cubing at the trench?
Submitted by grayzeee on Tue, 2013-01-15 18:14Has anyone been out and given this a go???
Didn't get to give it a go last summer , but seriously thinking about taking a few blocks out there and spending a few hrs drifting.
Maybe pick up some live baits and balloon them.
Any idea's on rigs as in poundage and hook sizes??

FADs out of rottnest
Submitted by Putty on Tue, 2013-01-15 16:32Hi guyZ
my friend Rapala and I, we are going to head out to the FADs near rotto next weekend
we gonna beach the boat at rotto, stay overnite and then head out in the early morning
anybody been out there before? anybody willing to give us some tips on how to land some beast?
we have been doing a bit of trolling with lures before (mostly jurien bay and shark bay) but really we only caught some spanish, some tuna nothing super...so yes more blind luck rather than technique...(or that's the way I feel it anyway)
so what are the general rules..
-3 lures in the water at different depths
-bright lures if the sky is cloudy, dark lures if it is sunny
-trolling speed around 5-8 knowts
-is it better to troll with the sun behind right?!
-does it make sense to chuck some fish oil while trolling?
I know we really suck at it but please give us some advice ![]()
also is anygood jigging out there? again we don't have much experience with it as we mainly fish with sinckers and baits
thanks

Complete Newbie To Fishing
Submitted by Daly87 on Tue, 2013-01-15 14:31Hey Guys,
Id like a bit of advice/pointers if you dont mind sparing the time. Iv never fished before last saturday when we went camping down near Dunsborough, I was watching a few guys casting on the beach thought id give it a shot. Bought my self a 12' Rod and Reel Combo ( Had no idea what to buy but i walked away with a Jarvis Walker Aquatec 12' Surf, with the Aquatec 750 reel, cost me $40 in a sale so...)
Any way I got a couple of 'whiting Rigs', attached some prawns and went away. Caught a few fish... have no idea what they are so im going to search after posting this. I just loved the day of fishing! Had no idea what i was doing but it was great! Now im back in Mandurah and want to continue but with abit more knowledge. Iv been reading around and I went to fishing shop near by asking for advice but the guy was so rude and unhelpful, i can only assume it was because I didnt know what fish i wanted to catch....as i dont know what will be a good start... i ended up walking out. Iv heard a few people mention whiting and bream? Are these a good start to aim for? If so, would i just continue to buy the 'Whiting Rigs' and prawns as i did or would you guys recomend the soft jelly type lures??... also where are some good spots to start? times etc?
Any thing you can comment on my rod, good spots, bait/lures, hooks, recomended fish to aim for, even the fish i caught!!
hope you can help me more than the guy at the local shop as i really enjoyed the day and would like to give a good go at getting into the sport (also like boats so its a good excuse to get a little one in the future)
Thanks!
Colin

Fishing Knots
Submitted by pharlap on Tue, 2013-01-15 09:35Just trying to get an opinion on everyones preference of knots.
Is it one knot fits all ? ie "I only use one knot for all tying" if so what is that knot.
Is it one knot for terminal tying ? ie swivels and hooks.
Or is it "I use this knot for tying to hooks, this knot for swivels, split rings, this knot from leader to mono..Braid ?
I've had a search and read thru past posts, but couldn't get really what I wanted.

Poor torium
Submitted by Chris fish on Mon, 2013-01-14 21:01Here's a couple of photos from when I serviced my torium 50, this reel has caught well over 20 sharks over 2m and hooked so so many more and some monstourous rays!! The gears and bearings are all still fine with little or no wear considering its spent it's life on full drag with 14kg+ of pressure constantly. The drag washers are almost non existent with hot spots on the steel washers. New set of drag washers are on there way and she will be good to go again. Just goes to show that you don't need top of the line to catch big stuff.

Complete Novice Fisherpeople - Perth!
Submitted by Rebecca Frank on Mon, 2013-01-14 15:50Hi all
I was just wondering what advice you can give 2 complete novice fishpeople! I've been on a couple of deep sea fishing trips and absolutely loved it and want to start doing much more fishing on weekends.
We have a little boat, 2 x rods and some lures etc. We were told that using squid out by Garden Island is pretty good.
Can anyone give me some more advice on what to use, where to go etc etc?
Cheers

Shark Bay pelagic action inshore
Submitted by Mojohand on Mon, 2013-01-14 13:17I am going up to Denham in April and was hoping to catch some maccies and any other pelagics cruising around. I have not been there before and the research I have done mentions spots around Dirt Hartog Island and South passage, which sound great, but I wont be able to get that far. Is it worth trolling around out from Denham or Monkie Mia or should I just focus on catching a few pinkies.

Lowrance HDS5xGen2 vs Furuno 620
Submitted by timboon on Mon, 2013-01-14 10:19FW Crew,
After your thoughts here on this pair - Lowrance HDS5xGen2 vs Furuno 620, will be mostly bottom bashing out to about 80m...
The 50/200 tranni was what i was expecting to run with either unit...
Looking to import from the US, apart from the Geofencing with the Lowrance is there anything else I need to be aware of?
Cheers

Shark Bay Advice
Submitted by spook on Mon, 2013-01-14 10:10Hi all, I haven't been to Shark Bay before and I'm thinking of going this year. I've got a 6.5m boat that gets me most places and I'm keen landbased. I've done the search thing on here too. I would like to ask how you guys find it as an all round fishing holiday destination? I know its a great place for snapper but can you also have a troll for tuna and macs on a slow day, is there places worth trying for trevs or to cast lures on the flats for anything? If the wind picks up are there places to fish on the other side of dehnam? The water looks quite shallow aswell so I'm guessing you would have to drive around and find where the schools are holding? Is Dirk Hartog worth driving to and fishing for a day trip? I understand that it usually takes a while to work a spot out before you can get onto fish and enjoy the satisfaction doing it that way but I don't want to head to Shark Bay if its just a fill your freezer with snapper spots. I would like to try a few different things if I'm going away and catch a few different species for mainly sport. Looking forward to your responses, cheers. Brent

New improvised Swan River SP rig
Submitted by Joodles on Mon, 2013-01-14 09:15Check out this bunky I pulled off a snag whilst wading the Swan...
looks like 30lb braid straight through, a few swivels and clips, a lump of a lead and Gulp grub on the end
I can just picture old mate down at his local tackle store going "nah mate, plastics just aren't working for me'!

Anyone wanna take me and a mate offshore?
Submitted by Felix on Mon, 2013-01-14 08:55Hello all.
Decided our boat is a little small for going where we want to fish. So before I bite the bullet and buy a bigger boat, id like to go out a couple of times wite others to see how other boats handle and if I actually like fishing the deeper stuff over here (i'm from NSW).
So question is, will anyone take me and one other bloke out jigging, drift baiting? We are happy to pay our share (or even a bit more).
Cheers
Felix

demersal jigging/plastics set up?
Submitted by mcgoo on Sun, 2013-01-13 10:28Just wondering what combo's people are using for demersal plastics fishing and jigging?
Im heading out on a charter tomorrow morning from Hillarys and im wondering if I should go grab a few plastics and jigs and take my own rod with me.. But im not sure if I will be a bit under gunned..
The combo I was thinking about taking is a Shimano Jewel 762 snapper 5-8kg rod with Penn spinfisher 460 loaded with 20lb braid..
Your thoughts? Let me know if this is ridiculous...

Catch care
Submitted by JCM on Sun, 2013-01-13 08:26Wondering how the majority of boat fishers care for their catch.
Ive been fishing out wide, where the skipper does not store his fish on ice, nor are they killed, bled or gutted. They are simply thrown straight off the hook, still flapping into an under floor compartment with a couple of buckets of sea water, the water is pumped out & replaced once or twice during the day. The skipper argues that good clean cold sea water is good enough. I'm talking prime deep sea fish, being out dawn till after midday.
Appreciate any comments
