Karri Valley Resort, Pemberton. Any fish??
Submitted by beau on Fri, 2011-06-24 13:05Hey guys heading gown to Karri Valley Resort next weekend, just wondering what the chances are of actually catching a trout as the resort is situated on Lake Beedelup. Anyone stayed there and fished before? Anyone caught a trout from there own balcony too? Will the trout down there take lures?
Cheers

fake reels?
Submitted by Jeffree on Thu, 2011-06-23 23:34hey guys.
i was down at my local tackle shop a few days ago and a bloke came in to spool his 2500 FA stella.
upon inspection, the shop owner discovered some inconsistancies with his reel.
at first the paint on the reel was a little off, then upon closer inspection more and more inconsistencies were discovered, the reel handle, internal machanics, etc.
after informing the owner of the stella, the owner told us he always wondered why he got it for only $450 brand new.
anyone else had such experiences??

Fishing the barometer?
Submitted by Ringy35 on Thu, 2011-06-23 20:51Hey guys,
Was just looking on the net at all the digital weather stations that are going around at the moment and remembered my old man and his old mates talking about the drop or rise in the barometer and how it should be good for fishing??? does anyone out there watch for changes in the weather pattern like this and fish to them?
One of his mates used to keep a diary of every single fish that he caught with the location, length, weight, time, swell, moon phase and all weather readings..( i would love to get a hold of that little black book!!!)
Is there any species of fish that this might effect? Is there any truth to any of this? Or... was it just a subject of conversation to fill in time so they could all stay out the shed drinkin their VB stubbs!!!!!!!

Submitted by jack93 on Thu, 2011-06-23 20:32hey all
just going to ask for some advise on afew things to help me out with the trip im doing up to exmouth next wednesday the 28th till 7th, i will be staying/camping in the heart of town at exmouth ningaloo caravan and holiday resort.
Whats being caught lately from shore and from the boat? ( boat is 5.5m alli with 75 honda made by scorpian boats)
BOAT
I was just wondering afew things like where i can catch mackies and how to know where they are?
what speed, lures and depth to trawl?
does the tide matter much ?
because im new to using the sounder would like to know what reef fish and structure would actually look like on a sounder, i have seen photos of structure on sounders and in real life but i have never really had anyone explain it to me.
LANDBASED
would also be keen to know where i can fish landbased for sharks without it being too difficult to land and release. i know sharks are everywhere in exmouth but really would love to land afew and get afew photos! i would love to get into some little queenies and gts on bream gear !
if anyone has any suggestions on locations for boat or landbased for any of these please post up or drop me a pm as any info is greatly apreciated!

Submitted by danno on Thu, 2011-06-23 19:54Hey all.
I'm wondering how long does squid last in the freezer before it goes off? I've got a bunch that i caught a few months ago in busso and froze them all together so havent had the chance to eat them all as i've been catching enough to eat each week fresh so i havent needed to defost the big lot.

Broome Report (6th to 20th of June 2011)
Submitted by PattyT on Thu, 2011-06-23 15:45Broome report
I’ve had my trip to Broome planned for well over a year now and finally the time for me and my best mate Ben to go had arrived!! To say we were pumped was an understatement!! Here is my report, it’s fairly long but I hope you enjoy.
We got into Broome on Monday the 6th and had two weeks to see what the fishing could deliver both by land and by sea. We managed to sneak a quick fish off the jetty the first night with no luck, we couldn’t believe how big the tides were and how high the jetty was... maybe it was going to be harder than we thought. Still our hopes were high leading into day two.

The next day we decided to give the jetty a miss (still a little perplexed as to how people actually caught fish off it) and decided to head off to Gantheume Point to try catch a Mackie off the rocks. Again we had no luck spinning/popping or baiting a Mackie up, even though we saw one swimming only about 5 metres away from us. Ah well, still we remained positive as tomorrow was our first day in the boat.

Day three saw us on the boat for the first time. Our game plan was to head out to Willie and Barred Creeks to try our luck trolling for some Pelagics. The morning session was ok getting 5 school Mackerel and dinner, but after lunch things really went quite. We tried chasing around tuna schools for a little bit but it wasn’t easy in the rough conditions. After a while we decided to go back closer to home for a bottom bash. We ended up just off Gantheume point and caught a few undersize coral trout and Spanish flag. Little did we know we were only about 600m from an absolute gold bit of ground that we found later in the trip. Back at the beach there was a pretty funny situation that arose while retrieving the boat. The boat hire guy had a petrol powered winch bolted to the tray of his ute, as he powered her up and began to lift the boat onto the trailer the weight of the boat completely ripped the tray off the ute. Couldn’t believe it when it happened, but the tray was pretty rusted as it had been exposed to the salt water almost every day. So after about an hour the guys had sorted it out... but the boat was left high and dry. Haha, well done to Darren from the boat hire place who kept his cool through the whole thing.

Unfortunately the wind blew up over the next few days meaning we couldn’t get out on the boat. So we went back to the point to try our luck again. No luck!! by this stage we were starting to get a little worried that the trip wasn’t going to be what we expected.
Later in the week we caught up with fellow wrecked member Steve (freshsquidmarks) and went down to willie creek for a fish off the land. It was a fun day, catching bits and pieces and talking fishing for most of the day. I dropped a nice diamond trevally which would have made a great photo. Steve ended up getting a nice flathead which was a bit of a suprise to all of us, not what you’d expect to catch in Broome. After we dropped Steve off we were a little more confident of what laid ahead for the trip, he gave us some good advice on places to go and what the dynamite bait was. So we went straight to Woolworths and bought 5kgs of banana prawns... not for dinner... but for the hungry fish that awaited us. Steve was an absolutely ripping bloke by the way! The fishing went nuts from this point on in the trip...

Still to windy to go out on the boat we decided to give the jetty another chance over the next few days and nights with prawns in tow. What we experienced was the best land based fishing I have ever had. We caught heaps of Trevally, We got blue bone, Spanish flag, Crimson perch, heaps of batfish (fight like buggery but got annoying after a while) one i let the groper eat... woops, golden snapper, heaps of Queenies, mackerel. Lost a few fish to the groper and had a few unstoppable’s as well. We caught most of the golden trevally and reef dwellers on the prawns but all the mackerel and queenies we caught casting plastics into the far corner of the jetty. On light gear it was awesome fun trying to stop them from bricking you on the jetty. I would easily go to broome again just to fish the jetty. Saw some amazing fish get pulled up by others as well, including a stonking blue bone that would have nudged 10kg. We ended up fishing the jetty morning and night for almost the next week as we waited for the winds to slow. Was well worth it , wish we had of gone back sooner.

The next time we got out on the boat we had the pleasure of being joined by wrecked member Marky (Another cracking bloke!!) We decied we’d try again for that our elusive Mackie. Marky was pretty sure he could get it for us. Ben and I ended up leaving most our gear behind (Fishing the jetty night and day was taking its toll, haha) but we eventually got out there. Marky was the first one to chuck out a lure while ben and I were rigging up. That lure got smashed by a Mackie after sitting in the wash for about 2 min... game on!! Marky gave ben the rod and after a 5min battle he had the 8kg Mackie cooked on the surface. The fish was as well hooked as you could hope so marky didn’t rush the gaff shot, this fish was going nowhere... or so we thought. He bit through the 80pd wire trace and he was gone. That was the first and only Mackie we saw on the trip... really the only fished we missed. So close though. Marky said that was the first time he had seen that happen. We spent the rest of the day trolling around and bottom bashing. Was a pretty quiet day fishing wise but we had a blast, Marky gave us plenty of advice which we used in the days after, really top bloke. He also lent us his teaser for the rest of our trip. You really have the life up there mate!!! Jealous! We ended getting a few of these little weird looking fish that none of us could id (see the pic)

The rest of the trip we split our time catching queenies from the jetty in the morning then heading out on the boat in the afternoon. We found an awesome patch of reef just off from Gantheume Point which we fished when the tides suited. Over the days we fished there we caught hundreds of fish, some of the highlights were the big coral trout which was amazing on the chew and a pretty rare capture accoriding to some of the old boys on the pier, the big chinamon, The first size blue bone, the countless sharks that smashed our livies and the school of juvenile queenies that moved in on the last day I reckon we caught 60 atleast... on the bream gear which was heaps of fun. Between the bottom bashing we chased tuna schools, each day we lightened the tackle which made for some funny sights. Ben got down to about 2kg and I got down to about 4 kg, and of course thats when the bigger fish started to take the slugs we were casting into the schools. The last day I got in a solid mack tuna that went about 8 kg on the scales... took me about 25min of that gear. Had me stuffed by the end of it. Was heaps of fun though.

Well, that about covers it!! Was easily the best two weeks fishing of my life, without exagertating i reckon we caught about 300 fish between us in the two weeks. The weather ended up turning it on for us in the last few days with afew glass outs. We didnt get that the big mackie we wanted but we didnt care to much. Ben and I were shattered when it was time to leave. Meet some really good people while we were away, all the locals were friendly and were happy to give advice. Already looking forward to the next time i make the journey... bring it on!
Big thanks again to Steve and Marky for having a fish with us, just shows how good this forum is with good blokes like that willing to have a fish with random victorians like ben and myself. Too good!!
Enjoy the pics..

New Book ??
Submitted by One Eyed Phil on Thu, 2011-06-23 15:30I hope I'm not breaching protocol here - if I am I sincerely apologise- but I have just found a publication in the newsagent called 'North Australian Fish Finder'
Aparently it only comes out every 2 years. It covers all the Oz coast from the Murray mouth (south of Perth) to Eden (NSW?)
Shows depth, Tracks, hotspots, GPS locations, gutters, bommies etc and loads more.
I am wrapped in finding iit seems to cover all the info I need and I'm examining it closely since we are trying to get some LB fishing in for a few days next week up mid north.
I have NO attachment to the company who produces it or even any commercial involvement at all. I just thought thast tthis is the book that will answer a lot of questions that are posted on this forum
Again Adam, I hope I've not done something wrong here
Regards
Phil

Rod Rating Question
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Thu, 2011-06-23 14:52I have just bought a Shimano Tcurve Saltwater Spin 5-10 http://www.campbellsprotackle.com/store/product.asp?ID=3697 and I have a question about the 10-40gm Lure/Jig weight rating for the rod. I was thinking some of the lures I have would be heavier than this. Is the 10-40gm an optimum guideline or a rule? Obviously less than 10gm would be hard to cast far and I would go back to my bream gear.
Also I was thinking of using this rod in upto 50mts, and around Rotto using up to 4 oz (112gm) jigheads to hold bottom for soft plastics on a different rod in the past has got me thinking. Is it about the cast or is it dragging the lure/sp/whatever up through the watercolumn?
Its paired up to a shimano symetre running 20lbs braid if that matters also?
Help appreciated as I definiately dont want to stuff a new(well, new to me anyway) rod!

torsa or JM
Submitted by Simon C on Thu, 2011-06-23 08:30After some opinions from some of the better educated in these things.
Looking for a new heavier jigging/bottom fishing outfit for up north after my recent smokings on PE3. Was leaning towards one of the new JM pe5N reels, but was also thinking that the torsa 16N could be a good option. Not really sure on the rod yet, but I do like the look of some of the new saltigas, or may just go the old faithful tcurve 200. Want to fish at least PE4 but probably PE5 and jigs 150-300gm but also a fair bit of bottom bashing.
Opinions or other options?

Your squid gear.
Submitted by danno on Wed, 2011-06-22 20:43Hey all squidder's.
Im making this post so that people that are getting into squidding can read this and get an idea of the gear you use and which jigs to choose.
What rods and reels do you guys use for catching squid?
Im currently using a Egi Force Type C with a Diawa E-GEE eging reel with 8lb Sunline Super PE.
What are your top 10 favourite jigs colours and sizes?
Mine are:
1. 3.0 Pink/Brown Harimitsu
2. 3.0 Pink Harimitsu
3. 3.0 Yamashit Glow
4. 2.5 Evergreen Brown with red belly
5. 2.2 Yamashita Naory Pink Glow
6. 3.0/2.5 Shimano White Keimura Egixile
7. 3.25 Yo-Zuri Flashdancers in the Red, Pink and Orange
8. 2.5/3.0 Yo-Zuri Aces most colours Pink/Purple is a stand out for me
9. 3.0 Yamashita Q live Browny Red
10. 3.0 Evergreen Herring sort of colour with a hint of Green
This is a list of what i normaly use first and if nothing ill chose one of my other colours and sizes. My top brands at the moment are Harimitsu and the Yamashita's that glow as i do alot of night squidding.
What technique do you use?
Landbased.
My prefered technique most of the time is to cast the jig out as far as i can into weedbeds then let it sink. I'll count my jig down 10-15seconds and see if it feels like it deep enough if not give it longer. Its all about the feel and how close you think you are to the bottom. If the jig hits the bottom next cast ill take a couple of seconds off and try again untill i have the depth and sink rate right for the area but remeber to change it if you change jigs as they will sink differently to the last. ( if different brand)
After i have given it some sink time i will raise my rod slightly to see if i've got a squid on the drop if not i'll rip the rod up and down whilst winding 3 or 4 times and let it sink for another 5 or so seconds. ( again all about the sink rates and depth). I'll then repeat this untill i have a squid or im back at the rocks/jetty. If nothing ill do the same retireive a few more times casting into different area's then i'll try a slower retrive with 2 flicks then let it sink and so on. If i haven't caught one with in 5-6 cast for each technique i'll change jigs and try again. I give one area on the rocks/ jetty 3-4 jigs changes then move on up or down to find more weedbeds and hopefully squid. I normal give each spot a few hours before moving but if im getting a few squid here and there i'll stay for several 3-4 hours hopefully getting a feed. The most important thing about Landbased squidding behind the good jigs and being able to cast far is letting your jigs sink down low because you will get far more success. I've witnessed on several accounts people winding there jigs near the surface and not getting anything then i'll let it sink down and bang squid.
Also with the jigs its important to get the jig size right. Most of the time i squid with a 3.0 then ill change it around if im getting snagged or if im not getting down low enough. The jigs that i carry landbased are mostly 3.0 and 2.5s and i also have a few ( 10 or so) 3.5s in case its deep.
Boat based.
Boat squididng is easyer then landbased as you get the option to move from spot to spot quickly and your more then likely to find the squid easyer then landbased. For boat squidding i like the depths between 2-10m's with 4-5 my prefered depth. You can get squid deeper but it is harder to fish those depths but not imposible. Yamashita have released a nose weight that allows you to fish deeper areas with your smaller jigs their called Yamashita DD's and come in three different sizes. The only down side is the price, 12 dollars for 2 or 3 but handy if you have deep water spots. I havent used them as yet but in the coming months ill be trying them out and seeing how they go.
Boat squidding in shallower water can be as easy as throwing your jig out behind the boat and putting it in the rod holder waiting for the rod to load up. This technique does work pretty good but i find that if you work one jig and have another rod sitting in the rod holder your more likely to find squid. When fishing in the boat i use my flicky that is very light and use a light drag that sits in the rod holder and around 6'6, i only use this out fit as i havn't got a shorter squidding rod yet but soon i will. I then have my Egi Force to use as a casting out fit as the added length allows me to cover more ground while drifting. I find this rod a pleasure to use both landbased and on the boat exept its a little long to be fishing out of a tinny with.
When im casting around while drifting you use the same technique as you would landbased but you have to allow for more sink time. I cast up wind while drifting as it covers the ground in front of me and if any squid chases my jig in under the boat and i dont see and cast again the jig drifting out the back will normaly catch it. I use 3.0, 3.5s while fishing in the boat and will be trying out the nose weights in deeper water soon. When drifting around and you catch a couple of squid mark it on your GPS or remember where it is and do another drift as the normaly swim in schools and you can sometime get your limit from one spot.
I hope this has helped anyone out that is thinking about giving squidding ago. Its a lot of fun and very rewarding when you get use to it and i'll be bring home a feed in no time.
The bag limit for squid is 15 per person and a boat limit of 30 if two or more people are on the boat with a fishing licence.
I'm looking foward to what you guys use for squidding and what you think about your set up.
Cheers Danno.
P.s. if you dont think spending all this money on squidding when you can catch then on a handline, or you cant justify having a squidding rod and reel or you think it's all a big marketing scheme dont comment as this thread as this thread is to help people out and find out what the other FW members use and rate.

Cockburn sound
Submitted by mcgoo on Wed, 2011-06-22 09:44Morning everyone,
Just a quick question.. Ive got some eastern states visitors and was thinking about taking them out in the Sound today to chase some whiting/herring and squid.. I was thinking about the shallow weedbanks between rockingham foreshore and garden island.. I only have a small boat geared up for bream bashing so normally concentrate my efforts on the metro rivers, so I dont really know too many ocean fishing spots..
Has anyone been catching anything in that area?? Or has anyone got any suggestions on areas I should have a look at to get my visitors onto some fish..
Thanks in advance everyone..

Soft Plastics Mega Rod Test Session.........pinkie
Submitted by JohnF on Wed, 2011-06-22 09:31Did a quick after work session to tests the soft plastics rods out....given I have only caught a few undersize pinks on softy, it is not much of a PB, but it is a start. Went 56 cm, released to fight another day. Was also my first fish on left hand wind........hillareous. Most unco-ordinated thing you will ever see. Deckie is still laughing!
A rat sambo and 4-5 good sized snook kept things interesting for me and the deckie. Surprised to see how dark it was with fish still hitting softies......
On the mega rod test.......well, at least the 3 light rods I own:
- Tierra 7 ft 8-17lb flick rod...quite nice, butt a tad short, rod a tad long, a little stiff for 3/4oz. Indicates 6'6-6'8 length optimum.
- Salty Fighter - very nice, tad short at 6 ft. Broke a runner........I spose thats what you get for a $100 rod.....confirms you need to pay to get quality.
- Alexander PE2 jig rod - long butt a pain, but still usable. Confirms this is a nice jigger.........
Salist bay rubber rod is looking like a contender for a PE1.5-2 soft plastics rod.......

Anybody fish Yesterday?
Submitted by beau on Wed, 2011-06-22 08:42

Did anybody head out for a fish yesterday? Mandurah was like glass all day, I surfed in the morning then fished a number of spots in the arvo, only caught some herring on a little rapala HB. Saw 2 guys with a solid Dusky Morowong in their bucket, poor bastards thought it was a queen snapper, think they might get a surprise at the dinner table. Maybe they are members on here? How did everyone else go?
