Landing Nets, which ones are the best ?
Submitted by J Déjà Vu on Fri, 2014-09-26 19:00hey all recently bought a boat and in the process of decking it out with the essentials
mainly going to be fishing for snapper, mulloway, kingfish, samsons
and just wondering what have you found to be the best landing net out there
big enough to take these fish,
especially when fishing solo its either the gaff or the net, but i like to release 85% of the fish species i mentioned above
and a net would help me greatly
just unsure what makes sizes and brands i should be looking for if you could point me in the righ direction coming
from your experiences
Thanks for the Help

awesome golden ponds session.
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 2014-09-26 18:32hi guys, today i went to golden ponds for a day and strait away i got into some silver perch. manged to get my pb perch at 33cm. i kept catching them for hours until i got my pb trout at 32cm. After that i saw a guy catching heaps of koi carp in another lake so when he left i made up the rigs and got in to my first carp at 37cm and 950g, i am stoked!!! then i went to another lake and got my pg black bream at 28cm, i am stoked!!!. i relesed them all exept the trout. all these were caught on a running sinker then stoped at a swivel to 1m of 6lb leader and 2 corn curnals. After all it was a really good day.
ps. sorry for the bad pictures.

Rotto trench - looking for advice for coming season
Submitted by beeroclock on Fri, 2014-09-26 11:49Last year we only managed 3 trips out chasing marlin or YFT for the first time at the trench only got a 19 footer so weather stopped us from doing more trips out. We thought maybe its best to just troll from HYC FAD south through all of the FADs and got nothing. When you take that route your never in more than 200m depth so question is should we follow the deep trench dropoff which i see on navionics starts at about 240m going to 400+m quickly then slowly flattens out between 500 -600 m What kind of depths do most marlin get raised

Any one used StCroix rods?
Submitted by Russell Iles on Thu, 2014-09-25 16:20
Have some good rods that were expensive to buy & I am not prepared to pay that sort of money again.
Nothing wrong with them, they do what they were purchased for exceptionally well. No regrets what so ever.
Hear that StCroix make a darn good rod. That is the USA blanks & not the Mexican made blanks.
Anyone got personal experience using St Croix Bait Casting and or Spinning Rods in any configuration?
Cheers
Russell

Daiichiseiko Line recycler
Submitted by bushbeaver on Thu, 2014-09-25 11:20Hello to all tackle rats!
Just a heads-up regarding a great piece of fishing kit. This line recycler can be used to spool line at the tension you like, unspool line, reverse the line that's on your spool, and even wash your braided line!
Check it out on Youtube (takes a minute to load). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbgijFX4pfE
I'd been eyeing this for a while, finally decided to pull the trigger earlier this year. This is a top quality piece of Japanese kit, made mostly of cast aluminium and stainless steel, with a gearing/winding mechanism similar to that found on an overhead reel. The star drag lets you adjust the tension when you are spooling your reel. It comes with plenty of stainless fittings, which enable you to use any line spool you like
I now rate this as one of the best, most handy pieces of fishing kit I've ever bought.
Online price is around $ 180 including free postage from Melbourne. I can post a link to the retailer, but don't know if that is allowed?

imported squid
Submitted by Gav475 on Thu, 2014-09-25 10:25I went to my local tackle shop to get bait on Tuesday. I use the 2 kg blue box's of squid but they didnt have any. They had 2 kg red box's, from Canada I think but not exactly sure, but had never seen them before. The baits looked smaller and darker than usual. I dont know if it is a different species as I am not a squid expert. Anyway went out wide yesterday from two rocks and could not even get a bite on it apart from a few tiny pickers. Was tthe quietest day I have had. Has anyone else used this squid and did you have the same result or was i just unlucky.

Penguin Island last Saturday
Submitted by tailor marc on Wed, 2014-09-24 17:37Well now the good weather came back Saturday i finally put my camera down and dusted off the rods to wet a line. For the last few years i have really neglected my fishin and focused on my photography.
Last week around wednsday i seen the forcast for the weekend 32c! Plan was to leave the camera home and do some old fashion fishin and that i did!
I caught the 9oc first ferry to the island then made my way strait for the western side hoping for tailor.
I didnt get any tailor but did land 2 big silver bream and countless herring. Kept 2 Herring. I found a nice sandy gap in the reef and tried a bit of prawn for whiting but couldnt get through the wrass :(
I fished the main jetty after that and there was KG whiting there but all just undersized.
All in all a great day and felt so good to finally get back into fishing. Expect to see more fishing post from now on as i have my mojo back.

10/10 Big Pink, Dhu, KG, BA & Burley
Submitted by Mick C on Tue, 2014-09-23 23:10Don’t you love it when a plan comes together?
A mate from the East that has been receiving my WA Perth Metro photos came West for work. I have copped a constant “barrage” of messages over the last month about taking him fishing in WA as his itinerary needed to be planned. No mate, you have to fish the conditions over here and when the wind is right, we can go – as long as it is dawn or dusk. Long range forecasting and constant checks of the weather meant lots of communications, and today was likely to be good as are the next few days.
It turned out as forecast, even though the Hillarys real time weather conditions (wind change strength) were checked all day to confirm, and we headed out at 4.30pm. Proven ground, baits and rigs, good burley, the Minn Kota holding us on the spot, and the expectations of quality fish were high – although it is never a sure thing.
Perth Metro delivered again! 780mm Pink (5.5kg), 540mm Dhu, 440mm KG, 330mm Blackarse (although shrunk to just over 300mm when measured at home) and a couple of big Snook for the burley. Lots of “undesirables” and returned undersized “quality” for an awesome afternoon/evening/night on the water. How good is this place?

Furuno Sounder Deals - Limited time only
Submitted by Oceanside Tackle on Tue, 2014-09-23 21:44Super Deep fishing has become very popular and so has the inquiries to Oceanside Tackle and Marine re what we use and recommend electronics wise.
Simple, its Furuno all the way and all us staff (including the shop Owner Ryan Thipthorp) use the commercial units like Furuno FCV295 & FCV1150.
They are our preferred units for Super Deep fishing by far however if the budget is set lower then the Furuno FCV587 matched with a TM260 transducer is the least you would use.
After being asked for many years to do a Super Deep talk Ryan Thipthorp c/o Oceanside Tackle and Marine will do a talk soon. In the mean time we have been selling some nice Furuno gear to fit out our customers boats of late and the pricing is very sharp.
We are doing some "AWESOME SPECIALS" on Furuno gear ie;
FCV1150 Sounder
FCV295 Sounder
FCV587 Sounder
TM260 Transducer (with bracket)
2KW 28 & 38 Transducers
3KW 28 & 38 Transducers
2KW 200khz Transducers
(Transducers deals are based on buying a sounder)
With all sounder purchases we will do all the settings for you, explain what the settings are used for, make you fully understand your sounder and explain what your looking for re echo's, colours, fish formation and maximizing the units full capability's.
So if your wanting to buy the best sounder for demersal fishing/jigging and Super deep fishing etc then PM us or call on 9337 5682, ask for Josh or Ryan for the BEST DEALS.

exmouth, nearly there!
Submitted by Niko on Tue, 2014-09-23 21:32holiday booked 6 months ago and is now only a few days away. first trip to exmouth for a week leaving saturday!
been hammering the search function and found loads of great info on the whens and wheres to fish and just the general look at things to do. got myself a new 9ft catana and solstice combo not top end gear but itll throw 40gram lures around with 20lb braid, plus my heavy and light combos. got a few poppers and metal slices for queenfish and trevally an even some small stuff to have a go at the whiting in the gulf on poppers and small walker lures. will be solely landbased (although id love to get on the charters ppl have spoken about). generally prefer to use bait but it sounds like if im going to have a go at lure fishing exmouth is the place to start. weather reports look like there be some good weather altho a bit of wind so i figure just stay on the gulf side when its blowing and get onto the west on the calmer days.
ive been reading up heaps and know a few good spots to try and keen to just have a crack wherever i end up, as it is a family trip with the gfs side i wont be able to fish 24/7 but will get out as often as i can even if its the local marina or beach. seeing as it is my first time up and i want to make the most of it if theres any recomendations from the guys whove been up a bit, fishing/sights or reports on the fishing or weather from anyone on the way back or been up recently id love to hear them.
few questions though if anyone can help, keen to get a few spangled emperor for the table, can you get them on the gulf side or is the west side more productive? also baitwise are they particularly different to bluelined emps (black snapper) we caught a heap in shark bay on mulies on gangs or cubes on single hooks so i was just going to give this ago. or just any other tips/tricks to help me get 1 or 2 would obviously be appreciated.
hopefully im on the right track and cheers to anyone who takes the time to help out and i get into a few fish. im not taking a vac sealer or portable freezers so everything caught will be released if it cant be eaten that day/week, just keen to tackle some of the fast sportfish up there.
cheers FW
Niko

Kalbarri
Submitted by lachieH on Tue, 2014-09-23 20:51Hi everyone, I might be going camping with my friends in Kalbarri in the holidays and wondering what you catch at the river and on the beach there. Would throwing stickbaits and poppers and a few baits be good for tailor at the beach? And can you catch bream in the river? And also are there any of the northern species like Barra, mud crabs, crocs, threadfin salmon etc. I'm restricted to land based and kayak fishing (only allowed to go on kayaks in the river).

When is a lure not a lure.
Submitted by Russell Iles on Tue, 2014-09-23 14:47Recreational fishers around the world all have their individual thoughts
as to what a lure is, but when is a lure not a lure.
We accept that Halco, TT's (Tackle Tactics) ZMan, Predatec, Gulp are lures in as much that they are artificial lures, be they
soft or hard.
So when someone uses a live tommy, a piece of squid or a chunk off of a fish fillet, are they not lures?
Or is it that traditionally, we use these forms of baits as baits & that is what we stick too as a tradition?
Fishwrecked experts tell me what you think, as I would like to have a definitive view based on your comments so that
I can include them in my e-books on recreational fishing.
Cheers
