Mayday off Northern Suburbs
Submitted by Iceman on Wed, 2013-07-17 00:47Received a call about 8.00pm advising Mayday had been recieved at Water Police Base of the northern suburbs. headed to Hillarys to man one of the boats. Ended up crewing on the new police bo0at. Our vessel stayed in Hillarys as backup
Last known position of EPIRB was at Alkimos reef. Man was found by our volunteers in cars on the beach near Pippidinny safe and well. Yacht lost as well as his dog.
Not sure why he was out there in this will probably know more tomorrow.
Conditions were shit with 50kn squalls and 5-6 mtr seas. Had a couple of close calls but home safe now.
This guy needs to be in Graylands for assessment.

Maxx Trax wanted to borrow
Submitted by Scaly Man Fish on Tue, 2013-07-16 13:31Yea , I know its a big ask but if someone has a set I could borrow for a few days.
I am heading of to Jurien for a few days , and I am not the most experienced four wheel driver as I very rarely get the opportunity, hence I do not really want to shell out the $$$ for something I may use once in a blue moon.
Im south of the river but heading north to Jurien Bay this Thursday morning

Solar panels + inverter for house
Submitted by bradz on Tue, 2013-07-16 13:07Hi guys
It has been discussed before but I cant find what I was looking for.
I have been given some quotes for a 3kw set up for our house for around $4500 to $5000. However, the inverters do not appear to be ones that held in high regard, and the panels arent alot better.
Can anyone recommend a company that deals with reputable inverters (eg. SMA, Aurora) and quality panels.
Happy to hear your comments as well.
Cheers
Brad

Insurance Thoughts & Questions
Submitted by terboz123 on Mon, 2013-07-15 14:11All
I have a insurance question and would like the forums point of view:
basically two years ago, I had some rocket launchers fabricated. The fabricator was relatively well known. I did my research and they fabricate ali boats regular from a recreational to commercial level.
Well any oo, some of you may of seen my boat and its white rocket holders. Well roughly two months ago, I was at chivers marine (not the company that built the rocket holders) and we were doing some work on the tub. They noticed these welds cracking. I asked to do a temp fix asap, as I was leaving to Exmouth for a month 3 days later.
Chivers advised me that the design of the launchers wasn't satisfactory, and the use of 20mm ALI tube should never of been done. It should of been fabricated in 40 at the minimum.
Anyhoo cut the long story short, we were driving to exxy @ 90 k and hour, and one of the welds fully cracked through.
Over the next two weeks we kept on doing temp repairs, till it got to the point it wasn't safe having the holders on the boat, and heading offshore generally into some rough seas. We proceeded to agree it was more safe just to cut them off.
Now here's the deal, I am trying to claim this on insurance, what is every ones thoughts?
I had a inspector come out late last week, and I was getting the vibe the claim most likely will be refused. ( I could be wrong hope so!)
I did submit to the insurance company, the Manufacture , dates it was built ( two years ago)......
a couple of questions and would love to here peoples thoughts:
A) It sounds like the insurance company could possibly reject this due to manufacturing....how the hell can I go back to a company of over two years ago and say this shouldn't of happened, fix it!
B) Do you guys honestly think this is a claim?
I will not name the insurance company nor the fabricator on the internet.
thanks.

Gnaraloo round trip
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sat, 2013-07-13 21:31Did a run up to Gnaraloo from Carnarvon nd back today to mark all the spots where people have made a habit of falling in while rock fishing and to plot the way in to Gnaraloo bay in case we have the need to come in there in an emergency situation. This allows us to go straight to a spot even though some of us have never been there by sea before without the need to search for its location.
Took a few snaps on the way, the usual Cape Cuvier, The Caves, Red Bluff from the south and the bluff before it and a few from near the beach in Gnaraloo bay. Meant to get some of Whistling and High Rock but the sun was wrong and we forgot on the return trip
Total time was 7 hours to cover approx. 150nm and an about 450 litres of fuel. Wind was next to bugger all and swell 2-3 metres, something to give the surfers at Red Bluff and the 3 mile camp some fun.

Not like me
Submitted by davidbland50 on Sat, 2013-07-13 19:11I am not one to complain but what gets my goat is when a business treats every one like a potential thief.
Rang All Boats today to see if I could hire or borrow the outboard template to drill the holes to mount my new (second hand) Mercury to the engine stand I have erected. They initially, were okay with that and so long as I could give them a deposit, I could pick it up today and return it Monday. Making sure that an imprint of a credit card was okay, I proceeded down to pick it up.
When I arrived, they had changed their tune and required a cash deposit and when I asked how much, the young bloke said $300!!! He explained this was to ensure I brought it back as they had had problems with other people in the past.
Dishonesty. There's the pot calling the kettle black, I purchased a Johnson outboard from them which ended up having an overheating problem. They charged me to repair a wiring harness saying this was the problem, and when it didn't, I was able to diagnose the problem being the faulty temp sensor. They wanted to charge me for that as well. So who is the honest one?
They knew me as a customer, they knew I was good for my word and yet they treated me like I was a thief. Well congratulations, All Boats, as far as I am concerned that is the last time you will see me in your store. I have worked hard all my life to be respected and trusted. I do not like to be treated that way and it is not the way I treat customers where I work and that happens to be in the same line of work as All Boats.

The Derby
Submitted by Justo82 on Thu, 2013-07-11 14:57Massive derby coming up on sunday...
who's going to the game?
who are you tipping?
Either way should be a really close one with both teams in good form, and both with a lot to play for. Freo for a top 4 finals berth and for WCE a top 8 finish on the cards.
Key defenders out for both teams, WCE with the definite ruck advantage (only if Nic Nat plays), Freo with the better midfield. Should be a high pressure, low scoring affair.. haha
looking forward to sitting on the couch on sunday with a few coldies...

Calling diesel mechanics
Submitted by AlwaysFishin on Tue, 2013-07-09 11:07Hi guys, I have a 2000 Hilux that has served me well, but just recently it has started misbehaving a little and I have the mechanical knowledge of a retarded cat, so I'm hoping someone a little more mechanically gifted than I can offer me some explanations.
When I start it first thing in the morning, it stutters, farts and coughs so much it feels like the doors are gonna fall off and blows white smoke. Give it some juice for a few seconds and it settles down, but still vibrates intermittently with a dull like thud coming from the engine bay. Usually the white smoke disappears once the engine reaches operating temperature, although it does show up at idle from time to time, but it blows a pretty thick black smoke under throttle/load.
It doesn't appear to be using any oil, coolant or excessive fuel, but it seems like it might be misfiring or have knackered glow plugs. I'm hoping its something simple like glow plugs and not a cracked head or blown gasket. Can anyone share their thoughts on this please?

12V 240V Portable Fridge repairer recommendations Balcatta and surrounding area
Submitted by Escape on Mon, 2013-07-08 10:07Hi everyone,
My no name cheapy 12v / 240v portable fridge has finally decided to get a little unreliable and is deciding when it wants to switch on and off.
Mostly have it plugged into the boat via shore power and that power circuit is ok.
Any recommendations on a repairer NOR prferably close to Hillarys or Balcatta?
Much appreciated.

Round 15
Submitted by big john on Sat, 2013-07-06 09:56Great win against the Blues and all the haters coming after us, especially after being 7 goals to 2 down in the first quarter. Seven of the eight youngest blokes on the field a good sign for next year and beyond. Young finally played and Beams and Moneybags coming back in through the two's this round. 3 highly winnable games immediately to come. Still a sniff for the top four.
Hawks vs Cats tonight, what do you reckon?
Crows vs Eagles, season ending stuff for someone, again what do you reckon?
Hey Dizzy, crank us up another one of your great memes!

Expression of Interest
Submitted by davidbland50 on Fri, 2013-07-05 13:09Hi everyone,
Have to drive up to Carnarvon next week (leaving Wednesday morning) with an empty trailer on the back. Any one have anything they need taking up there, within reason, pm me and we can see what we can agree on.
Also, will be heading back Thursday but the trailer will be hopefully full with a Mercury outboard! More than happy to accomodate a parcel or two coming back. Let me know.
I will say though, the trip may not go ahead as unfortunately, my father is going in for open heart surgery on Monday and this may have to be sidelined if the worst happens.
Cheers.

4WD Choices ($15k - $20k)
Submitted by deanot on Tue, 2013-07-02 14:54Hi Guys,
I had a bit of a search on the forums already and got a few ideas, but wanted to throw this out for any up to date info.
I'm looking to pickup a second hand 4WD around $15k - $20k, i'm planning on using it predominately for getting down to a few beach fishing spots, within the next couple of years I want to get my first boat as well - so ideally something that could also tow a 5 - 6m glass boat.
I don't really want one with an open tray on the back, the car won't always be garaged and i'd prefer not to have to empty everything out of a tray that I don't want stolen constantly.
At the moment i'm looking at 2003~ model Landcrusier Prado and Pajero. The Pajero's seem to be a bit cheaper with lower Kms from initial looks.
Also, given the vehicle has been serviced regularly and on schedule - what kind of Km's should I be considering and what could I reasonably expect out of a 4WD. And is a used 4WD thats only ever seen the city something good to look at?
Any buying tips, model suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
Cheers,
Deano

Don't mess with this lobster
Submitted by jigsaw on Mon, 2013-07-01 13:40
This giant lobster has avoided being the catch of the day in a seafood restaurant due to his huge size and an impressive age of at least 60. He will be looked after at a local acquarium before being returned to the ocean. He is rare because of his age, size and abnormally large crushing claw.

The meat on the senior lobster would be too tough to eat due to his age.
