Problem with Johnson outboard
Submitted by harich4 on Wed, 2015-12-16 07:32I have a 115hp Johnson outboard 2 stroke that's has a problem.
The last few days I've started to have problems with my motor. been going out to check my pots and I can only cruise out at 8 knots any faster and the motor starts missing and struggling. Once I've pulled my pots I head back doing 25-30knots nothing is wrong with it.
Does anyone wants wrong with it?

wiring a winch
Submitted by roddo on Tue, 2015-12-15 20:24Hi all
Well i need to wire up a lewmar capstain winch to pull my pots. To save on wiring up a whole new breaker and wiring can i run it off the current anchor breaker with its own switch as i wont be using both winches at the same time so it wont be overloading it or should i not be a slack arse/tight arse and wire a new set in.
Cheers

Anti fatigue mat
Submitted by Willlo on Tue, 2015-12-08 17:01G day fellas well after having back surgery a couple of months ago and not being able to fish for a few months before that the time is getting close for me to venture out again. After going through major pain as you would understand i want to avoid as much pain as possible not fishing is not an option. I browsed the web and came across a few options from the states ie footcush and a few others but was wondering if there was anything local available specific to boats o don't want to cover the whole deck just the helm area. Any suggestions? I was thinking of cutting up an anti fatigue mat but they r quite heavy.
Cheers Willo

Heavy in the Rear
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sat, 2015-12-05 14:15Had my boat for almost three months now and I've always felt it was heavy in the arse and the outboard sat too close to the water level on the plain and need to trim in right in to stop it porposing when I hit a small swell or some chop.
Had a chat to my marine mech when I was getting something else done and he asked it it threw up spray when going at low speeds which is does so he's measured it and moved it up a bolt hole.
Waiting for a chance to get her in the water to try her out but do you think I can expect higher speeds now as well with less drag in the water? Would be nicer to get an extra knot or two sitting in the 4500rpm mark.

Boat/Motor ID Help + Insurance
Submitted by linoc on Sat, 2015-12-05 12:33Hey All
Need to organise Insurance, would also like some help with ID.
Most recent threads regarding Insurance appear to be more than 2yrs old, Club & SGIO seemed to be most suggested, things may have changed...
4x4's also due for renewal, was thinking maybe I could get a combined discount if any of them offer it with boats?
Was doing an online quote on Club, it asks details I don't know (I.e. "Hull make" , "When was your boat built?") thought you maybe able to help out before making a tool of myself via the phone? (compared to doing it here with u)
Boat is 4.4mtrs glass, Vin is AU-TWA038439AJ6 (see pic below) month & year/s don't reflect the example from DOT. Transport website was suggested to enter vin but all I can see is checking to see if any finance owing.
She's had a rough coat of paint at some point, Cruise Craft stickers put on the side, dosn't mean it is one.
Looked at heaps of Google Images and can't find anything similar with the rear moulded seating, perhaps it was an optional upgrade, later installed etc.
(Flash looking ali trailer under it is the work of site sponsor Todd at Epic Marine, generous FOC loaner while he custom makes mine)
Motor is a Yammy 55 CV, why they put ID stickers on the outside in the weather rather than protected under the cover ???
Not only for insurance but would like to get a manual.
Other thing while at it;
Anyone else had something like this? experiment with in-built tank placement/balance, hydrofoil etc. any tips/tricks?
Gotta redo all the dodgy wiring so while I'm at it....
Thanks for any help/advice...

electrical issue
Submitted by Gav475 on Wed, 2015-12-02 08:05I have 3 batteries one of which is brand new. I Had the 2 in the boat charging on the ctek charger with the colhursey to off. Ctek says bateries are fully charged but when starting sounds totally flat 1 or 2 very lazy half cranks then click click. Got the 3rd brand new battery out and hooked it up, same thing. Put all 3 on a different old school charger until all 3 showed fully charged. Hooked them all up again with exactly same result. Seems plenty of power to operate power trim ect. Motor is a 115 merc/ yammy 4 stroke. Any ideas before I pay for a mechanics retirement.

Tow hitch on bullbar
Submitted by Seafari on Tue, 2015-12-01 14:01I'd like to have a towball receiver fitted to the front of my Cruiser. The Cruiser is already fitted with a standard Toyota bar (see pic). It's merely for manouvering the boat trailer in some pretty tight storage space. The front hitch will not be used for launch/retrieve purposes.
The idea is to have the receiver under the front rego plate. The rego plate could be mounted on spring hinges allowing it to be folded up and out of the way to receive the hitch and when the hitch is not in use, the hole is covered by the rego plate, or something like that.
Any ideas, suggestions or anyone done something similar?

Portable fuel tank vs inbuilt
Submitted by Ashen on Tue, 2015-11-24 20:20Hi guys.
Would like to hear your thoughts and experiences on the pros and cons of portable vs inbuilt fuel tanks.
I used to go boating weekly but life is different now and can only go probably once a month. My boat has a 120 litre inbuilt tank sitting below the motor well. Due to the lack of use, I am considering changing to a couple of portable 25 litre tanks, because I would like to use fresh fuel everytime I go boating.
Have any of you changed from inbuilt to portable tanks, and were there any regrets etc?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: Yes, I realise I can just put in the amount of fuel I think I might need for the day into the 120 litre tank, but if I don't use it all, it'll sit there for weeks! Where as with portable tanks, I can always use the leftover fuel in the mower! Haha

Need a Trailer (Perth WA)
Submitted by linoc on Tue, 2015-11-24 20:15Hey All...
Just got a 4.4mtr glass runabout (4050mm from eye to stern) with a 55 yammy, and don't waste my time unlicenced trailer.
Never had to buy one without a boat before, been hunting for a 2nd handy but they get grabbed before I pick up the phone.
Thinking I'm gunna have to go new but prices for what they are is crazy, half the price of the boat, never get close to it back "if" sell/upgrade etc.
Been googlin, read an old thread from a couple years back re local suppliers, times change...
Whilst some of you may think the cost of a trailer is chump change compared to your tub, I'm just a low wage earner on a budget, wanna have some fun with the kids, want the best value possible.
Any suggestions/recommendations accepted
Cheers!

Johnson 40hp
Submitted by hrcruisin on Mon, 2015-11-23 16:21My motor is stuck in forward gear, can,t get nuetral or reverse. I can select them but just stays in forward.
Took the leg off, drained the oil(pretty black but no metal filings . the selector rod was pretty stiff so flushed the box and put new oil in.I kept working the rod thru the gears till it freed up a bit.Could get all gears and the prop turned the right way for forward and reverse and was free in nuetral . put it back together and yep its stuck in forward again. Rang a mech and was told that the gears will be stuffed ,not worth fixing .Just thought i'd check here first in case anyone had any info or ideas.

tinny sounder/ battery setup
Submitted by red dawn on Tue, 2015-11-17 20:06Hi Guys.
I'm setting up my tinny with a 5 inch sounder/gps combo.
As the outboard doesn't run an alternator and I have no other electrics on board,
I'm wondering how I connect the combo to a rechargeable battery.
Does the battery need to be earthed, if so what do I earth it to?
Should I run a switch/(panel?) or will just a fuse do?
Any tips would be highly appreciated.

Yamaha F130a or Suzuki DF140a
Submitted by Dyls 570 on Tue, 2015-11-17 12:33I've decided the merc 115 2 banger on back of my Trailcraft 570 sportscab has to go and be replaced with a four stroke. I've narrowed it down to the new Yammy 130 and the suzi 140. Have heard a lot of good feedback on the suzi and was sold on these up until recently, I always figured the yammy would be overpriced. Can anyone give me some feedback on the F130a? Prices are pretty comparable at the moment and with the free rigging promo's on the yam I'm now tending towards one of these. Any info is much appreciated.
Cheers

Removing a Sikaflexed in Transducer - Miracle Spray!
Submitted by JohnF on Tue, 2015-11-17 10:16Righto, finally got the energy to pull out the 50kHz SS264 transducer I put in 3 years ago to test the 200 kHz transducer I had sitting on the bench for the past 3 years (long story but the 600 W 200 kHz transducer already on the boat worked well so I never bothered).
Plan was to pull out the 50, replace with the 200, if the SS264 200 kHz was better than the old 600W 200 KHz, I would pull that out and put the 50 back in so I have 1 kW 50 and 200. Phew.....
Anyhooo.....I remember I used a HEAP of Sikaflex when I put the tranny in 3 years ago, and man, it is like concrete! No chance of getting it out without a jackhammer.
On the net, guys have used a product called Debond Marine Formula, that apparently softens and breaks down Sikaflex. Worth a crack. Found it at All Marine Services in Hammmy Hill thanks to the guys at Debond O/S.
After trying to remove the easiest bit, rubber gasket, with no luck, I sprayed on this stuff, left it for 5 minutes, and with only a bit of effort it comes off. This stuff WORKS!
Anyhow, 2 hours of scoring and spraying and out comes the tranny with no damage. Happy days.
Highly recommended product, this job would have been near impossible without damging the boat or tranny otherwise.
Putting the 200 kHz in tonite. Less Sikaflex this time!

Additional Fuel Tank
Submitted by Messiah on Mon, 2015-11-16 14:23Hi all
Have a 5.9 Sea Quest with ~90L/100L u/floor fuel (unsure) - and a kill tank, which I want to keep.. I do carry extra fuel on some trips, limited to 60L (3 x 20L) by using Jerrys, but they can get in the way.
Generally, the 90L is fine for 80% of my trips, but I really want to spend more money on fuel so I can cover more ground and still not catch fish. I also want to not catch deep drop species on the two days a year conditions will allow me to get out.
I have two options essentially
(temporarily) Increase fuel capacity by using the kill tank location
Go slow(er) – currently doing this, range is much better! Still want some safety (spare capacity) if I head out wide though.
I have a ‘lift out’ insulated box for my kill tank – it’s great for keeping ice cold. A couple of bags hardly melt in a whole day – good for when you don’t want the big esky on the deck. Also good for bleeding Macks and other excitable toothy fish.
I think I can get an additional 100L – 140L using the kill tank location (depending on cap height/filler configuration). Was thinking of getting a tank fabricated with tabs/eyelets from Ally that I can lift in/out when I need it (when empty). Wouldn’t have it plumbed in, but transfer fuel to the main tank through the main filler with a 12V transfer pump. Soft fuel cell is out (initially) as I don’t think the fuel will transfer that well from a bag..
Pros/cons and who has done this before?
Cheers.

Tap Tap Prop shaft
Submitted by lawndered on Fri, 2015-11-13 19:28Hi all
I have a 115 Etec, recently had a gearbox rebuild, probably only done 10 hours since. Prop shaft was bent.
So been out a few times no hassle, only tonight after just a small outing, come home to flush the motor with muffs and turn her on to her a tap tap tap, down around the bottom of the gearbox..turn it of and when I rotate prop, you can hear the gears meshing, alsoo there is play in the prop, I can wiggle it side to side.
Been one big fuck up after another as motor is not that old, guys that serviced it for first few services told me some water in oil but didnt pick up on bent shaft.
Took it to Chivers last time who did the rebuild..
Thoughts ??
