New Boat Ideas
Submitted by Riles on Wed, 2013-07-03 21:34G’day all
Happy Days!!!! The missus has been kind enough to donate $60000 towards a new boat, so therefore I’m chasing some ideas on boat makes and anything else that will help with this new purchase. The boat would have to trailerable and the main uses would include trolling at the FADS and bottom bouncing. I would also like if possible, be able to head over to the Mackerel Islands for our family holidays. I’ve been looking around for a while and have a few makes in mind but I’m still trying to decide on basic things like fibreglass or ally. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Australian Boater Panel
Submitted by Ambiance on Wed, 2013-07-03 20:02Reading the AFLOAT Online Magazine I cam across the following, looks like it may be a way of getting our point across, anyway have a look and let me know what you think.
http://www.australiaboatingsurvey.com
Benefits of Joining the Panel
You will be an important participant on the national boating panel that will contribute much needed information about boating activity. From analysis of the information, industry will be better informed to support and advocate for better boating services and facilities. Government will be in a better position to understand boater needs and therefore more effectively meet them.

Boat shade with 4WD awning
Submitted by Mike17 on Mon, 2013-07-01 05:56Hey
I'm thinking of using a couple of the 4WD style roll up awnings for shade on a centre console.
Has anyone had and experience with this or seen it done?

Trouble starting Mercruiser 4.3 MPI V6
Submitted by mrwinta on Sun, 2013-06-30 20:54Hi, I have been having trouble starting my 4.3 MPI Mercruiser that is installed in my 2007 Trophy. I have had it in and out of the mechanics and they can't figure out what is wrong so I thought someone on here may have a suggestion...
50% of the time it starts fine regardless of whether it is hot or cold but the other 50% of the time it just cranks over and over until I pump the throttle... The mechanics thought it maybe the IAC valve so we tried another one- still the same....
While cranking it over the voltage to the Lowrance GPS drops to a point where it just cuts out and has to be restarted. I thought maybe the batteries weren't up to the job so I replaced them with larger cells that are now 750 CCA that I charge after every trip just to be sure but still the problem persists.
I now leave the motor running all day rather than this rigmarole of having to restart the GPS after every drift so the hours are clocking up and I would like to sell the boat soon so I would really like to sort this out so as not to pass it on to the next owner....
All suggestions are very welcome.... Thanks in advance.....
Winta.....

Shaft drive trailer boats
Submitted by bradz on Sun, 2013-06-30 12:48What's the general thoughts on shaft drive trailer boats. Some in the states, such as Shamrocks, seem like a nice option. Centre mounted engine would give great weight distribution. And the shaft rive would require minimal maintenance.
At only 21 feet long they look nice. Pretty shallow v at the transom though

Boat flooring - timber look
Submitted by bradz on Fri, 2013-06-28 09:43Hi guys
Apart from teak, which is too heavy and expensive, can you suggest a flooring for a 6.5m trailer boat that gives a similar timber look?
There are some cork based products that seem OK but are also pretty expensive.

advice on transducer placement for trailcraft (pics)
Submitted by spanishmackeral on Wed, 2013-06-26 21:21hey all,
after some help on placing my transducer better. currently it reads sweet from still up to 6 knots, over that and it has significantly less performance, rarely showing fish and hard to distinguish ground type.
few pics of its current spot
above picture on a slight angle, right side of tansducer is actually in line with the left side of the strake to its right
transducer is currently 360mm from the motor. My assumption is it is recieving turbulance from the strake to the right of it and possibly some from the live bait tank pump.
The two options i see are to:
1. move transducer 40mm to the left (making it 320mm from the motor) aligning it in the center of the two stakes it is currently in between
2. attatch a piece of flat aluminium sticking out to the right of mount already on the hull to allow the transducer to line up in the center of the strakes to its right (without me having to drill into the hull) making it 540mm from the motor, is this too far?
option 2 would require me to remove the bait tank pump but option 1 doesnt, will there be less turbulance if i remove it? (if it needs to be removed i will just sit it on the transom and throw it in the water when required, so no biggie if it stays or not.
also the cable for the transducer is run to the front of the boat with all the rest of the wires, steering and throttle controls. will i get less interferance/clutter if i run it seperately (how far away from the other cables will it need to be?) or has anyone tried putting corry conduit over the cable for any success?
all feedback will be much appreciated
cheers rob
the tranny has been moved to the center of the 2 strakes and the middle line of the transducer is now in line with the hull and the transducer sits level horizontaly.
there were also a few deep scratches on the hull where the transucer now sits which have been cleaned, patched and sanded smooth

Reef Anchor - Advice
Submitted by Lavs on Mon, 2013-06-24 18:19Hi all,
I have bought myself a reef anchor. Wondering if anyone has an easy way to bend the prongs out. Unfortunately I don't have a bench vice anymore which would have been easy enough.
Seems like it'll be a pain in the ass to store on the boat... given its shape and size.
Ive never used one either, any general advice?
Thanks in advance...

Trailer in storage, what to use to protect brakes from rust ?
Submitted by Dan on Tue, 2013-06-18 11:21we don't use our boat trailer very much as our boat is on the racks at Freo - so only for trips to Exxy.
Means the trailer is sitting around for long periods not being used. It's fine to spray steel parts etc of suspension etc with fish oil for rust protection; but does anyone have suggestions for what to treat brakes (disk rotors) with to protect them from rust ?

Buying 2nd hand - Older hulls
Submitted by Francis on Mon, 2013-06-17 14:50Hi guys,
I have been waiting for tax time for a while now - it's finally going to be time for me to upgrade my 4mtr tinny to a bigger rig to get out a little deeper.I've been waiting for this moment for about a year now and in that time the type of boat (and budget) I have been looking for has changed many times.
- Originally I was looking for something like a 6mtr+ cruisecraft / haines
- Then I figured I could go a little cheaper and get roughly the same thing with a trophy / key west
- And now I feel I can cut my budget even more and get an older hull with a new(ish) motor like a baron / fraser.
My price range is going to be around 15-20k and I'm looking for something in the 5-6mtr range. There are a few minor things that I am keeping an eye out for like access to the anchor, lots of deck space, preffering an outboard over an inboard, looking for nice wide gunnels with padding etc The main aim is to be able to head anywhere from 2 - 20 mile out on a reasonably good day (or even further weather and experience permitting).
I've kept my eye on gum tree for fraser/baron's/penguins and there have been some real gem's come and go amongst a lot of crap... so I'm going to have to be patient. But just keen to hear if anyone can recommend some other similar hulls in the price range ? Any info is good info... especially if you've had good / bad experiences purchasing a similar tub.
My first concerns would be the structural stringers in an older hull, the flooring/fibreglass work and hydrolic steering.
For some reason I am trying to avoid inboards... but I'm not actually sure why. Are they any more / less painful than an outboard ? I think the main reason I have been avoiding them is because they take up valuable deck space.
Cheers !

1CDN 010 - towing boat last night from North on the Indian Ocean Drive
Submitted by Grumpysmurf on Mon, 2013-06-17 11:55Was that any of you?
Well the boat trailer had no lights at all and it was pitch dark. I tried to flash my lights as well as raise you on the UHF (ch 40).
And then after overtaking you, and being overtaken by a BMW going at warp speed, I narrowly missed the 2 roos crossing the road. It could have turned really ugly if the had jumped in front of the BMW, as then it would have caused a 4 car pile up.
If that was any of you, I just wanted to come here to explain why I braked suddenly in front of you, and to remind everyone to check your trailer lights and turn on your UHF when travelling.

De Carbonising Two Stroke Evinrude 1997 Motor
Submitted by Ambiance on Sun, 2013-06-16 21:38Hi All
I have not been able to find anything on an Australian Site in reference to decarbonising a Two Stroke Motor. So question is.
1. Do any of you do it?
2. If so how?
The general idea seems to be to remove the spark plugs and spray something in, or do you put an additive into the fuel.
Cheers

Boat newbie
Submitted by Peo on Wed, 2013-06-12 22:21Hi all,
This is my first post, been a long time reader but thought I'd sign up and join in the community (and banter!)
So, a little about me. Come over from the motherland and been here in Perth ever since, but after 2 years living here and getting into the land based fishing scene, I (not the mrs!) want to buy my first boat. The thing is I don't really know where to start on the whole boat front. I know what I roughly want in terms of size and type and how much I want to spend, but was just looking for some overall newbie basic boating advice from any of you experienced salty sea dogs!
I'm looking for things a first time buyer should/shouldn't do, and what to look out for on a second hand boat, trailer and engine/outboard, plus any experiences you guys have had along your boating years. Am I right in saying the only paperwork/licences I have to get is my skippers ticket, transfer of owner papers, and then re register the boat and trailer in my name?
My budget is pretty low as the mrs isn't so keen on the idea just yet and doesn't want to give me too much of her wedding fund away to it! But I reckon a summer on the water this year will change her tune. I've got $5-7,500 as my budget and would like something with a cuddy cab that I could go to rottnest in. Is my budget a little low for something like that?
Any and all feedback is appreciated. Look forward to hearing from you guys.
Peo

Submitted by Muppet on Wed, 2013-06-12 16:41Does anyone know where to buy black hull liner off the roll.
I have searched whitworths, Bias and google but can only come up with light shades of grey or tan.
Cant use marine carpet as it has to go around tight corners. Have had some alloy shelves made up to fit under the hardtop.
