Sharks
Submitted by metroLBfisher on Wed, 2013-02-20 22:50For all the land based shark fisho's out there i have a question for you! Just wanting to know do people get more hook ups on balloon or bottom baits?
Reason i ask is im heading to a spot this saturday and it is possible to balloon there, although it isn't extremely deep. Would it be worth going somewhere off the beach with some chop and a little deeper having bottom baits out? (obviously means we wont get the bait out as far and wont be able to use such big baits and heavy long rigs as the balloons)
Can't make up my mind which option would be best

Surprise throw net catches
Submitted by harropino on Wed, 2013-02-20 13:35Was using my throw net in the Leschenault Estuary The other day gathering some small mullet for a Tailor expedition and was quite surprised by a couple of my catches. One throw yielded 8 tiny black bream, 5-6cm (all safely returned)and in another i got 4 tiny kg whiting which i havent personally caught in this system for 15 years(all Returned)
Hope this is a sign of the systems health and hopefully good catches in the future :)

Shimano Reels
Submitted by metroLBfisher on Tue, 2013-02-19 23:41Hey guys,
Just wanting a few opinions on a new reel to purchase. Basically at the moment i have a shimano baitrunner 6000D that i use for all my beach fishing. The last two times i have been to "Spot x" i have been spooled one was definately a big shark and the other took 300 meters in 60 seconds flat banging head shakes.
The only way i can see around this from getting spooled is upgrading to a bigger reel size. Just wondering what reel i should get out of the shimano range spending a max of $250. Wanting it to hold around 400 meters of 40-50 pound braid and at the same time having a good drag pressure? And definitely a spinning reel! I have two overheads already. Need this for casting baits into the surf..
If anyone has any idea's on what i should get please post, would be much appreciated! Reason i am sticking with shimano is because they have been so reliable and durable!
Cheers!

Taking apart a mercury tacho
Submitted by joel88 on Tue, 2013-02-19 21:18Hey guys,
So the tacho in the boat stopped working and found a new one online with a price I couldn't refuse so I have bought it and installed it. Problem is it's a white tacho and the rest of mine are black. I still have the old broken black one so what I was wondering is does anyone know how to take these things apart? I was thinking of swaping the seal and black face into the new tacho but can't get the old one apart to look at how hard this would be. Or is this a stupid idea and me being picky and should I just leave the white one in there? I've included some photos so you can see what I mean.

Direction Bank
Submitted by artygunner on Tue, 2013-02-19 19:28Hi All,
I am going out to Direction Bank in the morning for what looks to be an awesome day on the water! Just want to know what most peoples setup is for there. Last time I was there I picked up a 57cm KG and a couple of Baldies but I missed so so many good bites.
I am running a padernoster rig with 1 running 4/0 hook to a 7/0 circle.
There were quite a lot of pickers there last time as well, pretty common I would suspect? (haven't been boat fishing much)
Targeting Baldies, Pinkies, Dhuies, KGs, Black Ass

Shimano Stradic 8000 for DHI trip
Submitted by Buzzer on Tue, 2013-02-19 11:16Hi all
Going up to DHI at the start of May, in the process of buying a new rod and reel. I was looking at getting a Shimano Stradic 8000 loaded with 50lb braid and matching that witha 13' Daiwa sensor surf. Very much a novice when it comes to heavier gear so any feedback on this set up would be appreciated.
cheers

What is a Buffalo Bream?
Submitted by Fathom on Mon, 2013-02-18 20:39OK, I'm a diver, I see some different stuff, I believe what everyone calls a "Buffy" might not be acurate?
I reckon there are 3 different species catorigised as one, not only major color variations but slight change in shape, hey I aint no Marine Biologist but certainly seen lots of difference in them for the last 15 yrs of filming stuff underwater in WA.
3 buffs or just 1 with colour variations?

Not sure if the blood on his arm is because he tried this before and failed or if he is using it as burley!

Fishing the Narrows
Submitted by Sixapeal on Mon, 2013-02-18 15:06So ive decided to try my luck at the narrows.. ive never fished
there so should be fun. What bait do people use, im thinking
river prawns and maybe give a bag of mulies a try? I will take
a few lures and heard the twisties are a hit. I will soak a big bait
see if i can get a hit or two. Id also be chasing tailor, bream or
flathead..
Im guessing you fish from the south side im just not sure if
you setup from under the bridge to the left or right? i notice on
google maps there is a little beach type area..
Thanks again guys

Shitties
Submitted by Sea Raider on Mon, 2013-02-18 13:16Better known as the Trumpeter.
Sorry, but I was bought up in South Oz where these little beauties were refered to as Shitties and I refuse to change that.
Does anybody know of a way to reduce the accidental hookup of these little darlings while you're fishing for Whiting?
I fished Geographe Bay on Saturday and while I ended up with 12 KGW, I counted the Shitties and actually caught 42 of them to get my 12 whiting, very frustrating.
Thanks in advance

Crabs and Bream
Submitted by Cruise Control on Mon, 2013-02-18 12:21Plenty of crabs and Black Bream down Mandurah way. Went down with the wife and daughter on saturday to spend the night with friends on the canals.
Arrived at 3.30, on the boat at 4.00 and bagged out on crabs by 5.30. Heaps of smallish ones with some bigguns amongst them. Trolled back to the canals picking up some fresh tailor for bait. After a feed of fresh crabs which were packed tight with meat and a couple or four coldies we retired to the waters edge and proceeded to try for black bream. A couple of rats at first and then the bigger fish came in.
Busted off twice before landing this guy. I'm not usually a bream fisher but pretty happy with a healthy one this size. Easily the biggest I've ever landed. Measured him at 38cm before release.
