Fuel Storage
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sat, 2016-05-14 06:36Looks like I'm gonna be layed up for a few months with my knee surgery so will have 90L sitting there in my full tank. Would syphoning out 30L into the Wife's car and filling her back up with petrol every 2-3 months be the way to keep the fuel ok?

Voyager LTD crack...
Submitted by Cowboy on Tue, 2016-05-10 20:50G'day, I'm wondering if there are any experts out there on Voyager hulls, specifically an LTD Mk3. I have recently noticed a very fine crack where the transom joins the hull, around 50cm long, from the portside corner running down towards the bung. Additionally, on the starboard side, there is a crack passing through one of the chines, again, where the hull pretty much joins the transom. In one very small spot, about an inch long, there is a very small rusty water stain, but a dribble really. She's not shipping any water, though any crack is a worry! There has been a very rough patch-job done at some stage to cover it up, just cloth glassed over the area, looks in the pic like gel-coat bubbling, but it's not.
The transom feels rock solid, there is no flex at all when I reef on the engine, and the cracked area doesn't seem to move at all. I'm guessing the next thing to do would be to drill a spyhole through the floor and try and see what's going on?
I'm about the 4th owner, she's an old boat, and I have no idea whether the stringers have ever been done. I don't know enough about the hulls to know whether the transom would be the original one, but as I said, it seems very robust and solid.
I can't tell whether the transom runs full length of the stern, or whether the hull mould curls around from the sides and the transom is joined at some point. Anyone have any idea? I've done every search I can for info, plans, specs etc, but might be looking in the wrong places, as I can't find much info at all about the Voyager boats history and manufacture. I would be most grateful to hear from anyone with experience of these hulls before I take it for major surgery, even if just to know what I may be up for before I go, to avoid being taken advantage of when a repairer spots me as the clueless new (OLD) boat owner that I am! :)
The crack issue aside, I would be interested to know any of the history about these boats, I knew enough to grab her when I saw her on reputation, and to date, she's been a fantastic craft for me and my growing family, handles most sea conditions beautifully, like a much larger vessel. Any and all info and tips would be very gratefully received! I plan to refurb the vessel over time, new windscreen soon, and other cosmetic stuff, followed by a bit of bling with Port Phillip Bay style snapper racks etc.
Cheers,
Tim

Earth leakage on boats
Submitted by grahaml on Mon, 2016-05-09 15:46gents
I've been told that the earth/negative on a boat should never be grounded and yet on my quintrex the negative battery lead is bolted to a lug on the transom near the battery box.is this correct or should I remove it from the connection to the hull so it's not grounded
the negatives for lights ect all come back to the lug on the transom

VHF distance?
Submitted by kirky79 on Mon, 2016-05-09 08:45Hey guys,
Put a new antenna on for my vhf as the old one wasn't working properly. Checked the new one out from home and got Mandurah sea rescue 5/5. Great I thought fixed that problem. Anyway last Tuesday headed out 20 nm west of Mandurah and tried again.... Zip. Tried again on the way home at 10 nm and picked up Rockingham sea rescue 5/5. Thought I would get a lot better distance than this. Do I need a new radio or is there something else to try?

Galvanic corrosion in ally boats
Submitted by careybrad on Sun, 2016-05-08 22:42gday guys ive got a bit of a problem ive had my ally boat for 3.5 years now and the paint is bubbling near any hardware that has been mounted on the boat
the worst area was near the live bait tank and under the cushions where the steel staples used to hold the side cushions together have rusted the area behind them
the boat gets washed after each use with soapy water and hosed off after that i thought that this was all that was required
since speaking to the boat manufacturer they have advised that i should be using inox around all areas where things are mounted to keep the salt water out......
since looking into this problem ive come to know how much of a problem stainless and aluminuim have with each other and then when saltwater gets involved things escalate but they make products that slow the process duralac and you can sikalfex around the mounted hardware to help stop the saltwater getting in as well
neither of these things were done by the boat manufacturer and when i asked them about it they just said it was poor maintenance
does anyone else think this is just a crap effort by the boat manufacturer i dont wanna name and shame the manufacturer but i think that its a bit shit and was wondering what other people think and if other boat manufacturers take more of an effort when mounting hardware to their boats

Radio help please
Submitted by Percula on Sat, 2016-05-07 16:42Looking for some help guys
I have an existing 27mhz, and a am fm radio in my boat.
I currently have 2 aerials.
I want to change the 27 for a vhf.
I was told all I would need is a spliiter and use the same aerial as the amfm radio.
Is this correct?
Because the splitter doesnt seem right when installed, as the aerial fixes to the second part of the splitter, not the main part (if that makes sense?).
Do I need a new dedicated aerial?

Mandurah mobile mechanic
Submitted by Lamby on Wed, 2016-05-04 07:35Have a mate in the SW that's from Canada, loves his fishing & looking to get back into boating. Only catch is he is looking at a 'wife' appropriate boat to keep her sweet & pursue the dream!
He is looking at a Tahoe, not only am I not a fan of bowriders but I have been in one of these tubs before & hated it not to mention it's mechanical issues. He is in great need of a mobile mechanic if anyone knows of one or site sponsor I have missed for Mandurah area I believe this Saturday. Mercruiser I/B I believe, I have already stuck the wind up him about them & would hate to see him purchase a lemon.
Also if any mechanically minded members are free, you would be repatriated of course for your assistance that would be great.
TIA

Not the day I was hoping for
Submitted by mickconn on Sun, 2016-05-01 18:59Left Ocean Reef this morning heading north of Rotto, not much happening so was moving further north when my 200 optimax started making some strange noises. Decided discretion was the better part and turned for home from about 20 miles out. Unfortunately I only made it in another 5 or so. Noise continued but I had a sudden loss of power and the engine died with a bit of a cloud of smoke. All that ended in a nice tow from Whitfords Sea Rescue Group, thanks heaps for that.
Looks like a bearing/s on the compressor failed making all the noise, then it seized causing the belt to spin around the seized pulley which heated that up to the point there is melted bits of belt everywhere and it broke.
Not lookling forward to this little repair bill. This was definately not my first choice for a motor but this has been pretty much bullet proof for near on 800 hours. This is the first real issue and unfortunately resulted in a tow.
Does anyone have any idea what a compressor costs to replace on a 200 opti, hopefully I havent done any more damage than that.
Mick

Johnson/Suzuki 90hp 4 stroke issue
Submitted by nicksta711 on Sun, 2016-04-24 09:03Hi Guys,
i have a Johnson 4 stroke (suzuki dt90) which failed me yesterday.
we were 20nm off hillarys yesterday, went to start the engine, everything lights up but no ignition, not even a click.
all batteries have full charge, all fuses (external to outboard) ok. im 90% certain its an issue with the key barrel/kill switch. we ripped the whole thing apart trying everything to diagnose but no luck. (not that easy with sea sickness kicking in)
anyway called whitfords sea rescue and got picked up for the long tow home. legends
has anyone else had similar problems? im going to try more diagnostics today and if i cant get it sorted call a marine mechanic/electrician.
does anyone have any marine mechanics/sparkys that they recommend. i want to get the outboard service at the same time
regards
Nick

Baron sportsman owners
Submitted by Sea cheese on Mon, 2016-04-18 10:23Hey guys,
I recently joined fish wrecked, I'm a fisho from south west WA with an 88 model baron sportsman with a yammy four banger. I'm thinking about doing some custom work to the back of the boat, already taken the back seats out so just looking for ideas for a neat finish with storage etc underneath the bait board. I have read some forums where blokes have refurbished their barons so would like to see some pics of the inside fit out if anyone is keen to share.
cheers,

Keel rollers
Submitted by dakka on Sun, 2016-04-17 16:51I have just had some work fixed on my hull and keel, when I was winching my boat back up this morning on trailer
l noticed that the keel rollers were not rolling when winching up. Are they supposed to take most of the weight or is that the job of wobble rollers. I have replaced all 4 spindles on the keel rollers because they were not rolling before ,I think this is why I had some damage, they are turning fine with boat off but when winching back on thy do not roll any thoughts please is it only adjustment of rollers if so which ones , wobble or keel thanks
