Mulloway Geraldton
Submitted by Kingfisher549 on Mon, 2010-05-03 14:58Fished Flatrocks on the weekend just south of Geraldton. Weather was great but the swell was building and the weed in the water was bad. Settled in to fish an area called Secret Mens Business. Put out two rods but found it to difficult with the weed so only fished with one.
Using Mullet strips as bait and a strandard rig with a large sinker to hold bottom I sat back and waited. At 5.45pm the rod bent over and line headed west. After realising it wasnt weed I got to the rod quickly and began to fight something large.
The fish felt like a shark running up and down the beach and taking line at every chance it had, after 15 minutes the fish still had plenty of energy but was now in the weed close to shore. Large fish, weed and 10kg line is not a good combo.
The fish finally surfaced after what seemed a very long fight but was probably 20 minutes max and washed in on a small wave.
At 17.2kgs it was one of the best Mulloway I have landed this year.
Will post pics tomorrow when my mate emails them.

One Shot
Submitted by poddyfish on Wed, 2010-04-28 22:43One fish that has been tops of my 2 spear list since moving back south is the WA Dhufish... Ive caught my share on line ect but on spear and freediving was what i really wanted.... Today was my lucky day
Forecast was nice but the swell has been cranking lately and vis was always gonna be the x-factor for us. My dive buddy called at lunch time to see if all was a goer and with that the battle plan rolled into action. Hit the marina at about 1pm to a lovely flat sea a dropping swell and not so clear water. Heading out towards the channel markers and onto hells gates the vis began to clear and our hopes of some divable conditions began to rise. We pressed on.
Today we started to diving in a area not visited to previously and straight away it became evident that the swell was still causing havoc for us - strong surge and cloudy vis. Rob spotted a nice trout towards the end of our little warm up dives in 6m but it didnt like the look of the big orca railgun he was holding and bolted after the one sighting.. He took a nice 40cm skippy heading back to the boat but was spewing the trout didnt play ball.
The next spot again drew blank with the swell vis thingo hampering our efforts and a afternoon sky clouding up also didnt help. The 3rd spot was to be a dive i wont forget for aloooong time.
Into the drink and scouted the area for some 30mins before making the decision with rob to head back boatwards and try again somewhere else. Heading back slowly i was in about 8m of water and following rob about halfway along his floatline say 10 or so metres when we moved over a sandy hole between bombies. I looked down and could not believe my eyes! There she was , the fish ive waited for. Pumped was a understatement my whole body was shaking! DONT FU*K THIS UP! I breathed up and dove leveling out just above the fish. Nervous as hell my gun outstretched and shaking the fish presented 2 different shots before gettin jumpy and moving off. I resurfaced gutted id blown my chance and cursing i didnt take the shot. But she didnt move too far and i caught sight or her again and repeated the move... This time she was off in a flash into a big cave. A quick check proved i wouldnt be finding her in a hurry in the dark.
Back on the surface i called for rob who was de-gearing back in the boat by now to come over for a look. He has a much better bottom time then me and together we dove the cave willing the fish to reappear but......... no avail
I was totally shattered at missing this oppotunity and decided to head back to the sand patch just for a look - nothing... Then i spied a much smaller ledge / cave so i went for a look there... On the bottom it looked very fishy but still nothing of note... I turned 180 degree and kicked once heading back to the top surrounded by big (3-5kg) buffies.... I was very tempted to shoot one for burley but thought twice in the low vis conditions and fading light. Hitting the surface and scanning i caught a silver flash deep under my fins. She was BACK! The big cave must have been a big swim thru and the same fish had come out for a sticky beak! This time i thought... Breathing up i dove as quiet as i could... The fish swimming away from me at a slight angle... Catching site of me she turned ever so slightly for a better look...
BANG - straight thru the brain and out the mouth from slightly above and behind the fish i had stoned my first dhuie! Grabbing her in the gills i realised it was much larger than i had thought.... OVER THE MOOOOOON!
Back in the boat a heap of pics and a celebratory beer capped off my special arvo. We dove some more a touch later with rob finding another uncooperative trout but i was so stoked i didnt mind what happened from then on. Althought we did bag 6 nice crays before heading in..
Cheers for reading i know its abit of a drabble but everyone has there special fish and this has been mine for some time and i wanted to share with you all...... She measured 84cms and pulled the scales down to almost 11kgs......

Pekan - Malaysia
Submitted by DazSamFishing on Mon, 2010-04-26 20:54Well, we've just returned from a wonderful trip visiting Malaysia & Singapore. I have to say, it was the best holiday I've had so far (with minimal fishing involved). We saw so much & ate so many wonderful foods. The hospitality was first class & we're already heavily missing the lifestyle & food!
I was quite fortunate to have Darren (also a FW member) organise a 2 day trip for me & 3 French fishing journalists to fish the waters off the town of Pekan (south east Malaysia).
We used light tackle to chase a variety of fish located approx 30+k's offshore. The spaniards made a good appearance on both days, with poppers & bibbed minnows being the most productive offerings.
The bibbed minnows (Pin Tails) were really versatile. They are a sinking lure which can be retrieved at a very high pace without fouling. We used a 40g version for maximum casting capability.
I really enjoyed using this type of lure. We would cast around the bait schools & use a flat out retrieve with a few flicks of the rod tip. The macks were simply excited by the speed & action this lure made. This type of lure would be the ideal casting lure in Exmouth!
Casting various lures, popping & jigging were also exercised. We used a variety of light demersal jigs (from 20-50g) & threw light to middle weight poppers (FCL Labo & El Toro/Blackjack design). We caught small trout & various cod & trevally species on jigs. Even the skipper got in on the jigging action!
Small GT's also made an appearance & I was unfortunate to have an estimated 15kg model swipe a popper while popping early on day 2.
The macks also collected a few of our jigs & Pin Tails over the 2 day period.
Longtom were in plague proportions, however, Darren managed to connect to umpteen longy's over the trip. (He is the local longtom specialist).
The French fisherman (freshwater specialists), were given a real challenge trying to fish for saltwater species that have completely different behaviors than any freshwater fish. They still managed a few fish amongst them & they really enjoyed the experience.
The food & company was simply sensational! Our next trip back will be booked very shortly indeed.
I've included a few pics.
Daz
P.S. Special thanks to Frank & Paula (for painting our house while we were away!) & Darren & Wendy for a fantastic time.

Baitless at the Abrolhos
Submitted by Lucky Tim on Wed, 2010-04-21 19:29Brent, Glenn and I spent a few nights at the Abrolhos visiting Doush who is a cray decky over there. We took Brent’s Trophy over and did it in style.
We decided not to take any bait and see how we fared on jigs and soft plastics and we didn’t come home disappointed. Daz had done a little recon for us and within a hour of being there we were onto a few. You would think there wouldn’t be any pingers out there.....
My first fish for the trip, a baldie on a Fanky jig. There’s that pinger again......
I also nailed my first ever dhuie just after, and on a plastic so was stoked. Daz showed us all up with some good dhuie numbers on his new fav plastic- a 7” Mcarthy in olive pearl.
The next day we hit a spot nearby and seeing as we had no marks out there we trolled for a hour while looking and got 7 or 8 mackies. We marked a few spots and got a few dhuies and trout on jigs and plastics, and Brent landed a really nice pinky while Glenn got himself his first plastic dhuie too.
We pulled the pots that arvo and got a feed together, then hit the cleaning table and a few cans.
Doush being Doush.
The next day Daz had to work so the 3 of us went to a untried spot. We found a few lumps and it was on. Brent was on fire, first jigging this 15kg cobia.
Then landing a few trout, plus this hook up of 2 well and truely legal trout on the one jig!
Fish of the day!
We then came back in and grabbed Daz and refuelled and hit another untried spot. We started with a troll and Glenn landed this yellowfin tuna
While Daz and I had a double hook up for the 2 biggest dhuies of the trip, his one a octa style jig and mine on a jig
Anyway during our stay we fished, set and pulled some cray pots, had a swim and a spear and just relaxed. We even managed a few brews, some pool and ping pong at the pub over there one evening.
We had a fish on our last morning and Brent finished the way he started, with a nice dhuie.
The weather couldn’t have been better, the company was great and the fishing was way better than we expected and can’t wait to do it all again. We still left plenty of things to do for next time. I've gotta send out a big thanks to Brent and Daz for the trip.

PB Barra....
Submitted by Marky on Mon, 2010-04-19 20:59Hey guys and girls,
Well what a weekend out at Camballin it was.... Headed out to a mates place there friday arvo... Downed a few beverages... Watched the sunset go down ova the Looma ranges there... Watched Eagles finally have a win.... Then hit up Camballin Barrage in the morning for a good session off the concrete wall. Barra smashing almost everything we threw at them... No huge ones thou.. All under 50cm... Biggest was on a soft plastic which was my first on a softy.... Sweet... Between the two of us we got 14.. All released...
Then headed off for some lunch back home and a few well deserved beers.... After that we thought we were on such a good roll and the prospect of there being some bigger ones around was too much so we loaded the boat and off again to a spot abit closer to home.... Launched the boat and we were on the troll....
Within 5 mins... hooked up another littly to 50cm.... A few more hits and a couple more smaller ones to 60cm we found a nice snag we thought we'd flick at....
1st flick and BOOF...... Right at the boat a huge barra nearly jumped in the boat on its first jump... Scotty was on.... Backing the boat out from the snag and trying desperatly to pull her away from the sticks... After a good 5 mins she was in the boat for Scotty's PB 91cm..... Happy as.....
After we calmed down we were back on troll..... about an hr later had another small one landed... Good fun... With the day fastly coming to an end and my anxiety killing me waiting for a hit... BANG...... 3 secs later.... Dropped..... Bugger, that was a good fish...... absolutly devastated thinking that was my chance.... Turned the boat around and decided to make it our last troll back to the car before heading off...
Lures in... Coming past some over hanging trees and a small snag... BANG....... On like donkey kong I screamed... With a huge Barra breaking the surface... Lure completly engulfed..... Game on.... Scotty backed the boat out into the middle and me trying desperatly to pull it away from the snags.... Circled the boat. jump, jump, under the boat, jump, she was trying her best to bust me off..... With the leader fraying before my eyes I thought it'd be all over soon if I didnt get it in the net.... Afew more circles of the boat and she was in..... WOOOOOO.... Pumped and Relieved and after a few bigs screams and cheers it was a quick measure and she went 93cm,My New PB, Photo time and she was released.....
Great end to a great day.... Totalling 20 Barra between us for the day.. All successfully released to fight another day.... Does it get much better??
Cheers
Marky.

Todays mix bag
Submitted by Frank F on Sun, 2010-04-11 21:43Headed out early today with Joe Amato to beat the rush at the ramps. First stop was to get a feed of squid as it was still dark and our mission was offshore for some deep water species. Bagged 9 in a short time and enough for some squid rings tomorrow night.
We made our way out to the deeper waters, on our journey we did some trolling and picked up a nice size striped tuna and two smaller ones.
Headed to our destination for some reconnaissance, which was very quiet only to be greeted by Mr Green eye again and again. In saying this we found some good ground with some fish activity on the sounder but not biting.
The afternoon was getting on and nothing really excited me in the fish department, so we head to a deepish spot that I have caught Pink Snapper before. First drift Pinky to Joe, under size went back and I got a bronzy. Second drift Pinky to Joe, keeper and my first Grey Banded cod woohoo. It went 10kg unreal. Third drift Joe got another Pinky and I got a big leather jacket. Last drift I got a nice size pinky that went 4kg.
In the end It was a good day and a variety of seafood for dinner tomorrow night.

West End
Submitted by Lamby on Sun, 2010-04-11 21:13Quick shoot out wide with Tiimmbo to have a dive and pull our pots saw us pack a rod each 'just in case' glad we did!! First thing we shot out to one of our lumps with me not having much success and Timbo getting sh!t bricked by an unseen monster. We decided to have a quick dive and pull the pots calling by West End on the way, place was packed tighter than a.. well best left unsaid probably but it was packed.
Had a ball getting stuck into the Salmon and good to see a mass catch n release happening out there with everyone hooking up. Day soured a bit when one of the pots succumbed to light fingers, no prop chop checked the bottom thoroughly but that's the risk I suppose.

SW Fishwrecked Comp RESULTS
Submitted by damo6230 on Sun, 2010-04-11 17:59The first SW Fishwrecked comp has come and gone.
It was a great day and very successful as everyone that attended caught fish. Following is a report and some pictures of the day. We are in the process of writing an article for Reeltime so I have not posted some great photos so stay tuned for the article.
The weather was very good especially for those that fished the Cape.
It was a hectic friday trying to organise one and all and unfortunately Seaquest had to withdraw his boat from the comp due to a seal breaking at the prop due to unwanted braid he had picked up the day before chasing salmon and I hope you can get your motor fixed Brendan for Exmouth. A few crew dropped out due to health of other reasons so in all 12 members fished the comp.
MineMineMine (Helen) and Goodz (Ben) travelled down from Perth to rub shoulders with us locals and seeing Ben brought his family down the pressure was on to catch some fish. Thanks to Barneyboy (Mark) for subbing Ben into his boat after Brendan had to pull out.
Three boats hit the Cape while Bluetonic (BJ) and Garbo headed out from Bunbury.......
Those of us fishing the Cape found the salmon....
Me hooked up and
Jared not far behind.
Jared has just moved down from Kununurra and is finding the fishing different from the Barra....
Not long after Mark, Ben and Helen joined the fun
Gives you an idea of the size and this is Ben's fish
The school was about 10 tonne and just hung around all day. Metals, Poppers and Soft Plastics all did the damage. Was great watching Ben casting poppers and the ensuing surface strikes from the salmon.
After catching heaps of Salmon it was time to venture further afield. Feral (Clint) Nealez (yes I spelt it correct this time) and the Docta went west out to the lumps while Mark and I went around the Cape.
There was plenty of fish caught and the conditions were most favourable for the Cape.
Mark was the first to boat the elusive weed fish.....
Well Done Mark on such a unique capture... but would it be good enough to win the comp......
Mark with a Queenie
Kept in constant contact with Bj and Garbo fishing Bunbury and good to see Garbo finally jigging and well rewarded...ha ha
And yes BJ did catch one fish
While actually not that big BJ ......what he caught this KG on will be revealed in the Reeltime article..........
Apparently they were plagued by undersize pinkies and kamakazi jig loving rays..ha ha
While I headed in early to help organise the the after comp party the crews all fished on......
Feral's boat picked up a 10kg Dhuie a couple of miles off the cape but once again the salmon were keen to play.
That's Feral in the FW shirt and Mark and crew in the forground centre console.
After a long drive down and a longer day in the boat it was great to see Helen catch her first salmon.
With some great coaching from Ben she is rewarded with a solid salmon on SP
Fantastic effort Helen and hopefully worth the trip south. I understand the crew from Tackleshack supplied the gear so another great effort guys.
Due to numbers at the after party it was decided to just split the prizes into three $50 fishing vouchers.
Considering the travel and effort she displayed throughout the day and being her first salmon we awarded Helen a prize.
It was a great capture seeing she is new to fishing.
The other two vouchers were pulled from the hat, NOT my Puma pants...ha ha and accordingly Mark and NEALEZ (see I spelt it correct again) won these.
Mark kindly donated a prize consisting of SP jigheads and a bunch of Snapback packets. Garbo won these.
The party continued as a long day on the water needs a cold beer or three. Those that missed the comp due to work turned up the the BBQ.
NEALEZ, Clint and Dan1
A few more of the ragtag crew
So all up it was a very successful day. Thanks to all that attended and was great to meet some more crew. The comps are designed to allow members to meet up and fish, so don't be shy and join the festivities. It was great to finally meet crew who you talk to over the forum and I think everyone enjoyed themselves.
A big Thankyou to BJ for his help and place to party.........still laughing about "little billie" and his puma pants adventures...he he. Thanks to the skippers that graciously donated deckie spots and to all those crew that journeyed down to the SW, Feral and crew for donating the Dhuie and Nani for the BBQ and finally to Shantele (excuse my spelling if I have it wrong) for the food and munchies. Hopefully after I leave the comps continue.
When you all hit Exmouth for the comp first up say thanks to Adam and the fellow organisers, it's no easy task and a lot of effort from multiple crew goes into organising such a comp.
Likewise we have a donation for Fishwrecked so I'll send it up Adam
Fish species included, Sambos, Salmon, Skippy, Pigfish, Dhuies, KGW, Queenies, Leatherjackets, Pink and Red Snapper, Shallowtail and the usual suspects........
The SW aint so barren!

Boat licence UP UP
Submitted by roberta on Fri, 2010-04-09 17:52Well don't know about you all, just got our boat licence and its gone up for a 5.2 meter by $47.30 so now the boat costs to register $162.60, how has everybody else faired in another increase on top of electricity, gas, fishing license, RST license, cray and all other licenses. Getting beyond the joke to own a boat.
Where is the money going? Old fart when he got the boat the rego for it was $32 in 1982, up up and away.

Submitted by Richard Snellin on Fri, 2010-04-09 10:34Hey folks just got back from another great salmon trip down Augusta way, this was the last fish caught on the trip and the biggest at just over 8kg, she didn't come from a school tho, it took a mulie from a gutter only 30 metres from shore just as the sun was setting. In the 12 years that i've been going there its the second biggest salmon i've caught.

GI squidly didly
Submitted by scotto on Tue, 2010-04-06 09:12I had to be home from cervantes by sunday for dinner at the inlaws, so with the boat still hooked up, i gave juica the call to be at my place monday morning for a cockburn squid.
hit the water by 7.30 and straight to parmelia bank / woodies point, where we got 3 tiddlers in an hour and a half. made the call to go look for new ground, and headed to southern end of garden island, where the northerly drift was blowing us perfectly along the bank, towards the barracks on gi.
thats where the fun began!! about 3 metres of water, and the big winter squid were on!!! scored 14 absolute horses, with tubes to 36cms in about an hour! they were actually peeling line off our 1000 reels like they were spanish mackeral. orange jigs did the damage, but suprisingly, a dark green yozuri also did pretty well, but only when the sun peeked out from behind the clouds.
back at the ramp by 10.45, boat cleaned by 11.30, beer and fresh squid on the barby by preceisly 12pm. what a way to end the long weekend!!

Good Friday Fish
Submitted by barra66 on Fri, 2010-04-02 19:59A mate and I went out for a quick fish today, weather was a bit uncomfortable so moved in behind the reefs and found a patch of half kg skippy. We caught six or so and they were on the bite. I was fully loaded and at the back of the boat and never saw it but it took a decent fish and snapped me off..
All i saw was the white water of the after math, no idea all happened so fast could'nt see it, was behind the motor, but caught nothing at all after that..
Great fun spoiled by a predator!!!!

1st Swan River Mulloway!
Submitted by JohnSorrell on Wed, 2010-03-31 15:09Decided to head to the my favorite jetty on the swan river for a quick fish last night... Got there around 9pm and set up my big rig with a big mulie... After an hour my girlfriend rocks up, so I set her up to catch me some live bait on the flick rod. Luckily she got right into it and landed me a couple of big herring and a just size tailor, which i put straight on my big rig.... after another hour of fishing for bait, everything went dead quiet.. the wind died and the tailor stopped jumping... a second later my big rod starts to twitch and bounce around... as my GF was standing between me and my rod , i yell "Mulloway! MOVE!!!!!"... grab the rod and attempted to set the hooks... too soon.. ended up with a half chewed tailor and an angry girlfirend.... "bugger"... next chance, I rig a couple of big 7/0's and half a herring... 10 seconds later... bang... drag screaming... go to set hooks again.... another miss!!!! starting to feel the frustration now.... Rig up the other half of herring and wait, this time with no drag pressure on my reel.... 45 mins goes by while i stare anxiously at the tip of my rod... eventually my gf catches me another decent tailor... straight on the hooks and in 5 mins my reel starts going off again... this time I wait.. as my reel starts really screaming I slowly tightened the drag & set the hooks... "GOTCHA!!!" ... all hell breaks loose as this monster runs for the moorings.... "shiiit"... I manage to turn its head just in time, as it screams out into open water taking ~150m of line with ease on a heavy drag.... After 10 mins, the fish was tired enough to bring in, and after a couple more short runs, up comes the giant silver silhouette... I was speechless to say the least.. with a quick one handed gaff shot it was on the jetty... what a sight... my very 1st mulloway!!.. my lucky night :) 1.2m and i'm guessin around 25kg Swan River Mulloway... Not bad for my first :)
To everyone who says I should have released it... NO !!! Its mine now... I've spend way too many full moons for the last 4 years chasing this fish, so i'm keeping it... Everyone should be allowed to keep their first... :)
BTW, she forgave me :) and said "Hmm... Do you think it's big enough?"

Todays Crays
Submitted by tiimmbo on Tue, 2010-03-30 20:01Went out to rotto mid morning with Lamby in some very nice conditions today for a bit of a look around and chase some crays. Managed to bag 7 between us. Wasn't too much action about and a fair bit of surge under the water. They tasted very nice on the BBQ with a couple of coldies for dinner tonigh though. Had a very flat and quick trip home about 1pm.

Soupster does well in Micronesia
Submitted by soupster51 on Tue, 2010-03-30 16:45I went out with my work mate up here in Pohnpei as a part of the monthly fishing tournament. I wore my 'fishwrecked' shirt and did it proud. The conditions at times were very ordinary to say the least with current coming from three different directions and up to 30knots of wind. The tournament was a 'Catch 5' tournament with Marlin, Yellow-fin tuna, skip-jack tuna, Mahi Mahi and Wahoo being the target species. In between holding on for dear life we attempted to work our way through the species. It was my plan that once I caught the target I would change lure types and attempt to work through the list. Sometimes it doesn't work out that way and you catch something you already have, but everything is kept here. Nothing goes to waste. We even give the frames away to the local people that live near our house; they are more than happy to eat the guts and boil up the frames. Anyway we ended up with Wahoo, yellow-fin and Mahi Mahi. When we came back in for the weigh in I thought we might be in with a chance due to the weather being so bad. As it turns out only two other boats (out of twelve in the comp) had caught three of the target species, and we were the only ones to catch yellow-fin. It then came down to weight of the heaviest fish from each species for a combined weight of the three. We won the tournament by 1 and a half pounds. You bloody beauty. I celebrated back at home with another beer and some yellowfin sashimi straight off the fish.

Sundays Effort
Submitted by Blackknightz on Tue, 2010-03-30 11:31After reading that not enough are putting there catches up I thought I would have another go. Here is a couple that my partner and I got on Sunday. The conditions were perfect and in actual fact to good as when it glassed of the bite went off. We only fished for approx 2 1/2 hours and went home with that dhu that measured in at 84cm. Sambo was a bit of fun and he went back in for another day. My partner Tiff had a great run but lost it god knows what it was but it was big. So we hit the ramp at 10.15am and was home by 2pm with a nice dhu in the esky for easter got to be happy with that. Seen heaps of bait around nothing smashing through them but some of the balls were very tightly packed so maybe there was something under them, didn't bother to troll anything by them maybe next time.
