Rottnest mooring
Submitted by davewillo on Thu, 2022-04-14 11:35Just wondering if there are any FW members with a mooring at Rotto they are prepared to have another user on? We've been allocated one in Thompsons and one at Narrowneck and both are used most of the time so not much use to us. The one at Narrowneck is a cracker but the guy virtually lives there in the season!
Happy to work out an arrangement if anyone is keen to help.
Cheers

Covid in the house
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Wed, 2022-04-13 12:36Writing these Covid observations as I sit here watching my three kids sprawled on the couch watching youtube
I returned a positive RAT test Monday night after returning from an 8km run and being a bit sniffly and the Mrs insisting I use one. I was completely surprised at the result as I felt fine otherwise. Since then I've had two of my kids return a positive test last night and one that is very sick but returned a negative test.
Myself (thrice vaxed) history of chronic asthma and chest infections spending a lot of my youth in hospital (twice with pneumonia) but otherwise very fit am absolutely fine with a bit of a tickle in my throat. The Mrs and I did an hour kickboxing session on the pads last night and I'd love to go for a run if I was allowed.
The Mrs (thrice vaxed) has been constantly exposed to me around the house, same bed, bathroom etc, kissing the kids and helping clean up their vomit all with no mask and has no symptoms and is testing negative.
Oldest son 12 (unvaxed) went downhill extremely quickly yesterday afternoon and tested positive. Very listless with a slight temperature, headaches, chills and aches and has vomiting a few times throughout the night and into the day.
Middle son 9 (unvaxed) went downhill extremely quickly yesterday afternoon and tested negative and again at night. Listless with a fever and a high temperature, sore stomach, chills and has been vomiting constantly throughout the night and into the day. Our best friend is an ER nurse so she's giving us advice on treating him at home and when to consider taking him in if required.
Daughter 7 (unvaxed) tested positive with no symptoms. Vomitted once during the night, listless with a headache and no temperature and just vomited again.
Thankfully we've got great neighbours and my folks around the corner so just had a pile of stuff dropped off including hydralyte, kid's panadol and nurofen, some icepoles, easter eggs, more RATS and a carton of Asahi for us to enjoy when the kids recover.
Absolutely spewing as we had tomorrow and Friday pegged to take the boys out for a good demersal bash before heading down to Hopetoun with my folks to see my brother's family but hopefully we'll make up for lost time the second week of the school hols if some accomodation pops up.

Pissed off in Iso
Submitted by carnarvonite on Mon, 2022-04-11 10:33Felling very bored and thoroughly pissed off.
Was supposed to be holidaying down at Augusta with the family , who have come down from Exmouth for their usual yearly salmon catching adventure, but are stuck in isolation after missus tested positive Saturday morning after we all gathered for tea on Friday night. So we have 2 households sitting back twiddling our thumbs for the next 7 days.
At least the owners of the holiday house have refunded 100% of our booking fees even at 24 hours notice that we won't be coming so it a big thank you to Sandra and Errol.
Retested myself this morning and still negative but with the way the missus is I would expect its only a matter of time before the 2 red lines appear

A couple of pilbara trout
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sat, 2022-04-09 19:07Got out for a bash today with the plan to do a bit of exploring . The winds weren't as good as predicted but still fishable. First area we tried held some small blue lined and managed a dark tail . Final drift in that area resulted in my first legal trout.
Moved out a bit further looking for some ground with no luck. Having a look on the g p s i decided to head in a bit to some ground that i would like to try out . On the way we same across a nice lump in the middle of no man's land that was holding fish .
Spun the boat around setting up a drift . In the end after 4 drifts over the area we nailed some nice size blue lined and another nice trout . Sandy also got a just legal trout that we returned to fight another day. Had a classic catch today , I hooked up to a fish of a decent size but unfortunately I was bitten off , within a few seconds Sandy hooked up to a nice fish That turned out to be a good size blue lined and there was my hook in its top lip. The bugger must have been hungry.

C Map image no more secrets
Submitted by sea-kem on Tue, 2022-04-05 20:47Thought I'd throw this Cmap image up as the ground looks bloody interesting.
Our drift lines are in 100m to the north where we caught the below.
I'm very keen to see how these "holes" read on the sounder as I only installed the card after the last trip up there. By the scale on the GPS not small either, even the ripples above look to be holding good lumps.
The ripples themselves are literally on the 100m contour line.

Found some fish second trip
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2022-04-03 18:42Headed out at around 8:30 as the tide was quite low and couldn't launch earlier. Went out to similar area as 1st trip with no luck so we went exploring and found an area with a decent lump showing fish.
1st drift I got a legal black snapper and Sandy out did me with a double of black snapper and Spanish flag on the same set of snelled hooks. A few more drifts around the same are produced some more black snapper and a couple more Spanish flag. Sandy got a reasonable black snapper and I got a nice cod to finish it off. Wind came in so we called it a day . Happy to get out there and get a few fish for the fryer

First boat trip out from hedland
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sat, 2022-03-26 16:33Was planning on hitting the water around 6 but as usual plans change. Not knowing anything about out here I was told to try marker number 24 . Ended up with 2 trout , one at 350 the other 400 so they went back strong. And of course I managed one of my usual catches , a shark.
The ramp is a bit on the steep side but pulled the boat out no probs

Pilbara boating
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Mon, 2022-03-21 20:11Now that we have e our boat up in hedland we need to get to know the winds and so forth.
What are the best winds to be fishing out of hedland. All new to us up here so it's going to be hit or miss with the grounds for the fish.
Any help would be great .

Freeing up aluminium tube seized in tube (SeaKem?)
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Mon, 2022-03-14 08:54hi guys
Aluminium question ... (anodised alum if that makes any difference)
THe back stay for my outriggers has a tube the slides inside a larger tube (shown below) - the idea being you can lower them by removing a locking pin to get under bridges etc
THe back stays have been sat on their sides for a few years and the tubes appear seized/corroded together.
Any ideas on what i can do to free them up
Heat?
Acetone and brake fluid?(found online..)
cheers

Australia cricket legend and the greatest leg-spinner of all-time, Shane Warne, has died, aged 52.
The 708-Test wicket great was found unresponsive by friends in a villa he was staying at in Koh Samui, Thailand.
Warne’s management released a brief statement in the early hours of Saturday (AEDT) saying that he passed away of a suspected heart attack.
“Shane was found unresponsive in his villa and despite the best efforts of medical staff, he could not be revived,” the statement reads.

Mixed bag
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2022-03-02 16:20Bit shitty out pulling the pots this morning but bringing back 3 x southerns and 1 western cray makes it all worthwhile.
Consider the southerns by far the better eating cray by for so not complaining with recent results

Interesting Catch
Submitted by carnarvonite on Tue, 2022-03-01 16:01Got an interesting one yesterday, good size southern cray with its face chewed off. Never seen anything like it before after catching literally hundreds as a rec fisher and tonnes as a pro, all legs were gone but head and tail still full of meat.
Occies will usually get in from under the tail and suck the head and tail dry but nothing like this. Should have taken a pic but didn't want to risk getting the phone wet because it was rather sloppy with the sea breeze cranked right up and didn't want to bring a half eaten cray in

Drum anchor winches - latest opinions??
Submitted by straith on Mon, 2022-02-28 13:39Hey all,
just trolling through all the old posts regarding drum anchor winches,
has anything changed in recent years engineering/tech wise??
also interested in peoples personal experiences, good and bad if they fitted one in last cpl years
my rig is a 5.6 mtr fg hydrofield trihull so pretty heavy and most of my research has leaning to either a viper or lonestar.

fibreglass boat builder / shipwright recommendations?? sor
Submitted by straith on Wed, 2022-02-23 15:20hey guys,
just looking to do some upgrades on the old hydrofield regarding bilge placements and new storage compartments and possibly auto anchor fitting.
Im not confident enough to do anything myself when it comes to cutting and pasting fg so Im looking for recommendations for honest competent and hopefully smaller owner operator businesses if any?
I know of Cobaltblue in naval base but wondering about peoples experiences with any others south of the river.
I see Epic mandurah permanently closed according to website??
Anyway ill throw it open to the forum.

Abrolhos consultation link-lack of interest?
Submitted by Rob H on Mon, 2022-02-21 23:16Seems to be a bit of a lack of interest in this-not a single comment about what may be proposed?
It would take about the same time and effort as to write about 3 replies on the Footy thread
Unfortunately later when we get hit with adverse fees, hurdles and restrictions, theres a chorus of
"BUT WE DIDNT KNOW"
"THEY SNEAKED THAT THRU QUIETLY"
"THEY'RE SO DEVIOUS..."
"THEY NEVER CONSULTED ME"
And so forth-you now have about 4 days to absorb and have your say-suffice to say these reviews NEVER result in more access, easier access, or reduced fees and limits.
Those that have been on here a while, will know that I have a special place in my heart for the Abrolhos Islands, for a variety of reasons certainly not only all about fishing.
Below is the link to participate in the consultation process.
I am not naive enough to think youre input will change anything much, but I certainly know the the LACK OF INPUT will give free range for those with ideas different to yours.
I haven't taken my boys there for over a year, and they are just now starting to realise that its not normal to experience what they had taken for granted.
New boat on the way, links below to some of my old threads for those interested

A good day
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2022-02-20 17:41 Good fun out on the bank today. Not a whole lot of fish but hooked up to 3 big sharks which gave me a good run and when you see a 10 foot bronzie jump vertically out of the water you know your hooked up big time. Several other good runs and ended with 3 sharks around the 70 to 80 cm range a trevally that went about 90 that gave me a good run for the money also a 80 cm queenie to finish the day off

Processing a shark for those interested
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sat, 2022-02-19 19:17I remember seeing John explaining how to process a shark.
The way I do it it only takes about a minutia long as the knife is sharp.
I will explain what I do the the pics.
Sitting the shark trunk on its belly I remove both fins but with the dorsal I remove the skin all the way.
Flipping the trunk over I remove the rear fin then the anal fins but I take the entire belly flap off at the same time.
With the trunk still on its back I just run the knife all the way down one side of the spine and with the skin gone from in front of the dorsal fin it cuts easily all the way down.
I then put the trunk on its side inserting the knife under the spine and cut all the way along .
After that all that's left to do is remove the small amount of stomach lining , a quick trim where the fins were then skin the fillets

Cockburn Floaters
Submitted by Swompa on Fri, 2022-02-18 09:43Howdy Folks,
Part of the Kwinana bulk jetty has 'liberated' and there are large pieces of timber washing up along the naval base horse beach. We noticed a few larger pieces (like railway sleeper sized) floating past the window yesterday.
I have rerported it to Freo Ports and they are going to clean up the beach and I have also reported it to Cockburn Sea Rescue though if you are out in the sound on the weekend, just keep your eyes open.
