Suggestions for new boat
Submitted by troya on Wed, 2013-05-01 23:32I am currently considering selling/trading my 5.5m plate ally Raider runabout and buying something with a fibreglass hull, mainly because i'd like something that will give a smoother ride. I've had a look around on the various boat sales websites and there seems to be so much out there that i don't know where to start so I'm hoping some of you fishwrecked members could help me out with some reconmendations on whats good and whats crap. The only criteria I have is:
$35000 to $40000 budget
prefered 4 stroke
5.5m-6.5m length
deck space for up to 4 fisherman
runabout, walkaround or centre console style (i don't really need anything with a cuddy cabin but I may still consider it)
big enough to take about 20 - 25 nm offshore
I want to stay dry when the wind picks up and the ocean gets a bit rough.
I'm really not that fussy, I just want to avoid buying a lemon so any ideas would be much appreciated. cheers

40HP Merc won't start after running dry at full-throttle
Submitted by xtian on Wed, 2013-05-01 09:39Hi All,
I've got a 40HP, 2-stroke, 3-cylinder, manual mix, pull start Merc (Tohatsu under the hood I'm told) on the back of a 5m centre console Brooker. It was fully-serviced less than two months ago and has run beautifully since then ... until last weekend.
I was heading back to Poddyshot ramp in Denmark with the throttle fully open when I ran a tank dry. Haven't had a problem swapping tanks before but this time the engine was fully-cranked.
After swapping, the first or second pull almost turned it over but after that ... nothing. Thought I may have flooded it but took a plug out and am pretty sure it was dry. After driving back to Perth and leaving for day it still won't turn over so I'm assuming I have a fuel problem. The bulb is primed and the tank valve open so is this a carby problem? Have I sucked air into somewhere I shouldn't have? Is it gunk (I did clean the tanks recently)?
I'm keen for any advice on things I can check before spending hundreds more after a recent service.
Cheers!

any advice on inflatable boats??
Submitted by scottbec on Tue, 2013-04-30 09:32Hi All,
I am just chasing some advice / thoughts in regards to inflatable boats.
We tow a caravan and also have a large kayak on the roof of the 4x4, so we are looking a the option of an inflatable as we cant take a roof topper tinny...
We have found a few big ones (up to 4.7m) which roll up into a nice big bag and were wondering how sea-worthy they are and if they are a practical option. Are they a hassle to pump up and is there really a risk of a stray hook sending us buzzing around the ocean as it deflates...
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Scott

Boat only goes forward
Submitted by bigmick on Tue, 2013-04-23 20:00Today my boat decided that it only wants to go forward, plus the prop spins when it's in neutral. When I put the throttle into reverse, it still just powers up and goes forward. This problem started after the mate that was at controls turned the ignition off when the throttle was still in the forward position not neutral. Any ideas please

Yamaha 115 hp fourstrokes
Submitted by Anthony Hall 87 on Tue, 2013-04-23 14:57Gents,
Considering selling my twin fourstrokes I bought back in 2011, they have only done 130 hours and are in mind condition. I think I over capitalised when I bought them for my tub and am thinking of seperately selling them and upgrading my boat.
Cant seem to find too much on the net in the way of newish second hand motors, I was thinking in the range of 25-28k. I paid 33500 new and they havent done too much work. Is this around the mark that I would get or am I dreaming as they said in the castle!! haha
Cheers,
Hally

Issues with 1993 Mercury 40hp 4cyl outboard
Submitted by wydra on Tue, 2013-04-23 07:38Hi guys,
I am helping my brother out with his newly acquired boat that has a few issues to sort out.
When he first got it compression was down on cylinder 3 so we tore the powerhead off, reboard the block, and put it all back together with new pistons and rings. Now compression across all cylinders is good.
We went to start it and it will start with a good slash of primer fuel but wont idle correctly. To keep the engine running correctly you need to give it a fair amount of throttle.
I pulled the carbies off, gave them a good clean out and inspection and all looks ok from them so we put them back on with the same issue.
I am starting to get to the point where I am scratching my head so I thought I would put my hand out to the good people of this forum.
The only things I can think which could be causing this issue is:
1. The carbies are still badly out of wack
2. the timing is badly off
3. The reed's might be knackered and need replacing.
Obviously I would prefer it to be something like a timing or carby issue so I don't have to pull the whole engine apart again to get to the reed blocks but I just need to know what is wrong.
The boat is located in Minyama (Sunshine coast).
Thanks Guys, Help!

My Topender has a Muir winch, well windlass, and it is a f#@&*n pain in the arse without any freespool on the drop, I don't know why anyone would fit this but it's there and thats that! I am going to remove it but have grown lazy and would like to replace it with something more usable, I'd like to hear of any smaller boats with winches and where to buy from!

Boston Whaler / Ocean Whaler
Submitted by Doooma on Mon, 2013-04-22 09:09Hi guys,
As may of you well know, I've been toying with the idea of getting rid of my Caribbean Reef Runner, and changing to a cat....
Question is...
How do the Ocean Whalers compare in the rough chop to a cat?
Would a whaler be a better all round option for up here in Carnarvon, and would it be capable of doing the 55kms roughly out to the islands or would you stick to the cat idea.. I was thinking of cats around 5.2m but the more I read about the whalers, on paper anyhow... they seem to be more than a capable vessel.... Is there enough room on the decks to roll out 2 swags?
I think it could do the job of the 2 boats I currently have... which means freeing up the room at home... It could do the job for the inshore stuff my 3.8m Whaler cat currently does... plus the offshore stuff.... maybe????
Is the 565 the largest size they make?? (or in equivalent other brands of similar whaler style boat)
Cheers

Project boat steering help
Submitted by tigerfish on Sat, 2013-04-20 21:06This forum has been a big help so far through my project boat rennovation and i'm hoping some of you might be able to give some help or direction with my current issue.
When i bought the boat it had a Hydrive hydraulic steering system that i planned to reuse with the new (used) outboard. However, when i removed the old outboard, i found that i could not remove the rod that goes through the steering/tilt tube of the outboard due to corrosion, and in any case, the threads on one end of it were bent. The steering system is the bull-horn type where the rod through the tilt tube is fixed, with a thread at either end that bolts onto the hydraulic ram. In addition to this, i also have no idea whether the system is fully working. It seemed to work okay before i removed the outboard but it is one of the older (possibly the original) Hydrive systems and there is a bit of oil seepage from some of the fittings.
At this stage i figure i have 3 options:-
Option 1 is a new hydraulic system. Costs for my rennovation have already blown out so this would really be a last resort.
Option 2 is a new, non-feedback cable steering system. I have read (somewhere) that 90hp (as my outboard is) is about the recommended limit for cable systems. Anyone have any experience with a cable system on this size outboard? And can anyone recommend somewhere to buy and/or fit one with an idea of cost?
Option 3 is to try replace the missing rod and get the current unit working again. I have sent an enquiry to Hydrive about the part. Failing that, does anyone know of someone/somewhere that could machine one for me at a reasonable cost. It is basically a 5/8 inch diameter stainless rod about 450mm long with an M12 thread at each end.
Help or advice is appreciated.

spray painter wanted
Submitted by JoRn on Sat, 2013-04-20 08:46hi all,
Had an incident with my boat yesterday. A combination of indecisiveness and early morning saw me scrap the paint off my gunwale - about 3 m long
I am looking at getting this fixed up plus a few other unsightly scratches on the boat.
Can anyone recommend anyone for a $$ jobbie..
Opinions on etecs??
Submitted by silly on Wed, 2013-04-17 11:15Looking at repowering my trailcraft with a 150hp pretty soon, was hoping to get a 4 stroke Suzuki, Honda or yammy but the costs is above my budget. The etec's would probaly be the next best option. Im liking the lowrr servicing coas and te power of a 2 stroke but What are they like reliablity wise?
How about fuel consumption?
are they really quieter than most 2 strokes?

Cruise Craft 575 - Explorer or Outsider
Submitted by AHarman on Wed, 2013-04-17 10:49Hey everyone,
thought I'd see people's opinions about the explorer (bigger fishing deck) vs. outsider. Do both retain walkaround (albeit a small foot well). Any info on people's experiences with these Rigs would be appreciated.
HH580 breeze is the only rig tempting me otherwise atm

New Canopy - Mel Taylor Marine Trimmers
Submitted by Dizzy on Mon, 2013-04-15 15:40I finally got around to getting my clears and rear shade done, but it revealed a few issues with the existing canopy.
the previous canopy was fitted by the popular canopy mob in Balcatta and had fit, stitching & water pooling issues right from the start.
I basically accepted it as being standard quality, as I'd seen some of their existing work at the popular Wangara boat shop, who originally recommended them to me.
......... until I paid a visit to Mel Taylor Marine Trimmers in Wangara.
A quick comparison of their work to what was already on my boat left me feeling very disappointed - especially considering the price I paid for the initial canopy work.
So after talking options over with Gary & Travis at MTT, I decided to get the whole thing redone to avoid issues with matching everything up to the existing top cover
An expensive option, but well worth it - and all I can say is WOW, what a difference.
The quality of work is so far above the original installation it's not funny.
The stitching is Tailor quality (excuse the pun) and everything fits like a glove.
If you're needing some canopy work done I highly recommend them
Apparently the popular Wangara boat shop is now also using them too.
Here's a new pic of the boat - with some added photoshopping to get rid of the trailer & original boring background. :P
(700mm rear shade not shown)
Visually, the top is higher than I'd normally like, but it can't be helped when I'm nearly 6'5"
The tub has really come a long way since I started the refurb and I'm pretty stoked with how it's turned out.
(20ft / 6.1m Chivers Eagle 2000)
I'd need to be spending some big $$$ on a Edencraft 6m or Bass Strait 6m Offshore to get a comparable boat.
The recent addition of trim tabs has refined the ride very nicely too.

SS prop damage where to get it sorted
Submitted by ross58 on Tue, 2013-04-02 21:05Hi guys,
Have a bit of prop damage thanks to a keen deckie and shallow unchartered rocks in Augusta.
Prop is bent on two blades and has gouges on the leading edges. Does not seem to be unbalanced as such but Ned's to be reset, leading edges smoothed and then rebalanced. Can anyone suggest where they would take it. Found a couple of sites in Perth but would prefer some references.
BTW it did not stop us catching Dues, black arse and the most amazing harlequin I Hev seen. Pics soon from the delinquent deckie!
