i will name and shame them
Submitted by petermac on Sun, 2013-05-26 19:49got my brand new boat on Thursday (cost 38K) last week , gps echo sounder has a volt drop problem I specifically ordered this boat with a tilt down console so I could get it in my boat port, first time I tilt the console down (today) all the wiring rips out from the distribution board , shoddy shoddy work I say not happy if they don't sort it out I will have to explain what social media can do to a company like them and then name the supplier , I am a retired elect intsro tech and don't think I should have to sort this out myself( I could but why should I have to) but I do know I would have done a better job than them setting up the boat

What is my tub (Other than a mistake)? The POS Project
Submitted by Swompa on Sun, 2013-05-26 18:47Howdy All, Well after realising that I am impatient, I have purchased a pile of fiberglass and timber on a bit of galvanise coated rust, that has wheels.... There is plenty of work to do. The trailer has no rollers and thus has the boat sitting on the side supports, which are rollers, one of which has pushed through a longitudinal causing it to rot and further collapse, meaning that the back 1m of the boat is hanging 10mm down....yes plenty of work, but nothing that a bit of cutting, grinding and glassing cant fix. Initial cost was $150 for the hull and 'trailer', $220 to tow it from Ellenbrook (who the hell lives that far away) to Thornlie. First priority is to get it off the trailer as all it is doing is distorting the fairly unsupported hull, then glass in some new frames, then a deck THEN figure out how to do a console/cabin of sorts. BUT can some one please let me know what sort of hull it is? I was originally thinking an early Guardian but I have not seen anything similar. LOA is 5500mm Beam is 2060mm at the transom

Transducer question
Submitted by JoRn on Sun, 2013-05-26 18:23Hi guys,
quick question for you. Tried researching this specific question to no avail.
i am currently overseas and have access to a furuno 288. This is the 295 equivalent but made for the Asia region.
it comes with a 50hz 50B-6B 1kw tranny. My question is I have an Ali boat so it will have to be transom mounted. If I got the mount fabricated would this work? Or is the transducer useless.
will a 50hz tranny suffice or should I look at getting a 200hz one as well?
thanks for your help in advanced

Happy fishing!!
need Okuma spinning reel spares.
Submitted by Redbakk on Sun, 2013-05-26 11:58Hi everyone, I own several Okuma spinning reels....AvengerABF80,Quadra QF-80,Fina-80.....which require new line roller bearings....little tiny things with miniscule balls in them
......the last time time I was able to get one, I got the whole assembly, bail arm wire, roller, bearing and washer, all together as one unit, I forget what I paid for it.
Now believe it or not they have different part numbers but side by side they are exactly the same and can be interchanged with each other BUT the trouble is sourcing the spares.....has anybody know where you can get them in Australia online or whatever.
I have not tried bearing service just to get the bearing.....but I am open to suggestions.
Tried the Okuma web site but they don't seem to have a contact point and I'm wondering if they don't deal directly with the public, only through dealers?
Thanks in advance, Phil.

Submitted by petermac on Sat, 2013-05-25 21:16I had a humingbird 788 gps/ sounder fitted to my new boat before I picked it up (Thursday just gone) I have noticed that if it is switched on then I start up the outboard it freezes and the screen semi greys out and I cant switch it of the way I have to fix it is turn the outboard of switch the battery isolator of to off then back on to get it to turn of then restart the engine then turn it back on , I don't think this should happen its not wired thru the ignition my mate and I are both instrument electrical technician's and cant get our heads around it surely it shouldn't be that voltage sensitive that it freezes when there is a load applied to the battery when the outboard is started also if any one can tell me how to manually enter gps coordinates in to it would be good the C/D it came with totally not user friendly my lowerance on my old boat never did this should have stuck with them

2 ppl rescued off Ocean reef
Submitted by wangler on Sat, 2013-05-25 14:56 Apparently 2 blokes were rescued about 33km's out from Ocean reef this morning. A wave swamped their 18 ftr and sank (20km's out) in about 3min . All they had were their life jackets, epirb went down with the boat, and were being swept out to sea. They had been in the water for about 2 1/2 hours before my mate heard their cries for help and rescued them. Got hold of sea rescue who came and airlifted them I believe.
Happy for a happy ending.
Coincidence or what. For some reason yesterday, I went to see my mate at work, just popped in. While I was there he ask if I have any marks 30km off Ocean reef. He never fishes out of there so had none. I gave him a couple Ihad not fished in years.....
ps my mate only got 3 flathead
I will be waiting to see if there is any news tonight
cheers

VHF problems
Submitted by bobdefitter on Fri, 2013-05-24 10:17My first post, hope it works better than my VHF
I have a GME GX600 VHF marine transceiver which is not transmitting and receiving on the channel it is tuned too.
I only use VHF as safety back up when I can not log on 27 mHz.
About 2 months ago I tried to log on using channel 73 VHF and was promptly told of by tugs working barges in Cockburn Sound.
Last Wednesday I requested Rockingham Sea Rescue for a radio check for my VHF using the 27 mHz for the request.
The Rockingham radio operator eventually found my VHF using channel 13 for his transition while my VHF was tuned to channel 73.
I spent the rest of the day with my VHF on scan mode and found sea rescue conversations coming through on VHF channel 14.
When I returned to Woodman’s Point I logged of using channel 14 VHF and was told by the operator that he was receiving me loud and clear on channel 73.
If you were on the water on Wednesday you may have heard these conversations.
Next time I am on the water I will request a radio check on channel 16 VHF.
Has any had the same problem with a GME GX 600 and found a solution to it.
Also dose any know the listening times only for Channel 16
Bobdefitter standing by on this channel

Perth to derby trip went to shit
Submitted by johnno67 on Thu, 2013-05-23 21:45Well where do I start left Perth 4am, 6th may for our three week fishn trip to exmouth and then to derby that we had planned for six months . Hooked up the cruiser and the boat and did good time and got to carnarvon by 2 o'clock time dicked around a bit because we decided to change the Ali bait board height to suit the bolt on barbi which was too high so found local guy in carnarvon to do some Ali welding for us 50 bucks what a bargain.
Ok time for some r&r so we checked in at the Gascoyne for a night had Agee beers and anise feed at the pub. Next morning up at sparrows fart and head our way to exmouth for a weeks Fishn. got to exmouth at 1pm and the weather was lookn shit hot so unloaded all the car and boat into our villa we had booked at exmouth villas and was toungeing for a fish. Got some bait and head straight down to bundegi boat ramp was on the water by 2.30 and out to the back of the murions for a bottom bounce.
first drop double header gt and a big chinaman couple of sharks and a few red throats ok we got fishn chips tonight with the red throats. wind started to blow up it was time for back to the ramp. All excited for the next day, got up but the wind was howling and so was the rain so that was it. the weather stayed with us for the next week so we got cabin fever but the beer was cold.
15 th may head up to port hed;and and realized when we got there we were one swag short of what we left exmouth with shit some backpackers gonna be happy finding that on the road. it was new and never had been slept in. got there at 2 in the afternoon to meet up with a couple of my mates that live there and had organized our derby trip which they do every year. Got all the boats ready to head to derby on the 17th ready to drop in the water on the 18th and purchased a new swag. My mate put us up in port hedland for the 2 nights and lucky for us his wife was home for five days from the master chef show so she Cooked up a storm for us.
17th got to derby three boats booked into the hotel with quiet night ready for the next days journey. Up at sparrows fart again down to the derby boat ramp to get in at high tide. Here we go a trip off a lifetime made koolan islands in 3 and bit hours for a fuel up at the bargers $650 for a forty four drum so off to raft point we go. arrived at 2.30 and were keen for a fish. the weather was hot no clouds in the sky no wind this is perfect. Did a 2 hours bottom bouncing and were reeling in fingermark one after the other now this the shit. Found a creek to raft up the three boats for the night cookn up fresh fish and a few beers we were stoked.
1 o'clock in the morning this is where the trip went to shit. a massive storm hit and we broke anchor howling wind and rain had to separate all three boats and find own anchorage but couldn't hold anchor still so this was the beginning of no sleep for the next three days. So the next morning we headed another 15 mile to some creeks to try and find some shelter but got smashed by the wind and rain again no sleep shit. That's it in the morning we were sure if we headed to the horizontal falls we would get some shelter. guess what, wrong again we spent the whole night awake bailing water out of the boats with a frypan .so the decision was made in the morning to cut the trip short by five days and head back to koolan fuel up again and back to derby with soaked swags sleepin bags and clothes we were wrecked . Sorry about the book I've just written but I'm half pissed sittn in broome at cable beach Getty some r&r.
