Bush Fire Too Close for Comfort
Submitted by monstaf1sh on Sat, 2012-04-28 11:08Some idiot started a fire in the reserve down the road from my house..
Earlier that night I took my dog for a walk past the reserve when my dog stopped in in his trakcs and started growling and going of at the bushes which I thought was strange, I reckon these animals have a 6th sense about these things.
We had a bag packed just in case and I must admit I thought about grabbing my tackle :P

A fishing story with a great end
Submitted by Ash88 on Sat, 2012-04-28 07:24Well me and a mate went out last night down to long point to try our luck and we were there for about four hours just getting nibbles. in the end we ended up catching a couple of whiting that went back in and a bream that also went back in.
We had a visit from a dolphin that nearly gave me a heart attack went he surfaced pretty close after being out a bit deeper, and now for the actual great part of this story and I would like to thank this person very much because it doesn't happen very often.
so we were thinking of packing up and heading home when a boat came in and the bloke driving the boat gets up on the jetty starts walking over to us carry something (at this point I didn't know what it was) and goes do you guys want a fish? to which i replied after seeing it closer with a wtf is that ?!!! and the reply being its a mulloway. I can't be stuffed gutting and cleaning it so after thanking the generous stranger and shaking his hand we packed up our gear and headed to the car.
When we got to the car we weighed it and it weighed 19kgs and I roughly estimate to be about the 90cm mark but i could be wrong.

Veggie garden
Submitted by Goodz on Fri, 2012-04-27 19:07With my current garden area being quite limited for space I was wondering if there is anyone SOR not too far from Piara Waters that has some spare ground they would like to use as a veggie garden?!?! Or anyone with a garden that wants to share some seeds/plants/produce??? Or anyone that actually has acreage that may want to lease me (cheaply ;) some land??? So many things I want to grow but have no space!!!!!

Nice session on the squid
Submitted by Xtreme Coolers on Fri, 2012-04-27 11:58Hi all
Took the young fella out into the sound with a good mate of mine on Saturday. Headed out from South Perth at 10.30. Enjoyed the trip to Freo and then headed to the rock wall just off Fremantle yacht club. The NE wind was perfect and pushed us across the weed banks. Plenty squid around. The boys pulled in 21 in a short time. The wind dropped to nothing so it was time for a swim. Water was brilliant, clear and still a great temp.
We did not look at tide, moon or time of day. Just got there at the right time. As the wind died off and the temp got up, the squid went off the boil a bit. We stopped when we had a good feed for the three families.
Headed back into the swan for another swim and some pics.
Boys and dads had a great time on the water. Very enjoyable. We even got a few herring on the lumo.
Cheers
Dave

Work Ute Advice.
Submitted by Goodz on Thu, 2012-04-26 15:50Just after a few opinions on those who know motors...
I'm looking at trading the old Hilux in for a more suitable work ute... I do colourbond fencing and put a fair bit of weight in materials on the back of the ute and then tow a full 6x8 tandem (braked) trailer which makes the poor Hilux struggle.
I need something that tows well and after some other options other than the obvious Landcruiser. Looking at around 30k. Obviously 4x4.
Cheers,
Ben.

In Canada Part Deux
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Thu, 2012-04-26 10:47So I have been touring around Quebec and Montreal for the last 10 days and figured I would throw up some more photos for those interested. See the first post here : http://fishwrecked.com/forum/canada
We had a night in Toronto also, and will go back to do some more exploring, but still got a good feel for the city and went out to catch a Toronto Blue Jays game where we got seats in literally the last row of the nosebleeds with a bunch of Irish and Pommy blokes and were all having fun trying to work out the rules.
We got the opportunity for a free ride from Barrie, ON and back from the people we are staying with. Martin and his friend Ian are Machinists making stamp tools and dies for the auto industry and there is work in Sherbrook, QC for them so we hitched a ride with the guys and they dropped us off in Montreal on the way through.
In Montreal we stayed for three nights and had a great time touring around the city on Bixi Bikes, which are a bike station hire system where you can hire a bike for $7.00 Canadian a day from 400 stations around the city with 5000 bikes. You pick it up with a code and can ride around for 1/2 hour trips at a time and deposit the bike at a destination as many times as you like in a 24 hour period. We took in Old Montreal, the Basilica Notre Dame, The port and waterfront, Place Jacque-Cartier, Rue St-Dennis, Ile St Helene and Ile Notre Dame where we saw the Casino and the Biosphere.
We then jumped onto a bus to Quebec City where we have spent 7 days touring. The old city is wonderful with high walls, gate access and the Citadele. There are _heaps_ of top quality bars, restaurants, museums, antique shops, crafts and shopping. The weather was good when we arrived so we went all through the old town including many beers and a meal at Aux Anciens Canadiens which was built in 1675 where Jane had a Wild Game Pie and Maple Syrup tart, while I had a Bison Burger! Over the weekend it snowed and hit us with frozen rain(hail) which kept us indoors for a day or two. After the weather cleared we have been out to the Musee de la Civilisation to take in the Samurai exhibit, the Quebec Aquarium and today we went to the Huron Wendake First Nation musuem and resteraunt. We had a 3 cheese(fromage) tasting plate with Pistachios, Dried Berries and a meat tasting plate with Smoked Sturgeon, wild Mushrooms, Smoked Salmon and Caviar and Wapati(Deer) Jerky washed down with a Huron Beer called Kwe.
Off too the Choco Musee http://www.chocomusee.com/ and the Marche Du Vieux Port (Old Port Markets) tomorrow before taking the bus back to Montreal and another out to Bromont QC to be picked up by the lads on their way back to Barrie ON.

Coral Bay
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Wed, 2012-04-25 20:48Arrived in CB on monday to find the wind up a bit. not much to do so we went swimming and of corse the Spanglies were there right at your feet.
Tuesday was a day of relaxation for us with a swim in the arvo heading further out off the point to find some great coral formations and a wide array of fish with a couple of sharks.
Wednesday we headed out to snorkle with the Manta Rays. It was a great day out seeing a quite a few sharks ranging from Black Tips ,White tips and what seemed to be a Large Bronzie. all great to watch swimming around in clear water. Second dive for the day was with not 1 but 3 Mantas swimming around right below us, was great to see. #rd dive was heading to what they call the shark cleaning station, with 3 sharks just cruising around right below your feet, fantastic to see these creatures in their natural habitat and not attached to your line..
Thursday we are heading out with Captain Bernie to see what there is on offer.
The weather so far has been great.
Only another 10 days left, not happy but thats life

Bull shark killing another bull shark video
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2012-04-25 10:03A filmmaker has captured footage of a bull shark killing one of its own kind off Cape York in Queensland.
Toby Bosschieter, a presenter on Andrew Ettingshausen's Escape with ET television show, was on an 1800km cruise around Cape York in a 4.8m tinnie when he filmed the incident in January.
He posted the footage to his YouTube channel last week.
The bull sharks were drawn to the tinnie by the thrashing fish that Mr Bosschieter, his brother and another friend were catching.
"One of the sharks started cruising in from a couple of hundred metres away … at its height there were around eight bull sharks," Mr Bosschieter told ninemsn.
The brothers attached a fish to a rope and threw it towards the sharks, prompting some to leap from the water.
One shark took the fish, but the feeder quickly became fodder for a larger cousin.
"We felt this kind of tug, tug on the line. One of the sharks has got a hold of the fish and doesn't want to let it go, but another shark is trying to eat [the first shark]," Mr Bosschieter said.
"Bull sharks, tiger sharks, hammerheads and bronze whalers, they will all have a go at each other if they get the opportunity."
Mr Bosschieter took the boat to shallow water and filmed the larger shark feeding on its victim.
After the large shark had left the area, the men retrieved the victim's remains, which are seen as still photographs at the end of the footage.

Trade insurance
Submitted by james14 on Tue, 2012-04-24 17:48Hi all,
For all the tradesmen out there, I'm just wondering if you have tool insurance,
And if not, why?
Looking at getting tool insurance soon but not sure who to use.
With stealing a regular thing, looking after thousands of dollars worth of tools seems like a good idea to me!
Any info would be much appreciated,
Thanks James

the truth of Anzacs and Gallipoli
Submitted by Tony Halliday on Tue, 2012-04-24 12:21ok, long time since I opened a can of worms...
so here goes,
My son came home spouting all this bravado about the Anzacs at Gallipoli and how we need to go the war momorial again ( as we do every year I may add) to honour the great services fo the men at Gallipoli that died to protect our freedom!
"hold on wait " I told my son, thats not the truth!, but he said his teacher had told them and the local RSL chap too!
How many of us know the real truth of the Turkish invassion of the first world war and what really Gallipoli stands for.
No disrespect to our diggers, fallen men and heroism, BUT how from the TRUTH has it gone, is Anzac a day of saying sorry for invading another country at British order and sacrificing our young soldiers.
Or has it been turned by twists of Spin-doctor’s into Aussie battlers fighting for the freedom and liberation of Australia. ( which it was very far from)
Now before laying the boot in read this first from the Autralian War Memorial:
http://www.awm.gov.au/wartime/38/article/
and this:
I have a major problem with my son being lead to glorify the killing of young men in absolute mess of a war.
I would rather he stood to silence for respect of those fallen for choices they did not make and for wars started by old men in the back lines with no respect for human life.
Have we lost the true meaning of Anzacs and Gallipoli??? have we spun it into something it's not
AND WOULD WE LET JAPANESE PEOPLE COME AND CELEBRATE THEIR INVASSION OF OUR LANDS ON OUR SOILS?
(because thats what we do every year in Turkey. When we should be saying sorry and forgivence for our men slaughtered there.)
As some one who has seen the ugly pointed side of war firs thand, this is close to my heart!
just my views
Tony
seems many will kick, punch and hit out at me without reading what I put up.
I rest my case boys, you did not read, absorb and see the point!
This was never an attack on Anzacs ro the day or Australians, but a statement that it's being twisted by pollitical views and since 9/11 into something it never was.
It was about the commoradery and never leaving your mate behind, it was about standing by your fellow serviceman.
yes insert later to prove a point!

Rockingham tips
Submitted by Garrett on Sun, 2012-04-22 19:03Hey all.
Circumstances have left me looking at spending most of Tuesday the 24th in the Shoalwater Bay area, and I am looking for advice on where I might be best served finding a fish. Landbased naturally. Using lures. Not looking for a feed necessarily, although not adverse to that either of course. Don't need anyone's secret spots, just some general advice. PM if you can help, or if you might be willing to join.
Cheers, Garrett
