Albany Fishing Spots
Submitted by Piggy on Thu, 2013-02-28 11:44Gday,
I am heading down to Albany this weekend with family and friends and I am hoping that a local could point us in the right direction on where to catch a feed. I wont be taking the boat down so it will only be shore fishing. I will be taking beach rods and small rods down. Obviously I cant go rock fishing or anything a little more dangerous because we will have small kids with us aswell.
If anyone can give me any spots or pointers it would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

Favourite Mackie Lures
Submitted by Bodie on Thu, 2013-02-28 11:26Just curious to know what people find to be their most productive lures or colours when targeting mackies?
Been in to a couple different tackle stores lately looking for a few more for the collection and to take up to Exmouth in a few weeks time, and have found every person you speak to at the tackel stores has a different opinion.
Got me thinking as to weather there is actually a more productive colour in General or if colours really matter at all?
People have always said red heads work the best.. but personally, ive caught stuff all on them! I've found gold to the more productive colour and the lures to be 5m divers.
Whats everyone elses opinon? guess location, water clarity and so on probably all play a part too.

Yallingup land based
Submitted by snapper_seeker on Thu, 2013-02-28 07:44Hey guys heading to yallingup for the long weekend, I was wondering what some land based options are, are salmon around yet? Is there a good place to balloon/drift bait for sharks ? I mainly want salmon and sharks but I understand that there is probably not many salmon around yet.
cheers for responses I'm leaving on Friday and not sure what gear to take.

Trolling lures - hook modifications
Submitted by robert1979 on Wed, 2013-02-27 20:58Hello,
Thinking about removing the trebles from my lures (Halco lasers 19dd and xdd if its relevant) and replaing with a single hook at the rear, mainly for safer and easier hook removal. Will this affect the way the lures swim? Also is this going to have a seriously negative impact on hook up rate?
Cheers

multi use rods
Submitted by roganjosh on Wed, 2013-02-27 11:39Hi Guys,
I am in the process in buying a new reel. I am deciding between the new Daiwa Certate 3000 or the Catalina 3500, or other suggestions are welcome. I wish to run PE2 / 20lb. I will then need to match it too a new rod. I would like to only have to buy 1. I would like to use it from my dinghy around the reefs at coral bay / exmouth throwing hard bodies lures, soft plastics , poppers for spangled emperior etc and hoping to be able to use it landbased as well for soft plastics. Is this possible. If so does anyone have any rod suggestions.

Trolling patterns / hooks?
Submitted by randall df223 on Tue, 2013-02-26 20:38off to monkey mia in april and the blowholes at end of may. my questions relate to what trolling patterns does everyone use. in the past i have trolled at about 6.5 knts with 2 shallow lures straight behind each stern quarter, and two deep divers out wide on each side and closer to the boat. i have read about trolling a popper or giant trembler in place of the shallow lures. does anyone do this? IMO, the popper could jump all over the place and tangle everything. opinions?
also, i have seen trebles being replaced with single hooks. is this worth while, and hook opening up or down?

Help First Time Trip to W.A.
Submitted by karlws on Tue, 2013-02-26 17:02Hi all, I am hoping to get some invaluable information to help plan a trip to W.A.
My wife and I plan on traveling across the Nullarbor in mid -April; we will be traveling from east to west, with a caravan in tow. We are also bringing a 3.5M Dart with a 15HP Yamaha, and a Mangrove Jack Trailer. We intend to hug the coast all the way to Broome and then into Darwin for early July. We will travel back the same route about mid to late August so we can catch up on the things we nay have missed or enjoyed so much on the way up
What I would like is some guidance on where we can use our tinny (given its limitations) and where to fish land based.
Where are we better off using bait? And what bait? Where are we better off using lures? And what are the best lures to use.
We each intend on bringing Surf Rods, Light Whiting gear, and a general a purpose rod such as a 2.2M Ugly Stick.
I can't tell you how much we are looking forward to this so any help and information that would assist us would be most gratefully received.
Thanks
Karl

Buying Salted Mulies, anybody know where?
Submitted by Stax on Tue, 2013-02-26 16:19We are looking to buy about 20-25Kgs of Salted Mulies. Can somebody tell me where or even if they can be bought?
We have thought about doing it ourselves, and maybe if we can't find then pre packed we will.
Reason, we simply do not have enough room in our freezer for 30-40Kgs of bait.
Thanks in advance

FishMap - CSIRO mapping tool
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Tue, 2013-02-26 15:58This is pretty cool.
FishMap is a free online mapping tool that allows anyone interested in fish to discover which fish species occur at any location or depth throughout the marine waters of Australia's continental shelf and slope.
FishMap also lets people create regional illustrated species lists for almost all of Australia's marine fishes, detailed with photographs and illustrations, distribution maps and current scientific and common names.
FishMap was developed by CSIRO's Wealth from Oceans Flagship and the Atlas of Living Australia.
Full release is here.

Exmouth Overnighters - the islands Murions/Peak/Flat Island/Serrurier Islands
Submitted by terboz123 on Tue, 2013-02-26 08:30Everyone
Planning the trip up to exxy hard now as its less then a month away when we depart perth. Looking at doing a couple over nighters at the islands,. Fished the murions pretty hard last years which resulted in our best fishing. Keen on heading further, i personally think Peak is viable for a day trip, but the islands furter north west, i think we may look at doing over nighters.
Currently Boat hold 300L of fuel (plenty), currently do round trips to the FADS and trench with roughly 140km driven, and only use just half a tank.
The catch is my boat is fiberglass, so over nighters are going to be tricky i think with the tides. Can anyone give me any advice whether they have done over nighters here and watch bays were easyiest to anchor up and easyier to work with the tides?

Are we being invaded
Submitted by dalaisc on Mon, 2013-02-25 08:34I have been diving the Swan River and Cockburn Sound for years and have noticed over the past 12 months that we are being invaded. Not sure if it is an invasion or a resurgents of stocks.
Anyway the first invasion is those feathery looking leather jackets, particularly in the lower reaches of the Swan River. I remember almost a decade ago one was presented at SwanFish and took out the prize for most unusual fish. These days I see heaps of them when diving around the lower reaches of the Swan. Have also noticed them in Cockburn Sound.
Second invader is those Razor Shells in Cockburn Sound. I have come across fields of these things with thousands of them. Are these any good to eat?
