500 with Pe2 + Palms Metal Witch PE 1-2
Certate HYper 4000 with Pe3 + Hots Fake Lez PE2.5-4
As for the last setup I havent decided yet! I want it to be an OH set up. With a parabolic rod (Must!!!) I was thinking of a
Ocea jigger 3000P or a JM PE5 Narrow with PE 6 + SMITH AMJ 52 or JM Free Jigger/power spell/ Titanium Evolution 350g
Is the last setup an overkill for Sambos??
Also any other types of fishing that the charters do? was thinking of casting lures for offshore dollies or pelagics or SPs for pinkies. Squid in season? ahhaha anybody care to take me to their prime egi spots if I'll be in town??
thks!
Daniel!

cheap jigs
Submitted by Justo82 on Tue, 2013-06-18 14:38don't know if they're any good or not but at $2.95 each on motackle i just bought a heap of 90gm and 110gm Surecatch Stinger jigs.
Also picked up so Rapala bibbed minnows for $6.95.
Anyone used the surecatch jigs before? how'd you go? I'm getting them so I don't care if a few bust off while i'm learning the art of jigging.

Rod for talica 8
Submitted by nissan200mu on Mon, 2013-06-17 14:09Hey Guys
I'lll be buying a talica 8 soon and want a rod to match. How would the Major Craft Crostage 60/3 go with this reel? At around 450g, im not too sure how well balanced this setup will be. I'll be using it for light-medium offshore jigging using pe4 but also double up as a snapper rod floating out pillies. Not sure whether to get the 60/3 or the 63/3? Other recommendations are welcome. Cheers fellows

Jigging advice
Submitted by psion on Sat, 2013-06-08 11:38This has probably been done to death so apologies.
Just purchased a Jet-ski and have put a make shift rig on the back. Nothing fancy, just something to get me on the water until I can get a decent one built.

And now that the bug has truely bitten I want to get some new jigging outfits, and that is something I know zip about.
So need some advice please: (having spent my life land locked)
I have a finnor 5'6" 80lb overhead jigging rod, thought I would match it with the saltia o/h Lever drag 35 or 40?, with 80lb braid (for sambo?), would this work.?
I have a sustain 6000FG (10 kgs drag,) loaded with 30 lb braid. what jigging rod would suit (thought of the Finnor 5'6" 30lb or the Demon blood 6'4" 2/4?). Would I be able to flick soft plastics arround with this?
And then I will have about a $1300 left for a rod, reel and line, (thanx to the tax man) to fill the gap between these two, I don't know spinning reels well (being a surf fishing and O/H guy)
But though of the following:
Jigging rod in the 50lb class (Demon blood, finnor, wilson) matched to either a shimano sustain (10000FG?) or catalina (6500?), is this overkill,
Problem is I can get a good rod and go with the Sustain, or get a cheaper rod and buy the catalina?
Advice would be greatly appreciated as I am preety sure the tax man won't be this nice next year.
thanx

Vanuatu Port Villa
Submitted by tikki169 on Fri, 2013-05-17 12:34Well just got back on Saturday evening from a 6 day trip of which 4 days were fishing/spearing. I was the only one fishing and 5 mates were spearfishing so had the boat to myself pretty much all day.
The first day was the best for me starting out with a PB coral trout at 4.5kg's on a 150g jig. We were working a drop off from 35m-70m so I decided to pull out the popping gear in hope of a doggie or marauding GT. Well on my second cast the water explodes and my popper is heading to the depths at a rate of knots. The skipper and deckie call doggie so the excitement builds, I had the drag near full on my Saltiga 5000H and it was peeling line at will. The guys in the water are all cheering cause they can see me virtually laying on the floor putting pressure on the fish.
After 4-5 massive runs one of my mates surfaces and delivers the bad news, SHARK, my heart dropped and from then it was just a case of trying to save my popper. Took about 20 min and I landed a 45-50 kilo silver tip shark. I was disappointed but the crew were ecstatic, saying they'd never seen a shark take a popper before.
over the next hour or two, trout after trout came up and a really nice blue spot trevally around 5 kilo came aboard and then the call was made to hit a point opposite Haat island.
We pulled up and the spearo's were deployed and instantly "doggie" rang out as the guys saw packs of them lurking on the bottom (like cows was the one description). I took the light jigging gear out, cause it was only 40m, and dropped a 150 knife jig down and within the 6 jigs I came up solid, then a pause of about 3 seconds before the doggie realised it was hooked and then hell broke out when it turned for the reef. The line started to peel off and I counted 15m of line before I managed to stop the run and get its head turned. This went on for about 10 minutes before the doggie was boated.
By this time I was pretty shattered and my arms were still aching from the shark before when the skipper calls for another doggie, reluctantly I dropped the jig over again, half expecting nothing to happen, well once the jig hit the bottom I had about 4 seconds before all hell broke loose again and my drag was screaming, arms burning and legs shaking. The first run must have lasted about 50m all along the bottom, how I never got bust off on the coral still amazes me but I survived the first run so I was in with a good chance. This fight lasted 20-25 minutes. I was so shattered I had to pull up with my right hand, then swap hands so I could wind down with my right hand to. by the end my fingers were cramping upand the sweat was pooring off my face and down my legs. It ran me into the deeper water around 70m and then into the shallows at 20m, how I never got sharked also puzzles me.
Eventually colour was seen and a decent size doggie could be seen. My heart almost stopped when the first gaff shot was missed and the fish took another run, thankfully only a short one, the second shot hit the mark and the doggie was boated, 19.2 kilo or 42lbs on PE3, Daiwa Catalina 4000 and a Xzoga 6013 taka rod with 100lbs leader. I was done and dusted for the day and could hardly pick my arms up.
Over the next 3 days I pretty much dedicated to popping for a doggie and GT but came up with nothing, being bust off twice on the coral when putting poppers in over the shallows on a run out tide, one being a GT around 15 kilo. Loads of trout, some Barracuda around 1m.
All up it was a great trip with an excellent bunch of guys. Next time we'll head to the outer islands on a live aboard rather than staying in Port Villa. The spearo's managed to land only 2 doggies at 8 and 14 kilo but lost heaps to sharks. One of the guys was dragged from 25m to about 35m when his hand got caught in the 400lbs mono on this spear, thankfully the line snapped and ripped his glove off or things could have ended badly for him. The doggie was lost to the sharks to.
This is the last 5 min of the fight

Placement of Hooks on Jigs with "squid skirts"
Submitted by Justo82 on Tue, 2013-05-14 14:15Hi all,
Ready to start some serious jigging. got my jigging outfit, and about 6 different jigs so far, a mixture of octo jigs, and metals.
One thing I'm curious about is placement of hooks. I've done a bit of reading on the site, and most people say that you attach the hooks to a split ring off the top tow point on the jig. But what about when the jig has a squid skirt? With Fanky and Daiwa Pirate jigs, they come rigged with the hooks off the bottom, and the squid skirt over the top of the hook/s. Should I change this around? Remove the squid skirt? or just add an extra hook to the top?
My jigs that I have range from 40g to 120g and I'll be using a PE 1.5-3 rod on a shimano stradic 5000 FJ reel, running 30lb braid. Majority of my jigging will be done in around 20-40m.
thanks,
Justo

Jigging Help Please
Submitted by kelsea on Tue, 2013-04-16 20:16I have the gear for jigging but am still unsure as to how to use it properly and always find myself changing back to the old patanosta and bait. I fish 35 - 45 metres of water. My jigs consist of pirates, pencils and octanaughts. I cast them away from the boat allowing them to hit the bottom directly under the boat what do i do from there? Am i two wind up a turn from the bottom and then twitch the jig, do i work it prefusley or ten metres and redrop? I really don't know, someone please help.

Name this Jig?
Submitted by Tony on Mon, 2013-04-15 09:14I picked up this jig last time I was down in Perth from either a current or previous site sponser, I got so many I can't remember what brand it was. I think it's about 60 gram and has a real nice flutter on the drop. I was using a butterfly jig the other day and was getting a few hits every now and then, switched to this jig and it got smashed first drop for about 20 drops in a row.
Does anyone knows what it is? I'd like to put it on the shopping list for next time.

Videos of demersal jigs in action
Submitted by beau on Wed, 2013-04-03 20:28Hey guys, now that I've got the boat I've started to buy a couple jigs here and there. I know the different shapes give off a different action so I was hoping you guys could post any YouTube videos of jigs in action underwater that you might have seen. And if you've used that particular jig let us know how you like to jig them and what you've caught. Hopefully there are a few vids out there and we can build up a bit of a video archive..
Thanks guys.

Jigging the FADS
Submitted by Webbwah on Tue, 2013-04-02 13:36
So been jigging the depths and super comfortable getting half a dozen amberjacks and sambo on most trips out.
Thinking of trying further out towards the FADS. But not too sure if the jigging is the way to go out there or would we be better off throwing some livies and baits down.
What is ur opinion?

Twin assist hook question demersal jigging
Submitted by nissan200mu on Mon, 2013-03-25 04:27Hey boys, hope everyone's been getting amongst some fish. I was just wondering if anyone has had issues with twin assist hooks fouling where the two hooks end up facing the same direction instead of opposite directions while jigging? Even though this has been happening, I'm still getting hooked up but I prefer the hooks facing away from each other. Any feedback would be great. Cheers

Jigging stuff
Submitted by Justo82 on Mon, 2013-03-18 21:36I'm totally intrigued by jigging at the moment. I'm loving the idea and way it works.
I want to get a jigging combo. I'm thinking a spinning combo will be the way to go, but open for suggestions. I'm not after top of the line stuff here. Just entry to mid level equipment.
Ill be jigging mostly 20-50m and would like to be able to bottom bounce for demersals while I'm at it.
Fire away with your recommendations.

Worth jigging in shallow water?
Submitted by sstevee on Sun, 2013-03-10 10:55Hey guys,
So I've been tossing up for a while now wether or not to try some jigging. I've got a new 5000fj stradic spooled with 30lb braid which has been sitting on my desk since November...
Now I've only just upgraded from the dinghy to a 4.75m Ali so most of our fishing has been around some lumps on the 3 mile, which so far hasn't produced the most exciting fish but managed to get into some skippy which was good for a play...
Wanted to get some opinions as to wether or not it would be worth chucking the stradic on a jig rod?... Once we get some confidence up and if the wether plays the game I'm sure we may head out a bit further but atm we're severely lacking spots so we've been trying to suss the 3mile, but would I be wasting time jigging on the 3mile?
Really I'm just itching to put a rod on the stradic and actually use it, just trying to decide which rod?!?!
cheers, steve

Noob rigs
Submitted by Browndog on Mon, 2013-02-25 17:52Hi all. Completely new to jigging and setting up my first outfit. The rod & reel will be used for bait fishing as well, so was going to run the 30lb braid to a snap swivel (as I do with all my bait rigs) and then run a 30 lb fluro leader to the jig (60g Black Magic) Any suggestions on the leader length, was going to run around 1m?
I've read on here to stay away from snap swivels due to the stresses of the jigging action, but want to know if this is absolutely necessary with light weight jigs?
I did invest in some split rings and pliers just in case, but preference is still to run a snap swivel.
Also for spooling the reel with braid, was planning on running a few laps of self amalgamating rubber tape (thick sticky rubber) around the spool first so the braid doesn't slip, will this work OK or should I definitely run a mono backing? Again, happy to spend the extra on the mono if it's really necessary, but figure 300 yards of braid will be more than enough for my shallow water fishing, should cover anything I'm likely to encounter? Spool (Penn Spinfisher 650) should hold around 450 metres of 30lb braid according to the manufacturer.
Thanks all, appreciate any advice/suggestions, complete novice when it comes to this style of fishing, looking forward to testing out the new kit. Also have a Jurien charter booked for middle of March, might take the new outfit along for a try out, would be nice for it to get a Dhu under it's belt early in life!
Cheers,
BD.
EDIT: added a photo of the knot that I would normally use to tie mono to terminal tackle, no idea what it is called but has been pretty reliable, and very easy to tie. Any ideas what knot this is, and will it stand up to a small sambo?

A good value light jigging rod??
Submitted by MickG on Wed, 2013-02-20 16:21Gday,
Been looking for a light PE 1-3 jig rod 5'6" to 6' to put my TD Luna 300 on as a general purpose light offshore setup for jig/casting/bottom bouncing with maybe 30lb braid. Dont have too much experience with jigging rods. Budget probably less than $200. Happy for 2nd hand. Any thoughts? MAny of the jig rods look pretty heavy next to this little reel.
Any other alternative suggestions welcomed.
Cheers,
Mick

rigging jigs
Submitted by robert1979 on Sun, 2013-02-17 20:02Hello, been reading up on the best way to rig up knife jigs but just getting myself tied up in knots (excuse the pun).
I was planning to rig up as below, if you can understand my crap diagram. I like the idea of rigging all my jigs at home to the point shown in the bottom picture so I dont have to worry about tying knots etc when out fishing (its not my strong point). Similar idea behind using a snap swivel (or similar), quick change of jigs, less messing about. I will probably have a wind on leader attached to my braid as I might use the reel for trolling occasionally. I was told to avoid attching the jig directly to the snap swivel.
So, does this look reasonable or does anyone see problems? Is it better to ditch the wind on leader, and tie the braid directly to snap swivel? If so, what knot?
Appreciate any pointers!! Also if anyone has any pics to throw that would be great as well.

Too much information on reels Need help
Submitted by firedream5 on Fri, 2013-02-15 10:13So ive been reading about reels for the last 3 days straight and now i think i have too much info in regards to reels. Basically i want to get my son a reel that he can use for jigging, and bottom bashing. i have a salina II 24kg jig rod at the moment for him but it came with a 16000 salina III reel which to me seems too big. So i was looking at saragosa, sustains and stradics (8000). Im impressed with the drag rating on the saltigas and now i just think anything without the 30kg drag rating is shit so im swaying to a saltiga or stella 6000.
So basically i want a reel that if he hooks on to say a 30kg Sambo he has a reel that will get it in but not a reel that is huge. So there you go please someone help me decide what will work because im starting to go insane. My method of thinking is if im going to spend $300 on a saragosa and its not good enough then i would have been better off buying a saltiga to begin with. Having said that my son is 11 a mad keen fisherman very advanced fishing wise for his age but is a saltiga just too much will he be ok with a cheaper reel and still be able to pull in large fish? I have no experience when it comes to buying reels for this type of fishing so im hoping people who go out all the time will be able to help me out. What do you use for this type of fishing?
