OH reel to match Saltist PE2-3

Hey

I currently run a marquesa MA12 and it works fine but maybe a little heavy. The Saltist reels might be a little wide for my liking (I like the weight to sit directly over the rod) .... wondering if anyone can recommend another OH to match the Saltist rod?

used for metro demersal jigging 120 - 200gms. Also use it up north but same jig weights.

recommendations soft plastic demersal rod ?

Hey guys

After pushing my salty fighter way beyond its capabilities on the weekend I am looking for a demersal soft plastic/jig rod probably about a PE 3.

I take it PE 3 is about right for this I usually fish 30-40m what are peoples thoughts on rod length

So far a mate has recommended a demon blood 64 combi jerk, has anyone got any other recommendations?

I will either put my Sol 4000 or saltiga 4000H on it so it has to be spin

cheers

Advice wanted for jigging set up.

Hi Everyone
I've new to the forum i've been reading posts on here for quite a while and thought it was time to sign up.

I'm looking at some Sambo jigging charters before the best part of the season ends and looking at what gear to bring.

I've got a a couple reels i'm looking at matching up some jig rods to my current reels and also what jigging line  would you reccommend to suit.
You're advice would be appreciated. I currently have:

Daiwa Catalina 4500 (Old Model)
Daiwa Catalina 6500 (Old Model) currently got 80 lb power pro.

I have a Saltiga S-Extreme 56 HFS Pe 4-6 that I use for kings here in SA not sure if it would suit Sambo jigging.

My budget for the rod is $500 Max each ( Would prefer something less if there was good option) & still deciding the budget to spend on the line but i want decent gear for the job.
I've looked at some of the Wilson jig rods that claim big pulling power and easy on the back but never used them before, from memory they were about $380 each.

Spare o/head reel

Gday fellas

Was going through all my gear the other day and came across a tekota 500 ( 64cm per crank, 8 kg drag ) with pe3, and was wondering whether this reel could be matched up with a rod around 5:6 TO 6:0 in the same line class to be used for some slow type jigging with pirate style and lucanus jigs say 80 to 120 - 150 gram, price range from $300 - $400. Anyone have any ideas.

Cheers Nev

How do you jig

So, I'm starting to fish without bait.  I have a few fanky jigs, and no real idea on how to use them.

Do you let it hit the bottom then flat out retrieve?  Sit it a meter or so off the bottom and bounce it up and down?

im kinda lost with it all.

JIGGING , POPPING IN MEDITERRANEAN SEA

Hey guys

i want to share you a new experience that i had in JIGGING , POPPING IN MEDITERRANEAN SEA , i only got a small tuna on my first time trying to go fishing in the place ( will upload video later )

we went fishing beside petrol platforms , we didnt have such good tools for jigging and popping yet , so we decided as a team to start building our tools, so please any good expert would help me finding the best tools for jiggin and popping like the reel and the

rod not the lures , i was thinking about buying SALTIST 6500 as i found it might be the best at my budjet but i am afraid also still if it may not fit jiggin or popping, so please if any suggestions let me know

thanks

Cape seriolas

Went out this morning in search of a bit of demersal tucker and managed to extract a couple of PB's.  The dhu's were a bit absent for me but havent fished this area in my own boat before so was kind of just running blind.  Got to get a navionics card for sure.  Did get one dhu at 50cm which went back to grow a bit.  But the good bit was pulling a cracker sambo on my xzoga PE2 and a decent YTK.  Bloody hell those kings are something else, havent had to work that hard in a long time.  Big skippy, a sweep and a few other tid bits came over the side as well.

Christmas Island jigging

Hey fellas,

Heading over to Christmas Island to live for a year or two. Boat and rods are already on their way. Just wondering if anyone here had done any jigging over there? Any depths/jigs advice would be much appreciated. Really want to add a dogtooth to the list but anything to keep the missus keen on fishing would be great.

Sambo carnage

Hi all,

we headed out on Sunday morning for our first crack at sambos for the season. Fishing in 120m we had no trouble hooking up.

However despite regular hookups, we failed to land a single one. I am confident it is not the gear, more of a technique/experience issue.

With the drag fully loaded, they were still peeling line off and we were taken to ground several times resulting in the 150lb leader busting. When we did get the fish mid water they were quickly sharked (resulting in the kevlar assist hooking busting and in one case the 400g jig getting bent at 90 degrees). Despite a lot of action, the only thing we got to the boat was a 2.5m bronze whaler.

Does anyone have any advice on tackling sambos once hooked to avoid the reef and sharks? Is shallow jigging a better option?

Cheers

New Jigger

I've been wanting to try jigging for a while and I've spent a fair bit of time reading this forum and gathering information. I was down in Gero a couple of weeks ago and picked up a new rod, N S Blackhole Torque Magic Eye PE2 and some jigs in the 40g to 150g sizes. I thought that I'd start of with the light gear because the waters off Carnarvon are quite shallow, 20m or less untill you get closer to the islands.

Last Friday I headed out to see if I could catch something on a jig. Looks like a good place to start....

Jigging Master Monster Game Reel

New SW Stella

Well well. I have just heard that after a mere 5 years the SW Stella 20000 is being replaced with a new model plus a 30000 as well in 2013. Very interesting.

Missing the strikes

Went out from Two Rocks today and didn't bait a hook.  only jigged.  first serious attempt at jigging.  metals and plastics.  Used my new jigging outfit from Campbells.  Caught a 67 cm amberjack on a elevator jig head and mccarthy plastic (baby elf paddle tail, i think?).  got tailed a couple of times, and missed a couple of other strikes on the plastics (just missed the hook).  on the metals (Daiwa pirate and Lamble 90g something), i felt quite a few hits on the end of a flutter, just as I started a retrieve, but none stuck.  one took the jig and a couple of metres of line, before spitting it.

What am i doing wrong on the strike?

Knots for jigging

Few Questions for yas.

What knot does every one use to tie there jig to main line?

And what do you tie it to? I was tieing strait onto the solid ring with a loop knot but it managed to cut through the 60lb leader a couple times losing good fish and brand new jigs.

Some one told me to put a swivel onto the split ring and tie onto that with the old blood knot.

Does any one have some pics of there set up jigs they could chuck up. I have been trying to look at it on all the post with jigs still hanging out of the fish's mouths but cant see them properly.

Cheers

Shore jigging

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone out there has gotten into shore jigging?, I am toying with the idea of trying it out this season on black Jew from my local jetty but we usually fish them at night so was wondering if there is any jigs that would be recommended (maybe glowing) or am I just dreaming.

Cheers Yewie

Xzoga Taka si 6013

Just wondering what reel everyone is running on there Xzoga 6013 ???

I just bought one and was going to run my 5000 sustain FG but i don't like the way it balances on the rod. I bolted on my 4500 saltiga and to me it feels great so i'll probably stick with the saltiga.

Need to buy some heavier jigs now as my collection only ranges from 40-100 grams. Geez this jigging is addictive and expensive

cheers tim

Sustain FG

I'm usually a Daiwa man but decided i would try a Shimano reel for my new T curve 5-9kg rod. I ended up getting a 5000 Sustain. I have to admit the reel looks pretty nice with the black finish and is very smooth, but whats the go with the play in the gearing. Initially i thought it was play in the handle but took it back to the shop and showed them and they said the play is just the gearing and assured me it is normal. I wasn't convinced so the bloke pulled out another brand new 5000 sustain and let me play with it and it had the same play in the gearing. I also emailed Shimano and they said some play is normal.

Does anyone else own a sustain FG 5000 and have the forward/backwards play in the handle from the gearing ???

Easiest way to test if you have the play is to hold the rotor so it doesnt move and then move the handle forwards and backwards. A mate of mine has a couple of the new Stradics and reckons they have the play also.

Also i've got a Xzoga taka si 6012 with a new 3000 Caldia which is a awesome demersal jigging combo but i'm going to buy the Xzoga taka si 6013 aswell. I was thinking about buying a 6000 Sustain spool and putting as much Pe3 on it as i can. So then the Sustain can then be used on the T curve for chasing snapper running 15lb braid and then i can bolt it onto the Xzoga and swap the spool over to the 6000 spool with the Pe3 for jigging. Anyone know for sure if the 6000 Sustain FG spool will fit on the 5000 Sustain FG, and how much does a spare spool cost roughly.

cheers tim

Jig Rod

I know it all comes down to personal preference but i am chasing a few dieas on Jig rods to look at.

The rod will be matched to stella 5000.

i have the stella on a 7ft trevela at the moment and was looking at getting a rod thats around the 6ft or a bit shorter. The rod will be used mainly for demersals with a few sambo thrown in every now and then.

any advice or ideas would be great.

cheers

Which ones do you have success with, and for which species?

Up to 120 gm.

PE3 Braid for jigging OH

Hey guys just recently purchased a shimano ocea jigger 2000 and looking for a good quality PE 3 braid around the 50lb mark in a spool of over 300m preferably 500m. Would also prefer to buy online.

Does anyone have any suggestions

Cheers

Chris

squidgy plastics and s factor

I am going to be using some squidgy soft plastics for the first time on saturday (glow wrigglers / phosphorus / frostbite / white lightening) targeting dhu and baldchin.  is it worth rubbing that tube of "S Factor" on the plastic?  Does it make a difference, or just extra work, resulting in  less time that he jig is in the water?

knots - jigheads to leaders

Whats the best knot to use when tying jig heads to leaders?

Lefty's loop?

Perfection loop?

Something else?

ukari sea falcon jigs

Have any of you guys had success with these jigs, particularly in the spiral finish?

Picked one up because it looked a perfect profile for bottom fish, and true to that , I got dusted on the first drop.

I did notice they were very flighty on the drop, more so than anything else yet.

Went back to the shop  for another , but they only had spiral finish left in stock, hence my question.
