Johnson Endeavour 35 2000 Overheating
Submitted by Zano_1980 on Sun, 2016-09-18 08:49Hi guys,
was hoping somebody could give me an idea on an issue I have had with my Endeavour 35 2000. It is the 3 cylinder and is one of the orginal VRO models. The VRO has been disconected so it is being used as a standard 2 stroke.
Yesterday it overheated. Badly. After about 10-12 minutes of running it at low speed, the water temp alarm and lights came on. It took as about 15min of run time at real slow speed to get back to the ramp. When I got home I pulled out the thermostat and it was destroyed. The vernatherm was in pieces and the plastic and rubber casing was destroyd. The outer casing was cracked and the softer rubber parts were melted. One of the springs has been 'fused' to the rubber diaphram and cup.
My question. What could have casused this? Is it as simple as a faulty vernatherm or entire thermostat unit, or is it likely to be more sinister like a water pump?
Thanks so much for your help.

Anchor winch problems
Submitted by crano on Mon, 2016-09-12 17:05My young bloke has put a Muir freefall winch on his boat with a Delta anchor and has a couple of problems with the setup that I am sure can be sorted with assistance from members.
The first thing is the anchor does not fall off properly. It goes about 150mm to about the D in the name and stops. We could probably tie a sinker on it to make it tip in but there may be a better solution. The chain is loose and not holding it back.
The other thing is when retrieving the anchor alot of the time the anchor is facing the wrong way and you have to manually turn it around otherwise it would come in up side down.
Any help appreciated.

Radio help please
Submitted by aussiejoe on Sun, 2016-09-11 11:41I have a new 27 Meg radio which appears to work intermittently. From Woodmans Point I can sometimes communicate with Rockingham Sea Rescue but not Cockburn Sea Rescue. I have also been able to get Cockburn from the south of the sound but not Rockingham. I have checked all the connections and don’t think a loose wire is the cause. Somebody has suggested that I get the antenna tuning checked. Could this be the problem? If so any recommendations on who I could ask to check this out. Any other advice greatly appreciated.

replacing your boat windscreen ?
Submitted by hezzy on Wed, 2016-09-07 08:23the windscreen in my plate ali is in need of replacement it is divided into two halves at the front section , each has scratches and crows feet in places on them on the two main front panels this can ake it difficult to see through at times on the water
it appears to be made from clear Perspex approx. size for each section is 750x 600 mm
the frame is metal , with a type of rubber/plastic cornice fitted on the front side to keep them in place the top of the frame has small screws into it at about 10cm apart
if I can get the old ones out , ill take them to the local plastic guys and get them recut using the old ones as templates
im thinking getting the old ones out is removing the top screws from the frame , life the top metal frame off and pulling each old Perspex section upwards to remove it ??
anyone have experience with these ?
sorry no pics either

Which drum winch for a 670c Barcrusher
Submitted by mrwinta on Sat, 2016-09-03 06:26Can anyone confirm that a 300mm drum winch will fit in a 670 Barcrusher? I'm away with work and I want to order one so that it is ready for when I get home but obviously don't want to end up with the wrong one...
Also anyone care to help me decide from the following or offer any other options?? Must be power up/down, capable of 100m+ of 8mm rope, high quality and reliable without being crazy expensive and preferably australian made...
I think I want to go with the Stressfree as its the most popular and the BC already has the standard Stressfree fitting...
Lonestar GX3 1500w, 5 year waranty $1750
Stressfree MIDI 1400w 3 year waranty $1640
Savwinch 1500w 7 year waranty $2190
Micks Winch ????w 3 year waranty $1750
Tuff Winch 1000w 5 year waranty $1380
(ebay prices as they are easy to use for comparison)
Cheers

Prop Options for DF90
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Wed, 2016-08-31 08:18My current prop came with a couple of chunks missing and I have it repaired but I am now looking at replacing it.
I have an 2011 DF90 on a 5m Seafarer (600kg) which has a rev range between 5300-6300. The ali prop is 3x14x17 and pushes me at 33 knots @ 6200rpm at WOT and cruises at around 22knots @ 4500rpm.
I'd like to improve my crusing speeds and I know that increasing the pitch will give me lower revs reducing my hole shot and going to a 4 blade will improve my hole shot, crusing speed and handling but will reduce my top end speed. Another option thrown my way has been to slightly decrease the prop diameter and increase the pitch which would circumvent some of the RPM loss but I would lose some trim which doesn't bother me as much as she's pretty rear heavy and I like to get her nose down most the time.
I plan on doing a bit of trolling around reef for tailor and salmon and heading upriver in snag country with the kids etc so shying away from a SS prop in case I clip something.
I would like to see if anyone has gone down the same path and can give me some feedback.

How do you moor your vessel?
Submitted by Riv37 on Wed, 2016-08-24 19:45Howdy,
I'm new to the forum and am hoping you can help a fellow boatie out.
I’m in the process of developing an online solution, MoorMe, as I believe searching for marina berth prices, locating facilities and booking a berth should be plain sailing (excuse the pun!).
I’ve had some great feedback along the way and would like to learn about your personal experiences on the water, specifically about how you book your marina stays.
If you'd like to help out, please copy and paste the Google survey link below into your browser to answer some really quick questions about how your moor your vessel and plan your boating adventures:

If you have any further questions or feedback, just let me know.
Thanks all and much appreciated!

Allwest Marine - very happy
Submitted by merdel12 on Wed, 2016-08-24 17:40Thought id give a shout out to Brennan at Allwest Marine. Previously had my boat serviced in Henderson at a place that shall not be named and was over the customer service and being treated like a number. Thought id try someone new and all i can say is wow....if anyone is after a mobile mechanic that knows his stuff on all brands and actually cares about what he does then Brennans your man. Hes got all the equipment (including the $10,000 diagnostics for my verado) and is more than happy to show you and explain what hes doing while servicing the engine.
Within 2 minutes of being here he fixed a pretty big stuff up by the last mob. When i picked the boat up 12 months ago i couldnt understand why my prop was so loose, asked the mechanic what the go was and he came out and said its all good mate, its supposed to be that loose, we put a new sleeve in that helps reduce engine noise and clunking. Not being a mechanic myself i left a little confused but had no reason to doubt him. Turns out the 2cm of play in the prop was caused by a young lackey puting the rubber sleeve in the wrong way. Couldnt believe it, was pretty worn out/cracked aswell in just the 12 months and needed replacing.
Anyway I dont normally do write ups but was stoked with the service and the price. If your after a mobile mechanic who uses genuine parts then give Brennan a call!

Can you identify this boat
Submitted by rodfishsa on Mon, 2016-08-15 11:16G'day WA from SA
A mate owns this boat which is located in South Australia and he's trying to get information on the make/model etc. It's registered as a Stejcraft, but extensive research shows it's not. Extensive research has been done without any luck. A keen eye on another forum picked up the Commodore Marine, Stirling on a transome plate I photographed. I see this Company was in WA and maybe the boat came from there. Hoping for some local knowledge to solve the puzzle. There's a couple of unique features, the ridge running along the side of the hull which stops before the transome and the step on the side decks
Cheers

Centre console design
Submitted by upg on Fri, 2016-08-12 09:49Hi all
Looking to knock up a centre console in aluminium as I don't like the design of the factory console (smartwave sw4200). I think it is too wide which makes it a bit hard to squeeze past. Possibly reducing the width will decrease and hence protection not that it matters much as you're in a centre console anyway
What would be some other features?
Was thinking of a rectangular hatch for storage and a couple of grab rails.
Any thoughts appreciated thanks

Transom Sample
Submitted by z00m on Fri, 2016-08-12 09:40I've got a little project going for which I'll do a full build thread when I get deeper into it but I just wanted to share why some old boats are built to last. Below is a piece of the transom I had to cut out to fit the newer style leg and I just couldn't believe how good the condition is. This is below a couple of holes and below the water line. This late 70's hull seems to be holding up really well and the only deterioration is where stuff has been done after the factory - like drilling holes in the floor without sealing them!
Once the new floor is down I'll post some pics before it goes to the place to have the new motor fitted. The red colour is from the jigsaw blade but you can see how thick the fibreglass is and how good the wood has remained after all these years.

Leaking fuel tank
Submitted by Ericl on Thu, 2016-08-11 08:22Hi
I have a 2470WA and I have started to experience a fuel leak. The tank is Aluminium and is almost 500 litres.
I have checked the hoses and the fittings and they don't appear to be the problem, so I have started to remove the tank. I dont know if this is typical, but the tank is jammed in place by expanded foam and is a real bugger to remove. I have removed the foam in front of the tank, and most of the foam on the sides as far back as I can get.
The other problem is that the tank is larger than the hatch. It continues under the rear deck for about 700mm, and once I remove the front bulkhead and toilet hoses and fittings, I will gain about 600mm in front of the tank. Once I remove as much foam as I can, I intend to try and wedge the front of the tank up to break any foam that I cant reach at the rear of the tank and then pull the tank forward and then lift the front hoping that the rear will clear sufficiently for me to withdraw the tank
Once this is all done, I will need to get a new tank. I dont need 500 litres for my type of boating, so planning to get a 250 to 300 litre tank which will easily fit in the available space.
Question is, Aluminium or Poly ? and any suggestions as to where I can get one made (preferably North - Malaga etc)
Also, is it advisable to use foam again to secure. My preference is not to foam it in again
Thanks for any replies
Eric

8-strand plait rope
Submitted by ranmar850 on Mon, 2016-08-08 08:18Anyone have a supplier for this in Perth? Whitworths only do it to 8mm, I'll be after 12mm. For the upcoming anchor winch project. Tends to be very pricey, but prices do vary considerably.

VHF radio installation and use questions
Submitted by Paul N on Fri, 2016-08-05 08:52Im relocating the antenna for my vhf and 27meg radios to mount on top of the hafdtop . Due to rod holders and outriggers there is not a lot of space left up there . I was wondering how close to each other I can mount the two antennas . If they are only a foot apart will this cause interfeance ?
Also I have only used the VHF to log on and off on chanel 73 in metro waters ,is there a boat to boat chat chenel that can be used . The only other time i have used it has been at gamex in exmouth and they seem to use 17 as a chat chanel but i think its not the same here.
I have googled it but im still not sure about chanel usage .
Thanks for any help
Cheers
Paul
