Coral Bay
Submitted by oldy on Thu, 2014-10-16 05:36Anyone else experienced the plague proportions of North West Blowies we encountered yesterday in Coral Bay. We fished all depths out to 100 metres and got hit every time. $$$ of gear gone. Will give it another go today as a bad day on the water beats working.

Submitted by FishingKing14 on Wed, 2014-10-15 19:44Hey all!
I have recently just purchased a 3.95m dinghy. I'm planning on taking it out very soon however I need some advice. Where should I be looking to target bread and butter species such as herring squid and tailor? (I'm freo based). How should I target these species? And 25 litres of fuel with a 15hp 4 stroke outboard how much distance can I cover?
thanks guys

After a cray fishing partner/decky SOR
Submitted by niloc1984 on Wed, 2014-10-15 18:54Im wanting to get out this season and catch some crays! Have a 4.8 centre console with new 50hp and Lowrance 7HDI, 2 x jarrah pots and 1 x plastic pot.
Really after someone reliable with some knowledge on cray fishing to head out before or after work and set/pull pots a few days each week.
I really don't want to have to go out by myself or set them with someone and head out by myself to pull them. Im home in Bertram by 4 most day and the boat is always ready to go.
PM me if anyone is up for it. Always good to meet new fishing buddies and site members.

sea rescue
Submitted by tangles on Wed, 2014-10-15 15:53not fishing related but for those that are involved with sea rescue units im curious if you have ever been stuffed around by DFAS or any of the other people in charge of these volunteer groups.
The reason I askis that kalbarri sea rescue was involved in a few coverups and dishobest dealings and sackings of a couple dedicated and long serving members and a couple of incidences including one where a member of the public died and due to the incompitence of the jetski operator at the time ciuld not be saved.
The president of the sea rescue. Mr barry kewell has been the one at the forefront of all the coverups and lies and now has been awarded sea rescue commander of the year for the state.
I am not whinging or trying to stir shit cause I have beeinvolved in this from the start with a cpl of good mates who were crusified at the stake for opening up the truth.
Where or who do you turn to when coveruups are defended byDFAS.POLICE.STATE INVESTIGATORS.
you are left nowhere to turn to.
I have watched a mate of 12years and longtime serving member of vmrin this state get thrown to the lions because he told the truth and now is a brojen shattered man with no one to help because the dpts that are there to I vestigate these claims dismissed all the evidence and claims to silence what I feel and have seen as a huge problem with not only this group but the dpts that run them.

Targetting Perth Metro Makos
Submitted by Dopolo on Wed, 2014-10-15 11:09Interested in knowing if many anglers target makos out of perth metro.
Being from victoria makos were in reasonable numbers during summer months when arrow squid and coota were around.
Wondering if there are any mako numbers in wa, how people target them and what to look for as I havent seen arrow squid or coota around these waters

Demersal Ban details
Submitted by Jim on Wed, 2014-10-15 02:47Howdy,
Please dont take this post the wrong way, I defintely want to stay within the rules of the demersal ban and look after the protected fish but can I target KG or sambos on paternoster rigs with big sinkers?
Ive just bought my first half decent tub and my brothers and myself want to catch a big fish, weathers looking good friday. If jigs and plastics dont work, I want to have the bait option up my sleeve if we are fishless. Will I be breaking the d ban rules in anyway fishing with mulie or squid strips on the bottom?
is there a maximum hook size or anything?
Thanks.
Ive read a few fisheries pages and cant seem to find anything.

Windmills Location
Submitted by narazarthx on Tue, 2014-10-14 17:46Hello Fishwrecked!
This is my first post on the forum so hello all.
I've tried to have a look at previous posts but couldn't get anything specific on the topic.
I was hoping to go for some whiting fishing on friday (on the boat) considering the demersal ban. I remember about 10 or so years ago I went to roughly 2NM north of of the northmost windmill and it was just whiting galore and I remember having the time of my life.
Since then, everytime i've been around there i've had no luck at all and haven't caught anywhiting at all.
My question:
When people say "windmills" where do they mean? North, South or on the windmills?
Thanks

Advice on a Combo
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Tue, 2014-10-14 07:46Hey guys. Rather than create a new thread I am after some advice on a combo to that will allow me to have some fun with snapper but pull big dhuys off the bottom. It will be for the occasion chance I get to go out on my cousin's and a mate's boat, some shore based snapper fishing and fishing for mulloway from my dinghy in the Swan. I also want the reel to go on a beach rod to fling out weighted mulies but this is secondary to getting a good boat combo.
After some research I am looking at a Stradic FJ 5000 paried with a T curve deep jig 200 or 300.
Is anyone running with a similar combo (or either rod or reel) and have any thoughts on it?
Cheers

Last Pinkies, and the Final One was Quite Big + 2014 Pink Photo Selection
Submitted by Mick C on Mon, 2014-10-13 22:11With the ban approaching, and a forecast light easterly yesterday afternoon, we decided to head out and see if we could pick up some last pinkies for the season. Conned the “rejuvenated” young one, after his marathon hauling in of the big angry fish the day before was softened by the heap of prize vouchers and the many hours of sleep, to come out again for the last pink hunt. I was a little bit suspect when we got to the ramp and were facing a south westerly but put my faith in the forecast (schoolboy error) and when we rounded the rock wall it was a little blowy but not too bad. The trip out was sloppy on the inside of the 3 Mile but once in the ocean, the chop was subdued and the swell was not too large. Got on the spot about 5.15pm to breezy but not unfishable conditions.
I had found one half used burley package that I had salvaged from a previous trip hidden in the freezer so it came along. I knew there was only about 30-35 minutes in the pack so didn’t set it out there straight away as the sun was still high in the sky and it seems the pinkies start to feed when the light changes. I also had the fresh sand whiting from the comp the day before but saved them as well. Needless to say, in the first half hour we got nothing except increasing wind speed.
As the sun was getting low, out came the burley. Again I was convinced of the value of a good burley mix as within 5 minutes of it going in the water the baitrunner with floating mulie peeled off. We boated a 400mm pink which was soon followed by a 500mm model that were both returned (500mm is not a keeper as they always shrink a few mm). This inspired the bringing out of the fresh whiting and they were lucky to get anywhere near the bottom as the ravenous pinkies were all over them. Boated a few more between 400-500mm and then got a 530mm keeper. All this time, the wind was continuing to pick up and the poor old Minn Kota was getting to its tolerance levels (the spot lock function is designed to keep you within a 5m radius but if you are moved off the spot by wind, current or swell and it cannot get back to it in a reasonable time at full power then it will shut down).
So, we started to play the game of listening for the Minn to shut down over the howl of the wind and then starting it again, again, again and again – it was almost like drifting. The chop was also developing in earnest and we were surrounded by whitecaps and the characteristic short sharp waves. The pinkies were on however so we persisted in fairly ordinary conditions that we probably shouldn’t have been in.
What the hell, go for broke and I picked out the biggest whiting I had (about 230mm) and snelled it up. Cast into the now diminishing burley trail and within a minute the baitrunner was peeling line characteristic of a big pink hit. Luckily I had the rod in my hand and could engage the reel when I was sure he had it in his gob. Once hooked, this thing took off at a rate of knots and easily stripped 50m in an instant. I initially thought shark, mack or tuna on the strength of its first run but was quite relieved when I actually started to pull it up and felt those characteristic head shakes. Enthusiasm faltered a bit when it went on a series of screaming runs as my mind turned back to the day before and all the sambos we had caught that behaved in exactly the same way. Nevertheless, it was a solid fish that needed respect so I started to work it back to the boat with care (amongst a few more Minn shut downs).
After what seemed like quite a long time, I finally saw mono leader. Our net had been destroyed by recent big angry fish so all we had were a set of lip grips. The fish headed under the boat so we still didn’t know what it was although we had the leader back. It was slowly brought into view when we saw the gob of a big pink just under the boat. In a further twist, there was only one hook in the fish (just holding on) and the other one had decided to attach to the rail under the boat. There were quite a lot of nervous moments as we tried to get the hook off the rail and the lip grips into a very large mouth and secure them with multiple tries in the strong wind and increasing sea. When they finally set and we hauled it aboard there was more than a little relief as we checked out the size of it.

Anyway, the young one was focussed on getting a size pink for himself so it was back down again. I must add that conditions had really gone to sh*t at this stage, Minn had no hope and we had waves starting to crash over the front of the boat. To his credit he did get a few undersized pinkies in the most trying of sea conditions. When we finally had enough, much earlier than we would have liked, we had landed 9 pinkies, 2 genuine keepers with one of them being a large model indeed.
Let’s just say the trip back to the ramp was a particularly unpleasant experience. Couldn’t do much more than 5 knots in the Hornet in constant wind and spray. The lowlight was a breaking wave on the starboard side that smashed me and I was completely drenched. A cold, wet and miserable trip in but at no time was it unsafe as we just operated to the conditions and didn’t give a stuff about how long it took to get back. It was nice to get inside the 3 Mile with the wind at our back and shorten the trip however.
We hadn’t really paid much attention to the pink as there were too many other things going on. When we got home, and I struggled to get it out of the live bait well, its size was starting to become apparent. We got it to the table and it measured the whole length of our size guide sticker of 900mm. On the manual scales and it went 8.2kg. Not my biggest one, but very close and clearly a quality fish. When you looked at it next to the 530mm pink, the little one seemed like a dwarf.

Below are a few photos of select pinkies we have landed this season. I will write a story soon about the techniques we used as I am happy to share what works for us. At the end of the season, we got more than 100 and who would have thought this was possible – we returned a lot and only kept enough to eat. Yes, we have put the effort in but they have to be there. How good is WA fishing.

KOTC report for team Sea-Kem
Submitted by sea-kem on Sun, 2014-10-12 20:51Well it's done and dusted but man what an action packed few days. It was awesome to catch up with all the boys down in Dunsborough again, Liam, Brendan, Dave and Damo to name a few and great meeting Timmo as well. Firstly I want to thank you guys for your hospitallity and helpful ideas. Loved the pub session Liam and ahh I'll shout the coffee when in town next ;) The ahem talent in the pub was just an added bonus lol Secondly the comp was run in a smooth professional manner, it's a credit to you guys and we are grateful for the effort. I know you guys would have put in imeasureable hours to get it off the ground and we will be back next year for another crack. We hit town on Wednesday and was straight out for a fish but was a bit lumpy out wide so no fish. Thursday was much the same so decided to go light and get a good bag of fat Whiting. Well Friday was looking the goods so hit it early and man what a day. I think we caught about a dozen different species and came home with a Pearler bag. The Blackarse were 470 and 480 mm.
Happy boy!
Saturday and the first day of the comp, she was bloody lumpy again so decided to go for some Whiting and caught a nice bag including this fella
Last day today and saw that the sea would ease around lunchtime so headed out late. Ended up with some Sambo fun on the light gear with Rory nailing this sucker, a good arm stretch for the boy, he was stuffed afterwards lol, but the grin says it all.
He topped off the day with this beautiful Harlequin, vino bottle gives you an idea of the size of this one.
Looking forward very much to making this a yearly thing, thanks again guys ![]()

Bream on lures
Submitted by lachieH on Sun, 2014-10-12 19:10Hi everyone, over the past 6 months or so I've been chasing bream on baits with a couple rods but kept myself occupied with some hard bodies and softies. But I have only ever caught 1 yellowtail grunter on them. A problem probably is that I have never covered a distance throwing out lures but I think that there is more to it.
Firstly I am using a variety of hard bodies. I have 2 atomic hardz breamshad40's which are pretty much clear with red eyes. I also have 5 lures which are 50mm one which is pinky with a white belly and black dots, two with a white bottom, grey middle with scales and a top darker greyish colour. The last one is also 50mm with a dark brown top, light brown middle again with scales and a black bottom. I am working them resionably slow with a few twitches. I am connecting them to a 2m fluoro leader and a lefty's loop around the split ring.
with the soft plastics I am using 1/24 ounce jig heads and 1/16 ounce jig heads, in size 1 hooks. The first colour of the grubs are 2 inch, dark brown with shiny glittery stuff in the middle. The other soft plastic is 1 1/2 inches and has a clear/white/green with glitter in the middle aswell. I think I might order some size 2 jig heads instead of size 1 for them because they are a bit big. I work them slowly with twitches after letting it sink for a bit. When I'm fishing off the shore I usually let it sink. Then twitch it and let it hit the bottom.
so if anybody realises anything that is wrong with my technique or if I am not moving around enough to find the fish myself, please let me know. I have been told that if you walk along the shore, and see where the tide has come out to and you also see there cracked mussel shells and other natural things that bream eat on high tide, to cast around that area because there shod be fish near there. I haven't tried this before because This morning I watched a fishing wa episode in the sean getting bream on lures.
So if anybody has anything to say about my technique or the lures themselves, please let me know because I really want to crack the code of using lures.
thanks,
lachie

The Fauna in Australia, Only would happen in Australia.
Submitted by Lowza on Sun, 2014-10-12 14:53A morning fishing trip to Mandurah,Western Australia. 4 Interesting Animal Encounters. 1st Encounter, Tims Thicket. Hit a dolphin on the head with a richter plug (by accident). 2nd Encounter a dugite (snake) almost attacking me while I was pumping up my tyres in the dunes. 3rd Encounter wading the mandurah estuary near the owen street boat ramp in waste deep water going for whiting on poppers, and no bullshit a shark of atleast 8 Feet was thrashing around a 100 meters away from us unbelievably scary shit, it was definitly no dolphin. I assuming a bull shark as many people have told me I am idiot for wading the shallows as they have been seen. Has anyone seen this happen before I was in absolute shock as I have fished this spot so many times before. My mate and I were torn between going closer for a look or running and we chose ran, he had a go pro on hoping that he caught some of the thrashing on it. 4th Encounter, a stingray the size of family carpet payed us a visit on our sprint away from the shark to finish our day. No fish none the less exciting day.

Young One Cleans Up with Big Fish
Submitted by Mick C on Sun, 2014-10-12 11:47Fresh from his unexplained absence last Saturday morning, due to late night computer gaming, where we had a really good day on the water, YPM bounced out of bed at 4.45am yesterday morning for the monthly MAAC competition. He has picked up the Juniors prize for the last 4 months and was pretty keen on fishing the last comp before the ban to see what he could add to his yearly points tally. He was also inspired by my discussion of being “bricked” by a big dhu at the spot we had planned to head to first and had been planning how he was going to catch it. Even to the point he made a few rigs just for this pursuit.
With the wind being a bit “suspect”, we made the decision to go out early once it was determined that sea conditions were ok. You can’t leave the marina until 6am so we got to our spot a bit later than you normally would and really a bit late for the morning pinkie run. The bite was fairly slow and we boated a few undersized pinks and a few undesirables before I had a screaming run on the floater. It was hooked up and for the first minute or so hopes were high until the characteristic fight of a big ray was observed. Tighten up the drag and it was probably a good thing it busted off after about 5 minutes – you can waste so much time on the mongrels.
Not long after we were greeted to the squeal of YPM’s drag as something big took his carefully prepared snelled paternosta with whole squid and bonito slab cocktail. This fish had a lot of power and there was great disappointment when it clearly went under a rock in brick mode. YPM let the line loose and periodically put the heat back on to see if it had come out. I reckon the technique where we rig the sinker with much lighter mono might have paid off because I think the sinker broke off and the fish came free. YPM had clearly got it off the bottom and proceeded to play it to the surface. It was pretty exciting when we saw colour and the big dhu popped to the surface. Our net broke trying to fit it in and in a selfless act, Dean plunged his hands into its gob and hauled it aboard giving blood for the team. You have never seen a young fella as happy to get his prize.
Not long after, he also got a 1.5m wobby to the boat which was a little disappointing as they fight in a similar way to the due and we thought he may have had another one – it would have had to be released anyway. Apart from that the fishing was fairly slow so we headed south into the wind to try some other spots that had produced for us lately.
Brought out the last bag of burley from the huge batch we made a few months ago and set up. There was not much action until the burley started to work and we were surrounded by big schools of hungry sambos. It became mayhem as the sambos were on the chew to the point that we couldn’t get anything we hooked on the bottom past them. As it was comp day, and we have a marathon burley making session set up for next weekend we kept a few but mostly it was about catching the big angry fish on the light gear as it is really good sport. A highlight was throwing a half filleted herring out and drawing the hungry sambos right to the boat where they were trying to smash it on the surface right next to us – we could have gaffed them if we wanted.
Then, YPM hooked up on an absolute freight train that looked like it was going to spool the 30lb braid. This one seemed much bigger than the rest and after about 25 minutes of torture for YPM we had to fire up the outboard to chase the fish and managed to get about 100m of line back. I must say the young fella handled himself fairly well and our only input was a few words of advice about not going too hard and moving things out of the way as it ran him around and around the Hornet – showing again the benefits of having this type of boat to try and land big fish on light gear. After 40 intense minutes we finally saw colour, and what a horse it was. A great relief to get it onboard for the young one after putting so much effort in. There was no way he could hold the fish up for the photo and its weight went past our 50lb scales.
We moved on to try and get a few other species with captures of pike and sand whiting. To top off his day on the water, YPM managed to troll up a tailor and pike around a nearshore reef at the end of the day. No doubt he was likely to score a few points with that bag and he was really tired but keen to get to the weigh in. I think the grin in this photo says it all.
A few trips were required to get all the fish to the scales. Then dhu went 10.4kg and the sambo 26.7kg. At the end of the weigh in, the board revealed that YPM had won the seniors, juniors, biggest dhu, biggest sambo and we had come runners up in the doubles (clearly I let the team down). The MAAC fishermen are really a talented bunch of good blokes and for a 14 year old to win the singles is an effort he will remember forever.
Our final bag is below (you can only weigh in one sambo though). The bite was not as strong as other recent days but yesterday was a victory for youth and something that will stay with him for the rest of his life.
