Insurance
Submitted by iana on Sun, 2014-05-11 07:55Just looking and reading about some of the gear you guys have, and wondered while we insure our boats and vehicles, do you take out separate insurance for your gear?
These "Hi-end" reels and rods would be serial numbered, and at the values some of it is worth, would or should be at least listed (item description model and serial number) on your home contents insurance policy.
I think the insurer would also stipulate how the items should be kept to prevent theft, i.e. kept locked up when not in use.

the grand old flag let down
Submitted by petermac on Sat, 2014-05-10 20:34thought the boys might get up to night, but alas they didn't , Chris Dawes on about 800k a year needs to have a good look at himself , he needs to understand if the footy doesn't smack him on the chest he still needs to have a go (example matt pavolich gut running and second efforts )

towing tips for the car
Submitted by Paul H on Fri, 2014-05-09 20:15Posted this as a response in another thread thought it might be worthwhile to post in a dedicated thread
When towing with autos consider the following
Have a look at the transmission on your car and consider the gear ratios and what they are meant for. Most 4 speed autos (or any auto) are set up with the 4th gear (or top gear) as an overdrive (three speeds which are rare in medium/large cars are about the only exception)
Basically when towing don't use it, select 3rd gear (or next one down) this will mean less strain in on the trans and you will have better response, you will also run lower trans temps and have better trans oil pressure/flow, you will also use the same or even less fuel (using it more efficiently).
Warning do not use cruise control towing - (apart from potentially being dangerous) you risk kicking down gears too hard and blowing out trans seals (I have done this personally - trust me it kinda ruins the trip).
(even in my 4 spd commy I drive around town when not towing in 3rd. I use less petrol, have better response/acceleration and better for the car overall, I only kick it into 4th when 80-100km/hr or above on flat roads).
Cheers

the Jack Viney outcome the bump might not be dead
Submitted by petermac on Thu, 2014-05-08 20:22Thankfully the AFL has come to its senses and done the righty and over turned the Jack Viney suspension . I am betting Freo are steaming about it and regretting not challenging Nat Fyfe,s suspension not a freo fan but I rate Fyfe

Towing with a Jeep Cherokee 3.0 diesel
Submitted by Cruise Control on Thu, 2014-05-08 13:50Hey Guys
I know there have been several threads on Jeeps and their towing ability but none of the threads have touched on my query.
I am looking at the latest model Jeep diesel to replace my petrol cruiser. Its not a matter of economy, I don't do enough kms for the consumption of the Cruiser to make a real difference. Its more the torque on offer and the ease of towing with a diesel that I am interested in. However, when I look at the specs it says that the jeep is rated to 3,500kgs but for towing over 2,268 kgs, you need a weight distribution hitch. I have 180kgs on the ball, Jeep specs say up to 350kgs subject to operating conditions. What I dont understand is if I have only 180 kgs on the ball which is approx half of the max ball weight allowed why do I need a weight distribution hitch ? I though that this type of hitch was designed to reduce the weight on the rear of the vehicle ie the ball ?
I dont have any problems like this with the Cruiser and I have just come back from Parkside after having a look at their 600lb Hayman Reece weight distribution hitch. Thats a piece of gear I can tell you and its doesnt come cheap, nearly $1k on top of the price of the towbar itself. I dont really want to spend this money if I dont have to and to be frank it looks rather cumbersome on the back.
So to all those Jeep owners out there . . . . how heavy are the boats that you tow, what is the weight on the ball and do you have weight distribution hitches fitted. If you dont and you have a healthy weight on the ball does the Jeep travel level or does it sag in the bum and reduce your front tyre footprint thus creating potential braking and steering issues.
Appreciate any and all feedback as looking to decide whether it should be Jeep or another Cruiser.
Cheers in advance.

saw a bit of a worry at bent street ramp today
Submitted by petermac on Wed, 2014-05-07 20:07I was down at the bent street ramp this arvo at about 130 pm and this bloke in a 16ft cuddy with an old 70 yamy 2 smoker on the back pulls up initialy he mucked about a bit then pulled the out board cowl of and mucked about with it some more , eventualy he launches and my mate Alan pulls up for our regular arvo ramp beer , by this time it was pissing down and we can see the swells braking of shore along the reef near the sisters , the bloke with the boat eventually heads of in the rain from the ramp , alan and I watched him heading out and he gets about 300m from of the ramp and of comes the outboard cowl again 10 minutes later he is going again , last we saw of him was him heding towards the sisters watched him until we lost sight of him , I am guessing he is heading out for some snapper , just hope he gets back again

Lyndon river
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2014-05-07 16:16For those planning to travel up to Coral Bay please beware that the road from Minilya through to Coral Bay is closed due to the Lyndon river flowing over the crossing. Was running at 18inches this morning but has increased in depth over the day and with rain falling now and lots more predicted in coming days one would expect it to be closed for 4-5 days at least.
You can still get there via Burkett road but this adds an extra couple of hundred Ks to the trip and with the extra rain falling I wouldn't be surprised if that closes soon as well.

Fiji Fishing Charter in June
Submitted by Iceman on Mon, 2014-05-05 14:24Heading to Fiji middle of June and staying at Mana Island for my daughters wedding. Only one opreator from the island and organising half day (4hour) sports fishing (trolling) charter.
Anyone have any idea what we may catch this time of year and will 4 hours be long enough for 6 people?
Trying to keep cost down and not be too tired for wedding the next day. Full day is 8 hours

Travelling north, please think again in the short term.
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sat, 2014-05-03 17:39If you are thinking of travelling north to Carnarvon, Coral Bay, Exmouth or Onslow please keep in touch with Main Roads because we are expecting flooding in the areas north of Kalbarri to Exmouth with the tropical low that is approaching the coast as we speak.
Expected rainfall over the area is between 50-100mm with some areas receiving 150=200mm, this will result in stream and rivers rising rapidly
Heard a whisper this morning that Exmouth is refusing any more visitors in the short term due to the possibility of being cut off again

Coral bay Fuel
Submitted by Cruise Control on Fri, 2014-05-02 08:27Have just had some news on the fuel bowsers at Coral Bay. Apparently some credit cards are restricted to $60 unleaded and $100 diesel ? If this is the case, maybe need to have multiple transactions at the pump when fuelling up. Sounds a little weird, has anybody else heard anything ? Could end up being a bit slow.
cheers

Submitted by gav1970 on Fri, 2014-05-02 01:30Hi all,
I'm trying to find somewhere in Australia that sell the Shimano Bhaltair reel cases but can only seem to find them at overseas retailers. Does anyone know of any stores in Oz that sell them?

Close but somethings a miss with both teams, but I think more so with Freo.
