Dogs and blowfish don't mix well
Submitted by Alan James on Tue, 2023-01-31 17:08My neighbours returned this morning from a few days holidaying at Jurien Bay. The sad news was that 'Jackson' their border collie didn't survive the trip. Very sad, he was a lovely dog. Whilst fishing with their two young children from a jetty / wharf Jackson ate one or more dead blowfish left on the wharf. It proved fatal. The family is understandably devastated.
Be careful with your treasured pets everyone.

Scottys Lures- Cherabin lures
Submitted by NORUN NOFUN on Sun, 2023-01-29 11:27Thought you guys might enjoy seeing my new lures.
Based on the freshwater prawns or cherabin as more commonly known.
Made from Jarrah and camphor laurel.
All the terminals, tow points, twisted wire, legs and antennae are heat treated stainless steel for that colour change.
Pretty much worn out my fingers with hand sanding.
I love the look, kinda scary and glad these things do not grow to 6ft lol.
Cheers

Mandurah boat crash
Submitted by sea-kem on Mon, 2023-01-23 18:37Let me preface this post with my full respect and condolences to those deceased.
But FFS I'm absolutely shaking my head at the reported cicumstances of this crash.
No nav lights , speed and more than likely alcohol involved but not proven (yet)
This bloke has not only maimed himself but killed two women in the process, imo should have the book thrown at him when he gets well. There's no excuse.
From what locals have described there's Fwits speeding up that river at night all the time, where's the water police. They're happy to ream rec fishos at the ramp and fine this shit out of anyone for out of date flares but something like this is serious shit.
IMO in this day and age it should be mandatory to have a GPS on board for any night inshore/river navigation.
It harks back to that flog Woolard who slammed into a Nav marker on the Swan, he got off with a suspended sentence. I guess being well connected helps in this world.

Sunday out in the tub
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Mon, 2023-01-23 18:06Hit the water at around 5:30 but could only be out for the morning . Turned out to be great conditions and should have gone out further. All fish that were kept other than the shark were in the esky by 10 but we kept going to try and get Sandy a trout but no luck. Lots of size but small black snapper were released to fight another day.
The mckie was a real shock , dropping my whole whiting bait down and all of a sudden my line was s reaming off . Thaught I had been sharked. I got the good sized trout and a damn big stink fish . Gees they go bloody hard. We called the last drift so I started cleaning the boat down and had just finished when sandys line went ballistic , she struggled with it a bit then handed it to me and after about a 10 minuit fight we had a Nice size shark on the end of the gaffe . More cleaning to be done. All up was a great day with some nice fish and great conditions

Got lucky
Submitted by Swompa on Mon, 2023-01-23 07:04Seems i got lucky here.
I did wonder why the trailer got extra squeaky around 700km ago....
We were planning to drive from Hopetoun to West River through the national park but the 'road' was so shitty (worse than Ningaloo Station track), 10km of currogations in, hoping it would get better, we turned around and went back the way we came. I am very glad we did.

Saturday beach session
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sat, 2023-01-21 14:28Headed down to the bank this morning at around 8 with the incoming tide. First up was to get a bit of live bait and as I was walking down to the water I saw a baby turtle belly up . Thinking it was dead but it then moved so I picked it up took a quick pic and set it free. Managed a few live bait so out the lines went . Saw the baby turtle swim past so I have given it a chance . Live baits didn't last too long , after loosing a couple on good runs but no hookup I finally managed a nice trevally and shortly after on another line I hooked a shovel nose that gave me one hell of a workout even tho it wasn't that big. Hook out and off it went.
More livies needed , this time I nailed a few gars which resulted in a couple of good runs and a couple of reasonable sharks landed. Yet again more livies needed. Lost a couple to crabs and scored a queenie that was jumping up to 6 foot out of the water and as it got close to shore I could see why it didn't want to stay in the water , with a 5 foot shark on its tail it was going nuts . Think I would too. Packed up and off to fillet the spoils of the 3 hour session

peace and serenity disturbed
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Tue, 2023-01-10 16:22Had most of the day off today so as usual it was time to hit the beach.
The day started with hardly a breath of wind and rain clouds off in the distant. It was that quiet you could hear your own footsteps in the sand. Not too much action for most part apart from the usual whiting and a small shark.
It soon changed tho. First a 4 foot shovel nose picked up my bait and after a short fight and hook removed it swam off strong. Not long after one of my lines was screaming off , a good 15 minuit fight I had a 6 to 7 kg trevally on the beach. Quick release and line back in the water. Not more than 10 minutes went by and another rod going nuts . 10 minuits later a golden trevally of similar size landed on the beach. This time it was going in the esky. All up had a great day chilling on the beach

Pacemaker Refurb
Submitted by Swompa on Tue, 2023-01-10 12:28Howdy All,
Well it all started a few months ago in a different thread but finally we finshed the refurb.
Like all other works I have done on the boat, they have taken longer and cost a lot more than I had anticiapted. This time the plan was to sand, patch, prime and paint the outside. Simple and should only take a couple of weeks, surely....
Well the knocks, dings and scratches under the boat were very wide spread as the repair work had never been done and there was some delamination that just seemed to keep going and going that took a good month to get perfect after just giving up on trying to dry and patch and ending up cutting a large chunk of keel out and laying up 8 or so layers of fiberglass 450gsm - arguably now the strongest part of the boat.
The sanding took about 40 hours to get it ready for priming. We took it back to gelcoat and then primed and sanded. Then primed and sanded and finally, for something different, primed and sanded.
Learning how to spray paint meant that the top coat was pretty average so again, we fully sanded the boat and painted....then i had to patch up some spots that didnt turn out perfect....so we sanded and painted now to a point where the boat is exceptionally smooth and looks schmick.
With the outside done, the boss said 'the outside makes the inside looks shit'....so we stripped the inside, removed all deck fittings, bogged, sanded, bogged, sanded and fiberglassed, covering every piece of timber with epoxy before priming and painting. The gunnel is now painted with non slip paint, the console in white epoxy and the deck is primed and painted ready for the foam to go back on.
We managed to get it out on Christmas day and thankfully it floated!
Two things i learnt: The kings 6m gazebo works as a great spray booth....and the boat is actually 5.6m not 6m. I lost 400mm along the way.

Evakool 40l fridge/freezer draw feedback
Submitted by Alpha on Sat, 2023-01-07 11:23Hi Gentlemen
I'm looking for some feed back on the evakool 40l fridge freezer draw?
I'm setting up a canopy for my ute and am looking at putting 1 of these in the back to replace my engel fridge.
I want to use it as a freezer more than a fridge and I can find quite a few reviews on them as a fridge but not as a freezer.
Does anyone have one and use it as a freezer and can give some honest feedback on them.
Thanks in advance.

Hacking, MyGov etc, beware
Submitted by Rob H on Fri, 2023-01-06 07:09Some general "beware" info, which has left me somewhat astonished.
The Commonwealth Gov posturing and lecturing on the Optus and Medibank data breaches seemed to me quite timely and a good thing, until I discovered the following over the last few weeks.
The hypocracy is quite astounding I think.
Note this is not intended as a sounding board for BlueK to pontificate on, its a general warning every tax payer who is compelled to use these systems.
Its probably best to remove the links to ATO, MyHealth etc and put them back when you actually need them next
MyGov have no interest in investigating either how someone was able to access MyGov without the MyGovID code from my phone, or why they did not inform either me or ATO that access had been successful
- 14/12/22. Received text from ATO that my details had been changed via MyGov and to phone 132861 if it wasn’t me. I had not been on MyGov for several months.
Also tried to contact my accountant but they were closed. - From that point to the 3rd Jan I tried to contact ATO without success, “too busy call later” etc and they are closed Xmas to New Year.
- 27/12/22 Checked MyGov to find it was “permanently locked” and I should open a new one, I started this process.
Spoke to MyGov helpline who told me there had been suspicious activity on my account, I asked why they did not inform me and they said “they don’t do that as it happens too many times”. - Once ATO opened, after an hour on hold I spoke to them and they said they did not send that text. After I insisted it looked genuine, they looked further and conceded they did in fact send it.
Had I not insisted, I would have been unaware of any of this until lodging my real Tax Return.
We then discovered that;
-a tax return had been submitted noting a $35K donation to boost it on the 13th Dec
-My accountant had been removed as my agent
-an ANZ bank account added as recipient (I have this account number)
-some other details changed. - While going thru the reporting process to ATO I was given two 13-digit reference numbers and several other references, I asked for all details to be emailed and they simply will not send or accept ANY emails even without personal details on, hence I have no written record that I have reported it for any claims on insurance.
They said they were blocking my accounts and I’d need to request access for 48hrs (as well as my accountant), I asked how long for and was told “probably forever”
This is patently untrue as I had reported to them I was included in the Svitzer/Maersk data breach a few years back and yet here we are again? - I contacted MyGov again and asked;
-Did you notify ATO of this breach? “No we don’t do that”.
-What other services of mine were accessed via MyGov? “We don’t give out that information”
-How do I submit a written complaint or feedback about MyGov? “Umm there is no way to do this”.
-What are my rights if my money is taken and not recoverable due to your data breach? "we should be able to get it back" (yeah right...) - ATO also told me that Bank Account must be in my name, or they would not pay the refund into it (I don’t believe this is actually correct as refunds get paid into all sorts of accounts of Tax Agents etc)
Obviously this would very concerning as it would mean they have 100 points of my ID to open the account. - I contacted ANZ to report that the account may be in my name but even if it wasn’t, it was being used for fraud.
They would give no help, were not interested in that account at all, would not take its details and said there was no action they would take as I had not lost any money-yet… - I lodged a request with IDCARE which said they would contact me “shortly”-took 2 days to respond.
- I placed a ban on my Credit Report
- I checked my ATO account 4 hours after reporting all this, the account was still open, refund “pending”, fake account details in there, no changes made.
So I called them again and escalated it, then it was blocked.
Accountant changed the bank account back to my own, in hindsight we should have left it but I have recorded this number.

good start to 2023
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Mon, 2023-01-02 16:04The way the wind has been blowing it has been hard to get out. We saw a windows on new years day to get out so that was it. Up at 4 and on the water by 5:30 but with a bit of residual swell it took us about hour and a half to get out 17nm . Finally lines were in the water about 7 but the fish just didn't want to play very well. First area resulted in 4 blacks in about 8 drifts trying to provoke the fish that were showing to take the bait. Very frustrating. We decided on 1 more drift in the area then move on. As Sandy hadn't had a lot of sleep after finishing work at 9:30 on new years eve she dozed off with rod in hand . All of a sudden both our rods doubled over at the same time which woke Sandy up real quick . Thinking it was a shark that took our lines but after a bit of a fight I managed to subdue what was on my line and up came a nice size golden trevally. Sandys line was still peeling out as she was struggling and handed it to me. After another 5 minuits up came another big golden trevally (bigger than mine lol).
We then moved on looking for a nice flare up which I found with a bit of driving around. Next 2 drifts resulted in 4 nice size blacks breaking the surface then a damn sand snapper.
Took I bit more time to get the next 2 fish as the drift had changed , wind going one way and current going the other it was a bit frustrating with the boat spinning around in circles. Last to fish came aboard after a bit of time and we had bagged out by 11:15 . Quick clean up of the boat and we headed in with the wind and swell chasing us all the way in .
All up we had a great day out and just hope it won't be that long before the next session

insulation question (icebox)
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Thu, 2022-12-22 11:24Silly season silly question time
My boat has a built in icebox/livewell in the cockpit - it sits (drops in to) in a moulded section of the bulkhead and as such has a gap around it (between the box and the fibreglass bulkhead moulding 50ish mm) it is under the rear shade and rarely gets sun but will only hold ice for about a day - my question - would filling the void (i can get to it from underneath) with expanding foam ex bunnings help? - i assume it would but given once its done it would be a nightmare to remove - thought i would ask the experts :-)
cheers

morning session
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Tue, 2022-12-20 12:16Had the morning off so off to the beach for a bit of r&r .lost a nice size shark with it biting through wire trace and lost a metre long queenie with it jumping madly . Lots of good hits as well. Still got a feed with what I kept. Trev and queenie both gill hooked so kept.
Measure twice, cut once....but send the right package!
Submitted by Swompa on Mon, 2022-12-19 09:18After months and months of work on the boat, she is getting very very close to splashing again.
Wife and I put the gunnel rubber on over the weekend. What a shit of a job that took 5 hours, 91 screws and two tubes of sikaflex.....
The biggest pain in the arse is that Bias only sent us 11.7m, when i ordered 14m but needed 12. We only discovered when we were half way down the final seretch....
I have waited 24 hours to send a more dimplomatic email rather than explosives...
I can only assume they had two orders and i got the wrong one, after 4 weeks of postage.
Tip for anyone doing the project, measure the material before you start applying black sikaflex.
