Basic questions about Hilarys
Submitted by Grumpysmurf on Fri, 2013-07-19 13:54So it's the mother-in-law's birthday on Sunday, so that means lunch out with the family. We are going to Hippo Creek at Hilarys.
To get my boating fix, I'm thinking of launching there and drive the boat to the restaurant side. Then after lunch, meybe a squidding session just outside the marina or even herring with the kids. So a few questions for those who knows the area well:
- Is there facility to tie up the boat next to ther restaurants?
- Is there any squid (weed bed) area just outside the marina? I don't want to go out far due to the weather forecast
- Any tips on where to get some bread and butter herring or whiting?

deck wash pick up
Submitted by Gav475 on Wed, 2013-07-17 14:30Thinking of putting a deck wash in the geneses. It has to be an external transom mounted pick up and Im not sure what it will look like. Don't want hoses and crap hanging out the back of the boat. Does anyone have a picture of a similar set up so I can have a look before I take the plunge.

VHF Radio MMSI numbers
Submitted by Mike17 on Mon, 2013-07-15 17:14Hey just wonderig if anyone else has gone to the trouble of getting an MMSI number for the VHF radio system?
It seems like a really good idea and i heard Rckingham Sea rescue will be monitoring it in the near future.
For those that don't know if you have a compatable radio, like the Lowrance Link 5 connected to your gps you can send out a pre progammed distress call at the touch of one button which will keep on repeating untill it's recieved and also transmit gour GPS coordinates automatically.
It's a bit of trouble but seems worth it.

How bad a sin is it really?? Drive on/off
Submitted by Grumpysmurf on Mon, 2013-07-15 16:47I often launch the boat myself or with my 2 kids. Oldest is 13, so she can't drive either boat or car. My trailer's rollers are new and so the boat rolls off as soon as the winch is released.
What I do is;
- Reverse in
- Unhook safety chain
- Climb on the boat and start up motor. Put into forward gear
- Lean out of boat to undo winch cable
- ease up on forward RPM and the boat would roll off the trailer
- tie up at jetty close by or beach the boat if no jetty.
- Park the car
Retrieve is the exact opposite of above. And either process takes me 4 to 8 minutes, assuming no major wind / current.
I believe this to be less time than a typical 2 blokes with the bow and stern rope, winching the boat all the way back/from the tail of the trailer type launch & retrieve. Most of their time seems to be spent walking up and down the wet trailer/ramp, straightening the boat, and time spent winching on or off.
Now I am seeing that some ramps says "No power launch / retrieve". And even other ramps which don't say that, I get evil looks from others.
So, how bad a sin is it really to drive on / drive off? I just can't imagine having to winch on / off single handedly within a reasonable time!

Dinghy repairer recommendations
Submitted by jdog1980 on Mon, 2013-07-15 14:36I have a 6 inch crack on the keel line of a stacer dinghy. As a boilermaker by trade in a previous life i know this is a 30 minute job max for someone that has a ali mig or tig. (problem is I dont have access to either otherwise I would do it myself) Can some one suggest a quality repairer they have used in the past that wont play games or charge like a wounded bull for a simple repair. The dinghy is mobile and can be delivered any where in the metro area but south is prefered.
Any advice or experiences will be appreciated.

Running two engels in a boat?
Submitted by Ian Macca on Mon, 2013-07-15 12:26Hi all,
Heading on a trip north soon and was wondering what is the best way to run two engels in the boat whilst driving?
I have dual batteries in the boat, but would it be better to run them from the car instead of flattening the boat batteries?
I have an Anderson pug on the car, can this be used to run the fridges?
Appreciate the help!

Fusion stereo issues
Submitted by Rig on Mon, 2013-07-15 11:21Hi guys
i have a fusion ma200 that I have opened for a couple of years and recently it has been playing up. It turns on and has all the featured but doesn't produce any sound for a while and then it kicks in and out for about half an hour then comes good.
i have noticed the screen gets foggy so it has obviously gotten some moisture inside of it. The unit is flush mounted in a runabout and only gets moisture exposure from bring outside ie not hosed or water spray like a centre console. Has anyone else had these issues with the fusion?

Submitted by Jayden20 on Wed, 2013-07-10 15:54gday fellas....got a project boat on the go at the moment ( 5.5 meter penguin phantom) and im going to be puting tanks in below the deck....its only got a 1.9 meter beam and will have 90 to 100 horses on the back so will have plenty of power and not alot of drag in the water undecided on 2 or 4 stroke yet but wich ever way I go it will be either new or late model second hand so will be pretty fuel efficient.......I can easily get 100 liters under the floor, would this be a safe amount or should I aim for 150??

First boat
Submitted by buddharock on Tue, 2013-07-09 22:20Hi All,
Have read through many threads and ready to ask for more specific advice related to my particular situation. My wife is not at all keen for me to purchase a boat, my first. However, I am super keen to invest for all sorts of reasons and will continue to look into this. Have a couple of boys (3 and 5) who love getting out on a boat. I head out wide on mate's boats (dhus, baldies etc) and close (whiting, flathead etc) when I can borrow an uncle's boat (crays last season too) and have used this over the last couple of years. I dive as well and free dive for crabs in the river, loving the whole 'hunter gatherer' thing as well as sporting aspect of it. I'm looking forward to setting out on my own, when conditions and finances allow, and getting my own tub.
So, main points.
1. Looking for a boat between $10 - $17k, ali or glass, possibly with cuddy for shade for the boys
2. Should I go dealer or private?
3. With the little guys, not able to do all day fishing all the time - compromise?
4. Hoping for min 4.75m max 6.5m due to driveway space.
5. Would love to take it to Rotto and depending on conditions.
Thoughts, advice, criticisms welcome.
Thanks

New Boat Ideas
Submitted by Riles on Wed, 2013-07-03 21:34G’day all
Happy Days!!!! The missus has been kind enough to donate $60000 towards a new boat, so therefore I’m chasing some ideas on boat makes and anything else that will help with this new purchase. The boat would have to trailerable and the main uses would include trolling at the FADS and bottom bouncing. I would also like if possible, be able to head over to the Mackerel Islands for our family holidays. I’ve been looking around for a while and have a few makes in mind but I’m still trying to decide on basic things like fibreglass or ally. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Australian Boater Panel
Submitted by Ambiance on Wed, 2013-07-03 20:02Reading the AFLOAT Online Magazine I cam across the following, looks like it may be a way of getting our point across, anyway have a look and let me know what you think.
http://www.australiaboatingsurvey.com
Benefits of Joining the Panel
You will be an important participant on the national boating panel that will contribute much needed information about boating activity. From analysis of the information, industry will be better informed to support and advocate for better boating services and facilities. Government will be in a better position to understand boater needs and therefore more effectively meet them.

Boat shade with 4WD awning

Has anyone had and experience with this or seen it done?

Trouble starting Mercruiser 4.3 MPI V6
Submitted by mrwinta on Sun, 2013-06-30 20:54Hi, I have been having trouble starting my 4.3 MPI Mercruiser that is installed in my 2007 Trophy. I have had it in and out of the mechanics and they can't figure out what is wrong so I thought someone on here may have a suggestion...
50% of the time it starts fine regardless of whether it is hot or cold but the other 50% of the time it just cranks over and over until I pump the throttle... The mechanics thought it maybe the IAC valve so we tried another one- still the same....
While cranking it over the voltage to the Lowrance GPS drops to a point where it just cuts out and has to be restarted. I thought maybe the batteries weren't up to the job so I replaced them with larger cells that are now 750 CCA that I charge after every trip just to be sure but still the problem persists.
I now leave the motor running all day rather than this rigmarole of having to restart the GPS after every drift so the hours are clocking up and I would like to sell the boat soon so I would really like to sort this out so as not to pass it on to the next owner....
All suggestions are very welcome.... Thanks in advance.....
Winta.....

Shaft drive trailer boats
Submitted by bradz on Sun, 2013-06-30 12:48What's the general thoughts on shaft drive trailer boats. Some in the states, such as Shamrocks, seem like a nice option. Centre mounted engine would give great weight distribution. And the shaft rive would require minimal maintenance.
At only 21 feet long they look nice. Pretty shallow v at the transom though

Boat flooring - timber look
Submitted by bradz on Fri, 2013-06-28 09:43Hi guys
Apart from teak, which is too heavy and expensive, can you suggest a flooring for a 6.5m trailer boat that gives a similar timber look?
There are some cork based products that seem OK but are also pretty expensive.
Cheers

advice on transducer placement for trailcraft (pics)
Submitted by spanishmackeral on Wed, 2013-06-26 21:21hey all,
after some help on placing my transducer better. currently it reads sweet from still up to 6 knots, over that and it has significantly less performance, rarely showing fish and hard to distinguish ground type.
few pics of its current spot

above picture on a slight angle, right side of tansducer is actually in line with the left side of the strake to its right

transducer is currently 360mm from the motor. My assumption is it is recieving turbulance from the strake to the right of it and possibly some from the live bait tank pump.
The two options i see are to:
1. move transducer 40mm to the left (making it 320mm from the motor) aligning it in the center of the two stakes it is currently in between
2. attatch a piece of flat aluminium sticking out to the right of mount already on the hull to allow the transducer to line up in the center of the strakes to its right (without me having to drill into the hull) making it 540mm from the motor, is this too far?
option 2 would require me to remove the bait tank pump but option 1 doesnt, will there be less turbulance if i remove it? (if it needs to be removed i will just sit it on the transom and throw it in the water when required, so no biggie if it stays or not.
also the cable for the transducer is run to the front of the boat with all the rest of the wires, steering and throttle controls. will i get less interferance/clutter if i run it seperately (how far away from the other cables will it need to be?) or has anyone tried putting corry conduit over the cable for any success?
all feedback will be much appreciated
cheers rob
the tranny has been moved to the center of the 2 strakes and the middle line of the transducer is now in line with the hull and the transducer sits level horizontaly.

there were also a few deep scratches on the hull where the transucer now sits which have been cleaned, patched and sanded smooth

Reef Anchor - Advice
Submitted by Lavs on Mon, 2013-06-24 18:19Hi all,
I have bought myself a reef anchor. Wondering if anyone has an easy way to bend the prongs out. Unfortunately I don't have a bench vice anymore which would have been easy enough.
Seems like it'll be a pain in the ass to store on the boat... given its shape and size.
Ive never used one either, any general advice?
Thanks in advance...
