Boat covers
Submitted by Dirt on Fri, 2016-10-07 09:19hey guys I've got a 21 ft carrabean reef runner/ hardtop that I'm looking to get another boat cover for. The two I've have in the past cost me about $500 and were a multi fit cover, problem is water pools in the slack areas resulting in mould and the demise of the cover, last one only lasted 2 years. Looking to see what other options are out there that may be a better option. I know I can get a full custom cover for about $2000 but looking for something in between

Pre Ban Weather Gods
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Fri, 2016-10-07 06:49Not that I want to curse it but it looks like we're getting thrown a bone before the ban and I haven't been for a demersal bash since May 1 on account of shredding my knee and getting it put back together.
This weekend's gonna be spent tieing rigs and checking my knots as I plan to break my run of five 46-49 Dhueys.

Greg Pickering says WA Fisheries shark research lacks competency

totally agree with this piece below from greg pickering

Greg Pickering says WA Fisheries shark research lacks competency
TREVOR PADDENBURG, PerthNow
October 2, 2016 12:00am
•SHARK TOWERS: More shark spotting towers for Perth
•TRIAL: Surf watch towers arrive at Perth beaches
A TWO-TIME shark attack survivor has questioned the “competency” of WA Fisheries research into white shark numbers saying it fails to consult those who encounter the animals most.
Greg Pickering said any study of great white shark numbers needed to involve veteran spearfishing and fishing enthusiasts as well as abalone divers and commercial fishermen.
“I’ve got to question their competency,” said Mr Pickering, a veteran of 34 years as an abalone diver and spearfisherman who survived 10 hours of surgery to his face and chest after he was bitten by a great white shark during a dive 180km east of Esperance in 2013.
“People have stopped listening to Fisheries because they keep saying, ‘Our data doesn’t show any increase in numbers’. But maybe it’s the way they collect their data.
“I’ve been attacked by a shark twice, spent half my life in the water, kept records of everything I’ve seen on every dive since 1983 but I’ve never had a call or an email.
“There are a lot of guys with 30 or 40 years in the field with significant information to contribute. They’re in the water every day. You can’t pay for that sort of field work. But (Fisheries) feel they don’t need to talk to us because we don’t have a letter in front of our name saying, ‘Doctor so and so’.”
Greg Pickering a few months after the shark attack. Picture: Channel 7
Mr Pickering, who was also bitten by a 1.5m bronze whaler near Cervantes in 2004, said he and every diver he knew had no doubt white shark numbers were increasing.
“Talk to people who go diving and they just laugh at the suggestion there hasn’t been an increase in white sharks,” he said.
That was echoed by Bluewater Freedivers of WA president Barry Paxman, who fended off a 5m great white with his speargun off Two Rocks in 2014. Mr Paxman said keen freedivers were encountering an average of three or four white sharks a year.
“Thirty years ago you never saw one, but in the last five years I’ve seen quite a number and in the last 2-3 years it’s ramped up even more,” the veteran diver said.
“Freedivers could have a lot of input (to the Fisheries research). The fact is these sharks are apex predators, they’re not being caught anymore, and they are breeding. We will see more attacks.”
WA Beaches
His comments come after a four-year investigation of WA’s great white shark population — commissioned in 2012 after a spate of shark attacks — has left Fisheries experts with no idea whether numbers are going up or down.
The report used shark lifespan data and catch records to model the white shark population but the models varied greatly, suggesting anything from a seven per cent a year increase since great whites were protected in 1997 to a 10 per cent overall decline.
Fisheries Department executive director of research Dr Rick Fletcher said spearfishing and fishing enthusiasts were not consulted as part of the research, although he said the reconstructed catch histories of white sharks included in the report were largely based on interviews with commercial fishermen, and their perception of white shark abundance was noted in the report.
Mr Fletcher said since 2007 commercial abalone divers were also required to report observations of white sharks in their logbooks.
Fisheries Minister Joe Francis said factors such as improved fish stock management, marine park proposals and sea lion exclusion zones meant there would be more prey for great whites and it was likely they will become more common.

North Sulawesi
Submitted by mw87 on Wed, 2016-10-05 18:57
Hi All,
I have found myself leading up to a week or so of R&R in North Sulawesi, Indo. I hear the diving is all kinds of special, however I can't seem to find much at all about any fishing options available.
I, in hindsight, stupidly left my travelling set-up at home so I'm really hoping there's an opportunity to do perhaps a jigging and popping charter with gear inclusive.
I may be a little ambitious in what I'm hoping for, but hopefully someone may be familiar enough to give some recommendations or advice for the area.
I'll be initially in Manado, then willing to travel wherever catches my interest.
Thanks in advance!

Cray pot tipper
Submitted by Bryce Day on Tue, 2016-10-04 02:02Well after seeing a few pot tippers on gumtree, most being not suitable for my needs (either to small or to light wall thickness) I decided to knock one up. Only problem was I was at work and cray season is rapidly approaching and I didn't have an ally tig. So I flicked a few drawings to a company to get a bit of a head start. I have to cut the green off the other end so it won't be that long. I will put some pics of the build process up when I buy my new AC tig on Thursday, running full size cane pots so will see how it goes. Oh and one of Hezzys for something different

Go Pro Underwater Footage
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Mon, 2016-10-03 08:50I'm pretty keen to grab a 2nd hand Go Pro to drop down to see what's on the sea floor to get a better understanding of what I'm seeing on the sounder. I don't wanna spend a lot in case I get it snagged or a dirty big sambo comes and eats it so what's the thoughts on a Go Pro Hero 2 or is the technology getting too old now?

Withnell Point DHI
Submitted by Baitballs on Sun, 2016-10-02 13:34Gday all, I have a trip planned for Dirk Harthog early next year. I haven't camped at Whithnell for 5 years and I have heard on the grape vine that the shack has washed away since. Is anyone able to let us know if there is anything still there, or is it just a beach camp now? I like Withnell point for it's protection and proximity to the top of the island.

Demersal Closure
Submitted by Grey Ghost on Fri, 2016-09-30 13:56I'm confused - I thought I read in here that demersal ban begins on October 1 but has been moved to October 2 and people without fishing licence free to fish on 2nd October.
Dept. of Fisheries website indicates ban begins on 15 October and runs until 15th December (thought it was end of January).

Has anyone ever used mudskipper as bait?
Submitted by Meeuwissen on Thu, 2016-09-29 21:45I always read the yawuru calender when i am in the coles in broome , i find them very informative
example
Yawuru people live by six seasons. We read the changing signs in the wangal (winds), the wula (rainfall) and temperature, and the plants and animals, and notice how these come together.
The wattle flowers in Barrgana mean that the salmon and catfish are fat. When the wattle seeds, the mullet lay their eggs, and when the seeds open up, the eggs have hatched.
One of them mentioned that mudskipper is good bait but i want to know more about how to rig them up and what type of species you could catch with it.
Any help would be appreciated

XXL Storm Garfish Available - Shore Catch Post 9
Submitted by Shore Catch on Thu, 2016-09-29 21:32It is the time of year that you can buy very large garfish from the fish markets, although not for much longer. The fish range from 200g to 350g+.
We have had many requests for this product so have purchased a number of lots and vacuum sealed fresh storm gar in 1kg packs, and snap frozen them.
The tackle shops have expressed interest, but I would like to give Fishwrecked Members first crack. There are expert skip bait fishermen on the site and these baits are as good as you can get, other than catching them yourself (packs of 3, 4 or 5 fish per kilo). They will last a long time in the freezer.

Retail is $25, but $22.50 to Fishwrecked Members from our premises in Wangara. Please send a PM if you would like us to hold stock for you, subject to availability.
We hope that provision of quality bait for particular applications, on a seasonal basis, is a service of interest? Mick
