General Fishing Chat

2nd Deep Drop attempt.

Well we needed to get out for one last fish before the ban & Monday looked the goods. It was going to be the usual hit the 40's off Mandurah and see what comes. But the predictions were looking great, so we decided to stow the big gear for a deep drop. Especially after attending the Oceanside/Sounder night the other week. Doug & I were primed for another go at it.

Got to Mary St. ramp at 5:30am, and hit the water. We cruised out in perfect conditions and the call was made to go deepish. So we made our way out,and came across a bit of ground that looked good in 88m so decided to have a drop. Not long after Doug got a 55cm Pinky, so we at least had a fish in the esky if the deeper stuff failed.

We got out to a spot that looked promising in about 175m to 195m. So definately not Super Deep by any means. But we were picking up fish on the top of the drop off as Ryan had explained on the night. However getting the drift right took a bit getting used to. We were getting bites fairly regularly, and I got a nice Nannygai, but no Cod.

Decided to have a look a little wider out to 230m but didn't find anything worth dropping on, but still did just for the hell of it. So went back to the other area just as the wind really dropped off. Set a drift and Doug was on, fingers were crossed for our first Greyband but it never gave up, right till it was in the net. A big Queen Snapper, it went 80cm and was caught in 190m of water. I didn't know they were out that deep!! Next drift Doug is on again with something even more weighty and with more fight. I decide to leave the my rod in the holder and get the net organised for him and sure enough my rod gets hit. So it's each to their own, mine felt ok but wasn't pulling string as Doug's did. Mine hit the surface just before his and it was a cracker Nannygai (I think, correct me if I'm wrong)-64cm. Doug's ends up being a hefty Amberjack.

So we got our bag, but still missed the Greyband, but feel we done ok. Chucked a couple of skirts out for a couple of miles on the way home and got one Striped Tuna & dropped one.

Beaut day on the water.

Cheers

Chris

Sorry about the sideways photos. Your necks might feel like my arms!!!

Any Transducer Wizards?

I just got a Furuno 627 with P66 and currently have a Humminbird 798 with the transducer mounted. I have a Seafarer V-Sea which has a factory built pod on the back.

Obviously I want the P66 in the prime location as I only want the Humminbird ducer for GPS and side scan. I was going to place it next to the existing ducer but the current one is already just off the swing radius of the prop and the P66 needs to be 75mm away. Not much I can do about the 75mm distance but I'll have to place the P66 where the Humminbird ducer is as the side of the pod directly to the right (starboard) is curved.

I've got two question for all of you versed in the black art of ducer placement. Will the P66 be ok within 75mm of the swing radius of the prop and will the Humminbird ducer be better placed in between the P66 and the keel or should I place it on the port side. I'll only be using the Humminbird side scan at low speeds when bream fishing or chasing tailor etc adjacent to exposed reef.

left the old school today

went out with skipper Al today from two rocks and I thought bugger no bait today, dropped lines at 6am,had on a z man N chicken on a BJ lead head, nice heavy one hit the bottom bango a nice 630mm dhuie [my first on a placcy] which was soon in the ice box, then had a hit which turned out to be a cuttlefish? it went quiet after Al caught a under size dhie so we went out a bit, thought I would try a jig I borrowed off BJ on sunday, hit the bottom and bamgo a nice 700mm dhie my first on a jig and first try for one, the skipper says f... bait but I only got a nice flathead on the jig, we did try for awhile on the 3 mile but very quiet, fantastic day out on a calm ocean, gave the skipper the smaller one and we were both happy, might have one more go for pinkies tomorrow night and that will be that, easy fishing placcys and jigs hey

Replacement Guides

Hi All,

I have a rod with several dodgy guides that need replacing. I would like to replace them all with something better. I've looked online and can find kits that keep the price down for multiple guides, but cannot locate a retailer in Perth that sells them. Does anyone know of one that sells guides in a pack?

Other option is to buy a broken rod from someone and transfer the guides - anyone have a broken rod with decent guides they would unload at a cheap price? My rod is a 9ft lure casting rod, and if replacing guides like for like would need 9 guides including the tip.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers,

Daryn

Marine Radio Issue?

 Hi Guys,

My boat is almost ready for Summer now, but I had an issue with the radio that was fitted by the previous owner - it was an old radio, so i decided as it is safety kit to replace it with a new GME unit.

I replaced it yesterday, and have the same issue - It sounds scratchy, has really bad reception and I cannot raise VN6KC from my house in Safety bay???

I managed to raise them on the old radio last weekend, but they advised me to replace the unit as the reception was really scratchy, and they could hardly hear me.., now the same with the new unit?

Does the radio use the water as the groundplane for better reception, or do i have another issue here?

See attached pics of the antenna, mount and connections - all look good to me...?

Tested the cable to see if there was a short or open circuit, and it all tests fine..

Sounds like squelch noise and scratchy, and the engine is not running during the test??

Any advice would be appreciated, or a name of someone around Rocko who could help?

Thanks

Seaboard

Does anyone know where I can get Seaboard or any other high density polyethylene board in Perth? I only need a 200x200mm offcut at best. I need to extend the plate behind my outboard to fit a new transducer

Cheers

boat delivery - not good enough

Bit of a rant here. I recently bought a new boat. it was expensive but its what I wanted for years. Well the delivery wasn't the best. Some things you can live with but others things just burn you up like how the dealers put the boat rego stickers on. Very ordinary to say the least. I did complain so they mailed me out some more of the cheap and nasty variety to install myself.
Well after looking at my boat each day in the driveway and always seeing the crap stickers I ordered some custom ones and did it myself. My point is I shouldn't have had to.
here's the before and after pics.

bit sharky on sat

bloody sharks couldnt get away from them

tyrnos 30

Hi Everyone, havent posted for a while but I am wondering if anyone has a link or information on servicing a Shimano Tyrnos 30. I have done a search and also looked on Youtube but can't find any info.

Life during the ban - What's your new target species?

It could be a long couple of months, too long not to fish - got to wondering what everyone else will be chasing...

Cheers

Seb's First Dhuie

Took a young bloke from work out for a fish on Saturday. His dream had been to catch a Dhuie, he'd tried a couple of charters in the past without success.
Nailed his first and not a bad effort @ 76cm.
Won't tell ya the weight.............cause someone will only tell me my scales are out ! lol

Best all round braid kg

If you were going to buy a 1500m spool of braid, what would be your breaking strain? I was thinking of 40lb, should cover offshore and beach comfortably.

Tailor and bits !!

Shot out with a mate for night fish seeing if the

tailor have fired up yet !! Was bit choppy

but like I said to my mate bit more wind would

be the go !!! So over the anchor and started up

1/2m or 500mm either way it launched boatside

and threw the gangs !! Anyway lost another

back !!! Good know that they should start to fire

up soon

Shark bite

I am glad to see that the young bloke who was bitten on the foot by a Grey Nurse shark is recovering well and will soon be back on the water.

I also hope the Grey Nurse has a quick recovery from having a couple of teeth extracted when it bit the young bloke.

Now some months back another surfer was bitten by a small shark in the same general area, and luckily he to only received minor wounds.

Now I have read in a number of good quality publications that it is not recommended that you go swimming surfing etc. in amongst schooling fish, the reason for this is that predators/sharks like to feed on schooling fish and if you are amongst them you could find yourself being mistaken for a fish and bitten. As I'm sure in my own mind that is what has happened to this lad.

River/estuary mouths are also mentioned, again in quality publications as places that are known hunting areas for sharks, put together with schools of fish, in this case herring and you have the right combination for something like this to happen.

My be the SLSA should place aa sign near the club house warning surfers that if blah blah blah conditions are prevailing you should be aware of the dangers the conditions promote.

I am glad to see that the general population is not screaming and dancing around calling for the mass killing of poor old Grey Nurse sharks, the poor buggers got a hell of a hammering when power heads, smokies etc first came on the scene.

Now, I am not having a shot at the SLSA of WA (Way back I was a member of North Cottesloe SLSC)so I'm well aware of the good service they do for the community at large, however to site a club in this location (pyramid beech) I think was not thought through a lot, there is just about always a strong rip running near the south wall of the cut and this has taken one life already.

It is my hope that the people who use this swimming beech use a lot of safety awareness when using it.

Just my view on things.

Dawesville Cut and Canning Bridge

The last few days ive fished down at Canning Bridge and then at the cut today.

On Wednesday i went down to Canning Bridge for a fish in between 3pm and 8pm. Caught about 20 Bream ranging from 18cm to 34cm, I also caught a Cobbler which was quite surprising and then leter on in the day, I threw some twistys and caught a couple of undersize Tailor.

The next day i went back there to try my luck if i could get anything a bit bigger, that day i fished from about 11am through to 2pm it was a much slower day I only caught a few small bream and alot of those yellowtail grunter.

Then today I went to Mandurah for the boat show, i thought it was a pretty good event, we left there at about 3 and headed to the cut to see if it actually was "dead". Once i got there i checked if anything was catching anything and no one was catching anything apart from the odd trumpeter. I set up my gear along the wall and got fishing, straight away i was onto the fish, everyone around me was so surprised. At the end at about 7pm i had caught a dozen KG's ranging from 27cm up to 38cm half a dozen herring, a couple of sand whiting and some tarwhine, all in all its been a good couple of days fishing.

Also im looking for a new land based spot that i can go to tomorrow and hopefully catch something, i dont rlly mind what fish i catch just something apart from blowies aha, maybe some skippy or more bream or something.

Cheers for reading and hopefully some of you guys can help me out a bit,

ill have the pictures up tomorrow hopefully

 Hey guys,

We Lost a wheel on the way in to two rocks yesterday  sheared all 5 studs in one hit, brand new disks all round and didn't hit any big holes on the way up , got home and noticed a  few nuts on the other side were loose as well so im wondering if some one was trying to pinch the wheels? We saved our selves some time drove the boat back to Ocean reef ramp to pull her out, would have been a long tow home other wise. I'm not sure where it happened somewhere close to the ramp if any one spots a mag wheel can you please grab it and pm me, I will repay in beer still went fishing even though i was really pissed off, still managed a nice feed of  Dhuies, Baldies and  Breaksea Cod. 2016 Montebello Islands trip with Blue Lightning Charters

 Hi Guys,

I have currently booked for a charter next year with Blue Lightning Charters with Chad Mills for November to the Montebello Islands, from Karratha - seems like most of the year was already booked so had to get in fast to secure a spot! I went with Chad Mills and the boys at Blue Lightning last year in September and had an absolute ball. I am looking for a total of 8 people to come with me for the 7 night charter aboard to fish for everything from Mackerel, Coral Trout, Rankin Cod and more, as well as the Giant Trevally. November is set to be a key time for these hard-hitting fish, despite the heat, and I am hoping to put the tackle to the test! I am taking deposits now, you can lock in your spot before they all go, please PM me for further information, or, e-mail me at . I am happy to discuss tackle requirements, payments, and the general experience, whatever questions you have about the trip. Last year we did have one lady on board, and the charter does cater for this, so don't feel that it is a guys-only trip if any women are interested.

***Edit***

Information below is from Blue Lightning charters  (I work at Compleat Angler Nedlands, not the charter, as I have been made aware I didn't explain that above. Thanks!)

Two rocks boat ramp

Hey, has anyone been to two rocks in last few days, just wondering how chaotic it's likely to be around 7.30 tomorrow morning given its school holidays.

Furuno Recall

I just rang CH Smith to discuss my options of either sourcing a 585 and buying a 1KW ducer from them or buying a new 627 with 600w ducer.

Very interesting that he said that as of last week Furuno are recalling the 627s but wasn't sure why and that they currently aren't available due to the recall. Has anyone had their's recalled and do you know what the issue was as I'm not keen to drop my cash until I know the issue has been well and truely sorted.

Clover cottage

Has anyone been there recently. Are the private dams good? ( pay ones) info would be great . Break out old fly rod.

Nor pinkies

Went out with Al yesterday evening,  got a couple of pinkies this one went 680 mm, very nice night out.nice tea tonite

Boat Ramp Conundrum

Gents - as it's mine and most of Perth's last chance for a crack at demersal's this weekend, the weather has been kind to us and is looking prime for a fish on Saturday. I've done a couple of mid-week trips to two rocks recently and have found some nice ground directly west of the mariner which is where I'll be fishing this weekend.

As I've never fish two rocks on the weekend but having read plenty of horror stories about the wait required to launch/retrieve, it's turned me off a bit. So I've come up with two options; 1) aim for a 5am launch at two rocks and hopefully beat the crowds on the way out or 2) launch at Mindarie and motor a few extra nauticals in the boat hopefully avoiding a big crowd altogether.

What are peoples thoughts on the above options?

Cheers in advance
