Boating Weather Advice
Submitted by Tradewind on Mon, 2013-08-19 22:42I took the 18ft Thunderbird out for the maiden voyage around the sound on Sunday and she handled well but there wasn't a lot of challenging water.
I'm fairly cautious but in my mind what I really want to target is bottom fish 20 - 40m for Dhuies etc
What i'm concerned about is tackling rough water. I've read you need to take the waves at a 45 degree angle and tack if it gets too high for your boat, but reading about that means absolutely nothing compared to experience.
So a few questions just to give me some idea:
If you have to come back in rough weather would you still try planing but at the 45 degree angle to the wave or keep a quick pace while still in the water. I've always feared that planing while doing that could send the boat over while coming down the crest.
Secondly with a heavier glass boat around 18ft if you were looking to head out 10kms - 15kms what is the worst forecast you're consider going out in? 1.5m swell + ~10 knots or is that a bit too reserved?
Thanks for any advice, i'd prefer to be cautious and ask questions while new to skippering than being an asshat who tips his boat due to ignorance endangering lives.

Looking for something with a 10 or 12 inch screen and liked the garmin the most. I don't need it for the sonar and all the rest just maps. Anyone had any issues with them or can suggest something else maybe?

Aluminium Transom Corrosion - Repair Advice
Submitted by craig_johns469 on Mon, 2013-08-19 14:29Hi Everyone
I'm hoping to get some advice on the extent of the corrosion found on my Savage Cobia's transom.
While replacing my PTT unit recently, which required removal of my outboard (to separate the bracket), I decided to replace the ply transom pad with a nylon type.
Turns out the ply pad was only riveted on without any additional sealant and has caused corrosion to the outside of the transom. After hitting it with a bristle wire brush attachment on the grinder, it turns out there is one resulting hole about the size of a pea, as well as some pitting which appears to be up to 1-1.5mm deep in places, but nothing of grave concern, I hope!.
I've recently had the anodes replaced on motor and bracket, and yesterday found a few lead sinkers under the floor but don't believe they have been there for long. I did also find a brass swivel which will have been there for longer than I have owned the boat (16 months) as I don't believe I or anyone else uses brass swivels. I don't use a battery isolator which I've found out I should so will look to get that sorted out pronto.
I've attached some pics of the transom, showing outside, upper inside, and lower inside (to show either side of the engine mounting holes). I'm hoping that cleaning it up a bit further, drilling out the rivet and corrosion holes, weld them up and weld an additional 4mm plate over the top will be all that is required, but unsure whether any of the existing ali should be cut out out first? Will the corrosion continue if I ensure that the battery is regularly isolated, and all dissimilar metals in contact are duralac'd?
I've had a fabrication place (not boat specific) carry out some re-welding on some cracked welds (and other non-boat things) at a very reasonable price and did an excellent job, so was considering going back there but happy to look at other options, companies etc.
The plan is to keep this boat for as long as I foresee as it's my baby and does everything that I want it to and takes me where I want to be.
Look forward to hearing thought/opinions. Thanks in advance!
Cheers
Craig

Seamaster M70 Battery Question
Submitted by Tradewind on Thu, 2013-08-15 19:03Evening,
I've been trying to get some information on these batterys. (Seamaster M70 - not the gold edition)
My boat came with two and i've tried to find information on them but I can only find specs
First question - Are they a true Calcium batteries and when recharging do you select Calcium on the intelligent battery chargers
Second question - They have what looks like screw plugs on the top, but if they are calcium do i need to remove the plugs and top up with distilled water, or are they maint free on these models
Thanks for any replies, ive searched and searched without finding the info I need

Help identifying fuel connection
Submitted by Tradewind on Tue, 2013-08-13 21:32I've got a 1978 Johnson 115Hp which needed a fuel line.
I bought from BCF the Johnson/Evinrude fuel line. The connector secures onto the fuel tank but not onto the outboard.
I've taken a closer look at the connections. The connection on the tank and the outboard are different
I feel fairly foolish but it's my first week working with a boat or outboard.
I've taken a few snaps of the connections if someone can identify the correct connector for me so i can adjust the fuel line with the correct one.

Advice on an old Chivers Thunderbird
Submitted by Tradewind on Thu, 2013-08-08 22:16Hey all,
Looking to buy my first boat and i've seen a few of the mid 70's Thunderbirds around these days for a very decent price.
My concern of course is the structural & outboard integrity because a cheap boat can become a money pit instantly.
I've heard the chivers thunderbirds are a great offshore boat for all sorts of conditions even if the old ones wont be winning any beauty awards.
My question is:
Buying a fibreglass hull that old are they quality enough to be reliable still?
Secondly i'd still want to check the Hull & Outboard, can someone recommend a good priced marine tech who can do this before you buy one?
Appreciate any assistance

Submitted by grandadbazza on Sat, 2013-08-03 07:52This is my new boat a Chivers 190SF with a 150hp Yamaha.
Very pleased with the boat. have had it out in winds a bit over 30 knots and it handled it beautifully.
I must say when I was looking at which boat to buy CCC's write ups on his then 190 centre console certainly influenced my decicion to purchase the Chivers.
Had it 2 weeks and the first service (20 hours) is already due.

Skids or rollers??
Submitted by Troy Summers on Tue, 2013-07-30 20:43Got a mate that recently bought a 28ft Sea ray, it came on a trailer but isnt rated at the weight of the boat, bout 3.5t.. he can get it worked on or buy another, both being about the same amount of money, he has rollers on the current trailer and the other has skids.... what would be better, Every larger boat I see seems to be on skids, including the trailer the storage uses to launch his boat... but Im also figuring they can put it in way deeper than us norms would with a 4wd
Opinions??
Troy
PS doing a trailer upgrade for my Baron sportsman.. would this be relevant too

I-Command
Submitted by lawndered on Mon, 2013-07-29 19:03Hi All
For those who use the Etec I-command gauges a question on the fuel configuration. Since my tank is rectangular in shape the manual recommends calibrating on a two point basis. Empty and Full.
I was just wondering has anybody with a rectangular tank used the Five point calibration, I was thinking of doing this on mine as I hope it is more accurate. I know it sounds like it should be, but the guide says 2 points should be fine for a rectangular tank and 3 & 5 point calibration is for irregular tanks.
My system has been out for the past few trip so I have Syphoned the fuel so I can Calibrate, wanted to do the 5 Point calibration but thought I would ask and see what feedback other e-tec users give.
Thanks Brad

Battery connection to radio
Submitted by buddharock on Sun, 2013-07-28 17:35Hi guys, I have just put in a new 27mhz radio to my quintrex and have a few questions. There was an am/fm radio already installed so I did some adjusting and cutting to flush mount the two-way alongside of this. Now, there was power run to the old one through a connecter in the photo and being the same brand this, now works for the new one.
What I want to know is there a double adapter for this connection that I can add and power both radios rather than climbing under the dash and swapping the connection each time? I've done the runaround and checked auto stores, Bunnings and BCF with no luck, they seem to think it is specialised as it is waterproof/water resistant. I do have the cable to connect the new one to the battery but am a bit useless with electrics and thought that the double adapter way would be cheaper and easier than getting an auto or marine electrician to hook this up.
Thoughts/advice welcome.
Thanks

Coraline 525 Explorer
Submitted by Magic on Wed, 2013-07-24 09:44Hi All,
Looking to buy a boat around the 5m mark and one that I’ve seen recently is the Coraline 525 Explorer.
I'm looking for feedback from any owners of this boat on the way a boat handles and the way it feels on the water etc.
Thanks in advance.
LED lights
Submitted by Fraser 5.25 on Tue, 2013-07-23 19:52Been a while since I last posted on Fishwrecked but I have just had my floor replaced in the boat and decided to go crazy with LED lights. I don't mind getting out night fishing and thought I would improve on my lighting in my boat. I had LED lights under the gunnels already.
These are below the water line on the transom. They are that flexible LED strip stuck on a strip of aluminium covered in araldite. I have also stuck a few on the gunwhale rubber around sides as well. I have redone the port side since this photo and the tape was there to hold the flex conduit in place while the silicon was drying as I don't won't to drill in to the transom any more than I have to and silicon was the next solution. Since redoing the port side, the light strip is hard against the motor mounting plate to match the starboard side.

I bought a couple of 18Watt slim work lights for the targa bar to light up the bait board and beyond. I installed LED's under the gunnels a while ago and they're still going good apart from a few on the fritz.

I also bought a 9" light bar from Ebay for $90 and stuck it on the bow. Have to test out how good it is once the weather comes good. This is with the light bar off.

And light bar on.

The light bar on the bow draws 4 amps, the LED navigation lights draw 200 milliamps, the cabin lights draw 2.4 amps and the transom lights draw 700 milliamps. All up with the sounder, the cd player and the marine radio, the draw on the battery is 8 to 9 amps with the motor off.
