Sept 11 2001, where were you?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Tue, 2011-09-06 16:55As most would have seen with the hours of news coverage its 10 years since Sept 11 and the twin towers. Where were you when you heard?
I remember having a few mates around as it was a Tuesday night and I got a call from my ex to say check the news, we all went inside and watched the craziness in disbelief. Certainly a day that changed the world.

Fisheries Officer jobs, or other fishing related jobs
Submitted by spanishmackeral on Mon, 2011-09-05 19:49Hey guys,
Im only 16 and still havent decided what i want to do when im older, so when people tell me "do something you love, not something just for the money", the first thing that comes to mind is fishing.
Just wondering if theres any Fisheries Officers out there who would be able to tell me a bit about how to get into that profession, eg what high school grades you need, TAFE courses that need to be completed etc.
Are there any other fishing related jobs that people could reccomend?
Any advice would be awesome.
cheers robby

yabbies in cooper creek
Submitted by Timmo on Mon, 2011-09-05 13:27Photos of Yabbies covering the ground alongside Cooper Creek Nth of Ballera.
Apparently they are either feeding at night, or the water they are living in is shrinking, so nowhere to live, anyhow they are collecting them with broad mouth shovels, no net needed, most are bigger than a "Red Bull" can in length

National Historical Machinery Association Rally at Fairbridge
Submitted by Alan James on Fri, 2011-09-02 18:55No it's not fishing related but if you haven't got anything planned this weekend this is worth a look. Only an hour south of Perth so not too far. I spent the day there today with the wife's rellys who have driven over from Victoria for the three day rally. Even though I consider myself mechanically challenged I thoroughly enjoyed it. There is heaps of historical stuff to look at (not just engines and tractors) and well catered for. Recommend it. Here is some more info but there is so much more there on show.

Carnarvon's new boat ramp stuff up
Submitted by carnarvonite on Thu, 2011-09-01 14:30Went to what was supposed to be a closed meeting last week to discuss Carnarvon's new boat ramp and what changes need to be made due to major stuff ups in the designing of it. Word had got out about the meeting and a fair crowd of locals turned up to say their piece on the project.
The height of the new jetties are 300mm lower than the original one in the boat harbour [see pics] and at high tide will be under water!!! [note--NOT just at spring tides,] like the old one.
At full tide the buffers are only about a foot or two out of the water , just the right height to damage the under sides of rubbing strips etc .
The bitumen work is expected to start in approx a fortnight and toilets and a cleaning station to be added once this is finished.
Questions were asked why it wasn't stepped like Bundegi ramp or floating like Onlslow? and Kalbarri . The answer was that higher tides in floods/ cyclones would cause major damage, WOTF, Kalbarri gets a big flood and no damage to there jetty and Onlow gets cyclones on a regular basis so why not here.
Suggestions were presented to change to decking levels to create a step down effect to allow for differing tide levels but we were told that there is going to be a 12 month period of gathering info so funds can be made available to do the changes, in other words, shut up and this is all you are going to get!!

Australian Navy = litterbugs, just saying!
Submitted by till on Wed, 2011-08-31 19:05So we found some weird orange floats out fishing today, first we pulled over to take a look, then some plane buzzed us a few times.
It didn't have any obvious missiles or guns, but we took the hint and left them alone after that.
Later we phoned a friend, he said they're some sort of disposable acoustic toy for detecting submarines. We really wanted to see a colins class on the sounder, so we hung around for awhile, but we didn't get a visit.

Spray on Ute Liners
Submitted by Buz on Wed, 2011-08-31 00:35Gday all, just wondering if any FW members have Spray on ute liners in their trays/tubs?
What to protect the tub on my Hilux a bit better(and to make it look a bit better too
), plus create a surface that wont have things sliding about all the place so easily.
Any feedback on how it goes, durability, etc, would be most welcome. So far i have found Rhino and Speedliner here in Perth do it. Cant be bothered with the DIY kits rather pay to get it done good the first time. Thinking of going Speedliner for the better range in colours rather than Rhino which is just black.
Thanks, Buz.

Dolphins' fish catching tricks
Submitted by bod on Tue, 2011-08-30 15:09Dolphins in Perth have been observed holding a large conch shell in their beaks and using it to shake a fish into their mouths -- and the behaviour may be spreading.
Researchers from Murdoch University in Perth were not quite sure what they were seeing when they first photographed the activity, in 2007, in which dolphins would shake conch shells at the surface of the ocean.
"It's a fleeting glimpse -- you look at it and think, that's kind of weird," said Simon Allen, a researcher at the university's Cetacean Research Unit.
"Maybe they're playing, maybe they're socializing, maybe males are presenting a gift to a female or something like that, maybe the animals are actually eating the animal inside."
But researchers were more intrigued when they studied the photos and found the back of a fish hanging out of the shell, realizing that the shaking drained the water out of the shells and caused the fish that was sheltering inside to fall into the dolphins' mouths.
A search through records for dolphins in the eastern part of Shark Bay, a population that has been studied for nearly 30 years, found roughly half a dozen sightings of similar behavior over some two decades.
Then researchers saw it at least seven times during the four-month research period starting this May, Allen said.
"There's a possibility here -- and it's speculation at this stage -- that this sort of change from seeing it six or seven times in 21 years to seeing it six or seven times in three months gives us that tantalizing possibility that it might be spreading before our very eyes," he added.
"It's too early to say definitively yet, but we'll be watching very closely over the next couple of field seasons."
The Shark Bay dolphin population is already unusual for having developed two foraging techniques, one of which involves the dolphin briefly beaching itself to grab fish after driving them up onto the shore.
The other is "spongeing" -- in which the dolphins break off a conical bit of sponge and fit it over their heads like a cap, shielding them as they forage for food on the sea floor.
But both of these spread "vertically," mainly through the female dolphin population, from mother to daughter. The intriguing thing about this new behavior with the conch shells is that it might be spreading "horizontally," Allen said.
"If it spreads horizontally, then we would expect to see it more often and we'd expect to see it between 'friends'," he added, noting that dolphins are known for having preferences in terms of companions and whom they spend time with.
"Most of the sightings from this year are in the same habitat where we first saw it in 2007, and a couple of the individuals this year are known to associate with the ones that we saw doing it a year or two ago."
The next step would be not only to observe the behavior again in another season but also to try and gather evidence Of deliberate actions on the part of the dolphins.
"If we could put some shells in a row or put them facing down or something like that and then come back the next day, if we don't actually see them do it but find evidence that they've turned the shell over or make it into an appealing refuge for a fish, then that implies significant forward planning on the dolphins' parts," Allen said.
"The nice idea is that there is this intriguing possibility that they might manipulate the object beforehand. Then that might change using the shell as just a convenient object into actual tool use," he added.

Lowrance GPS Antenna
Submitted by bsir on Tue, 2011-08-30 08:27Hi Guys,
I have a Lowrance GPS with an LGC-2000 antenna (this has the NMEA blue connectors).
It looks like it has packed it in last weekend. I have swapped cables, connectors etc but it still looks like it is either the antenna or the GPS unit (LCX) itself that is had it.
Other devices on the network still work OK, so I suspect it is the head unit.
Wondering if anyoen has a "spare" one of these lying around that I can use to test with, and potentially buy if that proves to be the problem.
I'm in perth.
Thanks

Financial Advice
Submitted by nightfish on Mon, 2011-08-29 12:23Just imagine...
If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Qantas one year ago, you would have $149.00 today!
If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you would have $33.00 today.
If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you would have $0.00 today.
But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the aluminum cans for recycling refund, you would have received $184.00.
Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle. It is called the 04ACan
A recent study found that the average Aussie walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found that Aussies drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year. That means that, on average, Aussies get about 41 miles to the gallon!
Makes you damned proud to be an Aussie!

snatch straps
Submitted by bod on Mon, 2011-08-29 09:58This accident/death happened last week in Geraldton and was a real tragedy in that it was such an unlikely freak chance. Thought the article was worth posting as a reminder of some of the dangers involved in towing.
Towing death highlights danger
The terrible tragedy that resulted in the death of a mother of three on a beach near Geraldton last week highlights once again the dangers of using a snatch-strap to recover bogged vehicles.
The woman, who was sitting in the passenger seat, died when the towball of the vehicle her partner was recovering sheared off and catapulted back through the windscreen, striking her fatally in the throat.
Snatch-straps are like big elastic bands; they use kinetic energy to enable the recovery of a bogged vehicle and it is that stored energy which makes them so dangerous.
When the strap stretches it puts a huge strain on the points where the strap is attached to both the bogged vehicle and the vehicle doing the recovery.
Therefore it is critical that both vehicles are fitted with proper recovery points, preferably attached directly to the chassis.
It is imperative that when a snatch-strap is used it is attached to a point on the vehicle that is capable of withstanding the huge forces applied by the stretching strap - a towball does not meet that criterion.
LAST RESORT
Snatch-straps are a great recovery tool but, in my opinion, should be a last resort when a vehicle becomes stuck. All too often a snatch-strap or winch is employed when a bit of digging and perhaps something stuffed under the wheels, or even a bit of rocking back and forth, is enough to get the bogged vehicle mobile.
A long-handled shovel should be at the top of everyone's recovery- gear list. Here in WA a big percentage of off-road driving is in sandy conditions and, given enough time and hard work, a shovel (in most cases) will see you mobile again.
If people were aware of the huge forces acting on snatch-straps, winch ropes and tow points when recovering a bogged vehicle, they probably wouldn't go within cooee of any part of the process.
Ideally a rated tow hook is the best option when using a snatch- strap - it means the eye of the strap can be attached directly over the hook without the need for a "D" shackle, which has the potential to become a missile if something fails.
Under no circumstances should "D" shackles be used to join two snatch-straps together. A damper in the form of a wet hessian bag, towel, Driza-Bone coat or a purpose-made cable damper to reduce the recoil of the strap is a must.
PROCEDURE
After all other avenues have been exhausted to recover a vehicle a snatch-strap recovery should proceed as follows:
• All onlookers need to be well clear of the area, preferably behind a tree or something substantial that will stop a shackle or broken tow point.
• Allow 2-3m of slack in the strap and using first or second gear low-range, have the tow vehicle move off slowly, allowing the strap to become taut so as to use the elasticity in the strap to do the work. The driver of the bogged vehicle should accelerate gently as the strap goes tight to aid the recovery.
IF YOU FAIL FIRST TIME
If the first attempt fails, repeat the procedure using a little more speed each time. If the vehicle remains stuck, keep digging.
As the Geraldton incident showed, recovery procedures can and do go wrong. Let's try to make that tragic accident the last one.

Any painters here?
Submitted by wayneleech on Sat, 2011-08-27 20:22hi fellas,
Have a question for any painters here...
I'm going to be painting the doors, door frames, and skirting in my house with a gloss enamel. I've heard that just white gloss with yellow over time. Therefore I was going to get a white gloss enamel with a drop of black in it - eg, a white tone.
Will making it any off white eliminate the chance of it yellowing over time? Or do all gloss enamels yellow?
I know there is the water based aquaenamel though I've used this before and don't really like the finish you get.
cheers
Wayne
