Derwent wreck, Mandurah artificial reef
Submitted by meglodon on Sat, 2016-10-22 22:01Has anyone fished the Derwent wreck in recent times or tried the Mandurah artificial reef. I should think that there should be something around the reef by now, even if it is only sambos. Time has just escaped me from doing so but I'll have to get out to both places when some good weather comes along and I can dodge cutting the lawn.

Which way would you go?
Submitted by johnathon on Sat, 2016-10-22 18:19I'm looking a the Reflex Chianti 635 and the Formosa Searod.
i have a family of 5 boys and the wife wants to go for a fish so I'm shopping really hard for a suitable boat for reef and creek fishing. 75% of the time it's me and a couple of mates then the rest of the time I need the family boat.
Any recommendations or a favourite out of the two I mentioned?
thanks in advance.

SWITCHING OFF SOUNDER
Submitted by Sam57 on Sat, 2016-10-22 13:29WAS TALKING TO AN OLD TIME FISHERMAN THIS MORNING AND HE SAYS SHOULD TURN OFF SOUNDER WHEN GETTING TO MARK OR WHEN FISH LOCATED AS HE BELIEVES SOUNDER SPOOKS FISH AND HIS CATCH RATE IS ALWAYS BETTER WHEN HE DOES THIS, IS HE PULLING MY LEG OR IS THIS THE CASE. WHAT DO OTHERS THINK ? I COULD CERTANLY DO WITH SOME HELP AS ONLY MANAGED TO CATCH UNDERSIZE DHU & SNAPPER THIS LAST YEAR. IF THIS IS THE CONSENSOUS, AS I HAVE A COMBO LOURANCE UNIT WOULD THE SOUNDER STILL TRANSMIT WHEN ON GPS.

Sleds
Submitted by Jmac on Sat, 2016-10-22 12:39What do other members do for temporary sleds on their craypots when they take them into area where required. A metal rod wired across the middle of the entrance seems easiest to me but I wonder if this will affect how many crays go in or anyone uses another method?

Shark Bay
Submitted by Big Mac on Sat, 2016-10-22 06:29Hi all, I have a 6m boat and I am looking for some advice on the opening between Dirkhartog Isl and Steep Point. I was up there earlier this year and I didn't want to chance crossing the opening because of the Unknown. Can anyone please give me some advice on where to cross and what are the favourable conditions for crossing. Thanks.

Night diving safer from shark attack than day diving? your thoughts?
Submitted by beeroclock on Fri, 2016-10-21 17:22Have to admit that ive always felt a bit safer scuba diving out there at night rather than diving at day. My thoughts being that at night your very brightly "lit up" with your torches and probably don't resemble "food" but at day my understanding is that divers and swimmers are mistaken for seals by great whites because they hunt and attack by sight. Have there been cases of scuba divers taken at night? all the cases ive seen have been at day or low-light conditions but not at night. Just a thought. Interested to hear what others think?

Damn Fleabay
Submitted by Dale on Fri, 2016-10-21 17:21 Made another bid on a reel last night after quite a few brews, ended up winning it, little 4000 Stradic Ci4. Third time I've done that this year for 2 Shimano Stradics and 1 Daiwa TDR, the misses is going to ban me from fleabay when I've been drinking.
Need a new rod now.

Billfish Bonanza Exmouth - looking for a crew
Submitted by Nailzy on Fri, 2016-10-21 13:06My usual team who fishes with me in Game fishing Tournaments are unable to make this one due to work commitments.
I have a 625 Cruisecraft with a 175 Yamaha 4 stroke 2015 model that is all set up for game fishing. Just throwing it out there to see if 1 or 2 fishwrecked members may be interested in fishing the Billfish Bonanza Tournament in Exmouth with me on the 11th, 12th & 13th November.
I am 42 years old, easy going & love a beer. I have plenty of game fishing experience and am happy to share what I know and look forward to learning some new tricks from whoever may wish to join me.
My plan is to leave Mindarie just after lunch on Tuesday 8th November and return Monday 14th November.
We will arrive in Exmouth around luch time on the Wednesday and prep the gear for a prefish Thursday. The tournament is Fri, Sat & Sun 8am - 4pm.
I am happy to drive the boat so whoever joins me can have all the strikes.
It is a Billfish only tournament and we will be skipping and swimming baits west of Tantabiddi.
There will be no time for bottom fishing so please don't reply unless you like trolling around all day, listening to Marlin tunes & having a can.
I have listed come costings that I believe to be accurate give or take $50 so you know what your up for.
Tournament nomination - $125
Exmouth Game Fishing Club Membership - $120 (not required if you are already a member of a GFAA club)
1st night accomodation at the Overlander - $50
Cabin at Big 4 Exmouth - $270
Boat Fuel - $75 per day for 4 days $300
Bait, Ice & Tackle - $100 for the trip
Food & drinks will be additional to this (presentation night dinner included)
I will take care of the car fuel there and back to assist with keeping the costs down.
This comes to a total of $965 for one person and would be obviously cheaper if we had 2 starters. (I reckon this is pretty good value for 4 days fishing in Exmouth)
I've had a pretty good run with the tournaments this year coming 2nd in the Exmouth Billfish Tournament in March & crewing for the Champion Female WA Open, Champion Junior Billfish at the Dampier Classic & Champion Smallfry Team at last months Australian Junior Billfish Tournament held in Exmouth.
If anyone is interested send me a PM and I'll get back to you in the coming days.
Cheers
Scott.

Saving space in your tackle box
Submitted by veitch1993 on Thu, 2016-10-20 22:34Gday guys!
Thought Id share a way i save a bit of space in my tackle box. I use rainy days to make my rigs and use the vac sealer to put them in individual squares. I double seal between each square so you can cut one rig off at a time without piercing the seal on another one.
Might be a little more expensive then other ways but it is a very tidy way for me!
Does anyone else have any little tricks like this for storing tackle?
Cheers!!

Cray Bait Range and Pricing - Shore Catch Post 10
Submitted by Shore Catch on Thu, 2016-10-20 21:52My apologies for not writing this post sooner. It has been a reasonably difficult job to evaluate exactly the cray bait we will supply in 2016 and the associated costs. Add in the bulky nature of the frozen bait and it is quite a logistical exercise.
We will stock Blue Mackerel, Tuna Heads, Orange Roughy Heads and Mixed Fish Pieces and Heads (blue mackerel chunks, mullet chunks, reef fish heads and wings, tuna heads, roughy heads, and other assorted suitable material with composition depending on availability).
You can purchase cray bait from us in 20kg boxes or 5kg bags (9-12 pieces per bag). We have arrangements with suppliers where we will receive daily delivery of bulk bait as required, although there are sometimes supply issues with different baits from time to time. An image of the freezer holding the 5kg bags is below.

As mentioned in a previous post comment, the price of cray bait varies considerably across the retail suppliers and we would really appreciate Member comment on whether our pricing is appropriate. We have set our initial prices on the basis of bulk distribution so margins don’t have to be inflated and unreasonable. Do you think we are high, low, or right on each size offering as set out below? Is there anything else?
$65 – 20kg Blue Mackerel
$60 – 20kg Mixed Fish Pieces
$55 – 20kg Tuna Heads
$50 – 20kg Orange Roughy Heads
$45 – 18kg Mulie Seconds
$20 – 5kg Blue Mackerel
$20 – 5kg Mixed Fish Pieces
$17.50 – 5kg Tuna Heads
$17.50 – 5kg Orange Roughy Heads
The best way to ensure we can supply your requirements is to order in advance. We will have shop stock every day but certain items do sell out. You can come in, order through our web site, or for orders over 50kg contact us to arrange.
It looks like it will be a good season. Our aim is to supply quality bait for a fair price from a business in Wangara that has all the required approvals to do so.
Thanks again for your support. Mick

Freediving for crays
Submitted by br3nno on Thu, 2016-10-20 00:31Hey dudes
Looking for general areas where it's max 5m depth where I can catch some crays. Was thinking around burns rocks. Would there still be whites around there? Or have they walked into deeper waters.
Any general advice or direction would be great, only ever used pots, never dived but have a loop handy.

Any catches in pots yet?
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2016-10-18 07:53Have seen a few good catches of crays by divers already and I'm keen to get the pots out Friday arvo. I've heard it's hard going before the whites for pots (I've got plastic) but the last few years I've tried half heartedly and I'm going to give it a good crack this year. Pots in by Friday arvo then cart up by 3am sat sun mon tue... see how I go (weather pending)
