Keelguard - Keel Shield
Submitted by Perry Home on Sun, 2012-07-01 09:31Hi Guys
I'd like to hear from any of you who have either one of these products that do the same job. I do know that Jarvis Walker supposedly produce a version of the product and their gear tends to be at most outlets but I haven't found anyone yet who stocks the product( neither Whitworths or Bias Boating seems to have the product listed)
What do you think of it?
How easy was it to fit?
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY
Where can you get them in Western Australia?
Your assistance is muchly appreciated!

Ethanol in fuel
Submitted by joycey on Sat, 2012-06-30 22:56Hi Guys,
New boatie here.
I am aware of the advice of not using fuel for the boat that contains any ethanol, as it can be damaging to fibreglass boats and the outboard.
Just wondering if any unleaded fuel in WA contains any ethanol in it ( other than those fuels that clearly state it ).
What unleaded do you use?
Thanks for the advice,
Michael.

Running two transom mount transducers side by side question
Submitted by Happy Hooker on Thu, 2012-06-28 13:24Hi all
Bought a new sounder and tranny (Airmar 1KW) and will be installing it over winter when I get the chance . I have a lowrence combo on at the moment with the small 600kw trans on the transom and removing a Navman Sounder/tranny.
Will mainly be running the lowrance as a chart but also back up sounder if need be. Its an Ali boat.
Just wondering if I need to take anything into consideration when installing ? .
Am thinking more around interefernce between the two. Should I be installing one on port side and one on starboard or are they OK to run side by side?
All help / thoughts appreciated.

Flush muffs didn't work?
Submitted by mr_meks on Thu, 2012-06-28 09:13Got home from a fish the other day, put the muffs on and turned the motor on while I started cleaning up the rest of the boat. After a few minutes the over heat alarm goes off, I look for the telltale and there's none so I shut down hastily to ponder what went wrong. I've never had that happen before and I couldn't find anything wrong with the hose or muffs or anything blocking the water intake. After shitting myself for a bit, as a test I fitted one of those collapsable flushing bags and filled it up to above where I think the impellor level is, fired it up and the telltale started again and no more overheating??
I've run it like that for 15 minutes or so and it didn't overheat BUT in my mind I reckon the telltale water isn't as hot as it usually is. So I'm looking for any opinions on a cause.I ordered a couple of new thermostats as a precaution I'm really hoping its going to be OK as I will only have a day or so to sort it out before we drag it up to Coral Bay in a couple of weeks.

Teleflex BayStar Hydraulic Steering
Submitted by Andysuomi on Wed, 2012-06-27 22:29Hi there,
Does anyone have any experience with Teleflex baystar hydraulic steering? I was looking at buying a kit from ebay (aproxx $600 delivered) to replace my old push-pull steering. The current steering works it's just quite stiff and heavy and I would really like to upgrade to hydraulic. Is anyone aware of any problems with this brand of steering or any advantages or disadvanges?
Thanks!

Problems associated with older motors with low hours.
Submitted by Vinesh87 on Wed, 2012-06-27 17:29
After seeing a few comments on older motors with lower hours its got me wondering good or bad? What are some of the problems you can get ? E.g I have heard with low hours you can end up with salt scaling on the manifold that could over time cause a total block if not run / rinsed enough?
I just bought my 2008 boat (4.3MPI) with 60hrs on the clock that's only 15 hours a year, and it never occurred to me that it hasn't been used enough. I had a Full service done on the before i took it out. e.g new impeller, fuel filters, oil filters, alignment , fuel system, gear lube etc etc. I have done 20 hrs with it since then and its been outstanding.
Interested in your thoughts!!

Need to repower 21foot fraser
Submitted by Doooma on Wed, 2012-06-27 17:19Here we go again guys...
ETEC or 4 stroke??
I went through this forum to research answers before asking... Ive come to conclusion that, anything less than 150hp I should go etec... anything over go with 4 stroke....unfortunately 150hp is exact size motor Ill be chasing for the 21 foot fraser hull... 1986 model..
I dont need to go flat out... just cruising out around the islands and the shoals fishing with the odd trip down to Dirk Hartog.. (I live in Carnarvon)..
Mainly want a reliable, starts first go every time outboard, BUT... I dont want a thirsty outboard... Looking to save as much on fuel as I can..
Being an 86 model half cab fraser, it probably weighs abit...
Any educated ideas on what I should go?
I dont want the .. I heard a guy that had a .... type story... I cant afford to buy something thats not up to scratch..

Damage to Aliminium dinghy. Any idea of cost??????
Submitted by beachsoul on Mon, 2012-06-25 06:03Took the tinney up north went over miles of really rough tracks travelling way slower than most other boats but still came back with some cracks in the hull. Both are on the bottom of the hull where the rear of the back side skids meets the boat....the central rollers had dropped due to vibration / weight from load. I figure they will need a 100mm patch on each side. Anyone have a rough idea of what i can expect repairs to cost
Redoing floor surface in fibreglass boat
Submitted by whipasswaverunner on Sun, 2012-06-24 22:30I plan on redoing the finished surface on my boat floor. At the moment I have a light grey colour flow coat with roller texture to give a bit of grip.
What do others on this forum have on their boat or seen on others.
I don't want to go to carpet.
Have anyone here heard of tredgrip, it's painted on and has rubber particles in to provide grip.
Any help with info would be great.
Cheers

How many hours is ok?
Submitted by Jackalchub on Sun, 2012-06-24 20:15Hey guys,
looking at a new tub at the moment... having a close look at Trailcraft Tournaments/Profish between 475 and 510.
Just wondering how many hours of use on a 2stroke/4 stroke? is a safe amount to purchase? how many hours would be an outboards life span?
Any information regarding this/the Trailcraft hulls I would be very interested in, Iam looking at these so I can out my electric on the front and continue the breaming aswell as having a self draining deck.
Thanks in advance

Fibrelite Boats
Submitted by Mulie on Fri, 2012-06-22 08:31Has any had any experience with these fibrelight boats? They seem to be made the same way as the Ocean Whaler with foam between the hull and one piece liner with a self draining deck. I'm looking at ordering a 6.25 (650kg) with a 115 Yammy.

Toyo Kluger - the thoughts
Submitted by crasny1 on Wed, 2012-06-20 08:08Hi guys
Trying to het some informed opinion on this for z colleague of mine. Had a RAV4 and want to slightly venture more bush. Not serious stuff but at least 4x4 ability.
I have a Landcruiser and happy as larry, and I think I have heard some negatives from people on the Kluger.
I suggested he looks at a Prado instead, but stuck on this.
Any responsible comments, not the war Make vs Make, because he is stuck on Toyo.

Haines Hunter 565 L
Submitted by Perry Home on Mon, 2012-06-18 00:15Hi Guys
I'm tossing up to sell my current boat - Quintrex Oceansport 600 with a Honda 115 four stroke to purchase a Haines Hunter 565 L. I've always owned glass boats and after selling both last year made a quick decision ot buy the Quinnie - been out in it a few times and am not overly taken with the ali ride compared to the glass, even with the Millenium hull - though I'm loving the Honda 4 stroke!
So the question is does/has anyone owned or been a regular user/passenger of a HH565L. To some it maybe a step backward but to a degree I'm also interested in reducing the number of dollars I've got tied up in my choice of boats but then purchasing an older boat that does the job for the amount of fishing I'm getting to do.
Certainly appreciate your thoughts on this topic. Cheers

My New Dinghy :)
Submitted by Bruce on Sun, 2012-06-17 18:34Picked up this tinny today, its a Quintrex Bass 3.8m with a 15hp Mercury (2006). Motor starts first pull :)
Just confirming, the ratio for the petrol/ oil is 50:1 for a standard 2 stroke?
Anyway, it has extremely good deck space, and is a simple rig which is what i was looking for.
And would the engine run of muffs or is the engine too small?
Cheers in advance and can't wait to get stuck into some fish!

New boat rebuilding project
Submitted by Timmay on Sat, 2012-06-16 20:24Hey guys.
Just thought I'd show some pics of a project that I have...
Anyway, this boat has been my dads, and been in the family for at least 20 years.
its a 17 foot seeker. Currently no motor, and the floor needs redoing, then reglassing, carpeting,
and some paintwork... then the fun stuff - ie, radio & fish finder.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks!
particularly regarding the hull refoaming..
this shows a possibly issue with the shackle at the bow for the winch to hook onto...
some wiring to tidy up
all the stringers look to be in good nick...

Lowrance Elite 4x DSI or Garmin Echo 300c
Submitted by Redbucket on Wed, 2012-06-13 15:06Looking at fishfinders around $300 and under.
Somehow looking on the internet I have ended up with 2 options
Whitworths have a "Lowrance Elite 4x DSI " at $299
BCF have a "Garmin Echo 300c" at $229
Has anyone actually used either of these and can tell me there thoughts on the units.
the DSI is the Downscan Imaging rather than the traditional 2d view that the garmin uses.
Its for an old stacer 4m runabout, mostly for ocean use, wont be going anywhere deeper than 20 - 30mtrs.
If these arent the way to go please offer suggestions.

thankyou ocean whaler marine
Submitted by turtlesmuggler on Tue, 2012-06-12 04:10thanks again to nigel johnson & chris at ocean whaler marine in rockingham.
i purchased a new 565 ocean whaler from a boat yard in mandurah, the fitout was dodgey as. After months of arguments and much frustration i contacted nigel johnson the manufacturer and explained my situation. it turns out i wasnt the first, there were several other poor buggers that had been stung by the same weasel in mandurah and nigel had to fix them all to protect his buisiness. Must of cost him a fortune.
The good news is nigel & chris have opened a new boatyard at 87 dixon rd rockingham and are selling their own boats.bbthey now have full control of their product. nigel & chris spent two days fixing all the dodgey work without any argument although they are flatout with orders for their amazing boats.
i would also like to mention batavia outboards & marine in geraldton for fixing the leaking fuel tank. They were booked out but had it fixed within a few days of my phone call. Thankyou andrew. i have been out fishing and enjoying my new boat and am very happy with it.
Thanks again guys.
