Lesson Learnt the hard way
Submitted by AaronC on Wed, 2013-10-16 10:48After talking with my mate a few weeks ago about the close calls i have had with bearings and hubs, i told him to get straight onto fixing his trailer up so he wont get caught out one day.
Well Sunday afternoon at 5pm on his way back from Mandurah on the freeway ..... BANG. Tyre and rims gone and this was the final result.
After 4 hours stuck on the side of the road and $600 tow from Thomas road exit to Madeley NOR. I Think he has learnt his lesson.
Funny when its not you!!!!!!

Transom repair
Submitted by mbusby on Tue, 2013-10-15 09:14So the project has started , I have finally bitten the bullet and decided to replace my transom prior to re powering , after much deliberation iv chosen to do what I can to save myself some money , The boat cost me two bottles of scotch and a bottle of gin , I spent $1200 last year on the trailer to get it licenced and in good working order, was quoted $4500 to replace transom , so far to get this done its cost me $1000 to remove transom and re fibreglass it, with an expected $200-$400 to gelcoat and paint (heres hoping ) so far its cost a lot more than what I purchased for but at the bargain price I got cant really complain.
Thought I would share a few pics and my experience here

ADVICE NEEDED FOR LONGBOAT ENGINE KIT OUT
Submitted by Mikado on Fri, 2013-10-11 08:17Hi guys. I have purchased my first new boat. It's a 6 metre longboat similar to the SouthWinds. I have these questions to ask as it is hull only and need to kit out with motor etc.
The transom is rated from 60hp-100hp (25 inch).I will put the biggest motor possible as I want to do this setup once and not regret anything in the future. The question I have is if I went for 100hp 4 stroke or 100hp 2stroke,well there is a difference of around 50kg between these 2 variants. I have asked the dealer if the specs for the transom are 2 or 4 stroke sizes/weights and he said it wouldn't matter as the boat can easily handle either.
The other question I have which I'm sure has come up a few times before is which engine to choose?
If I go the biggest possible which is 100hp or similar can those that have experienced both types of engines please give me feedback on brands as this will help me make my decision on brand/variant.
I'm liking the four strokes due to fuel economy but have heard the later 2 strokes are much better than the older models.
The boat will be used mainly in the Pilbira and would definitely need to be reliable.
Thnks in advance :-)

VHF16-and assistance calls
Submitted by Rob H on Wed, 2013-10-09 23:59Fishing out of Coral Bay, we dropped in on a VHF conversation between VMR and a boat with a flat battery.
There seemed noone else to assist so we cut a little short our fishing and headed in 10 miles to assist.
The boat was in quite an awkward spot, close inside the breakers, 5 meters up wind/current of a shallow bomby and a bit of breeze.
With 4 blokes holding boats apart and one watching for anchor dragging we rafted up hooked up leads and took 15 minutes to get enough boost to get started.
No problem, back at ramp at 1700. A carton was supplied despite our insisting it wasnt needed and the beer and cameraderie well savoured. No prob whatsoever there and its a good feeling to have helped, being a typically superstitous lifelong seafarer.
The irritatation? When we got there, another very modern boat was anchored less than 1km away who wasnt logged in and VHF "wasnt working".
The same day in Exmouth a bloke died and others pulled alive from the water.
If you dont feel you need to log in (as i hadnt on that particular day also) how would you feel if people drowned 1000m away while you sat anchored scratching your ass oblivious to their plight?
if your vessel is fitted with VHF, it is law that you monitor 16 at all times for this very reason.

Anyone use one of these, or something similar? Effective?

Advice needed - Boating Virgins
Submitted by reynolds9 on Sat, 2013-10-05 22:54Looking at buying our first boat, and as most never realised there were so many options. So any advice and do's and don'ts is greatly appreciated. Okay, some of the things we have decided on are:
Use: Mostly Fishing, cruising with the family (2 little one's) perhaps rotto trips, river runs
Budget - $25k due to financing dont really want anything too old
Size 5 - 5.5m (no storage space for any bigger)
Wifey likes the idea of cuddy cabin for the kids as its more shaded then say a bowrider. However it limits the deckspace?
Ali vs Fibre??
2 vs 4 stroke ??
Obviously looking for a smooth ride, economical and decent power.
Been looking at a Haines Traveler at Mandurah Boat Auctions but after reading some reviews not sure now...
So hit me with ur suggestions?
What are your must haves for a first boat?
Cheers

Breather/Vent line surge protectors
Submitted by sstevee on Sat, 2013-10-05 18:14Hi guys,
Just seeing if anyone out there has any type of surge protection fitted to their breather lines?
I have a quinnie bayhunter that's a pig to fill. Basically due to the position of the tank filler and the breather take offs when the tank gets close to full there is an air lock between the fill point and the breather lines. This obviously then causes fuel to come out the breathers if you try to fill any more.
I've tried being careful etc... But its still a pain in the ass.
So putting it out to any others to see if these little contraptions work. There are many varying opinions on the net. With some even saying that there's potential to have fuel come back out the filler, with force, in some circumstances.
Any opinions appreciated,
Steve

Glass or Acylic
Submitted by iana on Thu, 2013-10-03 16:41Went and got a quote for a new windscreen today. Toughened glass was $200 more to do the two front panels, and having the sides in acrylic. Any pit falls when getting glass? $200 is not much more, is it worth doing?

Good service mechanic SOR
Submitted by joel88 on Wed, 2013-10-02 09:42Hey Guys,
I know this has been asked quite a few times here but just chasing suggestions of a good boat mechanic for my annual service (South of the River).
Only bought the boat last year so this will be the first time I've had it serviced. It's a 2000ish 40hp mercury 2 stroke (about 320 hrs) and nothing wrong with it just want to make sure it'll get through another year of boating. The anode definetly needs replacing as it's pretty much gone but other than that I can't think of anything really. Would be great to get the whole boat and trailer inspected while it's there too (check grease in the trailer bearings etc).
Chivers marine is closest and they seemed really nice and helpful but their quote was a little over my budget so just hunting some less expensive options too before I go ahead with it.
Thanks

Port Hedland boat advice
Submitted by adamkaii on Tue, 2013-10-01 04:46Hey guys,
I am heading up to port to live and trying to figure out what is the best boat combo up there for the area. I currently have a Quintrex 420 wide body and 30 Suzuki 2 stroke and trying to figure out whether I should upgrade before heading there.
wanting to fish wherever my boat can take me and can see myself getting both an offshore rig and estuary rig in future as I do both style fishing here in qld ....but looking for advice on what single best rig would be best at moment....
this is my first post on this and looking forward to see what the west brings fishing wise. And any hints on port fishing wise will be appreciated and I will have spots free on boat when I get there if you able to help me out :)
cheers all..

Marine Radios
Submitted by Browndog on Mon, 2013-09-30 21:11So my old full size27MhZ GME GX290 radio has finally died (Volume on/off switch seized) so I need a replacement. Also looking to add an AM/FM radio so I can kick back and listen to the cricket while not catching fish.
Suggestions anyone?
Was thinking something like the GX300 (compact 27 Mhz), and perhaps something like a GR200 AM/FM radio that will also receive VHF. Open to suggestions, tried the GME webstite but it is crap!
Also suggestions on best place to purchase, local or online.
Cheers,
BD

beach launch ocean whaler 565
Submitted by craig scott on Fri, 2013-09-27 21:16Looking for comments from 565 owners that would/do launch from the beach. Equally keen to hear from anyone that thinks it's not such a good idea.
Is it a necessity to submerge the trailer or can the hull handle a bit of a drag?
Cheers Craig.

Anyone have small length of 38mm (1 1/2") fuel filler hose going spare
Submitted by tigerfish on Thu, 2013-09-26 19:08Need a short piece of 38mm (1.5") fuel hose to connect a fuel cap to a tank that I have bought. Not mounting the filler cap on the boat so just need enough to join the filler cap to the neck on the tank......think 15 to 20cm would be enough. I know whitworths sell it but min purchase is a metre so just thought I'd check if anyone has a small piece lying around (ideally NOR)?

Bait Board Mounting on Chivers Thunderbird
Submitted by Tradewind on Wed, 2013-09-18 12:42I've got the Outboard model of the Thunderbird with the Splashwell
I recently picked up a rod holder mounted baitboard and want to mount it so it's over the splashwell without causing issues to engine movement
Has anyone done this with a thunderbird with a splashwell?
Due to the distance between the legs I can't see a viable way to mount something like side rod holders.
Feedback and ideas are greatly appreciated
