Reports
Ono Island Fiji last week
Submitted by Longcast on Tue, 2012-03-27 11:22Firstly thanks to all forum members who helped me out prior to trip with info relating to Ono Island.
On arrival at Kadavu airport we were met by Sim and Lee both staff for the Oneta Resort departing the airport we were expecting to board one of the many vehicles in the car park, no we walked past them(the first of many miss interperations for the trip)and through the beach front to the boat awaiting us what a magic view standing on the beach i knew our adventure had truely begun.
The Host Piero Piva greeted us on arrival at Oneta Resort Ono Island and discussed the resort and fishing we were all excited for a fish but would have to wait for the following day what an amazing location and great host and staff.
I must ad the meals prepared and cooked are of the highest quality with our first meal served that evening everyone one was under the impression we were eating a chicken curry only to be told by Piero it was fish.
Our first day was spent on the western side of the island due to strong easterly winds chasing red bass and what ever else was around it was a great day with many fish captured and released and quite a bit of hardware left behind due to the attacks from the red bass.
The largest fish for the day would hve been a big flowery cod estimated at 15+KG.Jigging the drop off accounted for tea with Coronation and Coral trout coming on board.
Second day was spent in the lagoon and western side again due to the easterly wind the flats fishing was amazing with blue fin trevally lighting up as they attacked lures truly memorable. So many species of fish hard to keep track!Back to the resort for a masssage and Fiji Bitter.
Day three would see the wind debate giving us access to the main eastern side reef system which we were all awaiting to have a crack at.The bommies and reefs edge give little room for era while on my second cast with a black fisherman long pen with Sim casting alongside me on the second pop of this lure it was consumed into a massive boil created by a big GT within seconds he had busted me off on the nearest bommie leaving me in a state of shock hands shacking at what had just taken place and Sim reminding me BIG GT.It would not be the last time that this would happen that day truly amazing memories of a fish so powerful and adapt to its enviroment.
Day four came around to quickly with the weather still fine we proceeded to the western side and planned to work all the way wround to the eastern side of the reef .The fishing was slow for whatever reason. So we decided to stop and free dive the shallows what a memorable experiance. The fish for the day was a big barracuda which completely smashed my aswb stickbait taking it and itself out of the water completely.
Day five was by far the best day a complete glass off we found an area where we had bait swell and current and it was game on.IMO it is funny how you remember the missed fish more than the captured ones.Piero and i watched as a big GT approched a popper at a million miles an hour to stop short follow it at a distance then peel off and away.I had three massive boils from a large GT that shot my stick bait into the air but still not connecting with the barbless hooks. We caught some nice fish that daay in excellent conditions.
Lures used were Fisherman,Craftbait,Nature Boy Surfish Tuna,ASWB the stand out lure for the trip was the ASWB120SS stick bait in black.
Rods Carpenter CV79/40 Yamaga Blue Sniper 80/5.
Reals Daiwa 2010 6500H Shimano SW Stella 5000.
Line Varivas Avani GT PE 8 & PE 5.
The stickbaits were more productive during the five days than poppers we always had both in action on the boat till which ever one prevailed stand out colour was black with silver wings.
I can strongly recommend to any one this adventure it has so much more to offer than just fishing. The scenery both above and below the water line a massage after a hard days casting the food and accomadation the polite staff.I know i will be back.

Exxy Report 26/3/12
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2012-03-26 19:56Another magic day up here, couldn't find a deckie so went solo with a late start. Didn't even get to feel the sinker on the bottom before the first ruby was on, second drop was a nice pinky, third drop a good ruby which was sharked and it was time to move on. Tried a few other areas for a decent amberjack, loads of spanglies etc etc. Checked out all my spots (trolled over them with no luck) as its been a long time since they've been fished with tantas out of action. Ended up back at the goldband spot just to fill the bag with some more tasties. Got busted up by 2 solid trout just outside the passage before heading in. Good day out there.

Long Point
Submitted by nickyau2 on Mon, 2012-03-26 08:04Went down to Long Point on saturday arvo/evening to give the spot a try, plenty of good size herring around and also picked up a couple of tailor in the mid-30's. A local was telling me the tailor have been pretty consistent down there in the evenings. I'd avoid using bait till the sun is almost down, there were tonnes of pickers amongst the herring. Sorry no pics unless you want to see a sunset

Day out 24/3
Submitted by lawndered on Sat, 2012-03-24 21:11Well, for the first time today went for a troll, with the idea to troll on the way out to Rotto and see what happened. Well had two lures out on deep diver 3-5m laser pro and one pink chrome 2-3m. so we figured we had no hope( wife, me and 2 kidz) so out we went and plodded around, the wife clearing the weed of the lures and me trying to explain how, when , what and all sorts to her( she tries, lol).
The deep diver was less troubled then the shallower lure and about 15-20min in to our surprise a solid hook up. Man couldn't wipe the smile from my face, it was running like a train and we turned towards it(cause the crap outfits we have...) allowing me to recover some line, up close and I got the wife to switch of the moter cause we were in a good possie, another good run and then the fish went deep. Pump and wind pump and wind up she came with anothre couple of short runs( I had the drag on a bit by now). Only say 10mins into it, and it came up on the rear of the boat. Now my poor wife had been running around, she had reeled in the other lure(as to plan) and then because we were getting smashed by the fish, grabbed the helm and did the driving. So the fish showed some colour and WOW it was a beaut Spanish Mack, nice size too big sucker. But as I said came up on the Starboard side.
Now i was panicked and started screaming to the wife, Clear the rod, clear the rod, making my way over to that side the fish took off, straight under the boat (yep new it would) but what I didnt know is that the wife had unfortunately tangeled the lure on the rear clip and was trying to free it when the Mackie surface. So no matter how much I screamed in the end it didnt matter, I couldn't get the tip of my rod down to clear the bottom of the boat and all that because I couldn't get over Starboard and into the corner. "Twang" one lovely Mackie gone. One Pissed of Fisher still here.
Trolled a littel more but no luck.
Did some bottom bashing and picked up a foxfish, are they good eating??
Then did some squidding for fresh bait with the girls squidding and me relaxing 6 good squid and a cuttlefish.
Then set up for a dusk fish and just before sunset my wife pulled in anothe nice Gummy( her 2nd in 3 weeks) pics attached.
Well all in all a great day, but a Mackie is one of those fish that is top of my list and has been for years, boat owner now for 6 months and first troll so hopefully it wont be years until I land one.
Cheer and By the way, great conditions after lunch man best i have seen for ages.

Ikan Tapah ( Wallago Attu) Wild Fishing Thailand By BKKGUY
Submitted by bkkguy on Sat, 2012-03-24 11:25Wallago attu (Thai: ปลาเค้าขาว) is a species of catfish in the family Siluridae, or "sheatfishes". The fish is commonly known by its genus name, wallago. Found in large rivers and lakes, it can reach 2.4 m (8 feet) total length. This south Asian fish is found from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan to Vietnam and Indonesia, and is also reported from Afghanistan.
AggressivenessIts common to find huge frogs and fishes inside its stomach, when cut for cooking. It has been claimed that in some areas of Thailand the natives fear the species because of its believed habit of eating small ducks, dogs, and small children. It is thought the Tapah became this aggressive due to natives laying to rest their dead in the water. The catfish would then see this as a ready supply of food.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallago_attu
My Netherland angler landed his ferious Wallago recent in one of the remote dam in Thailand.
To catch this predator fish in the wild is already challenging and to land it on lure, that something he can brag about a to his grandchildrens in many years to come.... ;)
Enjoys the exciting youtube and photos highlights of the trip..

Hooked it, but what was it?
Submitted by GlennO87 on Fri, 2012-03-23 15:21Hey people.
Went out on my Uncles boat last week and went to little island. Took my 15kg rod and my little flick stick for whiting and so on. Has 2kg braid on it and its probably a 2-3kg rod. First drop over the side i flicked the arm over and BANG got a few huge bites, then the rod bent over. From memory we were only in 7-8m of water. It was pulling under the boat and around the boat. If i tried to pull with my little rod it would have snapped and the line was already close to giving.
Every time i pulled i maybe got half a foot on it, and it pulled 10ft. I ended up losing line and i did not gain any. It didnt take off like a ray, it didnt fight like a ray, didnt really kick the rod around either, was just a weight. Felt like i had hold of a whale. After 35 minutes it went under the boat and the line hit the prop and i lost it. Was VERY upset.
I can not even think of what it may have been? Still scratching my head.....You can hook onto some pretty wacko stuff not far from shore...

Salmon/Tuna Report
Submitted by infectedmulie on Thu, 2012-03-22 06:45New to forums. Always browsed but never made an account. Just a hello message and to let you know I work on a mullie boat in Bremer Bay and if i'm not fishing on that i'm fishing on the beach/rocks etc
Not so many salmon around right now seen a few 10-20 tonne schools around. But skipjack tuna by the boat load. Lots of fun to catch but not good eating so i've heard never tried it myself! Apparently my skipper told me they have changed their migration pattern and hit bremer for the last few years. Lots of them around right now we got heaps in our net yesterday and they are ruining our mulies chasing them around! But I can keep you guys updated on salmon etc as soon as I catch / see them I can let you know. As i'm sure everyone is as anxious to catch some as me!
Look forward to becoming a regular on the forums!
- EDIT
Masses of salmon around Bremer right now cannot stop catching them stay tuned for pics/vids. THEY ARE HERE!
Added one picture taken on phone just to give an idea of average size
EDIT 4pm 07-04
Salmon everywhere main schools have arrived. season is in full swing having a ball catching them down here! easter weekend beaches are packed here. I'm working morning on the boat and night at the bar no time to throw in a line this weekend but will make up for it mid week! Have to be doing something very wrong not to catch one. Best beach at the moment is Back Beach down by the AB farm. But like i said they are everywhere! tight lines all

A day out (Sunday morning)
Submitted by garethgkr on Mon, 2012-03-19 22:02Had work in the evening before Sunday. After work I was pretty buggered so I downed a can of Mother. BAD DECISION! Couldn't sleep! At 4am I left to meet up with the others at my mates place. We meet up with Al (Shikari Charters) at Freo Boat Harbour. Nice bloke.
It was a smooth ride when we left. And full speed ahead out wide. Started the day with chasing some snapper somewhere off Rotto. A few bites and one of the guys brought up the first fish. A 60cm snapper, back it went to the water. After a few minutes another mate got a pretty decent run as he was dropping his bait down. Up came a very nice snapper about 5-7kgs. After 30 minutes not one of us had a bite. Al decided to troll a lil bit of the west end of Rotto. After an hr of trolling and nothing we headed out deeper in to 100m territory.
There we started sending down out baits. One of the guys got a ray which we cut the line of. Then a small kingfish. As I was waiting for my bait to hit the bottom I had a massive bite! (Boy is braided line awesome! Able to feel everything!) I then set the drag and it just kept pulling more line out, increasing the drag a bit more, I then started the battle. After 15 or so minutes a damn noah surfaced, as Al turned around for the gaff it bit the leader and off it went. According to Al it would have given 50kg of fillet.
After 20 minutes one of the guys pulled up a black arse. The next few minutes I pulled up a nor western... After a few hrs and alot of drifiting around, not a single fish was brought up.
Around 1pm we started heading back to Rotto to troll for mackies. 3 hrs later and a lot of weed. We headed back in.
Had work at 6pm and uni the next morning, I was dead after uni...
In the end, Al definetely knows his stuff and was very professional. Would definetely go back out with him.
Note: I've only been out fishing on a boat twice (both charters) so I'm still new at it, probably why I suck at getting anything. Parents are mad that ive spend 450 bucks in total and have yet to catch enything edible.. But it is definetely fun and worthwhile!
PS. WhereTF is the fish!! hahas

Couple of metro macks.
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Sun, 2012-03-18 00:36Took my bro out for a troll this arvo. He moved over from South Oz a year or so ago so this was the first trolling session he'd really done.
Looking at Seabreeze we figured we could head out late arvo and get a few hours under our belt before heading back at dusk. We shot out from Woodies at 3.30pm and had lures in the water by about 4pm half way between Carnac and Rottnest. We'd been trolling for about half an hour when we came across the first school of baitfish which never really seemed to disappear from then on, there were schools bubbling across the surface everywhere.
The seaweed was pretty thick and we could only run two lures because of it, it was a fulltime job retrieving the lures to pull the weed off. At about 5.30 we hit our first mackie on one of the new(er?) Halco 6m divers and Jay had a smile a mile wide, it was his first mack and it was metro. Half an hour later we got onto another on the same lure. Both of them checked in around the 1m mark... not huge but big enough for some fun and a feed or two.

15 March Wilbinga Report
Submitted by Sammut on Thu, 2012-03-15 18:04Hey guys,
Went out this morning to Wilbinga with Sherbs and a few others. Morning started off slow with the balloons out and running out of helium, but as the wind picked up we managed to get them out.
LOTS of rays around, hooking onto about 7 and loosing most at the surf. At about 8.40 Sherbz's balloon went off with big splashes and jumping with flashes of silver we thought it could have been another mackie...turned out to be a dirty old bronzie. Didnt bother taking pics of it tho.
I had to head off coz i had a date so left at about 10.30 and Sherbs stayed on to fish. i got home at 12 and getting ready to go out and i got a call from sherbs saying he was bogged!
Turned out that half the car was in the surf, and all the wheels at least half burried in the sand. Photo doesnt do it justice :P
So i had to stand up the date and go buy a kangaroo jack and borrow some wooden planks to help get him out! Finally got home about 5...im sure he would have been in trouble with the missus for getting home late!!
All in all a very eventful day!

Christened my new donk with a Saturday night fish out from Mandurah.
Submitted by Browny on Wed, 2012-03-14 20:21Well finally I have the new donk on my boat!
A new Suzuki 250hp 4-banger!
I collected the boat on Saturday arvo and went on a test run in the estuary and all went well. Spoke with my usual fishing buddy, and couldn't wait till the Sunday, so decided to go for an overnighter then and there.
The reasoning was 2 fold; wanted to run the motor in, and also wanted to do my best to put my bride's cousin onto a dhuie. (he's over from the UK)
We managed to organise everything, and were on the water about 6.00 and motored on out. As the motor had to be run in, that meant varying the revs every 5 mins up and down the range. This made for a slowish trip out, and it was well and truly dark by the time we got to our chosen grounds about 26nM out.
(Interestingly, the water temp inside the 5 fathom was about 23.5degrees, but out wide it was down to 21.5degrees.)
The winds were the predicted 15knots, and gusting about 18, so the sea-anchor was set for the first drift and lines quickly dropped.
1st fish was a small pinky which was quickly released back. This was followed by the first dhuie of the night at a bit over 10kg:
The fishing was very steady, with fish caught each drift.
Up till 12PM Saturday, we had the keeper dhuie, a nice whiskery shark (yum!), another dhuie released, along with a fair few pinkies released.
Early Sunday morn, I decided to shift a few hundred meters onto another mark in the hope of getting the Pom his first dhuie.
Everything went according to plan: no sooner had he dropped to the bottom, there was a maniiacal grunt, and an exclamation from the pom of "fook this thing is pooling hard!".
The fish did everything right, as he made duplicate runs back down to the bottom, and made life difficult mid-water also. POM did well tho, and he soon had colour and an excited whoop followed when his first ever dhuie was netted!
It went a respectable 14kg on the digital scales on board, and I reckon this piccy says it all of how he felT about the fish!:
By 5AM, we had 2 dhuies 10 & 14kg, 2 sharks, and a nice 3kg pinky on ice, so decided to call it a night and head in.
We'd released 2 other dhuies, 3 stingrays, and 2 other sharks along with the numerous smaller pinkies.
The motor was simply fantastic, and what a sesational way to christen her with getting someone his first decent dhuie!

Quick Metro Fish 13/03/2012
Submitted by evilhomer on Wed, 2012-03-14 12:23First report so hopefully will help others out!
Me and a mate headed for a metro fish last night, the plan was to be fishing at 6 but we left it quite late and with getting bait/traffic etc the first cast was about 7. Guy beside us landed a nice Tailor and pretty soon we were in on the action landing a couple of nice Tailor of varying sizes we kept one each for the table. We were using whole Mullie on ganged hooks with no weight and slow retrieve, worked well. After the Tailor bites bite’s dropped off we changed to some heavier tackle and within 20 mins my mate was into this Shark. Not 100% sure what type it is maybe one of you guys could ID for us. See picture below. Apologies for the poor photos!
All in all a good metro fish with some choppers and two Tailor kept as well as my mates first Shark, also couple of Port Jacksons caught.

Seasport Charter 2 day Trip
Submitted by Goodz on Tue, 2012-03-13 21:10Well I've just had another great weekend up in Jurien with a group of guys fishing with Whitey on his Seasport Charters. We snagged some great weather and once again Whitey got us onto the fish, quite easily getting our bag limit both days.
Both days were started with a mack troll and everyone got to bring one in each with no fish below 15kg.
Whitey the old sly dog dropped a jig down whilst one of the macks was being reeled in and hooked one up himself which he proceeded to land in good time. (Sorry no pic) I dropped a jig down just after him and also hooked up but unluckily only landed a sambo!
The bottom fishing wasn't exactly hot but the fish came on the bite closer to high tide and everyone got a few keepers each and plenty of other fish to keep us entertained. Jigs and bait were fairly even overall with Dhuie of the trip going to Rob (deckie) on jig!
Other highlights were me and Whitey hooking a few small tuna as they swam past and watching a decant Hammerhead take Whitey's and give him a workout before finally biting through his wire assist.
Also after bagging out this first day and setting out a spread for a possible marlin only 20 mins in and we had a 100kgish black come up and smack the short rigger twice popping it out and even taking some line but unforuntaly no hook up! Another hour or so and no more action.
Thanks again Whitey for another awesome weekend!

Your thoughts please guys
Submitted by maskie on Mon, 2012-03-12 22:08Hey guys I recently purchased a 7.2 razor line. Paid 88k for it. I then found out when towing it home. 1 it had no number plates 2 the trailer lights didn't work. Then on my first outing I found out the VHF 27 meg and cd radio didn't work. Also the bilge bait pump and fuel gauge was broken. I contacted the owner and he's response was you don't get warranty when buying a boat. Wat r your thoughts on how to handle the situation
