Mud Crabbing Etiquette in Karratha
Submitted by Busted Arse on Sat, 2011-10-15 15:32So I had a bit of a punt into Airport Creek with a mate to do a spot of mudcrabbing. Its not the biggest system so youd expect others to be out dropping nets as well.
So we pull up near one which we werent sure if was ours or not and identified it wasnt ours without pulling the net and moved on and around the corner comes flying another boat obviously the owner of said crabnet who chases us down to the point of nudging our 2 water crafts. I dont really care as mine is a 25 year old piece of shit quintrex runabout but he managed to put the biggest dent on his very new looking quintrex coastrunner. So we pull up and starts accusing us of pulling his nets. All we could say was no we didnt and..........they stood there just huffed and puffed with a look of "DERP" on their faces. I was waiting for them to jump over on ropes like pirates in the carribean and start swinging. Violence didnt eventuate but was just wondering if this is normal behaviour?
Anyways in the chance that skipper may be a contributer of this forum, if you are the owner of that Quintrex coast runner off memory you looked rather fat(keep ur shirt on dude) with curly hair and your deckie who looked like a dwarf with a mohawk.........im really sorry about the dent but we didnt see you charging up behind like a raging homo.
That is all.

Plastics vs Bait
Submitted by Teflon Coated on Mon, 2011-10-10 10:07Well, a recent trip to Coral Bay has provided a prime opportunity to test the bait vs plastics/jigs.
A mate Phil and i headed out through a very ugly south passage due to low tide and a fairly brisk SouWester. Hoping the wind would ease we punched out to some ground in about 60m of water. We both dropped two rigs, i had an o/head with the standard paternoster rig and a mix of squid and occy. This was dropped to the bottom, drag and ratchet set and then time to concentrate on the jig/spin combo with a berkley nuclear chicken.
Phil's set up was basically the same, so it was time to see how we go. He was the first to boat a fish and it was only after our second drop he pulled this beauty up.
I need to point out that at this stage i had not had a touch on the bait nor my plastic so was keen to get on the board. I hauled his bait in to ensure there was no tangles as the fight this Robbo put up was pretty good. His bait had not been touched either!
We did a couple more drifts across the same ground and could only come up with a trevally.
The wind had started to ease and i made the call to head out wide to some ground i knew would produce. We headed out and found some bait balls, they were sticking to the bottom and no visual/surface signs of them. The bait ball was right on top of some ground i had found quality fish on previously so it was a no brainer to give this a crack, with a couple of drifts we found the bigger fish hiding on the out skirts of the bait ball, we were watching the jigs dropping on the sounder and could see the fish we were targeting. I took a snap of the sounder to give you an idea.
We caught a fairly mixed bag but still no joy with the bait, we decided to remove the paternoster rig with the bait and drop a couple of octa jigs. The results were almost instant, Phil hauled up a beatiful sized Rankin Cod.
We moved to one more nice peice of ground and again Phil was been dragged all over the place by what we guessed to be a big cod that had taken a liking to his McCathy SP. I was hauling in a cobia that has taken the nuclear chicken and trying to keep an eye on the sounder at the same time, the ground we were drifting over was getting better and we could see the big fish hanging off the bottom. I dropped a fresh SP and jigged it twice then bang and it was gone! I didnt even get a chance! Time to re rig.
There was a fair variey of fish during the morning, we had a couple of mahi mahi swin up behind a fish we got into the boat but they wouldnt touch anything we threw at them. There was also heaps of cobia, one just sat in the shadow of the boat for a while but wasnt interested in our jigs.
We boated a couple of splangled's and headed for home making it back to camp to see the end of the AFL Grand Final and have a few cold brews!
After that morning out, the soft plastics and jigs had beaten the bait hands down!
Cheers,
Russ

Blue Bastard Video
Submitted by Paul Cunningham on Sun, 2011-10-02 18:40Here is a video from the weekend just gone. Mark Davis and I went looking for Blue Bastards up here and found some. Once hooked this fish decided to run through the mangroves and out the other side. Being a brand new flyline, MD decided to jump in and follow it through the branches.
Enjoy,

Westmoore Island
Submitted by Griffo84 on Tue, 2011-09-20 15:33G'day everyone, I have booked a weeks stay at the Westmoore Island accommodation in march next year and was wondering if anyone has stayed there or fished the area? I heard the surrounding creeks are good for muddies, jacks, bream, cod etc.
I would like to explore offshore for some tasty reef fish. What depth and what sort of ground should I be looking at on my sounder for species such as reds/rankin? Also do you have to travel far offshore to get into 'red' country? Red emperor is on my bucket list and keen as hell to catch one! I have a 5.35m trailcraft and a lowrance HDS 10 sounder.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Karratha / Headland boat advice
Submitted by mr_meks on Sun, 2011-09-11 12:14Just chasing a bit of advice regarding what size boat im going to need to get out and explore the area shown. Chances are a move to headland or karratha is in my near future and I dont think ill survive without some sort of water going vessel. All I know about headland is theres loads of creek options and some channel markers offshore.
Is it possible to get away with something like this? Also is 200 hours on a fourstroke a lot I have no idea.

Submitted by ryangler on Thu, 2011-09-08 19:10Hi Guys,

I'm looking to get my own boat too, but thought it would be a good idea to get out a couple of times to get my head around what i should be looking for in a boat to use us here eg
-size, hp, features, deck layout etc
so if anyone needs someone to pull anchor, chip in for fuel and bait and even just some company pm let me know cheers
Hedland afternoon marker bash
Submitted by Paul Cunningham on Thu, 2011-09-08 15:37Mark and I shot out on Tuesday afternoon for a quick channel marker fish. For those that don't know, we have 40 plus channel markers that begin in the the port and finish way out on the horizon. There are a few ways to fish them and I have found that if the tide is ripping through, gently nosing your boat up to the very base and getting stuck in the eddy created by the marker works well or you can begin your drift up-current from the marker and cast at it as you drift by. The last few weeks have seen plently of fun Queenfish hanging around which have been loving small stickbaits and on Tuesday Mark got to tangle with a larger than usual Cobia that was a welcomed suprise. I have just purchased a Nitro Voodoo which with 10lb strung through it I have managed to keep most fish off and away from the barnacles but a few have had me stitched up. Mark has been preferring to arm himself with his sweet new Dawia interline baitcast combo.
God bless

Port Hedland
Submitted by claymore on Mon, 2011-09-05 11:26G'day FW crew, i'm after some advice from the pilbara fisho's about seasons and if what i'm thinking is possible / a good idea.
I am hopeing to start my christmas holiday's early, the start of december, and head up to Port Hedland.
The missus works there and most likely won't get much time off over christmas so i thought i might drive up from Perth.
My first concern is that the Wet Season starts in december and i'm guessing this is when the cyclones start rolling in.
Is december a good time to be heading up? and what is the fishing like this time of year?
or will the weather make fishing opportunities few and fare between?
and what can i expect from the tides?
I have a 4WD and 4mtr tinny with a chart plotter / sounder.
Fishing wise i would be hopeing to get amongest some queenies, treva's, barra and mud crabs.
Any advise on anything fishing / weather around port hedland appreciated.
cheers.

A Qiuck trip off Tantas
Submitted by deepwater on Tue, 2011-08-30 20:53i was sitting thinking of going all morning so the call goes out and i got a crew and off we go
boat in at about 1030 and lures in at 1035 straight out in front of the passage, it was a good SE blowing 15/18 knots so slow it was
just over the 40m mark and we are on 10mins and i have a 30/35kg black marlin boat side
off we go and 60m mark here we go again, this was bigger. i watched him come up on the lure and he was good [80ish] had a quick strike and a few big jumps and spat it
off again 85m mark another fish comes it for a look only a small one this time, he had a quick bill wack and off he went
start trolling and 100m mark i started pulling the lures in and the last lure was coming in and a sailfish starts chasing, so we stop the boat for a bottom bounce and he swam off
in 5 miles of the passage we had 3 marlin and a sailfish up, his was great way to start the day off
first fish was a good goldband which a good shark liked the taste of, it was the biggest goldband head i have ever seen
we got 8 goldband, 1 pinksnapper, 1 tomato cod and a saddletail
was a good way to kill an arvo
the fish i measured was 54cm to get the size of the head

Jigged Long Tail
Submitted by Swamprat on Tue, 2011-08-23 18:58With the great spell of Weather we have had on and off for the last few weeks, just went out for a few hours on Saturday 13th with Natalie, I did some jigging while she flicked a few baits around as we mooched around for a Cobia. Had a pod of small dolphins hanging and playing in the bow wave on the way out.
Had a good size Cobia up for a look at the jig and as I free spooled back down he slid down after and a few jigs came up solid, but the speed this thing took off it was no Cobia. After a good fight and a few circles around the boat had the Long Tail boat side, missus couldn't get it in the net due to the size so tailed it. Managed to get it swimming after a bit and it was on its way. Few small bits and pieces after that but was a good quick session for a few hours work.

Port Hedland last few days
Submitted by Wazza79 on Sat, 2011-08-20 09:45Have been in Hedland for work since Tuesday and here til next Friday. Fishing has been very slow. Tides aren't the best at the moment either, but we've been giving it a good crack. Been throwing Sp's everywhere with very little interest from the depths, trolled out to channel marker 34 where the bait schools where in mass proportion, heaps of surface action but no takers, so its hittin the creeks this weekend for hopefully a bit more action.
If any of you have some good advice for something local, please don't hold back.
Did manage a nice Blue-nose Salmon on a ganged mulie out the end if Finucane Wed evening. Cooked him up fresh on the beach with some oysters off the rocks.
Will keep on searching.
Until then. Tight Lines!!
Our second-last day, and the weather finally started playing the game, and so did the fishing. Got out in the channel again and there was a bit of action to keep us on our toes for a while. Massive schools of Trevs, tuna and school mackies to keep us entertained for a few hours. Kept two Mack Tuna for the BBQ, which weren't too bad either.
Good to see Fisheries around in numbers too.

Right Time, Right Place
Submitted by Brucesta on Tue, 2011-08-16 10:18Well i couldn't pass up another oportunity to get out on the water with the forcast looking so good, the bottom fishing was crap but i marked an area where bait was working in the morning for a place to start looking for billfish mostly Sailfish in slighly shallower water of 30m instead of the 40+ everyone hits the marlin at just to see if the sails like the dirtier water. get back there 3.5 hours later and the action is still on, birds working and fish all around so out went the spread and heres the results.
Needless to say the best fishing moment of my life happened this sunday just gone. I was about to land my new PB spanish Mack pushing around the 20kg or more mark, previous best was maybe 10kgs only to have this giant shape appear boatside, i was thinking bloody big shark, but no it was the mother of all Black Marlin, i'm guessing at over 100kgs EASY wanting my mackerel as lunch, he made the 5ft whaler look small while attacking my fish, he tangled into my line and i couldn't get him to eat the mack as he felt the tension but the 10 mins we had fighting this beast was just unbelievable, made me realise my pushers where rather undersized, we hooked one more black marlin that day at a more regular 30-40kg but didn't stay connected but a heap of spaniards that destroyed my pushers and a few mack tunas and everyone onboard had a bloody good fish to pose with, enjoy the pics fellas. Also now have 5 destroyed pushers but it was well worth doing it means i can go online shopping this week.
Gareth with the first fish, if only i knew what was about to happen i would have had a go a rigging him up
what the hell is that chasing my big Mackerel?
BIG marlin, oh shit! my fish at the top of screen, 5ft whaler mid shot to the left and well you can work out the other one...
he's tangled in the line and PISSED!
see ya later losers!
TOUCHDOWN!
wait a minute, he's coming back...
can we move forward please?
FORWARD FORWARD FORWARD!!!!!
Untangled, off to fight another day and the end result, dinner last night.
Gareths 1st Spanish Mack ever, released.
John on the tuna, definantly should have rigged this one, released.
Arsey Bitch aka Tobi with another big Spaniard from my boat, released.
John, now in on the Mack attack, released
Gareth with his final fish for the day, the biggest one we landed, released.

Moonlit Bazzas
Submitted by Daisy on Sun, 2011-08-14 07:41It's starting to warm up here so I thought I'd go up the creek with the main target being Blue Salmon but in the off chance a Barra or 2 might be lurking, got in before the low and trolled and casted small to medium hardbodies with plenty of success on small to middling Blues. I guess we would have got about 15 or 20 between us. We were way out the front in the gutter waiting for the tide to push up which it finally did around sun down as we got in I said to memate Brett that we'll troll in and out of the first stretch and then head off, We trolled downstream but were doing a bit over 3 knots with the current and it was on the way back I got hit, turned to see the Barra jump and got the jitters as I do with the first one every season . Landed her at about 85, back to the troll and got another around 78. managed to lose another boatside, Brett lost one on the first jump and then I lost another the sticks (thankfully hooks were barbless), it was perfectly calm and moon was well up, beautiful watching those Barras jump.
By about 8:30 it was time to pull the pin.
Cheers, Daisy

Trip Report - Las Vegas and Billfish - Long Odds?
Submitted by Brucesta on Wed, 2011-08-10 11:30After my initiation with Damo on Lastchance over the Dampier Classic i needed to head out and try for myself, i bugged him to no end on what to do and how to do it and learnt heaps of little tips and tricks, needless to say more rod holders are being fitted and outriggers installed if only for the wank factor but the benefits when Billfishing are awesome and i now know several different ways to rig a bait, set a spread and find the fish. I needed to put this into practice so we are already at long odds, i knew roughly where the bait was but no co-ordinants that's what the sounder is for. Lets make this fun and invite 3 guys who have never seen a billfish in real life let alone tangled with one, sweeeeet!!! screw it we are on a roll and lets throw into the mix a shitty weather forecast that changed in a few days after i checked it, no worries i'm feeling good.
First job find some livies and i had a hell of a battle holding onto a school in front of an ore carrier as the boys got some absolute horses come into the tank, excellent but it's gonna be fun drifting them in the shit wind and sharp chop we had, no worries i thought we'd start with the pushers anyway and find that bait, we spotted a heap of birds working to our north and so we headed that way. The whales were having a ball playing away but in those conditions it made it really hard to see them with the clears down i was driving a little blind. There was one other boat foolishly out there with us (turned out to be Dodgy and Co) and as we passed them they hooked up, i then saw the bait ball and spirits lifted greatly in these shit conditions.
Only about 50m away, i didn't have the big lens on which sucks
splashdown, the slap noise is bloody loud!
We had one strike early on that didn't stick, not to worry we could see blacks free swimming in the waves so it was only a matter of time, i ruled out the live bait option as it was too rough at the time and then a Mackie jumped on and had a bit of fun with a pusher, no damage to the lure and back out it went, the bait had moves SE and i decided to head to where i thought the bait ball was last weekend and we then past where we found the bait first off and then the rod screamed into life. just like my previous report a similar thing happened, i had my new Fin Nor Santiago 25 2 Speed with 700m of 15kg out, my Okuma Titus 50 -2 speed with 600m of 24kg on shotgun and then my Shimano Tyrnos 30 and cheap Shimano 10-15kg rod on short corner. It was the Tyrnos that went off, no probs that had 15kg line and about 500m of it but i really wanted the fish on either the big girl for the sake of the newbies or the bling reel as it then justifies the expense, nope, i lucked out there...
Tristan grabbed the rod and i began shouting instructions to the rest of the guys to clear the decks and teaser, Tristan to keep the rod low and to keep his thumb off the reel spool, there was plenty of line there and then how this will work.
Tristan on the job working hard
The fight took a little while as she had taken a lot of line early in the fight as we sorted our shit out so slowly we got line back, soon we had colour and i jumped from the helm to the deck to assist and order the others to arm the camera and the steering and keep us heading to sea. The little fella had one more burst in him and he performed nicely for the camera ripping another 50m of line off as he headed east.
angry little fish!
We played him back in and i instructed Tristan on what to do, he did as he was asked and once i had that leader he backed the drag down and i slowly leadered him to the boat and grabbed that bill! He was hooked good and it took some time to remove in the water but once clear i got Tristan in position and got the boat sorted and we pulled him aboard for a few pics before we swam him off strong.
Leader in hand
not happy
a stoked angler and skipper
out in the sun
Tristans biggest fish before that was probably a cod of 50cm or so and he had wanted to catch a big fish before he headed to Tassie for work. So Las Vegas and her crew played the odds well and returned back with its first Marlin, the bug has bit hard now and i want more, i now have quite a few eager deckies now willing to chase them too which is always good, off we go again this Saturday!

Monte Bello Island Safari July 2011
Submitted by Teflon Coated on Fri, 2011-08-05 10:28Hi Guys & Girls,
I have just returned from a week long trip to the Monties and really couldnt let the opportunity pass to show some of you a destination that has been a dream of mine for quite some time!
I have seen and heard many stories about the Monties and the week that we had lived up to all expectations! The Monte Bello Islands cater for every type/style of fishing which is just awesome.....but wait there is more! Our week was filled with not only with fishing but snorkelling, scuba, surfing, island tours and just chilling out.
Not having been to the Monties before I opted to go out with a charter group based out of Exmouth. Myself and a few mates did a bit of reseach, found a few spare seats and paid the deposit (now to sell the idea to the wife!!). The mix of people on the charter was pretty diverse and included a couple of ladies. The group was great and the ladies had an absoloute ball, actually out fishing there hubbies on a couple of occasions. The trip was made more enjoyable by the skipper and crew who managed the group and the trip with an air of professionalism but still happily chatting with all on board and really making everyone welcome.
The routine is pretty standard, our first 2 days were bottom bashing. We steamed out on absoloute glassy conditions and anchored on one of the spots. We had a cracker of a day with a full mixed bag and catching our bag limit by 2pm. The catch included Red Emporer, Coral Trout, Scarlet Sea Perch, Robinson Sea Perch, Rankin Cod, Spangled Emporer, Long Nose Snapper, Cobia and Mackeral. As the charter is an extended stay all processing of the fish is done offshore and each person is allowed to take 20kgs of fillets home at the end of the week. After 2 days of bottom bashing we all had our 20kgs of fillets neatly packed in cartons in the freezer and the rest of the week was sports fishing heaven.
The next day was a full islands tour including a visit to ground zero, where the nuclear testing took place back in the 1950's. A quick stop over in a channel with an outgoing tide to cast a few poppers of the ledges didnt produce any fish landed but a small group of GT's ended up with some nice Sebile bling and our tackle bags where lighter to carry back up the cliffs. Lunch back atthe house boat was calling and an afternoon dive and surf was on the cards.
The following morning the call was to head out wide in search of a few billies and be back by lunch to cruise the islands. The crew that went had a ball hooking 8 billies and landing one nice Marlin. They also caught a number of mackeral which provided some entertainment. I opted for a "dingy day" with a mate. It was another total glass off and neap tides, we were trolling and casting lures and poppers for hours which was just awesome, there are a few pics below that give you an idea of the weather we scored. A day like this was perfect do do a bit of reconaissance and suss out a few spots, Ah Chong Island was a perfect spot for a swim quick walk on the beach. It was just amazing, standing on the bow of the dingy while trolling lures and watching hundreds of turtles, a huge variety of fish, dugongs and a few reef sharks slipping by. There are islands everywhere to explore and coral bomies that are lurking in every channel.
We jumped into one of these channels onto a large group of bomies for a quick snorkel but instead of taking the spear gun i was armed with my GoPro camera and Eye of Mine underwater housing. Its a new aquisition so was just getting an idea of how it works but its just point and shoot so off we went. I saw more Coral Trout in one dive than i have seen in my whole life. There was a massive variety of fish and the country is great for a free dive at a max of 6-7 meters on low tide its really something that anyone could do. (i will post some vids soon!)
I am now in planning to do a trip to the Monties out of Dampier or Fortesque with my own boat but there is certainly something to be said about a trip where you dont have to worry about the boat, fuel, water, fridges, freezers or even cooking for yourself after a big day on the water.
Although i would love to keep places like the Monties on the quiet, the Monties should be on everyone's Bucket List. Hope you enjoy the pics!
Cheers,
Russ

Coral Bay 3 day adventure
Submitted by CCC on Wed, 2011-07-27 20:05
Well I just got back from one full on trip to Coral bay, where do I start......I'll take a step back a few weeks. Since the trip to the Kimberley I had settled into routine at work knowing that there were no more big trips planned for the year, well so I thought.
Get a phone call from Luke of Chivers Marine hinting at a trip to Coral Bay. He and Paul from Navico (Simrad & Lowrance) needed to do some testing of the newly released Simrad NSS12. As some of you know the Chivers guys built my boat and I had been talking with them saying that I would bring the boat down to Perth around November to get some extras fitted. Luke’s idea was that we meet at Coral Bay for a fish for a few days including testing the Simrad then he would take the boat to Perth.
As you could imagine it didn't take much to convince me. Now to organise leave and get approval from my lovely wife. This was easily organised and we locked the dates in. A few phone calls back and forward and everything was read to go. Some talk about me trying to nail my first Red and Luke suggested we have a crack at Billfish.......something I have never done and Luke is new too.
The trip is a bit off a blur, hard to remember the exact order of what happened when but I'll have a go.
I head off for the 760km drive on Wednesday morning with a plan to meet Luke and Paul there first thing Thursday. Luke and Paul had a plan to leave Perth on Wednesday, drive all night and jump on the boat for a fish when they arrive Thursday. Well that's exactly what happened.
Wild Flowers on way to Coral Bay
We hit the water midmorning Thursday with a plan to get some Reds. Well I got a just-size Red so the monkey was off my back. Was a great day with awesome weather. We came home with a good mixed bag Rankin, Baldy, Spangos, Pearl Perch etc. Luke totally out fished us..........When we came back in the South passage was closing out a bit but still plenty of safe water to traverse
Rankin
Check out the teeth
By the time we clean and packed the fish and shower up it was getting late. We headed off for a meal with some of Lukes family and friends that were already at Coral Bay. They where kind enough to make us some dinner. To my surprise Paul and Luke were still powering along even after no sleep. Watched a bit of Tour de France then crashed ready for another day.
First up in the morning we hooked up the Simrad NSS12 under the bait board, then networked it my HDS10 ready to be tested and compared. How cool is this, I'm getting on water training by Paul on how to best use my Lowrance HDS10 and also get to see the latest Simrad. I have a new respect for my HDS10, its amazing what this sounder can do in the right hands. I was only using a small amount of its capabilities. Paul and Luke tweaked the settings and taught me a heap. As for the Simrad NSS12, I won’t bother going on about all the specs you can check them out online or call in and have a chat with the guys at Chivers but let’s just say I want one. If you're chasing a sounder check out both of these!!! Stay tuned I'll be putting up some screen shots shortly.
Anyway back to the fishing.
Day two we head for the south passage only to be greeted with breaking waves closing out the whole passage. Off to the north passage we go. Bit bouncy outside but seen it heaps worse. We decide to bottom bounce and then get some bloke come from nowhere to ping our spot, got to love these guys. Well he pinged a spot with no fish anyway.
We decide to have a crack at some billfish. We set out a spread of 3 skirts and a teaser. Remember that we are new to this, Luke had chased them once before the same as Paul but I've never had a go. Well we get a strike and I jump on the rod and go about stuffing it all up. Mixed feeling, we raised a fish so that’s a plus.
We go again hoping to do better, well what happened next no one could have imagined. Two rods go off at once, cricky double hook up on sails. I'm on to one hoping like hell not to stuff this one up and Paul is on the other. Luke jumps on the last rod to wind it in - 3 meters from the back of the boat a large saily engulfs his skirt in plain sight. Help...Triple hook up! My sailfish bolts straight for the boat and with no one at the helm to drive away from the fish my line goes slack and I’ve lost it. While all this is going on Paul loses his, so it's all up to Luke. We use the boat to our advantage and after a lengthy battle we landed Lukes sailfish for a photo. We revive it and with a good kick it’s off to live another day. High fives all round.
Lukes sail heads for the horizon
We set the spread again all pumped up. As we cruise around I get to think about the year so far, who would have thought that I would have just done a trip to the Kimberley then follow it up with a trip like this. When I brought this boat I knew that it had opened up some more options as to where I fish but never did I think it would be so versatile. Creek fishing in the Pilbara one week, then living aboard for a week in the Kimberley to chasing sails off Coral Bay. If I ever doubted whether buying this boat was the right thing the last few months has proved it to be the right decision. I should take the time to mention that not only has the boat been better then I hoped for but the customer service is second to none. If you're chasing a new boat give the Chivers guys a call. I know this sounds like a plug for their business well I guess it is to some extent but it's hard not after the service they have given and the quality of boat they build. PM me if you want more info.
Anyway back to fishing. We troll around chasing some more billfish while spending a heap of time testing the Simrad. It’s cool to be able to look at both screens and compare data. Note: to give you some idea how good these sounders we seen fish on them and comment that it looked big enough to be a marlin and within seconds we hooked up!!!
I manage to hook up on marlin, half way thought the battle I lose the top eye from my rod, not good. The mono is not in good shape so I go a bit harder and get the marlin close enough for the Luke to grab the leader, but it still had a heap of life and the lure fails and we get the skirt back minus the hook. I’m claiming this one as a capture with the boys backing.
Throughout the day we see whales everywhere with some coming very close, maybe too close. A pair of small whales hang around the boat for over one hour, very cool.
If things weren’t going good enough already while having a break from trolling, I lose a rig with fish attached and Luke manages to land a fish but at the same time land my rig and fish I lost earlier. Not many sharks either!!!
We get back just in time to go out for a meal at the cafe. We start the with an entree of Red Emperor wings caught by Lukes family and friends done in cajun spices. Had a great meal and shared stories of the days adventure.
We head out the North passage again on day 3 our last day before we head our separate ways. We have been taking it in turns and today is Paul’s turn to land a billfish. The day starts out fairly rough, we head out a fair way past the reef to ensure we don’t hit a school of Mackerel. We set the spread and set out for a troll to the ground we had so much luck on the day before. Not long until the drag screams and after a good fight Paul lands a Wahoo. Another species down and more to come. Next up he lands a Dolphin fish which we put on ice for the guys back at the caravan park.
Well Paul gets a cracker marlin on and it puts on a hell of a fight. These fish go off when hooked, jumping and tail walking, quite the spectacular. Paul’s line manages to jump of the roller tip and wedge itself down the side of the roller which causes him to lose the fish right near the boat. Had we had the correct leader on this we would have landed this fish also. I'm calling this a capture also.
We lost a heap of fish due to inexperience and being under gunned, but most our failures were between the mono and the skirt............I guess we will be doing some research into the correct knots and rigging of our gear.
We finish day 3 up the pub telling stories of the days tales then a good meal.
Sunday we pack up and head in different directions. Luke and Paul head for Perth with my boat in tow and I head off for the 760km drive home.
Summing it all up, I had the best 3 days fishing of my life, learnt so much and made some life long friends. Pretty cool to think that 3 guys from opposite parts of Australia can meet up and have 3 days no one will ever forget. It was all too easy; we fished together like we have been fishing together for years. Think only 2 weeks earlier we had no plans.
Big thanks to Luke and Paul for putting on a great trip
Who knows what the rest of the year will bring, hope you enjoyed the read.
Chris

Submitted by PilbaraBrad on Sun, 2011-07-24 14:40G'day guys and gals
well after six years i am leaving the Pilbara. I have a fantastic job opportunity over in the Queensland Gas industry. I love this place an honestly didnt think this day would come as soon as it has.
Ill be sure to keep you intune with the new adventures that i will get myself into once i am on the east coast
had some very memorable times, seven trips to the montebello's, numerous barra trips to remote creeks some with some pretty dodgy characters
I have attached a few photos of some of the people i have met and fished with along the way, thanks! it has been great!

Xmas in July...in Dampier
Submitted by Dicko on Fri, 2011-07-22 09:09G'Day all, thought I'd share some of my July conquests. Been blessed with some kick-ass weather lately and have done ok with the fish.
Went out with our dive gear early in the month and me and my mate made a decision to find new ground, and not give in and go to any spots we'd normally go. Well that proved productive, found a good area with small bombies everywhere, unusually, I shot all the fish and Dan got all the crays....teamwork!!
We got a great feed! PS: Terrible shot on the bigger Bluebone, forgot to take off the safety, spooked him and ended up being a wild shot!!!
Last weekend, went for a Shark bash and once the lines were set, we got stuck into some serious Chinaman's!!! We got 5, smallest was 84cm, biggest was 92cm. They sure pulled some string in 7-8m of water!!! All of them released well.
Yesterday, a work mate and I hit up Bare Rock in the arvo armed with plastics and small metal jigs to see what it would produce, 2 nice Cobia in about 15mins found their way into my mate's freezer!
Looks like more good weather on the way too! Got got a weekend of nightshift to get through first.
