Can you identify this boat
Submitted by rodfishsa on Mon, 2016-08-15 11:16G'day WA from SA
A mate owns this boat which is located in South Australia and he's trying to get information on the make/model etc. It's registered as a Stejcraft, but extensive research shows it's not. Extensive research has been done without any luck. A keen eye on another forum picked up the Commodore Marine, Stirling on a transome plate I photographed. I see this Company was in WA and maybe the boat came from there. Hoping for some local knowledge to solve the puzzle. There's a couple of unique features, the ridge running along the side of the hull which stops before the transome and the step on the side decks
Cheers

Centre console design
Submitted by upg on Fri, 2016-08-12 09:49Hi all
Looking to knock up a centre console in aluminium as I don't like the design of the factory console (smartwave sw4200). I think it is too wide which makes it a bit hard to squeeze past. Possibly reducing the width will decrease and hence protection not that it matters much as you're in a centre console anyway
What would be some other features?
Was thinking of a rectangular hatch for storage and a couple of grab rails.
Any thoughts appreciated thanks

Transom Sample
Submitted by z00m on Fri, 2016-08-12 09:40I've got a little project going for which I'll do a full build thread when I get deeper into it but I just wanted to share why some old boats are built to last. Below is a piece of the transom I had to cut out to fit the newer style leg and I just couldn't believe how good the condition is. This is below a couple of holes and below the water line. This late 70's hull seems to be holding up really well and the only deterioration is where stuff has been done after the factory - like drilling holes in the floor without sealing them!
Once the new floor is down I'll post some pics before it goes to the place to have the new motor fitted. The red colour is from the jigsaw blade but you can see how thick the fibreglass is and how good the wood has remained after all these years.

Leaking fuel tank
Submitted by Ericl on Thu, 2016-08-11 08:22Hi
I have a 2470WA and I have started to experience a fuel leak. The tank is Aluminium and is almost 500 litres.
I have checked the hoses and the fittings and they don't appear to be the problem, so I have started to remove the tank. I dont know if this is typical, but the tank is jammed in place by expanded foam and is a real bugger to remove. I have removed the foam in front of the tank, and most of the foam on the sides as far back as I can get.
The other problem is that the tank is larger than the hatch. It continues under the rear deck for about 700mm, and once I remove the front bulkhead and toilet hoses and fittings, I will gain about 600mm in front of the tank. Once I remove as much foam as I can, I intend to try and wedge the front of the tank up to break any foam that I cant reach at the rear of the tank and then pull the tank forward and then lift the front hoping that the rear will clear sufficiently for me to withdraw the tank
Once this is all done, I will need to get a new tank. I dont need 500 litres for my type of boating, so planning to get a 250 to 300 litre tank which will easily fit in the available space.
Question is, Aluminium or Poly ? and any suggestions as to where I can get one made (preferably North - Malaga etc)
Also, is it advisable to use foam again to secure. My preference is not to foam it in again
Thanks for any replies
Eric

8-strand plait rope
Submitted by ranmar850 on Mon, 2016-08-08 08:18Anyone have a supplier for this in Perth? Whitworths only do it to 8mm, I'll be after 12mm. For the upcoming anchor winch project. Tends to be very pricey, but prices do vary considerably.

VHF radio installation and use questions
Submitted by Paul N on Fri, 2016-08-05 08:52Im relocating the antenna for my vhf and 27meg radios to mount on top of the hafdtop . Due to rod holders and outriggers there is not a lot of space left up there . I was wondering how close to each other I can mount the two antennas . If they are only a foot apart will this cause interfeance ?
Also I have only used the VHF to log on and off on chanel 73 in metro waters ,is there a boat to boat chat chenel that can be used . The only other time i have used it has been at gamex in exmouth and they seem to use 17 as a chat chanel but i think its not the same here.
I have googled it but im still not sure about chanel usage .
Thanks for any help
Cheers

Trailer mods and upgrades
Submitted by dodgy on Tue, 2016-08-02 10:53Had some upgrades done to my trailer recently as it was well overdue for some love. Was not a drive on trailer but with the new additions it all works like a dream. Single handed launch and retrieve and beach launching is easy now.
Mate of mine did the upgrades. Is the 3rd he has done now. He is totally mobile and also has a workshop so if anyone is after any fab work I'm happy to pass the details on.

Formula 233
Submitted by North Coast Marine on Sun, 2016-07-31 08:08Hey guys, my old man and I are looking at selling our Seafarer Vagabond and buying a Formula 233 from Victoria and while I am convinced that they are the best thing since sliced bread after having sea trialed a few my Dad is less convinced, I was wondering if anyone on here has one that they would be willing for us to come and have a look at? or if you know someone who has? Ideally we would love a sea trial which I know is a bit of an ask but I should be able to throw in a pretty hefty discount on a service on your outboard if your keen :) Send me a message if you could help us out
Thanks Guys!!

New Nissan Navara D23
Submitted by Ninety Mile on Fri, 2016-07-29 15:17Does anyone here own or test driven the new navara, They are a nice looking rig, and 3500t towing capacity! But jesus on paper they are not so impressive. 2.3ltr T, 120kw, 405nm ??? that puts it at the bottom of its class, even the past generation of 4x4 utes.
Figures dont mean everything so would be great to hear from someone who has driven or towed with one

deck paint options
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Fri, 2016-07-29 10:05howdy
looking to repaint my deck but really only for cosmetic reasons - previous owner painted deck in a dark non skid (despite the deck having diamond non skid fibreglass)- it looks terrible and I have used citr-strip to get most of it off but cant get it all due to getting into the pores of the gel coat
So - looking to repaint in a non skid or similar (white) - have used phoenix paints non skid before and that was ok - like the fact that it is water based - just looking to see if there is anything else out there that anyone has used

North Coast Marine Maintenance
Submitted by North Coast Marine on Wed, 2016-07-27 15:53Hey Guys, I just thought I would drop you a line and thank you for the amazing support that i have received since becoming a sponsor. In a short time I have been able to meet many of you and service/repair your engines and swap fishing stories. I have had jobs everywhere from Quinns to Middle swan and everywhere in between. As my business expands to meet demand I have been investing in specialist tools to allow me to service a wide range of engines. Currently I have Yamaha, Suzuki, Evinrude and Mercury/Mercruiser Diagnostics available and have just purchased Honda Diagnostics. This means that I am able to diagnose running faults, check engine history and operation hours and many other functions depending on your engine. In the coming months I will be completing my new mobile workshop complete with on board 240v power, compressed air, bench grinder and fridge haha. This means that I wil be able to service areas up and down the coast depending on demand etc.
Currently I am equipped to service/repair outboards and sterndrives, repair fuel systems, upgrade electrical systems and fit GPS/Sonar systems. I also have a 200 square metre workshop for jobs where engines have to be removed and or trailer repairs/fabrication.
I have a couple of questions for you guys, please feel free to post a response or PM me if you prefer, once again thanks so much for the support and I look forward to meeting many more of you all in the coming months!!
Is there anything that you would like to see added to our services?
Would you be interested in a extended drawbar system for beach launching, including spare wheel mount, supplied and fitted for under $650?
Thanks a bunch!

Minn Kota or Motorguide bow mount 80lb
Submitted by bouttime on Sat, 2016-07-23 17:29Guys,
After some first hand info on both motors. Looking to put an 80lb bow mount that must have anchor lock. 5.5mtr fibreglass centre console. Done all the google searches and the motor guide seems to be they way to go although have not used either so not sure on what is the better make. I have Simrad gear so neither will link up so will need a new unit also to link up and mount off the bow. Both seem to be about the same price and have no preference to brands.
I have used the cheaper watersnake on a foot peddle and remote and it works fine but really only putting one on for the anchor lock and to be able to navigate from spot to spot on the electric.
Cheers

Renegade vs TopEnder
Submitted by johnathon on Wed, 2016-07-20 16:29G'day everyone.
My first post but an important one.
Im boat shopping and I've come to the realisation that I actaully need two boats for what I need like a Barcrusher 670 or a 520 Renegade so to be realistic I'm looking for somthing in between like a 570 Topender but I'm being told a Renegade is better value and just as good?
im living in Port Hedland and have a small family that also wants to enjoy the boat so the space and sleeping room of a Barcrusher is great for the kiddies but I like my big river fishing and enjoy the open boat.
what are people's opinions for a mid to larger boat for say 3/4 time fishing 1/4 time kids/family time?
thanks in advance.

Small Trailer ATM upgrade
Submitted by hilly9 on Tue, 2016-07-19 11:44
I have a dunbier single axle trailer rated to 1180kg which doesn't leave much weight for carrying camping gear extra for longer trips. I want to see whether I csn get it upgraded easily by a couple of hundred kilos..1450 would be good enough. It has a 45mil axle and ford hubs bearings and 13 inch wheels. From what I can think of the only thing that is stopping it from getting a higher ATM is the load weighting of the tyres which are 600ish each. Is it just a matter of getting some higher rating 13inch tyres or putting 14s on it and taking it throught the pits or am I missing something?
I'll find a local trailer place to take it to..Mandurah or Rockingham if anyone has any recommendations but thought I'd ask here first.
Cheers Pete

Leaking Oil from Johnson 2 Stroke
Submitted by Zano_1980 on Tue, 2016-07-19 10:47Hi Everybody,
I recently purcahsed a new 4.3m runabout and the motor is leaking oil out of the leg: where the prop meets it. It was like it when I bought it, so no issue there as I was aware and got a great deal.
It is a Johnson Endeavour 35hp 2 stroke 2001. One of the first auto mixing 2 strokes that came out. That has been disconnected a long time ago as it caused dramas so just running it as a standard 2 stroke oil mix.
I do know there is only really two issues that could leak oil. Either a bad fuel mix not burning off or a leaking gear box. Originally we thought it was bad fuel mix (crap oil used and the mix was looking terrible when I disposed of it). But what seems strange is that the oil leak seems to show up well after it was last used. It isn't that afternoon or the next day. In this case we took it out Sunday last week. The leak has only shown up yesterday. 8 days later!
Has anybody else seen this before or come across it? I am thinking it is prob just the gear box: pretty easy to rebuild and seal. But I am just stumped by it taking over a week to leak......
Thanks for any ideas.

Fibreglass fabrication - a few questions
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Tue, 2016-07-19 10:42after having a garage clear out I have a lot of free space and no project - so am going to make a new marlin board - yay
it will be approx. 195cm wide and 800mm deep (well that's not approx. but exact) and am thinking of a few large recesses across the board so I can inlay with my hoard of teak
I have done a bit of fibreglass repair before but not something this big - have started making a mould using melamine covered chipboard - looking for ideas to take the 90 degree edges/corners to 1/4 round
Was going to lay up a few coats of gelcoat/flowcoat first - then a few layers of cloth then drop in the marine ply for strength - glass the ply in with a few more layers of cloth
To those who have done a bit of glass work before
1)Would you use epoxy or glass resin?
2)gelcoat or flowcoat? (I am leaning towards coloured flowcoat - white yellows)
3)what matting/cloth thickness and type? - matting is strong but I am not good at getting it to go around bends! - have had some success by applying resin and as it is setting applying some wet matt - but its not easy - (much respect for those who have mastered!)
4)what release agent? - have seen an aersol spray but I think it is for epoxy only?
Was thinking of doing a thread on it from start to finish - wont post until its finished - just incase it comes out cr@p! haha
cheers

What to do - pulling an anchor
Submitted by crasny1 on Fri, 2016-07-15 18:17Hi all
Getting to old (and lazy) to climb up front and pulling the anchor.
What do you suggest to help my aging back?
Have a 5.4m Trailcraft and wondering about a drum winch or windlass (or other suggestions). Just hitting a button and up comes the anchor is so appealing.
Any suggestions welcome as I have always just pulled them??
Cheers

Anyone fitted a break away controller?
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Thu, 2016-07-14 16:16just wondering if there are any tips/traps in fitting a tekonsha break away unit? (going in a 200 series). To be honest I would rather get someone to do it but the 2 guys close to me that I have rung want a lot of money for a few hours work. (I have no objection paying someone I just don't like getting ripped)
