Changing Oil Types

I am looking to change to Fully Synthetic Oil, do I need to empty the existing oil from the tank or can I just let it get low and then fill it up with the New Synthetic.

Thanks in Advance

New Suzuki 140

Hi just wondering if anyone can recomd a Suzuki dealer in Perth looking to trade motor and buy a suzuki

would you buy a 1999 75 hp mercury?

gday was after opinions on a 75 hp 1999 hp mercury.

About to replace my trailer's wobble rollers

I have ordered new rollers and stainless split pins and is about to tackle the job this weekend. Am looking for other tips and tricks whilst I'm, doing this.

I will be doing this at the local ramp as it is very quiet there and only 900m from home. And I don't have tyres or suitable lawn to drop the boat off the trailer.

I have all new 28 rollers and new stainless split pins. Not the washers as I reckon I could re-use the old ones.

Questions are;

1. Should I hit the pins and washers with a wire wheel? If so, how hard? Just remove surface stuff or try to get it to shine?

2. Should I grease the pins? With Marine grease?

3. Should I spray cold gal on the pins?

4. Some surface rust on the frame as pictured. Should I just spray cold gal on them? Or INOX? or do they need more attention?

5. The axles and springs have heavy rust on them. Is there anything I should do? Should I smear them with grease, or just INOX, or just leave them be?

Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Magic Erasers

Anyone looking for a piss easy way to clean fibreglass boats give magic erasers a go. Awesome!

Trailer rebuilds etc-pics added

Its been the elephant in the room so to speak as regards my trailer, in that with the ADR's requiring a 120% capacity with non load sharing suspension, i couldnt get my trailer over the line for more than 2000kg rating.

The frame is in really good nick, so Ive been gathering up the bits to address this for a while, scored used Kodiak SS disc/calipers and Dexter unit.

I attacked the frames a couple of weeks back and sent them off for galvanising.

Setting up the brake flanges in the correct position and welding them on

Having got them back its all assembled into a rolling subframe.

Off to Melbourne tonite for a couple of days and when i get back I'll drop the boat in the water, remove the old suspension and slide this under, u bolts, drop on the Dexter EOH unit and relicence it at 3000kg.

note-if you intend to give me a lecture, then dont bother commenting. If you want more detail then feel free to ask! Constructive comments more than welcome though

Determine service life of manifolds and risers

Hi All,

I was recently on a trip to the Abrolhos and my engine over heated.  Turned out is was due to blocked water passages in the risers.  I took them off and soaked in acid which cleared the blockage but also removed a lot of flaky material as well.  Through my research it seems that the manifolds and risers are pretty much consumable and fail with relatively little warning signs resulting in major engine damage.  AS a result I am almost to the point of replacing the manifolds and risers with these (http://www.hitekmarine.com.au/).  However, before I bite the bullet I thought I would ask if anyone one here knows if there is a more “scientific” approach to determine if the manifolds and risers really need replacing.  For info the engine in questions is a Mercruiser 5.0L MPI with dry joint exhausts

Cheers

Toby

Haines hunter 8m patriot

Hi all,

I just got my hands on a haines hunter patriot 8m with twin 2007 model honda 225's

Is there anyone on the board with experience with this model of boat and engines... I am interested to know a bit more about the props your running and the rpm/knots/fuel use your getting.

Thanks for your time

Need ideas for short boaties

So I just bought a Haines Signature 610, but being less than 5' 3", I am having to stand on tiptoe to look over the windscreen.  A weekend on the boat standing on tiptoes have gotten me very sore toes

I reckon I need something about 4 inches high and soft, yet firm to stand on.  The admiral would probably need 5 inches.

I need ideas (none overly costly ones).  Ideally the idea would have a practical use as well (like a box that is strong/shaped right that can double as a tool box).

Any ideas apprciated!  I will try and post a picture of the area later.

Etec or OMC lifting eye

I need to take my 150HP Etec of my boat to repair the transom. Does any one have a lifting eye I can buy/rent/borrow? The part no for it is 342672. Or is it possible to do it without a lifting eye?? Thanks in advance.

Help please- Yamaha 4 stroke water separator alarm

Hello all, wondering if someone can help? The water separator warning alarm sounded when my boat was in neutral yesterday, only on the last start up of the day. Obviously a major concern especially since the boat was only serviced 15 hours ago. I have checked the separator on the motor and it is empty ( no sign of water), does anyone have a view? Could it be a fault? Can it be rectified without taking the boat to the shop? It didn't sound when I flushed the motor at home. Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Bullet Boats Reviews/Info

Has anybody got one or trialed one.

Looking at the 4.5m colt centre console.

I am new to boating and have been looking around at the dealerships but nothing has taken my fancy until now.

I just want to get out in Warnbro and Cockburn Sounds as I live in Rockingham. (not too adventerous at the moment)

The reverse chines look like it will be very stable at rest especially with a young family and the 4mm plate should take a bashing.

I have searched the web and only found info on the Bullet welding website with little info anywhere else.

Any comments/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Steve.

Tractor launching at Lancelin

Hi All,

A mate and I are thinking of heading to Lancelin for a weekend with his 23ft fibergalss boat.  Unfortunately, neither of us is confident to beach launch his boat.  I have seen a tractor launching bigger boats on previous trips up there.  Does anyone know if the tractor launch is a business (i.e. can get the bloke to launch and retrieve the boat) and, if so, what his contact details are?

Cheers

Toby

Towing 3t boat to exmouth??

Hi guys I am having a bit of a dilema at the moment.

We are set to leave in 4 week to exmouth for 10 days with a few friends

I have a 2352 trophy that I would like to take to exmouth without any fuel she sits at just under 3t

problem is that my hilux although i feel is more than capable of doing this is actually illegal to tow this sort of weight.

any suggestions on what can be done?

The landcruisers from hire companys that I have called only have 2t towbars which kill that idea

Engineering the Hilux to increase towing capacity could be upwards of 3 grand?

Getting it trucked up there and back?

Hiring a boat up there?

Stessfree NG Midi (freefall) install

Just thought I'd share a few pics of my recent anchor winch install. Have used it a few times now and it has been working a treat, and has led to an increase of fish being taken home. It's fitted to a 2008 Cruise Craft 625 Explorer so if your thinking of fitting this winch to this type of vessel or similar these pics may assist or alternatively you can contact me via PM and I'm happy to share my knowledge on some of the pitfalls I encountered etc....

As with anything like this there were a few hiccups along the way and I have added a few comments to the pics to show what they were. I spent a fair amount of time tossing up which winch to go with but in the end decided on this one and am happy with my decision. Though I did opt for the Micks winch roller as the video on youtube was rather convincing and so far it also has been a good choice. Probably one of the deciding factors was a local agent in the event of any warranty issues so it was purchased from JPW Marine in Welshpool and they (Ted I think) happily matched the best price I could find (ebay $2249) so that was a bonus.

I also installed the #3 Sarca & W3-4A bowsprit roller. I'd originally bought a W3-4A bowsprit second hand from ebay for $220 posted but then had issues with the new SARCA #3 not fitting it correctly. I rang anchorright and sent pics via email to ask what that was about and found out there had been a design change so the old bowsprit no longer fitted the new designed #3 anchor. (Spewing) But how stoked was I when Rex & Joy (owners) whom I was dealing with organized (while they were traveling thru NT) to send me a new bowsprit at the same price i.e. $220 posted (approx $200 off retail) could not have been happier with their customer service. The anchor & bowsprit have been fantastic with both it's holding ability and that it houses correctly each time it's raised.

I ran the new #3 anchor on the original cruise craft fitted roller over the waiting period of the new one arriving and had no end of trouble having it align correctly (housing upside down) - no issues now. A couple of other points to note are that winch came with 110m of 8mm nylon & 8m x 8mm short link chain. Now I know the website states only 90m of rope + chain will fit on the drum etc.. but of course I (as it turned out foolishly) hoped to use the whole 110m which didn't work as the chain kept jamming against the back plate. So I took 10m off (approx 1 layer of rope) and that now gives me 100m of rope on the winch (important as I dive in 35m occasionally). On a couple of occasions it has jammed but I have just run it out a couple of times and she has housed each time. Worth considering this before you think like I did that 110m will fit as it was bit of a bugger doing the splice insitu only to find I had to run it off cut 10m then redo it. The rope was factory spliced with a rubber protective sleeve to the chain so I didn't want to cut that end.  For the infill for the bowsprit I used an old 10mm cutting board (doubled up) which I rasp filed to fill the gap that was to be under the new bowsprit & sealed it with sikaflex. Re the rust the was under the now removed crucifix and old bowsprit I used Ranex to clean that up and it did a good job.

If your wondering what it cost here's the breakdown to help you consider if your contemplating something similar Winch $2249 JPW Marine (rope & chain included) Wiring loom $354 JPW Marine Backing plate $108 JPW Marine (you could use 5mm checker plate to save on this cost) Mick's Winch roller $85 Ebay Sarca anchor #3 $329 Bias Boating Swivel $25 Bias Boating Bowsprit W3-4A $440 Anchorright usually $399 though it could have been worse i.e.$620, thanks anchorright see above) Additional 316 s/s bolts $40 Boating Hardware Cleats x 2 $30 Boating hardware (needed to replace the removed crucifix) Sundries $40 (sikaflex, electrical conduit etc...) Boating hardware / Autopro Fitting $free (Thanks Robbo for the electrical help and the wiring/fittings for freefall) Total $3700

Winterizing

Hey guys still relatively new to boating, had a search through the forums and couldn't find too much info so apologies if this has been asked before.

As the winter draws in I'm using the boat less and less and wondering if there's anything I should do to keep my 2 stroke in good condition during long periods of not being used. A lot of the yank sites say you should winterize but seems like they do this for the whole winter, I plan on getting occasional use on a good weekend. Main issues I can think of would be fuel gumming up in lines etc. would just starting her up every 2 weeks be sufficient to keep things from seizing? Motor is a 1997 force 90hp.

Also one other question how long is fuel good for, haven't been able to get out in 6 weeks :-( so would it be alright to run this fuel still?

Cheers

Coraline Boat

I am about ready to sell my Quintrex Bay Hunter 4.75 with a 40 Merc, and up trade to a Coraline 555, I was interested to get some feed back on the Coraline. I normally fish out of Cervantes sticking to the inside of the second reef, but would really like to go out further, so I was thinking 80 Yamaha 4-stroke on the back of the Coraline 555 should do it. Just after any comments from fellow fishers, thanks.

Thanks in advance.

Project boat 'complete'

Well, as all of you with boats will know....you're never fully done kitting out your boat, but I'm calling the main part of my boat project complete. Now let the tinkering and refining begin.

I've posted a few pics of the final stages of the rebuild below and some before and after comparisons...check out links to previous posts below for earlier photos.

http://fishwrecked.com/forum/project-boat-update

Took it out today for its maiden voyage. Just a quick squirt on the Swan out of Maylands to see if the thing actually floats and moves. Couldn't have gone better, boat and motor performed flawlessly. Can't wait to open my fish account on it now. Think a bit of squidding in the sound over the winter will be the go while I learn my way around it and do some fine tuning.

Big thanks to all on this forum who provided encouragement and advice.

New Outboard purchased

Decided that enough was enough and went out and purchased a brand spanking new 90hp yamaha 2 stroke, today

I had been looking for a well priced second hand outboard and trying to find something was pretty fucken hard,

very slim pickings.

Anyhow as I was on a budget the choice was either a Tohatsu or a Yamaha, I have had both these engines on previous

boats and been more then happy. Went for a 2 stroke as the engine is going on an old Pacemaker Hull and really did not want

to spend too much on the repower.

Anyhow, purchased from Seaport Marine in Kelmscott and have to say Mike was very informative and straight forward to deal with.

Yamaha finance is what pushed me over the edge along with fixed servicing costs. Put $5k down with just over $5k

over 5 years with a three year warranty made it an eeeeeaaaasy decision.

My current boat may be for sale so if anyone is after a german made Baltic 4.65 open fibreglass dinghy with a 30hp Tohatsu, epirb

and safety gear included let me know. Great fishing boat that is pretty versatile. Tows well, can run around all day at 20knts and only use

half a tank of fuel. If interested PM me.
