Greenhead info
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2013-09-23 11:11We are heading up to Greenhead for the long weekend, and just chasing a little info on the place, fishing, boat ramp etc?
One bloke i work with said he was up there a week ago and half the boat ramp was closed as it had been damaged by the storms? The boat ramp itself, is it generally a safe easy to use ramp?
Fishing wise, looks fairly easy to go either north or south of the main reef? Any publically known barges etc where some sambo jigging can be done?
Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Denham/monkey mia
Submitted by Murphdirt511 on Mon, 2013-09-23 06:23Hi everyone, I just have a few questions about Denham / monkey Mia as I heading there this weekend for a week. I have a 4.75m boat and been told I wasting my time going up this time of the year as the winds are apparently real bad. As we are staying in Denham if it blows up/when it blows up can u go to the monkey Mia side and still fish from a boat or is the chop still unbearable. Any help will be much appreciated its just me and my gf heading up and she loves fishing too so would love to now more about the place. Thanks

flushing your engine
Submitted by Fish guts on Sun, 2013-09-22 16:54just curious. when flushing your engine. does anyone disconnect the fuel line while flushing so fuel drains out the carbbies? i often do that but i have been experiencing fuel surging issues of late. i have changed fuel filter and always have full tanks when i head out. doesnt seem to be sucking air and only does it every now and again. only thing i can put it down to is disconnecting the fuel line when i flush the engine. i have an 1998 (or there a bouts) Toshatsu. any thoughts?

Rod damage/fault advice
Submitted by Goodz on Sun, 2013-09-22 16:28Last trip out I noticed my much beloved Xzoga rod had a bit of an issue between the 2nd and 3rd eyes. Seems that the other layer has split. Is this going to turn into a bigger issue in the future or cause any major weak spot that may break under load or is it really only cosmetic? I do like to fish this rod pretty hard and have always considered it unbreakable. It's 3 years old now but apart from that it's still it top condition.

Do the crime do the fine
Submitted by meglodon on Sat, 2013-09-21 21:36This bit of info is taken from the ABC 720 radio fishing column today. A couple of "fishos" thought that the fishing regs and the future of our fishing future don't count for much. Big and expensive mistake. I for one are very glad to see the fisheries boys make the pinch on people of this ilk, well done guys/girls.
HEAVY COURT FINES FOR PRE-CHRISTMAS FISHING TRIPS Pre-Christmas fishing trips in the Pilbara had their sequel in the Karratha Court earlier this month, when two men were issued with heavy fines for taking undersize high-risk demersal fish species and other offences. Taking undersize fish presents a risk to the sustainability of Western Australia’s fisheries, so they are protected by legislation.
Four days before Christmas in 2012, a Karratha angler had his catch checked by Fisheries and Marine Officers (FMOs) at Dampier’s Hampton Harbour Boat Ramp and was found to have a total of 43 fish. 17 of the finfish were undersize and included demersal species known as blue tuskfish, redspot emperor, and coral trout and the nearshore species stripey seaperch. On Tuesday 10 September he was ordered to pay $3,600 for this offence and given a fine, penalty and costs totalling $3,239.25 for possessing 15 fish in excess of the group bag limit.
The Court was told that when an FMO asked him whether he knew the local fishing rules he said “it’s just sometimes I don’t fish very often, so I take home whatever I catch”. Reflecting on the case, Karratha Supervising FMO Michael Dunne said the angler’s overall penalty was $6,839.35 – an important message for anyone who might ignore the rules. In another case heard on 10 September, another Karratha angler was fined $2,000 for failing to state his name and principal place of residence. He had been questioned by FMOs at a Dampier boat ramp two days before Christmas in 2012 and the court was told he had stated false particulars in order to avoid receiving a fine. A check of his catch found an undersized coral trout, which was able to be returned to the water on the day, but in court this week he was given a fine and additional penalty of $1,450 for having possession of the fish, which at 42 cm was totally protected.
Mr Dunne said size limits were very important, as most fishers recognised. “The size limits allow fish to reach maturity to complete their breeding cycle, which is vital for the future of high-risk demersal species, which are long-lived and slow-growing,” he said. “The minimum legal size for coral trout is 45 cm.” For all of his offences, the angler was ordered to pay a total of $3,579.35.

Pinkies Galore. Help!
Submitted by Browndog on Sat, 2013-09-21 13:24Hi All.
Went out last night with a mate Dave around Sulphur Rock and Harding Rock, (Just inside Garden Island) hoping to bag my first sized Cockburn Pinkie. On the water about 5.00pm and conditions were fantastic. We were the only boat there to start with, plenty of action on the sounder (well it looked good to me!) so burley bucket was deployed & baits sent down. Wrasse were absolutely thick, we were in about 8m and you literally couldn't get a bait to the bottom. Tried with weights, without weights, casting away from the boat butthe pickers were unbelievable. After dark they dropped right off, and we had high hopes of getting the big Pinkie!
First snapper like fish on board was a little tacker, about 15cm, and looked like a cross between a pinkie and a silver bream. No blue spots at all, and generally silver in colour, but had a definite pink sheen under the lights? Anyways he was the first, followed by plenty more 15-20cm sized pinks over the course of the night, all looking nice & healthy. A few more boats joined us after dark, but nothing substantial landed. The decision was made to try Harding rock, a quick trip over there (conditions were great!) and the sounder lit up like I have never seen! Pulled up on a steep drop off from about 5m down to 9m, with lots of fish on the sounder. This is it we thought!
Burley deployed, baits dropped, hundreds of bites, lots of baby pinks but no larger models. We both had a few more serious bites, but didn't manage to hook up. We tried weighted rigs, floaters, whole baby squid, whole mulies, mulie chunks, squid chunks, single hooks, snelled pairs, big hooks, little hooks all sorts to no avail. There was a kamikaze dolphin cruising around, was very curious and I think he wanted us to feed him (we didn't). I put the prawn light in the water while he was hanging around and had a great view, they are a good looking creature. I found it strange that we didn't get any herring or gardies (certainly plenty of burley), whiting or even skippy. Other than Pinkies & Wrasse, we caught a few snook, a couple of rock cod & trumpeter.
Back to the ramp, tail between our legs, around 11.30pm. Probably a solid five hours fishing, and not one keeper on board. No regrets, it was a great night, boat lights worked beatifully (this was their first "real" test) and good company, but I was really hoping for at least a feed, and my Mrs is giving me grief! She threatened to put my boat on Gumtree unless I can come up with the goods!
So please, for the love of all that is good, somebody help me out? I probably won't get another chance before the ban, but will try the outside of GI or again after the demersal ban.
Failing that I'm gonna have to call past Kailis on my way home next time.
Cheers,
BD.

North mole snapper
Submitted by slosh30 on Fri, 2013-09-20 14:43My Dad and I are heading down to South Mole on Saturday morning hoping for a lucky LBSnapper. Can anyone suggest a rig to use? I would normally use a paternoster, 2 dropper loops, 8/0 and 5/0 keeper hook but I'm not sure if this would be suffice for snapper off the rocks?
Any help or advice would be much aappreciated cheers Luke

Outriggers - has anyone made there own
Submitted by Paul N on Fri, 2013-09-20 12:47I have a set of rod riggers but was thinking about making outriggers, if it's possible. I know you can buy them but I get a kick out of making things when I can . I can fabricate some bases easily enough but was wondering what to use for the poles . I have access to some 18foot extendable ( telescopic) aluminium poles but they seem a bit flimsy at the tip section . not sure how stiff they need to be . Never been on a boat with outriggers so not sure what they should be like . If anyone has had a go at making there own I would appreciate any tips or ideas .
Thanks
Paul

warning to the people who have saved there money over the years
Submitted by petermac on Thu, 2013-09-19 19:45after getting slugged with a 14k tax bill for the last financial year, I got a letter from the ATO today telling me my investments make too much money and I have to pay PAYE tax now on it. What the hell. I am only 52 and have to support myself and my family as (I live on the money that my investments make) I cant work due to injury's . The money I have I made by leaving school at 15 and working my guts out in the Pilbara and whilst I had fun up there I saved my pennys,
I have mates that did the same but wasted all their money and are on disability pensions or the dole now, so much for preparing for later in life, I would be better off going to the casino with my money betting it on the toss of a coin, if I win I double my money, if I lose it makes me entitled to government services. what a joke no incentive for preparing for later life
