FIFO airlines

Well I know a lot of guys on here work FIFO, so I'm interested to know a few things partly for study and partly for my own knowledge:

What airline do you fly with to get to your mine? (more interested in the smaller regional and charter companies)
What is the destination airport?
And finally, do any of you fly out of jandakot as a hub to get to your place of employment?

Cheers guys, look forward to hearing the answers.

Fess up to getting Bogged

Time for all of the fishos who haunt the beaches to fess up to getting bogged big time.

Mine was while pro fishing down round fromAugusta at Dead Finish, where the pro boats moor and unload Was 0500 in an early Hilux that someone had chucked a twin carb celica donk in it, it would rev well but had bugger all down low. Was towing the dinghy with 200 litre of fuel in containers plus about 50kg of ice, zipped down the beach and was about to dow a hard lefty to line the boat up with the only weed free patch of water when one bigger wave dumped what seem like 20 tonne of weed on to the trailer and with the sudden extra weight the engine died instantly, restarted and 1 st low , could,t even spin a wheel.

Unhooked the trailer and one decky managed to get the dinghy off and out to clear water but the trailer was completely buried in weed. Restarted again and peak revs and drop the clutch in low range in reverse, nothing, not even one wheel spun.

We managed to clear the trailer of weed and drag it up the beach but the poor Lux was getting a salt water bath.

Managed to get the boss on the phone after a 1/2 mile walk up the hill and he told us to go fishing and he would sort it out while we were gone.

Called the dinghy back in to collect us and we went out to pull the gear and return some 6 hours later to find that they had only just finished getting it out. 4 landcruisers and  200 metres of rope strung through the bush to the only straight section of track for them to get a run up. The bloke who hopped in the Lux said there was waves breaking over the top of it and one turn of the key and away it went.

When the boss had driven down he'd got his mate to bring my nissan down, just as well because we'd had a top day and filled it and some in to the bosses ute as well.

We drove the Lux round to the servo in Augusta and dropped it in for the mechanic to drain all the oils and check what else needed doing.

Dropped in for the verdict next arvo and he said the donk was that close to dying before I got to it and the bogging had killed it properly so it was hook a rope on and tow it home to Yallingup and drop a 186 in on the next set of rough days when we couldn't fish

Rod Lockers

Hi

Does anyone have a rod locker in a larger boat designed to carry larger outfits. I'm keen to see pics and hear pro & Cons.

I've seen some cracker setups in boats set up for chasing Barra etc but not on larger boats designed to head offshore.

Cheers in advance

Finding a Career

Firstly- there are heaps of good blokes on here and thanks for your time for reading this and your responses.

I'm 28 and sort of freaking out that i need to learn some new skills before i get to old. I have been working as a forkie/storeman for the last 7 years although the place i work at now pays well it's just permanent casual and the hours are up and down. I need to find a career! I possibly did the worst trade in the world when i was younger- Baker- Shit pay, shit hours. I would love to do another apprenticeship but I don't know if i can afford too after paying rent, child support, bills etc(it cost me 650-700 a week just to live).  I am mechanically minded and am not afraid of hard work and love a challenge. I'm not crazy about FIFO at the moment as my son is 2 and I don't want to miss out on things but would be interesed in doing something that leads to it. My cousin is trying to get a traineeship as a linesman with western power which sounds OK. I'm not expecting to walk into a sweet job and would be willing to tough it out money wise for a while.

So I ask... What could I do?

Thanks heaps, The Dude

anyone going out on the weekend

thinking about going out on the weekend any reports of wats around in the metro area

Mechanic NOR

I must admit I haven't tried a number of our sponsors but I am very pleased and therefore mentioning about Waterline Marine Mobile Mechanics. Cameron once again has come through with great service and reasonable price to get my boat ready for the up and coming Rottnest Safety Convoy Saturday week. This is the third time I have used him for work on my outboard and I certainly went away with confidence that the outboard will perform at its best until next time.

Thankyou Cameron, once again.

Patio, liquid limestone and a bit of building work - advice and some work for someone

We're looking at getting the back garden and entertaining area wiped out and starting again.

Does anyone have lquid limestone that has been down for a few years, I just wanted to know if it cracked badly, looked good still and what sealers have been used on it?

Also, if anyone knows people that build patios or does liquid limestone then we have a lot of work if someone wants it.

Limestone area is approx 176m nd the patio is a big one as well.

Anyone who can help is is interested in quoting then leave a message

Prawning Lights.

Hi Guys,

We're keen to give prawning from the boat a go this season, we have a pretty good idea of the areas to try in the Swan River and down at Mandurah but was wondering if any of you fellow fisho's might have any idea's/suggestions on a good light set up to run off both sides of the boat?

Cheers

Paul

Suzuki 4 Stroke Outboard Motors

G'day Lads,

Just a quick one, does anyone out there have one of the latest Suzuki 150-175 4 stroke outboards motors? I'm looking to buy a boat fitted with a 150. I have always been a Yamaha man and rate them highly. Can anyone out there vouch for the Suzuki? Any pro's-cons that I Should consider? Any advice appreciated!

Leaving a car in Carnarvon

Hi Guys,

I am a regular visitor to Quobba and Gnaraloo station a few times every year, love the place. I have a short wheel base Mitsubishi Pajero I want to leave in Carnarvon somewhere. It is a an old turbo diesel and a bit too slow to drive from Perth every time I go up. I am hoping to find a place where I could leave it under a tarp/car cover in or around Carnarvon and pay some storage fee. Does anyone out there know of someone's place I can leave a car somewhere out of the way on a property or something?????

1st Boat!

Yep thats right, the most seasick-prone person in the country has a bought a boat! Picked up this Bluefin Weekender 475 from a fellow FW member today. Went halves with a good mate and boy are we excited, we giggled like school girls all the way home with the boat in tow from Bunbury. Has been an exciting past 24hrs for myself after our offer on me and my partners first home was accepted just last night, Yay!

Ben and I will be heading out on Saturday morning from Woodies Point so come say Hi if you recognise the boat! We will probably have a blue bimini up.

Very exciting times ahead!!

Beau

ps. I'm still keeping the ski for solo/spur of the moment sessions so I havent totally joined the darkside, YET.

I have a problem. A friend has a general purpose spin combo that he lent me the other day when we headed up the coast a bit and found some blue water (we’re in Derby) and a few Tuna. I didn’t really have anything suitable, so he lent me his gear… a Saltiga 4500H on a Raider rod. I don’t remember the exact details of the rod but it was probably the Snapper 701. The combo was about the right size, nice, light, cast a feather jig a fair distance, was pretty well balanced and easily accounted for a few Tuna around the 8kg mark.

I thought at the time that I’d like to get something that could do a similar job and be the right size to be useful tossing lures from a boat and from the shore if needed. The problem is this; there’s no way I can afford a similar outfit. I really can’t justify spending more than $500 to try and compete with him but I want to try and get a spin combo that he’ll be a bit jealous of when he tries it.

There’s obviously nowhere to go in trying to match the Saltiga overall. I’m never going to get a reel with 15kg of drag. It’s got a ratio of 5.7, so I might be able to get something a little bit faster to inspire a bit of envy there, say a Stradic 4000/5000 (5.8) or a Saltist 4500 (6.1) or Ballistic 4000 (6.2). I don’t really know much about spin reels in general and these ones in particular but I wouldn’t want anything much bigger than his Saltiga. I’ve heard good things about the 5000 Saragosa, so maybe it would be better to get one of these (only 5.2) and forget trying to surpass him in any way on the reel.

While his Raider rod was fine and there’s nothing wrong with them, I see this as the obvious area that I could trump him in. I need a rod around 7ft or a little more that is lighter, will cast further, feel better and match up beautifully to one of the types of reels suggested above. Furthermore, I’m only up in Derby for another year, after which I return to Kalbarri, so I’d like the combo to be able to cope with tossing Roosta poppers and 65g slices around for big Tailor.

I’ll feel victorious if as the least I can inspire him to use my combo and then decide that he needs to upgrade his rod. If I can get him to admit that my gear is not bad considering it cost less than half the price of his, that would be good too. So any suggestions and advice in support of my childish goals would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mathew.

The fishing Ban.

The fishing ban is here to make us mad

To save the fish ,i bet their glad.

Most of the boats will be left high and dry.'

Its almost enough to make us all cry.

With all our fish comming from the freezer.

The shows on the box are just a teaser.

I dont know why we all complain.

When we go out and fish in the rain.

While the snapper and dhuies are all breeding.

There are none of these that are going to be bleeding.

With the esky's empty of fish and ice.'

Looks like we will all be eating rice.

Another two months the ban will be lifted.

The boats will hit the water with new devices fitted.

As the salt water dries up in the veins .

It is time to pick others brains.

As the fish are swimming all good and free.

On the 16th of december they all will flee.

Hope you all can be kept occupied.

While there is no fish that will be fried.

Full Time Position Available - Campbells Pro Tackle

 Hi guys

There is currently a full-time position at Campbells Pro Tackle in Leederville up for grabs. We are a team of keen, young fishos who are looking for another team member as a sales assistant. This is a great opportunity for those who love fishing and want to make a living through their love of fishing, no retail experience required (though preferred).

The position requires customer service, merchandising & stock control. Some saturdays and sundays will be required as we generally rotate through to be fair to everyone, however there is great flexibility in regards to fishing trips or holidays. I have learnt a hell of a lot from the guys here at the shop and we fish together regularly.

Email your resume into the store or pop in and see Nathan or James.

Conecting HDSx 5 to HDS 5 chartplotter

I've got a HDSX 5 and a HDS 5 Chartplotter. I have linked them using an NMEA cable and the ethernet cable. Since then my sounder imaging is playing up. I loose my depth indicator at times (my overlay data showing me the depth) and I loose my image. It comes and goes in patches.

Sometimes I have a solid bottom and doesn't show any bait or interference and then when it does show the correct information (bait, bottom growth ect) the substructure or the solid bottom signal that I had goes really light under the thin sea bed line that the sounder records as the bottom.

I have had help from the dealer where I purchased the units but something just isn't set to the correct settings. They are suggesting its my transducer but everything worked fine before the link up.

I have now put the transducer cable back into my Chartplotter, selected on my HDS5x to read from the chartplotter and have selected 2oo mhz for the transducer setting. I still need to launch the boat and give it a test run at these settings.

Is there anything out there that tells me the correct set up proceedures/settings for linking these 2 items? My next step is a structure scanner but I want to sort this problem out first. I have taken images of the image error if anyone's interested.

Thanks Allan

Stolen Kayak

Not mine, saw it on gumtree and thought I would post it here. I'm guessing there's zero chance of anyone identifying a stolen kayak but it's a fairly sad story and thought it would be worth mentioning just incase someone can help.

TV Boating Show

Gday All - recently on TV in Perth I believe there was a Western Australian boating show, that I think included vision of the Perth to Rottnest Convoy and other general info. I think, but not 100% that the hosts/reporters were on a Fury boat, I think the show was designed as an info for beginners type thing, was on 2/3 weeks ago. Can anyone shed any light on which channel aired this show and what it was called.

Thank you
