Reports

Where are they biting at the moment

Hillarys

Are you allowed to fish inside Hillarys? Like on the boardwalk near The Breakwater or infront of Hippo Creek etc. ?

I see multiple schools of large whiting swimming around at night and heaps of silver trevally in the day time and sometimes at night, I've never seen anyone try to fish them?

Eshed

Any one have any reports for Eshed or around that area

Jurien reports??

Considering heading to jurien on Saturday, was there about a month ago and got heaps of mackie just wondering if there are still many around?? I'm presuming that with a few still getting caught in Perth they must be up there still but any report before I head up would much appreciated?

Cheers

quick report

Evening all

Managed to get out today, meeting up with forum member at point peron and heading to the back of the 5 for a sniff around.

With Daryl on board, pleasantries and lies exchanged we set off for some fresh squid and a few yellowtail for the Arvos fishing. The squid were thick and it looked like the fishing gods were on our side, but we all w better than that!

Arrive at the back of the 5 and have a few drifts, and find a nice lump to set some burley going. ( the old bloke managed to lose all my marks.... a couple of nice skippy to start and the usual plague of wrasse had us entertained for a while until the soft plastic I had lurking out the back went hell for leather.  Buggered if I know what it was...sambo? caught plenty of pinkies over the years and the way this think went m sure I had a steamtrain with epilepsy!

Anyways long story short I was bricked and left a bit intrigued, so on went a livie on the duke gear.....same result. 80lb braid onto 80lb fluorocarbon and this thing was just playing  games.

one more try... Drifted a fresh squid out the back and another run, this time for old mate but it was dropped.

Things died off pretty quickly after his mayhem....thank bloody god my back is killing!

Managed one keeper snapper grew 3 small ones back and stopped in for a few whiting and some eating squid on the way back to the ramp.

Anyone have any ideas what I was getting pummelled by? Tactics?

fresh squid and whiting for tea:)

Mackie Islands trip

Recently got the opportunity to go on a friends boat over to the Mackerel Islands.
Got hit with some pretty average conditions (most days >15knots) but the 27'er cat made it bearable ;)

Surprisingly landed no respectable mackerel or pelagics for that matter, but managed to get into a few decent bottom fish on the artificials.
I decided this trip I would not use any bait and stick to just plastics, lures and jigs and it proved the goods, hands down outfished those with bait...

Got some nice trout, cod and a chinaman fish that went 11.6kg on the scales (will upload that pic when I get it from my mates camera).
Also managed to pull up a Malibar? cod that went just over a metre and estimated 20kg on my 4000 sustain with a 12lb rod, took about half an hour to land.

Had an awesome time in such an amazing place, pity only had 4 days on the water. Caught thousands of little to mid-sized trevally (all sorts) and queenies on surface lures around the island on the days that blew up... could do that all day long. Will have to do it all again soon!

Here are a couple pics with more to come later.

I got myself some shark bait.

went to hillarys marina to gather some bait for the freezer. So tired of buying mullet for $7 a kilo at the bait shops.

got this bunch on saturday night.

and got another 8 last night.

picture doesnt do them justice, as the big one was close to 2 kg. 1.82kg on my fish scales at home.

Busselton jetty mullas

Do any of the local sw boys know if there has been any mullas running yet

bulk blood?

does anyone know were i can get bulk blood? for burley etc

cheynes beach

me, the old man and my brother headed down Cheynes beach friday morning with nothing but the rods, beer and high expectations, got there around lunch on friday and headed down the rocks to flick a few lures around for a hour or 2 and much to our dislike it was very slow dad hooking a bonito but losing it at his feet although a small seal came up and was sussing us out (perhaps why the salmon wernt biting?), we headed back and called it a day, only to come back down first thing saturday morning and the rocks were packed managed to find a spot and start what turned out to be an awesome session was slow to start but then the salmon were chasing bait fish about 100m off the rocks with waves of small fish leaping out the water, we managed to land 12 salmon while a good 15-20 spat the lures right at our feet, also a few guys just down from us landed 2 big sambo's. towards the end of the sesh a turtle popped his head up and had a slow swim by. Things started to quitet off so we called it a day, we came back down early sunday morning and it was quiet again, only seeing 1 salmon get landed, but then out of no where a (what i think it was) southern write whale surfaced was a good 12-15m long and only 5-6m off the rocks we thought it was a submarine surfacing! was crazy too see we didnt even know it was there till she came up! so we watcher her swim off and then headed back to pack up and head home, was a great trip cant wait to get back down there was good to see so much marine life! will never forget seeing that whale so close!

Metro Macks on new nub

Hey Guys

My new tub arrived from sydney on friday arvo..  Took her home and had the boys come round to have a few drinks on it.

The plan saturday was to spend the morning giving it a wash after being on the truck..   Had a guy come put a HIN number on it first thing.  Once he left the weather was still looking good..

We were on the way to hillarys ramp at 12 to take it for a quick spin and see how she goes.. on the way to the ramp we saw how good the weather was so turned around and went back and got the mackie rods.

Back at the ramp 2 mins later, we launched for the first time. Headed straight for rotto.  the twin 200hp s were humming along.

Within 45 mins of being at rotto off went the rod..  The result a nice metro mackie on the new tub.

there was plenty of bait around

Left soon after that as the storm came in.. not a bad 1.5hrs testing the ride.

Hopefully this is a good sign ahead

cheers

My Jurien Highlights

My own personal account from the Jurien trip with Chrisp, Daz, Schecky and TimVB from Thursday/Friday. There were simply too many highlights for one report, so here are a few of my own captures from Thursday and Friday to supplement Chrisp's excellent report.

Boys, great trip, great company, great skipper but sack the deckie....hahaha......man that young fella could fish! I learnt a thing or two from the young fella....never too old to learn eh!

Friday was the best days fishing I have ever had, enough said. Most fish were released apart from a couple of small pinkies, baldies and yellowfin tuna we kept for a fresh feed.

Heading out, what a sight......

I know what your thinking Daz.......if we spent less on fishing gear, we would be able to afford something better than a few jam donuts for breaky!

The PE5 gear ready for a spot of sambo stretching on dawn.....ended in tears for me, with 2 big fish pulling the hooks, and a couple of Mackie snip offs thinning my jig stocks.

Bring out the PE2 gear, and the sambo's come out to play....only a small one, but plenty of fun on PE2.

My PB pinkie of 88 cm, on PE2 on day1. Went quite hard and called it for a sambo. Released excellently as most pinkies do.

Another PE2 pinkie.....Chrisp was meanwhile pulling in 3 pinkies for every one of mine! Released.

Twin hookup of red bight fish on jig for me and Daz on day1. Nice variety.  If its red, its dead I am afraid.......

Gotta chuck in the big dhu one more time....yep, I was stoked! Never thought I would better a 98 cm dhu on PE2 I got earlier in the year on my boat, but this one went a genuine 100 cm and with 30 lb leader, it was touch and go. After a long battle on light gear, we revived the worn out dhu with the big deck flush into  its mouth for a few minutes while Whitey released the air out from the air bladder, it started thumping its tail and biting down hard the hose indicating it was ready to go......we gave it every chance to survive and released back to the depths hopefully to make more dhuies.

Another Jurien Trip

Hey all,

Headed up to Jurien last thursday friday and while the thursday was slow by Normal standard all memories would be erased by the end of Friday as the fish turned on Big time!

Daz on the first drop of the day, He backed up with another next drift..

Schecky with the only Mack on jig thet didn't manage to pick our pockets during the day,

I then scored a nice Yellowfin on troll,

The result after a rest in the fridge overnight

Whitey had mentioned that he had seen some solid yellowfin hanging around the bait schools at our next spot. First drop and Tim hooks up solid,Line is searing off the stella on a tight drag faster than anything i have witnessed. After a 10 minute battle on Pe5 he lands a Solid barrel on jig. Very Jealous of this capture.Good stuff Tim!

We then lost a number of jigs to macks which were also around in good numbers. I remember John saying to Tim,"How Much is this Slide actor?". "About thirty Bucks". "ok if i loose it ill pay your accommodation".John drops down,Crank Crank, snip! Shortest loan in history.
I was using a lamble and got snipped so threw on a old 160gram Sacrafice leaf for 2 drifts and got nothing. So thew on a old lamble bait and hooked up solid for 5 minutes to something large but was then snipped again. They sure love the quality goods!

Off to our next spot which produced lots of quality pinks-released

Daz with the first Dhu of the day-Released

More Pinks-released

This time on a piece of Yellowfin! ha ha

John Then hooked up on somthing solid which went on several screaming runs.None of us were paying a lot of attention as we thought he had just hooked another sambo. That was until the fish started surfacing 15 mters out from the boat and we all knew what was coming....

100cm Dhu on Pe2 and a New Pb for John beating his previous pb by 2 cm. This fish was also well cared for and released. Good stuff mate!

Not to be outdone whitey Jigs a Solid Trout. The first He has seen in Jurien and he was stoked!

Daz and another nice Dhu-Released

Last drop of the Day and one more honky for me on placcy-released

Well that was a case of second time lucky as i had already spent an hour loading this only to have the system crash right at the end.

It was the best day of fishing i have been involved in for the shear variety and size of the fish landed. We also accounted for Baldies,Blackass,Slimey mackeral,Sambos and Ambers.
To add to that spending it with a good bunch of mates made the day a breeze and super enjoyable.

Thanks again to Whitey. He never fails to deliver

Chris

Exmouth report

A few weeks ago, I towed the boat up to Exmouth for a week.

We were ostensibly up there for a 50th birthday party, so it wasn't meant to be a 'fishing trip' per se, but that didn't stop me from getting out on the water nearly every day.

One of the guys up there was Trent (Simbad off FW), so I always had someone willing to get out and chase the fish.

The weather gods were pretty kind, and we had some pretty awesome conditions almost every day.

In summary the fishing was pretty slow, with just enough short pockets of really hot bites to keep us heading out.

We put in 2 days trolling for the beakies - picked up plenty of tuna, but on the first day we didn't raise any bills. Second day of trolling we raised 2 or 3 (still some debate about what one of them was!) and hooked one black, but it threw the hooks on a jump. Right at the end of the day long corner went off on a solid run and I could see something jumping in the distance, but couldn't make out what it was. There were a few premature marlin calls made, only to reveal this dirty barracuda that kindly trimmed my soft oscar. There were a few interesting moments trying to get a pic before the release as he had some angry teeth and was pretty unhappy about being on the boat.

As with the last time I went to Exmouth, the Makkie trolling was really slow. We put in quite a few hours, but this is the only mak that fell to a trolled minnow. An X-rap did the damage.

We headed out for some GT casting around the islands one day, but after about 10 casts I realised that the shoulder I'd injured a few weeks earlier wasn't going to let me cast anymore. Bugger. Trent carried on, and after we saw a makkie launching itself meters from the water he lobbed his popper in its direction, and was on immediately - his first fish on popper, and a christening of a new rod.

As others have mentioned, the grey coats in Exmouth at the moment are bloody rife. We found some good ground in around 160m and I dropped the jigs, but in 2 trips to that spot I couldn't land a fish. Plenty of hookups but kept getting sharked. With many jigs lost, we decided to move on. Trent did pull one pinkie off that spot which I haven't seen up in Exmouth before. One of the sharks I spent a solid 20mins wrangling to the surface under serious drag, only to have him bust me off 40m from the boat. Probably for the best but still would have liked my jig back!

Whenever we fished the bottom I fished exclusively jigs, which turned out to be a winner. The jigs fairly consistently outperformed, though I did lose a hell of a lot of them to makkie snips and sharkings.

This nice rankin fell to a lamble bait that I'd bought just before the trip (cheers Sam). Trent pulled another rankin and a tusk fish on the same drift.

This trevor smashed a fanky in shallow water, which made for an interesting tussle.

On the last day we hit the islands planning to get a bit of Mak trolling in early, and then hit the bottom again. All day the fishing was exceptionally slow - the fish were all over the sounder, but nothing was interested. The call was made to anchor up near the islands, pick up a small shark for fillets, then head back to the same marks on the change of the tide. We got the shark within 15 minutes of soaking the bait, and then went back to the spots. What a difference the tides made. As soon as we dropped there were fish all around. I dropped a few good fish on the bottom, but what really impressed me was the pelagic jigging. During an hour I jigged a few macks and quite a few cobia off the same spot. They were hitting the jigs on every drift, and thankfully I was actually landing the macks, unlike other days where I was just getting snipped. After that hour the bite died right off, so we called it quits.

Unfortunately we didn't get a whole heap of pics for the trip as the action was concentrated in short bursts and whenever it happened we were more focussed on the fish than the pics! I didn't even bring a camera up with me - so thanks goes to Trent for taking the photos.

All in all was a fun trip, with enough fish caught to get us back up there again - particularly to get that elusive beakie.

The snorkelling, weather and views like this from the lighthouse lookout will also be things that will keep bringing me back. What a great part of WA.

Last Exmouth Day with Deepwater

Probably my last serious day of fishing in Exxy, headed out with good mate Jeff (Deepwater) looking for some table fare.  Got to the deep spot and first drop resulted in a grey band that tangled with the other line, whilst untangling a shark took hold of the bait half way up and busted it off, not a good sign.  Decided to have one more drop which resulted in the inevitable, ruby sharked and time to move. :(

Got to the next spot which was littered with goldband and rosies, managed to pick up 5 and a few bits and pieces before the sharks moved in again.  Must say I have never seen them this bad in my 5 and a bit years in Exxy.  We decided to troll for an hour to try and get back up near the passages incase the northerly came.  Unfortunately no action so zoomed up to the goldy spot and picked up the last of our bag limit, trolled for another hour with no love, tried the trout spots to find the fish well on the bite but just couldn't get through the small stuff to the good fish.  Ended up with a couple more back breaking sharks before deciding to give it another hour and a bit of trolling to get a bill, again with no luck.

Overall a bloody great day and has been awesome sharing the last few years fishing (and drinking) with you Jeffro.

Cheers,

Adam

Metro Rocks - Sat 28/04

Not much to report I'm afraid, other than some wet weather. I was flicking 10-15g lures from my favourite rocks (SoR) hoping the tailor might come on the bite. My day must have been written in the stars, because after half a dozen casts I caught a stargazer. Pretty rare in itself, but to get one on lure was something else. Was only a babby....no more than 10cm, but put a smile on my face. On sundown, got myself a good sized starfish. Had a few nibbles all afternoon, probably herring and they were few and far between. A bit tentative and they never seemed to come back for seconds. Saw some incredible herring acrobatics, so something bigger must have been doing the rounds. Sadly, metal wasn't on the menu. :-)

The day turned rather sour when crossing some rocks in darkness I experienced a 'blowout'. My $2 thongs finally gave way, I am however eternally grateful for the rocks underneath me which (eventually) cushioned my fall. Messed up my toes and back a little, but somehow kept the rod in the air....must be my surivival instincts kicking in.

All this weather, nice swell and fairly calm water makes me wish I had bait with me. Looks like a great night to be out hunting snapper / mulla.

Tight lines.

Marlin At Ocean Beach, Denmark

Good morning all - further evidence of the strength of the current this year and the fact that it's now a distant memory for 2012. Check out the article from the West Australian.

Maybe a good reason to be dragging pushers early next year! Have a great day!

Wild Fishing Trip In Thailand !!! Great fun !!! By BKKGUY

Suhaimi and Zhong Yong , both from SG have booked  a 4 DAYS fishing trip with me.. 2 DAYS wild fishing and 2 DAYS ponds fishing...

At the end of the day, it the wild fishing that they find it more enjoyable and memorable  than stocks pond fishing.

With great nice scenery views and peace of mind away from the city stress , how can anyone resist what the mother nature has to offer us its  nature beauty. ;)

Enjoys the youtube clip I've done for them and  also some of the highlights photos of the trip..;)

Sunset Beach aka 'Pedoz' 24th April

 G'day all

Yesterday me and a couple of mates set up for the night at a spot of mine just a bit north of Sunset Beach, the spot is known as 'Pedoz'.

Couldn't of really asked for a better night weather wise, there was little to no wind during the whole night, the swell was pretty low, and not a bit of weed in sight.  Started fishing at around 5:30 with high hopes of getting into some good fish.  We were quite dissapointed to find there were hundreds of snook smashing every bait we threw out.  Kept 2 or 3 and took the fillets off for bait for later on.  As it got darker the snook all left and the tailor came on the bite.  Only a few small-ish tailor were landed, nothing really photo worthy.  Amongst the tailor we must of landed about 12 soapies all up, all around 30cm.  There bloody anoying at that size.

Once the tailor packed up and left the action was pretty quiet for the next hour.  I had a snook fillet on for bait at this stage, and had a good run from what i suspect would of been a large mulloway, but no hook up. Had another fresh bait out in no time and it got absolutely whacked.  I was hooked up to what felt like a mulloway well over a metre, the headshakes were astounding.  After 20-ish minutes of fighting it i managed to get it washed up onto the beach and i was right, it was a mulloway, just alot smaller than i thought.  It ended up measuring just under a metre, about 95cm, but i was amazed with how fat and heavy the fish was for its length.  I've caught many large mulloway before, and i've never kept one.  I find great satisfaction in releasing the big ones, but i decided it was my turn to keep one.  Will be having it for dinner tonight!

Im horrible at guessing weights, but my guess would of been somewhere between 8-9kg, would this be about right??

Cheers

1st Salmon Cheynes

Got down to Cheynes on Friday arvo, had a flick off the headland, not much around. On Sat I tried with baits on beach to no avail and it didnt look like anyone else was getting a great deal,so I went and chucked lures off headland all day(40gm twisty) still nothing so I put on a 5gm halco twisty and got a shitload of good sized herring, it broke the boredom. I met a bloke called Splitty whoo had got a couple of runs down on the beach and he reckoned just chuck your bait out and wait,(as you do). So, Sunday morn I went down to the beach and Splitty and his Scottish mate were draggin em in ! after the other, it took me a bit but I finally landed one after droppin a couple and ended up with 6 for the day,all 6-8kgs. One of them was on a 40gm twisty when there was a big school in about a foot water.I was happy with 6 but Splitty and his mate were even happier with their 40+ fish. Cant wait to get back down there!!!

LB Wheatbelt Report

Hey all,

All my mates went down south to chase salmon, but sadly I was unable to join them this year. Went for a fish a little closer to home arriving Saturday afternoon and leaving early this morning. Had probably the best beach fishing I have experienced and saw some pretty impressive things - I love how every trip is full of subplots and tall tales!

Arrived to pretty sloppy conditions on saturday afternoon. The water was very murky and there was a lot of weed in the gutter and on the surface. Heading towards low tide, I didn't like my chances. Fished for several hours into dark and as the rain started to arrive my interest in the bottle increased, while my interest in the fishing waned. Funnily enough, as the evening drew on, my memory of the night becomes a little hazy! I landed a mulloway.....my first in 4 years (second overall). It was only 30cm, but still...it's a MULLOWAY! I was stoked. Very next cast I was into something bigger....hook pulled. I was flicking tiny mulie pieces on size 6 hooks, so not really surprised! Think I tangled with a ray at one point, then must have passed out sometime after midnight.

Woke up to much improved conditions. A light easterly and the water was starting to clear. Monster herring were on the bite and I had my 20 in the bucket within half an hour! They were almost all huge bull herring close to 30cm, so put up a great show on light tackle. As the morning wore on I also got into some mullet and whiting.

Tired of the little stuff so put out a fresh fillet. Had a solid hit and soon later a very good tailor on the beach....but just as it left the water it spat the hooks to my frustration. Immediately after a flash of green caught my eye - something about 1m long, torpedo shape, darkish olive green was moving along the shallow gutter at a rate of knots as if pursuing something (maybe my dropped tailor?). My immediate reaction was that I had just seen one of those monster 1m tailor.....definately possible for the area I was in......but I'll never know now.

Persevered for a couple of hours with fillet baits, ended up with a nice 45cm tailor and a gummy shark (around 5kg) in the esky. Good morning session which also included dart (all released) - a species I had never caught before.

Quiet afternoon, then around 5pm something picked up a mullet fillet and swam for deeper water. Felt big thumps and did my best to try and slow it down, but after about a minute the 20lb braid gave out. I didn't get the impression that it was a shark....I'm thinking maybe a sambo or even a snapper by the way it ran.

Sundown bought on an excellent tailor session - only short, about 30 minutes but got half a dozen really good fish. Smallest was around 40cm and biggest 48cm. It shut down soon after, so got an early night.

Next morning was somewhat quiet. More whiting, mullet, dart. Took until around 11am to get a big hit and it felt like I was into something pretty decent again. A few minutes later beached my first ever nor'wester. Pissed off and stoked at the same time, haha! Fish were really finicky, even the whiting were not responding to burley so I took a break for a few hours.

Watched a rec drag netter catch a feed of around 40 yellowfin whiting - all would have been around 35cm. Good bloke, 'Paddy Payne' - chatted to him a lot while I was there and he put me onto some good spots into the area.

Got back into the dart in the afternoon, then about 30 min before sundown a cracker tailor. Went 49cm a PB....actually cooking them all up shortly for tea! As soon as the sun hit the water the rod got smashed and I was confident I was into another great tailor. Instead beached yet another nor'wester!!

Sundown session produced a lot of small tailor - biggest would have been around 35cm. I let them all go, pointless as I had an esky full of fillets and you can only eat so much, given they don't freeze well. Hindsight....forgot to keep one of the little'ns for bait. Oh well....

Went quiet for a couple of hours and I thought long and hard about sleeping....but patience was rewarded. A massive run....this one I have no doubt was a big shark. No stopping it, cut through the TD Sensor in about 5 seconds flat, so I swapped over to 40lb mono for the rest of the night.

Landed a nice Eagle Ray - would have been 10-15kg and swam away strong. Then tangled with one of the big resident sting rays. Cut the line while he was a couple of metres off the beach after fighting for 10-15 mins. Many people seem disappointed at catching rays...but I always find them a great challenge and the ultimate tackle tester!!! I have a rubbish old Ugly Stick low mount and Shimano Alivio combo....it's cheap and nasty....the braid is worth more than the outfit I reckon! But it holds up pretty well as an all round surf combo.

Night drew on....there was a fox on the beach hunting for crabs, scared the living daylights out of me as it walked right up to me without realising I was there. Saw lots of shooting stars and waited......

Took until around 1am but all of the sudden the gutter came to life. Started with a few little taps, then something much more serious. Beached another gummy shark....this one much bigger at probably 7kg. About 10m later, a decent sized snook....perfect bait for my mulloway. Fillet goes out and about 15m later the drag slowly gives. Can feel something gently pulling so slowly reel in and have myself a really good sized occy. Great surprise and tasty snack for the coming days!!

Sent the other snook fillet out and waited. About an hour later a massive hit on the bait, but whatever it was didn't like something and dropped it, never to return. Could have been anything, but I can't help but think that this hit was none other than a mullagore. Never mind, I'll be back up that way again when the tailor are spawning and catch my mulla then!!!!

Thing shut down, so I slept for a couple of hours then got up before sunrise. Nothing really happening, burleyed up and the herring came on, but I was a bit over filleting them so decided to pack up and head home. Coming down Indian Ocean drive has a massive blowout, tyre shredded. Took me 1.5 hours just to change the thing....problems trying to get the vehicle jacked up safely, but got there in the end. Sour end to an awesome trip. I know there were more fish but memory eludes me....my esky is absolutely chockas with fillets all bagged up and ready to go!! :-)

Gday!

Well our second annual trip to the Thevenard has been and gone and oh how I love that place.

Me, my partner and my brother headed over on a Tuesday for 7 nights which ended up being 8 due to being blown out for a couple of days, seeing us having a few beers on the island and throwing a few chromies and stick baits around the island to be smashed up the small schools of Trevs and small GT's.

The day we headed over to the island from Onslow the weather couldnt have been any better, so it was decided that as soon as the boat was unpacked and into the chalet we were to head out!

Getting the rods ready to go

One of the fish to board and my brother was pretty stocked!

For only the couple of hours we were out, not a bad haul.

We managed to get out after the 2 days to the wind and then 2 days of no wind but nothing was on the bite!!!

A nice coral trout (Bagafillets), there were plenty of these things around and well up over the 600mm mark plus

Plastic munchin Cobia!

Another Baldie for my brother this one took a nuclear chicken grub!

All in a days work...

My biggest for the trip

These little buggers kept you busy in between the big ones, which end up being a pain the arse!

Another days haul

You had to be quick!

Our last day, we were going to head out to one of our spots but instead, which was a good idea by me was to stick close and work a bit of ground to try and nail some more baldies, with the other half nailing 3 the biggest 630mm... lucky bugger!

The last day, not bad!

So all in all, we could say we had a pretty good time. Again, Drew and Traci and the crew on the island making you feel welcome and helping you out as much as possible.

Hope you enjoy the photos!
