Young fellas first dhui
Submitted by Oracle on Sun, 2011-07-17 19:48The youg fella doesn't normally get too excited by the thoughts of going for a fish, but for whatever reason, he said he would so off we went. Launched from Mindarie and headed out. Got into the 40's and got a great flare up. Showed him what to do and let him drop away while I got my gear togethor. About 20 seconds later I get the "dad, I think I've got a fish" with a big bend in the rod. "Think you could be right! - lift and wind, lift and wind...." 5 minute later, up pops a little 62 cm dhui and big smiles all round. Bloody great start I think

Where did all this water come from?
Submitted by sammy85 on Sun, 2011-07-17 18:41Hi all just asking for some advice.
Recently purchased my first boat a 5.3 razorline ali runabout. I went out today from two rocks and with the decent swells and the generous gap underneath my transom door saw a lot of water coming into the deck. As I don't have a bilge pump yet,was planning to go buy one tomorrow, on the way back in the boat was very ass heavy and I could feel the extra weight coming in I knew there was quite an amount of water in the hull. Upon taking out the bung at least 100l if not more water came out of the hull.
I just want to know if this is normal in a boat with a bilge or is water getting through the deck into the hull somewhere it isn't supposed to be.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction or suggest where I can take it to get it checked out. I live in kallaroo any insight is greatly appreciated. Cheers

2-3kg rod(s) to suit AVET SX and MX o/h reels.
Submitted by Lastchance on Sun, 2011-07-17 17:39Gday guys and girls,
Im chasing some rod options for casting and trolling in the 2 and 3 kg line class that would suit these reels. Any ideas out there? Have found shitloads of spinning, but nothing really in overhead. (Would prefer dedicated trolling and casting rods to suit both size reels - ie 1 x SX trolling and 1 x SX casting 1 X MX casting etc)
Thanks

Good offshore plastics rod?
Submitted by bigbadbustling on Sun, 2011-07-17 13:11Just wondering what rods people recommend for softplastics/octo-jig demersal fishing offshore?
I've got a Daiwa Sol 3000 or a Daiwa Certate 4000 that I can match with the rod fishing PE2 or 3
I'm thinking the smaller profile the better but don't know which ones have the rigidity to work plastics rigged on decent sized jig heads, and with enough down low power to lean into a decent fish.
I sometimes fish the 15-20m behind 3-mile or typically head to the 35-60m areas fishing for the likely suspects.

customer service skills
Submitted by nico on Sun, 2011-07-17 09:08You would think with struggling economy and the marine industry in a shambles marine dealerships would be doing the upmost to do their best i think Perth dealers should wake up. Sure i didn,t want to buy a boat package however was looking at spending a few k I too are in the marine industry and i tell you what guys we are here not to serve the customer but delight them.Having knowledge is one thing but personality and customer skills is another is it realy that hard to have a smile on your face. Four times i have been too the same dealership with three strike outs never again.

Shark circles boat off Freo
Submitted by bod on Sat, 2011-07-16 17:57Amateur fisherman Richard Minett admits he was just a little bit nervous when this monster 5m great white zoned in on his small fishing boat 6km off Fremantle on Wednesday.
"It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen," he said.
"It was bigger than my 4.6m boat, and if it decided to have a go at us, we would have been in trouble."
Mr Minett said the shark passed up and down the boat a dozen times before it disappeared.
"And then we saw its fin reappear a minute later about 20m away," he said.
"It was just tracking straight at the boat, coming right towards us and then it swerved and went to the side again.
"We didn't feel threatened in any way, just a little nervous. The thing was damn big."
Mr Minett's boat was anchored halfway between Rottnest and Fremantle as he fished at twilight with two friends. "We can't stop talking about it," he said. "The size of it was mind-boggling."
Shark expert Rory McAuley said more great white sightings had been reported off Perth in the past few months.
"We didn't have as many over the summer but more have been reported recently," he said.
"What that particular shark is doing I really couldn't say, but most of them are just passing through."

Richard Minnett said the shark passed the boat a dozen times before it disappeared.

Surf Fishing near river mouths
Submitted by Hairyone on Sat, 2011-07-16 13:37Gday,
We are about to head down the beach for a fish in a spot we usually get a few Tailor and Mulloway. After recent rains a couple of local rivers have made it to the sea in this area ( Bowes River, Oakabella, Oakajee etc.) and are still running.
Is fishing in the sea side of the mouths a good thing if they arent flowing to hard or dont the fish like the fresh water?
If so what type of fish are likely to hang around in that area?
Any advice would be great!
Cheers

Sea weed predictions?
Submitted by Snags on Sat, 2011-07-16 10:48Does anyone know what the seaweed situation in moore river is like at the moment?
I'm planning on going up there tomorrow morning but would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me if it's all weeded up so I dont waste my time.
Also, is there anyway to predict when seaweed comes in and clears out? Eg it comes in after x days of certain wind direction and swells before clearing out after x days of specific conditions? Are there any general rules like this, whereby studying past conditions, we can make good judgements about the likeliness of there being seaweed present?
Cheers.

Crabs
Submitted by danno on Fri, 2011-07-15 21:02Hey all.
I'm heading down to busso for a squidding adventure and a bit of fishing thrown in for a good feed. I was wondering if it is worth taking some crab nets down and get some crabs, squid and fish for a feed?
Also what is everyone favourite bait to use for drop netting? I just use fresh fish frames, like herring or bait fish like yellow tail.
Cheers danno.

kayaker wrestles shark
Submitted by bod on Thu, 2011-07-14 18:30
just saw this on the news. http://kayakyak.blogspot.com/ video in here under 'Catch and Release'
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KABC) --
Some local fishermen nearly turned out to be lunch for a hungry shark, and it was all caught on tape.
Scotty Westgaard and David Saldamando are self-described hard-core kayak anglers. They like to spend their weekends catching and releasing sharks in local waters.
They were reeling in an unknown catch off Santa Barbara's shoreline on Saturday, but when the fish got to the surface, the men realized it was an 8-foot thresher shark.
Instead of tossing it back into the water, they attempted a photo op, grabbing the shark by the tail and tried to hold it on their lap.
The shark wasn't having it and bucked, flipping one of the men into the water. For more than 30 minutes, Saldamando fought with his catch.
Surprisingly he wasn't worried about getting bitten. "I was more worried about all my gear. I was afraid I lost a reel or rod. I forgot if I tied everything down, so to tell you the truth, I was terrified I lost a bunch of stuff," he said.
The fishermen weren't injured for the most part, and they released the shark.
Earlier in the day, they did catch a much smaller thresher shark, but it was a much more uneventful catch-and-release encounter.

Current direction
Submitted by Batty on Thu, 2011-07-14 16:32Hi, I was wondering if there is any way I can find out the current speed and direction on the Internet for Perth region, Rotto up to Two Rocks.
Also how does this affect the fishing when in 40m+ obviously more lead required when strong current but do the fish prefer slow or fast current ?
Any advice much appreciated

Theres fish in them thar waters
Submitted by JohnF on Thu, 2011-07-14 16:22Went for a very quick late arvo snapper sess with Schecky last night. A bearing in the outboard leg crapped itself half way to the spot so we just stopped and fished where we were, not ideal, and picked up a few baker and other rubbish on softies but as soon as the sun peaked under the horizon, the fish came out......sounder lit up, even though the ground was at best average.....50 and 200 kHz below.
Looked good, and landed a small dhu which was released before my softy got nailed a few minutes later.....head shakes confirming a nice snapper.......great battle on light gear, with numerous good runs, only to straighten the poxy TT jig hook as I was starting to win the battle........on PE 0.5.......time for a different jig head make!
Schecky then got hit, nice fight on bream gear, landed this 53 cm dhu....was in goof nick, so quick snap and released it to make more dhu pups.
My young bloke got a few nice hits from susepced snapper but did not hook up and then as usual it went quiet, so we tootled off back home at a brisk 4 knots.......with the bearing squeeling in protest.......thats gonna be expensive!!!!!

Popper assist hooks
Submitted by turts on Thu, 2011-07-14 11:21hi guys notice a lot of people GT poppering run assist hooks and more so one off the tow point in the cup of the lure
is this mainly to allow for fish grabbing the head?
have a few poppers im rigging for kings not sure whether to just run em off where the trebles are or one front and back, etc etc
to rig from the tow point can you just feed it thru the lure ring or do you need to attach a split ring and then solid ring similar to terminal jigging gear?
tossing up whether to just run trebles, singles or assist hooks. so many options
